Somebody needs to be talking about Kenny Vaughan the way Kenny Vaughan talks about other musicians. Kenny is no doubt one if the best country guitarists alive
I flew out of nashville once, prob the most hung over I’ve ever been. Didn’t exactly notice much around me but walked to the back of the plane sat down beside the guy beside me didn’t really look at him. But as we were getting settled I noticed people kept looking back at me. I just kept thinkin damn I’m way worse off than I thought! Having been out drinking till 4 and currently sitting on an 8am flight. Eventually I did the look over to see who I’m sitting beside and it just so happened to be Marty Stuart!!! I sat still for about 15 min before I collected myself enough to say somthing. Finally struck up a chat with him about music and gear and a head appears through the seats behind us and it’s Kenny! Best flight of my life. We all chatted the whole flight and up the ramp when when we landed in Toronto. They left to head west and I went home to Halifax. He signed my lyric book and it’s still a prize possession of mine.
I saw Neil in 1971 at Massey Hall in downtown Toronto. Just Neil with an acoustic guitar and a piano. He moved effortlessly back and forth from one instrument to the other depending on what he felt like playing. It was like having him at home in your living room chatting and banging around on his guitar...Thanks Kenny...
Saw the same show, 17 years old, Jan 71' Chicago Auditorium--same experience. John Hammond was the opening act and Neil closed the night with a Dobro playing "See the Girl Dance"...
Love Kenny’s playing. Him, Marty and the rest of the Fabulous Superlatives are very possibly the best band I’ve ever seen in terms of sheer musicianship and versatility. I wish we had a new edition of the Marty Stuart Show on RFD Network.
Best quote I've ever read "There is nothing lost between what Neil Young feels, what he plays, and what the audience perceives." When I saw Miles Davis with Mike Stern, Mike played a chord that just wasn't right. Everybody knew it, he knew it, by the look on his face and him sheepishly looking over to Miles. Who waited an instant, smiled and blew one note that resolved that harshness. The look of amazement on Mike Stern's face was a moment I'm glad I caught.
This is the most powerfully encouraging quote I’ve heard here and hey man, that’s Miles being king of cool, wide open letting every note and the spaces between the notes all roll out with sheer intoxicating mystique…..
“One of my favourite solos is in Cinnamon Girl by Neil Young. It’s a one-note solo and it just fits the song. Anyone else would have gone woraaagh and it wouldn’t have made any sense. If I’ve changed over the years, it’s that I’ve got more in tune with the song." ... Eddie Van Halen
Actually, Cinnamon Girl doesn't have a one-note solo - I think Eddie was confusing that song with Down By the River, which does. Still, point well made and taken.
@@chiefline7084 You're right - I stand corrected. I just listened to the original studio version and indeed that is a one note solo. I'm used to the version from Live Rust, which I listened to a billion times as a kid - that solo is either a bit more varied or it's buried in the mix so it's hard to distinguish it from the rhythm part. Upon reflection, maybe EVH is low on the list of people one should question on guitar-related matters...
The crazy thing about Cinnamon Girl is that the version that charted and got all the airplay was the mono 45 version and it has the vocal parts swapped between Neil and Danny. You can also hear in that version that it's probably not completely a one note solo but the B string overtakes all and that's how it comes across.
Saw Kenny Vaughn and Marty Stuart when I was 17 and was immediately blown away by his guitar playing. One of the most underrated country musicians of all time
Love ya Otis , Neil Young is my fav. After the gold rush and tonight's the night are both Haunting and perfect album`s to me . The emotions on both of these are unreal . OTIS YOU ARE A GREAT INTERVIEWER AND LOVE THE FOLKS YOU HAVE AND THE SONG WRITERS YOU TALK ABOUT ARE MY FAVORITES.........YOU ARE A GOOD AND REAL , IN THS TIME OF HATE........HOLD FAST MY FRIEND AND CARRY ON....
Love Kenny Vaughn stories, and he has a great, infectious laugh. I saw him in a Marty Stuart video the other day, and got excited when I saw him, lol. Also, the CD I ordered from Amy arrived today. Very much enjoying it, so thank you to Amy.
There’s a lot of interviews out here on RUclips these days for certain, however I have to say that I always take a special enjoyment listening to Kenny’s story’s. Thanks for posting.
Neil is impeccable, not perfect, just impeccable. And that’s good enough. No singer left behind. Hilarious. Got to meet Neil once at concord amphitheater in California. He was very cool and warm
Thanks, at 2:00, for making me look up "Barstool Blues" from the 1975 Neil Young & Crazy Horse album "Zuma." As usual, Kenny, your taste is impeccable!
I could listen to Kenny Vaughn all day long. Love Uncut magazine too. I got it for several years. Lost most of the issues when Baton Rouge flooded in 2016 but still have a few. Thank you Mr Otis. You’re my kinda people. D
I started watching your channel a few weeks ago. Right now I'm periodically going back and catching up on the older ones. These are some killer videos.. no joke. Really fascinating history. Keep it up because it's thoroughly entertaining. I believe this channel will really take off even more so as time goes on another year, more or less. Hopefully it's fun for you to put together.
I met Kenny on a state park trail in Colorado. He and Marty were filming a commercial for an upcoming concert run. I heard music as I was walking down the trail and here come Kenny with a Martin D-41 singing a little song. We talked. He was gracious. Even in our conversation he referred to his Martin as the Neil Young Special.
The Miles Davis story was funny to me when Kenny said “ I wasn’t going to go up to him. When I was a kid Miles was my next door neighbor. When he was around I would sit on his stoop and we would BS about music 😅😅😅 never gave much thought to the fact the he was Miles Davis, to me he was just the guy next door.
Thanks, I really loves listen to these memoires, here in Sweden I have no one to talk with about Billy Joe, Merle, Blaze Foley, so I really love this, thank you Otis and thank you for bringin in Kenny Vaughan so often; he is a great storyteller. With love from Sweden. /T
Kenny Vaughan, a fantastic musician. Even more beautiful to listen to him while he talks about Neil Young's technique and the emotion aroused. Great!!!
Fantastic!! I read Shakey too. I'm obsessed with everything Neil Young does too. My favorite or by far most played Neil Young and Crazy Horse Record has to be Raged Glory. The sound and band performances on that record still blows my mind. But Tonight's The Night? Whoa!!!! Same king of vibe. That record was recorded at LA's Studio Instrument Rentals, my employer in a different city (Not LA) for the last 22 or more years. "Bruce Berry was a working man, he used to load that Econoline Van." That record is haunted by the Ghosts of Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry, buth heroin casualties. Bruce Berry's brother Jan was half of Jan and Dean, and his other brother Ken, started, and to this day, still runs Studio Instrument Rentals. Otis, thank you for posting, and Kenny thank you for talking. I could listen all day.
I was 16th row center main floor for Smell the Horse in 1991. Easily my favorite Crazy Horse Show of the 15 that I went to starting with the rust never sleeps tour.

Tonight’s the night is my all time Neil fav, too! In 1976 a friend graphically reproduced the cover on the full kitchen wall, floor to ceiling. When the farmer needed his rented house back a couple of years later, his wife SCREAMED about the vampire painting! I saw Neil 7 times - 3 with Crazy Horse, 3 with CSN&Y, once with Stills Young Band (also in 1976!) Peace
Let me just say that I have the utmost respect for Kenny Vaughan, and Marty and the Superlatives! I remember the one time I was fortunate to see Neil & Crazy Horse Band, It seemed as though Neil was trying to create a spiritual environment for the listeners such that we would have a life changing experience. I know I will never forget that show, and after that experience I became convinced that Neil's gift to the world was through the live performance. Just learned this amazing "Neil" trivia from YT comments about the band Love and their seminal psyche tune "Revelation", which is an entire B-Side opus featured on the album "Da Capo"(1967): "Da Capo" was released in January 1967 but was indeed recorded in 1966. A little known story is that while Neil Young was working on his very first record with "The Loner" and "The Old Laughing Lady," he and Jack Nitzsche helped produce this song but were left uncredited for legal reasons". (!!!)
Just awesome Otis. Thank you. I stole money (borrowed) to catch a 3 hour bus and go to an International Harvesters concert. There were actually people booing if you can believe that,,, A treasure that will not be duplicated is Neil Young. Full stop.
Not sure if it was 1981 or 82, but Neil Young and crazy horse was my very first rock concert. I was instantly addicted, affected and infected with it. I'd grown up listening to him and his band and CSNY. I still have vivid memories of it
Kenny makes me smile. I have never been to a bad Neil Young show; even "This Notes For You" tour. I got to see him in every genre. He makes me laugh, angry, and sad like only the great ones do. I do love to hear what musicians think are great albums. I bet Kenny is a Modern Lovers fan.
I'm lucky to have caught Neil at the historic Fresno Warnors Theater. He was slated to only play one or two nights, but Niel showed favor to the Warnors and opted for two more nights. I caught the last magical show. I heard it was the best one of the four as well. I think Neil played down in Bakersfield and abruptly had to end the tour after that.
I'd love to spend an evening wit Mr. Vaughan at a campfire drinking a couple of beers and chat about the music we both like. And I don't even like beer that much.
Dylan de-tunes from time to time to put across an emotional urgency into his songs...the more you listen to the songs, the more it sounds "perfect" Thank You Mr. Otis!!! You are amazing!!
My only time at SXSW was the year Neil’s Heart Of Gold film came out. My brother and I were at Stubbs to eat and catch a show, and about halfway thru Neil and Elliott Roberts walked in and sat down a couple tables over. People ask me all the time if the Q at Stubbs is any good and for the life of me, I have no idea. I didn’t eat another bite
Thanks Otis, you get the best stories out there, and thank you Kenny, almost got to shake your hand at the Jimmy Rodgers Trail dedication but I was shy, you were dressed so nice and I wasn't, Marty must have noticed my shyness and came up with a big grin, grabbed my hand and shook it good, It made my whole summer that year.
It's funny how you discover someone like Kenny and you can't get enough of his music and you find out later that he is a fan of the same people you're into. Billy Joe Shaver, Miles Davis and Neil Young.
To me, Neil's electric guitar playing is right up there with Jimi and Jeff. Listen to Mother Earth on Ragged Glory, which is one of the greatest unknown guitar albums. Like Jimi and Jeff, nobody else could do what he did on that song, and many others. And like Kenny said, he intentionally plays out of tune on that one and its beautiful.
One of the times I saw Neil with Crazy Horse, coincidentally with Lucinda (and Kenny) opening, it was just like Kenny described: 3 hippies with guitars banging it out in front of the bass drum, digging into the groove like deep Earth miners. The last chord of their last song lasted for something like 15 minutes. I'm talking about Neil bending a single note for a quarter of an hour... and that's not really much of an exaggeration. It was one of the most brilliant things I've ever witnessed.
Herbie Hancock in an autobiography said he botched an intro into Miles solo and apologized after the show. Miles said, "What you saw as a mistake I saw as an opportunity".
Kenny Vaughn is a true music Fan. As great of a musician as he is, and he's as good as it gets.....you just get the vibe that he's such a Nerd! A huge music Nerd. The best kind. A wealth of stories, informative, hilariously funny. Just the coolest dude.
Put my grandma in the channel she has so many stories about the band levon Ronnie hawkins woodstock ext. my grandpa was in the band and the hawks and I love hearing all there great stories about all these musicians!
I’ve been listening to Neil since the early 70’s. Got me through some hard lonely times. I will always be grateful for his existence and continue to appreciate his talent.
To hear someone who is such a fine guitar player in the technical sense talking about the VU is very heartwarming.....and Neil Young is god in this house.
In the David Foster dvd, there is a scene where he is producing Neil, and at one point he tells Neil that he's off pitch, to which Neil says," Hey man, that's my style".
Yeah Mojo is great I've been buying that magazine for years, not as much these days, as I've been pretty broke lately, ....lol,not for long though. Kenny is great, love his playing ,and he's a very entertaining guy.gday from Melbourne.
I saw Neil Young play in 2009, from where I was seated, I could see he had chord charts on the floor in front of him - in a huge font he could see when standing up. I was thinking huh, Neil can't remember the chords anymore. To be fair, it was after his stroke.
Tell Kenny if you see him that these discussions completely turned me on to Marty and the Superlatives and got me into country music in a big way... Music!
Here's Dan Baird telling a great Neil Young story.

I very much agree. Another extremely talented musician that most people have never heard of. At least he makes a living playing music.

I have a recording of that show. It's incredible!
And I'm writing this from about 6km north of Neil's old stomping grounds of Omemee which may be a town but it's nowhere near North Ontario.
Saw the same show, 17 years old, Jan 71' Chicago Auditorium--same experience. John Hammond was the opening act and Neil closed the night with a Dobro playing "See the Girl Dance"...
The Harvest tour probably you were very lucky
My one regret of leaving TO in the spring of 71 was missing that performance

Bring back the Marty Show!
Yup
Agree

Kenny Vaughn is a true music Fan. As great of a musician as he is, and he's as good as it gets.....you just get the vibe that he's such a Nerd! A huge music Nerd. The best kind. A wealth of stories, informative, hilariously funny. Just the coolest dude.
Damn I love Kenny Vaughan! Thank you Otis for these fantastic videos!
"The no singer, left behind box". That is damn funny. I'm gonna steal that one, Cousin Kenny.😂😂😁👍

Thank you! ✌️
Love these videos with Kenny!
Kenny is a great story teller.
I’ve been listening to Neil since the early 70’s. Got me through some hard lonely times. I will always be grateful for his existence and continue to appreciate his talent.
"No Singer Left Behind Box" 😅🤣😂
Kenny I love barstool blues too. Oddly my 2nd fave is powder finger
To hear someone who is such a fine guitar player in the technical sense talking about the VU is very heartwarming.....and Neil Young is god in this house.
Hell yes, VU VU is THE VU record. From "Jesus" to "Beginning th See the Light" there is a quantum leap into a new era of Western Civilization.
KENNY VAUGHAN IS THE SHIT !!!
In the David Foster dvd, there is a scene where he is producing Neil, and at one point he tells Neil that he's off pitch, to which Neil says," Hey man, that's my style".
I could listen to his stories all day long. : D
Kenny Vaughan! Brother from a different mother and father. He always has interesting things to say about the music.
Brilliant Insight
"the no singer left behind box" ..... it takes a few seconds for that one to sink in. 👍
Funny but Barstool Blues is *one* of my favorites too. That and all of Tonight's The Night.
Love these stories Otis
At first I thought Kenny was Gary Louris of The Jayhawks, also a Neil Young aficionado. There is more than a passing resemblance between them.
What a genius commentary
Tell Kenny if you see him that these discussions completely turned me on to Marty and the Superlatives and got me into country music in a big way... Music!
"... there wasn't any posturing". Love that
I could talk to this guy a long time. “Smoke em if you got ‘em” type of get together.
