Hey Roger, Thanks for the feedback. Glad to have been able to help. You may want to check out the “How to Remove the Back Seat of a Jeep” video, as it shows the tons of extra storage available below the camping platform in that scenario.
I think it's also good to have the best of both worlds. Rooftop tent is good also when you want that outside air. When it gets too windy, then sleep inside.
Absolutely. I can imagine some nice spots where that would be nice. The only thing for me about the rooftop tent is it seems like a lot of gear and weight to be carrying around and on top of the Jeep. My wife and I want to travel cross-country to camp and also visit some cities, so it will be nice to not have any gear outside the Jeep when we stay at a hotel.
Wow thank you!! I am attempting to build this in the coming week while living out of my Jeep haha having the measurements and being able to have them cut it for me at the hardware store is BEYOND helpful. One less thing I have to figure out!
Hey Adventure Time Loui, I'm so excited that you're utilizing the design. It's easy, flexible, practical, modular, and fairly cheap to implement. Feel free to check out any of my other camping DIY video ideas. I noticed your Jeep is a JK. It will fit in a JK. Hey MyBluJL, I'm glad to hear that. I'm going to finish this project with Part 3. It covers my choice of a varnish finish, rather than carpet, increasing storage by removing the rear seat, and discussion of using angle brackets if one choses, even though the platform's integrated notches work well. Cheers
Jeremy, Thanks for the feedback. I just wanted to make a simple, functional, versatile platform system, and it works for me!...lol. My Jeep is a JL. A buddy of mine has a 2010 JK, and it fits fine in his as well. In 2011, Jeep upgraded the interior, so I can't say with certainty if there would be a fitment issue if yours is a 2011-2018 JK. I did a video on a chuck box, and interior shelf brackets. The extra shelf at the back would be handy for storing things, even when you are in the jeep camping. When camping in my jeep, the louvered window vents I DIYed work amazingly well. as seen in the TIPS segment of the Part 2 video. Have fun. Dino
Hey Oscar, Check out the DIY Camping Equipment Test video. It shows the camping sleeping platform really working out well. The system really works well and it essentially only costs one sheet of plywood. Let me know how it works out for you. Cheers.
cut a square out of plywood then glue and screw four strips of wood along the inside of the square hole . you can now lay the square back into the hole making a cover that you can remove to get your stored items out sort of like a sewer man hole cover drill a small finger hole in the wood so you can remove the square .
Hey Henry, I totally get what you mean, and it’s a great idea. Mind you I’ve been using the platform for a couple of years now, and honestly I rarely get at anything under the platform from the top.
Hey Glass Monkey Window Cleaning, All you need to do is cut out the space for it. Also, as the link below shares, it will work in a JK. However, the front cross piece needs to me modified due to a hump that sticks back at the centre console. ruclips.net/video/L68Pl3f7ApM/видео.html Also, if you plan to camp in your Jeep, don't forget about ventilation. ruclips.net/video/zIIyQ4xNFKA/видео.html
I would think that 1/2" or 5/8 plywood would work fine for this project and would be lighter plus drilling large holes in the supports would also lightent it.
Yes, I did an update video showing me out holes in the platform. You’re probably correct in saying a thinner plywood would work. I just wanted to be certain their was no flex in the platform and figured any extra weight for each piece would be marginal.
Thanks for the video/project...question on 8:44, I'm assuming the bottom dimension is 30" (instead of 36"), since the overall length is 39" minus 6" and also the slope roughly 3"? Thanks again...love your videos.

I need to learn some cheaper ways to do things. For our 30th Wedding Anniversary we just splurged on a brand new, Sarge Green, 2021 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport, 4 door, 2.0 turbo, 8-Speed Automatic Transmission. FYI: My local Home Depot gives me a 10% discount to Veterans, yours may also give you a discount, bring a Veteran ID card or your DD-214.
Hey Thomas, that’s good information for all those veterans out there. Thanks for the info. I’m not a veteran but will be pushing for senior discounts soon. 😂
Hey Jared, Just make the legs and cross pieces below the platform a couple inches in height above the height of the second row seat? I hope that makes sense and helps?🤷🏻♂️
Hey Eric, I know with 1/2", whenever I would have detected flex, I would have been saying to myself "Damn! I should have just gone 3/4"...lol. Honestly, the weight savings would have been negligible to do it with 1/2", so I just went ahead with the 3/4" for it's strength. I hope that was helpful. I love the platform though. At the end of the day, sleeping in the Jeep nice and dry is awesome. Thank for watching the channel. Cheers.
Did your rear seat have headrests? Do they get in the way when folded? I have a 2017 and they fold backwards, and seem to get in the way. Thanks in advance
Hey Dave, My Jeep is a 2018 JL, the headrests fold forward towards the footwell, and didn't get in the way. The only feedback I've heard from people with your vintage JK is that the centre console bulges out affecting the front cross piece. People just cut the centre part out, or have it go across underneath the bulge area. I looked on a subscriber's website who made the platform for his JK, and it seems he removed the rear seat to have more storage. www.stdi.com/stdi/home.nsf/ws/jksp2!OpenDocument Nobody has mentioned an issue with the head rests in the JKs...'til now of course. Sorry I don't know much more that I can offer. Would cutting the openings in the front cross piece leave enough room for the headrests on the JK, as they flip up?
Thanks for your quick response!! And your solution will totally work, by cutting out for the center console. Much appreciated!! My son and I are preparing for a VT to CA trip next month and we’re glad we came across your channel!! Again, thank you so much! Cheers
Hey Dave, You are welcome, and WOW! That sounds like an amazing trip you have planned. What an awesome adventure the two of you will have. Your son is sure to have many memories from this trip for sure. Have a great time, and thanks for the feedback. Cheers.
Yes. In 2012, The centre console sticks out towards the back a little bit, so the front cross piece has to be cut around it. Everything else will work perfect. Four door model of course.
I covered it with a foam pad set that matches the wooden platform pieces. I wanted to make sure it was uber comfortable, and my wife found it super comfortable, and we have been camping again, and have a few more trips planned as a result. Check out the foam pads in this video...ruclips.net/video/3D8vVR1pQzs/видео.html
Started building your platform in my 2016 JK however the measurements you have there are different from what I need. Just wondering how you managed to get an accurate measurement for the front support. Did you measure or use a level? So far turning out very well.
Hey John, I test fitted my platform in my buddy's 2010 JK, and it fit perfectly. I believe in 2011 the interior was changed, and the impact for the platform is that the new centre console bumps outward towards the rear, affecting the front cross piece. The front cross piece, in the middle, behind the centre console may have to be cut lower or removed. I covered this in this video ruclips.net/video/L68Pl3f7ApM/видео.html at 2:36. Let me know if I can help more?
Hey John, Just read your question again...the height of the front cross piece was determined by using cardboard templates to determine the height to needed to result in a level platform.
Hey there ŚŃĨРĔŔŚЖ , The video in this link below will illustrate for you how it fits in a 2007 JK. I believe in 2011 the interior of the JK changed, and the centre console bends out toward the back a little, which will affect the front cross piece. You should be able to account just for that, and use the rest of the measurements to work for you. The beauty is you'll have the platform, the storage, and it only cost you essentially one sheet of plywood. ruclips.net/video/L68Pl3f7ApM/видео.html Cheers.

Tackling this project this weekend! For the window vent, what did you use to attach the aluminum pieces to the vent?
I just used small screws. They leave the points exposed so small bolts could work better. There are all kinds of adhesives that could work also.
