So I built this today for my 17 JKU. it went mostly fine, but some alterations had to be made. overall though, the concept is very solid, really appreciate the time you took to document it. I filmed my build, and there is no way that garbage sees the light of day lol. If no one else has said it today, you do a great job presenting

I’m pretty happy with how it’s worked out I’m currently using it on a fishing trip up in the Algoma region and it’s working great. I have the rear seat out and the 40% section of the platform out. Excellent design, I've been looking at various video's trying to find someone who didn't remove the back seat. I carry clients offroad when looking at property and didn't want to have to remove the platform every time. I also love removing the doors with the top on for airflow and that iconic jeep look, so being able to just remove that section over the back seats and store it in the back is perfect. Thanks for an outstanding video.
I fastened flat brackets to 12" high by full length 1/2" ply sides bolted to the rear seat anchors. The 4 compartment base is over top a single ply spine to keep weight down. Rethinking the hinge mechanism, the pass seat can now fold flat to make a 6-4 bed. With the base being 12" high, both seats can still fully recline. With a little ingenuity it's amazing how much utility you can squeeze out of a 2 dr JK.

CheaperJeeperTV amazing took it out west from DC twice. I ended up buying a rooftop tent however I like sleeping on the platform more than the tent. Created loads of extra space. Easy to build too. I would productize/patent it If I were you.

Very nice. Looking forward to seeing the camping video to see how you make out with the storage capacity. My concern is packing for a 3 week trip which is why i went much taller on my platform. That 'wasted space' from sleeping body to the roof. Good luck and hope you can get out to try it out soon!

Good stuff, i’m thinking about doing something similar I’m up in the air because I don’t know what the hell I’m doing I just bought a 53 quart Alpicool fridge / freezer, I was just about to buy a teardrop camper but I change my mind after doing some research I see that people are sleeping in the back of their jeeps, i wanna do this, maybe you could help me I don’t know where to put my 12 volt fridge, should i just build a raised small table for it, that way we can still fit our feet under the structure that would hold the fridge ? Also do I have to take my rear seats out to make that little mattress they sell for the JL work ?
Hi JeepdogsRCbikelife, It sounds like the camping setup you're shooting for is the same thing we are doing. I didn't want the hassles of towing a trailer either, so I started developing the platform idea instead. One way to store the fridge is to remove the rear seat and store the fridge in the area below the platform there. Your fridge is larger than what I plan to use, but you can create more room by making your cross pieces and leg supports taller than the ones in the plan I created. I hope that makes sense? As for a shelf, check out the video I made that shows how to create a metal bracket to support a shelf in the back. It doesn't impede the function of the platform at all, and can also be developed further to support other items as well, which I plan to do in subsequent videos. Hey Kristina, We love our platform. Honestly, with the foam pad, bedding and pillows, we don’t notice any banging around much at all. I haven’t anchored it, but it can be done. Hey Jesse, Thanks for the feedback. Those vertices pieces in the cargo area provide support for the cargo area platform. You could move them to be positioned just past the outer edges of the spare, or use the spare as the support, but the height of the spare may dictate a change to the design. Good luck.
I build a platform in the back of my 4door wrangler and because I go offroad I needed to make it really solid platform, im just wondering how your platform handles the rough roads without bolt them to the body ?? Aren't they moving or make a noise with not being tight to the body?
Hey Behshad, In the Sleeping Platform Video -Part 3 - Finishing Touches, I review steps to secure the platform to the tub. Mind you, I haven’t done it as I don’t do too serious off roading to cause it to bounce around very much at all. Maybe the foam pad and bedding muffle any noise. In my latest video on Sleeping Platform Mods I shared a tip on using Velcro between the panels and the frame to keep down any rattles. Cheers.

Hey Behsad, That’s awesome. I find sleeping in the Jeep to be dry and comfortable. Way better than a tent. I purchased 3" high density foam from a foam store, and had it cut into sections that match the platform, and had fabric sewn to cover them with velcro to keep them attached. This helped when packing them away. It is very comfortable.

Hey Robert, Thanks for the feedback. Yes I measured the interior myself. The trick was determining the depth of the cargo platform. Since I wanted to be able to have it in the Jeep with the rear seat up, in case I wanted to use it, the depth of the cargo platform got less the higher up it was situated because the rear seat back leans back. So I made cardboard templates of the cargo legs(boards) and directly took the cargo platform measurement from the level at the back seat to the tailgate. Would it be easy to adjust the blueprints for 2011-2017 JKU with floor mounted alpine subwoofer ? It would be awesome to take blueprints to home depot or lowes like you did. Your jeeps contours are pretty different than mine.
Hey Michael, I agree. I was planning to do one for the JKU, and my buddy has one, but now with the Covid-19 direction to stay home, I have not been able to get my hands on a JK to do it. I will post a video on it the first chance I get.
I never had a cargo tub lid. If you have one you may possibly not have enough room for your feet. You can lower the platform for more foot room. Also maybe the top pieces would have to be reconfigured to fit properly with the rear seat up.

@@erickdiaz6152 ahhhhh yes. Sorry. I removed that cover so that I can have access to that space. If I left it, then I wouldn’t be able to open it with the platform legs on top of it. The height of the two cargo legs accounts for it not being there. If you leave it in, the two cargo legs need to be shorter in heigh a distance equal to the thickness of the cover that I chose to remove. Sorry for misunderstanding your question. I hope my answer helped. I’ve been using the platform and love it.
Has anyone made this for a JKU? With the price of plywood I’d hate to have it cut to find it does not fit and I’d like to just use the measurements CheaperJeeper has already
Hey there. Just wanted to let you know that i just got back from my 21 day, cross country trek in the JKU. The sleeping platform i built worked out very well. We actually slept in it every night rather than pulling the tent out! it was that easy and comfortable. disclaimer: (every night we camped which was about 15 days.. the rest were motel or b&B. haha) My thoughts were.. we brought too much gear we didnt need. If you remember, i wanted to store all our gear under the platfor without removing rear seats. that ended up not happening anyhow. too much stuff. My limiting factor though for that was a cooler. So i am curious about how you store one in your setup. I would guess just on top of the platform, but what about when you sleep? We left our cooler out one night.. and learned our lesson. racoons can apparently work coolers. opened it and ate half our fresh food! So with so much packed under the platform it left very little room above for us. I will definitley be redesigning to make it lower like your version. that is going to be very important for comfort, ease of access etc. But all in all, it was a great experience that just needs tweaked. Hope to see yours in action! thanks for the ideas!

Hey Aimee, I am able to sit up, but I am short. By all means, the height can be lowered, for sure. It would afford you more head room. Since I didn't plan to use the pillow extensions, I can use that section of the wood now that I've gained 2 inches back (1 off the cargo leg and 1 off the front cross piece).

Hey Pablo, i am thrilled you like the design. Essentially all I would do if I were you is take the cut sheet to Home Depot, or Home Hardware and have them cut the plywood according to the cut sheet. That’s what they did for me. Then just cut in the notches as per measurements. I’m not sure about BC but in Ontario we can’t get into the stores yet. Plus then there would be shipping. I have a 2016 and really on board to build this...what did you have to modify besides the center area of the front cross piece?

Thanks for the feedback. Those vertices pieces in the cargo area provide support for the cargo area platform. You could move them to be positioned just past the outer edges of the spare, or use the spare as the support, but the height of the spare may dictate a change to the design. Good luck.
I build a platform in the back of my 4door wrangler and because I go offroad I needed to make it really solid platform, im just wondering how your platform handles the rough roads without bolt them to the body ?? Aren't they moving or make a noise with not being tight to the body?
Hey Behshad, In the Sleeping Platform Video -Part 3 - Finishing Touches, I review steps to secure the platform to the tub. Mind you, I haven’t done it as I don’t do too serious off roading to cause it to bounce around very much at all. Maybe the foam pad and bedding muffle any noise. In my latest video on Sleeping Platform Mods I shared a tip on using Velcro between the panels and the frame to keep down any rattles. Cheers.

I always h a very a problem sleeping inside the tent and rainy days are just a pain in the butt , j watched you video and decided to make my own in my wrangler, I have 37" mud tires and can't go with roof top ,too much weight, but now removed the backseat and lost more weight!

That’s awesome. I find sleeping in the Jeep to be dry and comfortable. Way better than a tent. Do you use a mattress, or foam pad to sleep on ?
I purchased 3" high density foam from a foam store, and had it cut into sections that match the platform, and had fabric sewn to cover them with velcro to keep them attached. This helped when packing them away. It is very comfortable.

Thanks for the feedback. Yes I measured the interior myself. The trick was determining the depth of the cargo platform. Since I wanted to be able to have it in the Jeep with the rear seat up, in case I wanted to use it, the depth of the cargo platform got less the higher up it was situated because the rear seat back leans back. So I made cardboard templates of the cargo legs(boards) and directly took the cargo platform measurement from the level at the back seat to the tailgate. Would it be easy to adjust the blueprints for 2011-2017 JKU with floor mounted alpine subwoofer ? It would be awesome to take blueprints to home depot or lowes like you did. Your jeeps contours are pretty different than mine.

Is there a reason you got rid of the cargo tub lid? What would I need to change about the design if I wanted to keep the tub lid?
I never had a cargo tub lid. If you have one you may possibly not have enough room for your feet. You can lower the platform for more foot room. Also maybe the top pieces would have to be reconfigured to fit properly with the rear seat up.

@@erickdiaz6152 ahhhhh yes. Sorry. I removed that cover so that I can have access to that space. If I left it, then I wouldn’t be able to open it with the platform legs on top of it. The height of the two cargo legs accounts for it not being there. If you leave it in, the two cargo legs need to be shorter in heigh a distance equal to the thickness of the cover that I chose to remove. Sorry for misunderstanding your question. I hope my answer helped. I’ve been using the platform and love it.

Hey there. Just wanted to let you know that i just got back from my 21 day, cross country trek in the JKU. The sleeping platform i built worked out very well. We actually slept in it every night rather than pulling the tent out! it was that easy and comfortable. disclaimer: (every night we camped which was about 15 days.. the rest were motel or b&B. haha) My thoughts were.. we brought too much gear we didnt need. If you remember, i wanted to store all our gear under the platfor without removing rear seats. that ended up not happening anyhow. too much stuff. My limiting factor though for that was a cooler. So i am curious about how you store one in your setup. I would guess just on top of the platform, but what about when you sleep? We left our cooler out one night.. and learned our lesson. racoons can apparently work coolers. opened it and ate half our fresh food! So with so much packed under the platform it left very little room above for us. I will definitley be redesigning to make it lower like your version. that is going to be very important for comfort, ease of access etc. But all in all, it was a great experience that just needs tweaked. Hope to see yours in action! thanks for the ideas!

I am able to sit up, but I am short. By all means, the height can be lowered, for sure. It would afford you more head room. Should you wish to make a chuck box to fit underneath the platform, like the CheaperJeeperTV Chuck Box video, ruclips.net/video/tyua7OVwTZw/видео.html, you would have to adjust the height of the chuck box also.

@@CheaperJeeperTV I am short too! 5'2. But I think maybe my mattress topper plan is too tall. I have a 3inch I was planning on doubling. But maybe I don't NEED 6 inches of padding! I would like to have some good storage underneath too.
@@aimx2e I used a 3" pad of a high density foam. It's in subsequent videos. It's very comfortable.
@@CheaperJeeperTV I think I am going to lower it one inch just so I don't need the extra scrap wood to make the second cargo leg. Since I didn't plan to use the pillow extensions, I can use that section of the wood now that I've gained 2 inches back (1 off the cargo leg and 1 off the front cross piece).

Hey Pablo, i am thrilled you like the design. Essentially all I would do if I were you is take the cut sheet to Home Depot, or Home Hardware and have them cut the plywood according to the cut sheet. That’s what they did for me. Then just cut in the notches as per measurements.
I’m not sure about BC but in Ontario we can’t get into the stores yet. Plus then there would be shipping. I’m sure you could get it done there easily. But thanks. Cheers.
