    I really wish you actually demonstrated the self-cleaning mode instead of just hand-waving that function. Opals are notorious for getting clogged with mold, so how easily this unit cleans is of paramount importance to me.

    I bought a Fridgidaire off of Amazon and it was around 100 bucks. It is smaller but it pulls about 205 watts and about 5 amps. I put it in my camp trailer while I was working in my backyard. I drink a ton of H20 especially last summer in Utah. I found that it worked fairly well if I started with ice water. It sped up the ice-making by about an hour. It even prompted me to buy a 600-watt inverter just to run it.
    when no 120-volt power was available. I believe you were right in saying it was a luxury item. 500 bucks is a lot but I guess if your refrigerator did not have an ice maker it would be less expensive than buying a whole new refrigerator. Happy New Year to you and your Family Jason.

    • @Jasonoid
      @Jasonoid  2 года назад +2

      Nice idea making a portable ice maker! I guess these would work pretty well off an inverter since they don't pull too much power. Supplement it with solar and you're good to go. Happy new year Kevin!

      You were lucky to get it for that price. I have the frigidaire too but that thing leaks like a mofo no matter what I do so I avoid using it. The ice it makes is pretty awesome though.

    Would nugget use work better than cube in a cooler? I’d say 80% that ice is make would go in a cooler. I already have a 44 lb ice cube maker.

    Nice review, thank you. 1. Is the new ice storage bin chilled or does the ice melt in the unit right after it is made? 2. Does the self cleaning mode require anything added to clean? 3. After self cleaning operation is completed, do we need Q-tips and toothbrushes still to get the job done? 4. Does Newair customer service have a reputation of easy or difficult? Thx again.

    • @Jasonoid
      @Jasonoid  2 года назад +2

      Newair has a good support team. You can chat with them on their website and ask them any questions about the product.
      The storage bin is not chilled but the ice stays frozen for awhile because it's all sitting together.
      The instructions mentioning using a mild detergent for the cleaning mode. The manual is very clear and speaks to all the steps required.
      The cleaning mode doesn't require any special scrubbing steps, I just wipe it down dry after it completes.

    I have one. And it is not making ice. I plug it in and nothing. It will trickle and then just stops. Do you have a trouble shooting video

    • @Jasonoid
      @Jasonoid  Год назад

      It takes awhile to turn from a trickle of water to making ice. The water gets pushed through a pump and then gets frozen so the inside has to turn cold to start working.

    This ice maker is 50% off on amazon. I'm tempted to buy it but there's tons of reviews that say theirs stopped working after 6 - 9 months.
    How has yours held up and have you been using it ever since you made this review?

    • @Jasonoid
      @Jasonoid  Год назад +1

      It's been holding up well. I mostly use the ice for parties and entertaining guests so I can't say I've used it as much a others would have daily.

    • @clashwithkeen
      @clashwithkeen Год назад +1

      @@Jasonoid I ended up getting it. What I'm doing now is letting it run for about 8 hours and then bagging up the ice for the freezer and then unplugging it until those run out to keep it from running all the time. Luckily I have 2 fridges and a deep freezer or else this probably wouldn't be viable for most people.

    Er... I'm not a dentist, but I can tell you that chewing ice is a really bad idea (although I'm sure the hard stuff is much worse). Two or three years ago, our kitchen refrigerator pooped the bed, which is when I bought my first compressor-cooler (53/54 qt. FOHO) and a countertop icemaker. The latter cost no more than $150, and makes 9 "cones" every 7-8 minutes. We used it for a week or two until the fridge got fixed (I fixed the compressor, but the home warranty company had to replace the evaporator fan), but have not needed it since. The compressor-cooler is where we put new bags of flour for a week or so to kill any nasties, and also use it as overflow, such as for our Christmas turkey.

      Sup Joe, this ice is much softer than normal ice. I hate chewing ice since I have sensitive teeth and would hate to crack one. This stuff is pretty different, it has soft layers that break apart very easily.... It's hard to explain. It's always great to have some extra cold storage around the house too! Happy new year!
