I like the ssl interface so much that I bought their channel strip even though I had 2. They work very well with my controller, and they just feel so natural and familiar, not to mention stable. Channel and bus comp on every mix for me.
I think what makes the SSL G3 sound so sweet on the track is what it does to the kickdrum especially in the chorus. The kick sounds much heavier and punchier but in a very smooth way. One can feel the weight without it sounding to aggressive and jumping out of the mix. I really like that.
I have been doing this for a very long time by using abletons glue compressor. Duplicate so you have x3 and then use the sidchain function to set one as a low pass, one as mid and the last one as a high pass. Put a utility at the end so you have a main output. Group it together and there you go. You can do the same thing with abletons standard compressor.
I was thinking of building this in 2009-2010 but didn't have the budget for parts (built only the casual bus comp in 2008) and then went totally ITB. Awesome to see them do this as a plugin :)
My SSL G compressor is even gluier - so what you can do is to open up Waves Studio Rack - then add the Multi-Band-Split function x 5, and add the Waves SSL Buss Comp 5 times !!! Even if the Waves emulation of the SSL Buss Comp isnt the best this works well in a blind test !! - Enjoy !!
It certainly added some magic dust to that track. I'm a big fan of SSL plugins, especially the native channel strip and bus compressor. Intuitive interfaces with just the right amount of visual feedback and they sound really good even without oversampling. I'll definitely be checking this out.
One thing I realized about the latest SSL plugin update - and especially the new ones like the de-ess and stereo mastering EQ (haven't tried the multibus yet so thanks for this review) - they have really went deep into sound coloring. Oh, and yeah - I use SSL plugins heavily for day-to-day work.
A point missing about fabfilter is that you could add multi and drive with Saturn. The crossovers would have to be the same though, which could maybe be done by assigning Pro-MB and Saturn crossovers to a macro. 🤔
This looks great. As a glue I use Cytomics "the glue". A multi band of that would be sweet. I mean I've made one using FL Studios Patcher and crossover filters or you could always split into 3 mixer tracks...but it's always better in one plugin isn't it
Whyte, the G3 does auto gain when you hold the Shift key. Almost all the controls will auto gain with their counterparts when holding the shift key. 😊 After listening to your comparison with the Pro MB and can hear a clear colorization on the G3. It sounds more pleasant on G3.
I've just got it and it is SOOO good on the mix bus! It adds character even when off! I have FF MB too for more complex work but I find the G3 faster to use. Subscribing to the SSL collection has been one of my best decisions! Tx!
I own a few ssl plugins, it is the only brand where I do actually like the "hardware" look. But would like to see in the bottom window a curve of the signal instead of some kind of volume indicator.
i've been using the SSL bus compressor religiously on every single mastering project. No other bus compressor has given me such a good, tight, yet punchy sound in elements of a mix like the kickdrum (which is seen here as well, compared to the MB result which "mutes" a bit the transient). Can't recommend their compressors enough. Definitely grabbing this one for use both in mixing and mastering.
I've been doing this using the SSL Bus Comp in Waves' Studiorack. A bit fiddlier than having it all in one sleek interface, but does the job very well.
This ssl multiband compresor sounds very good! It's give a warm that is really good to have in your Mixbuss. Sound really nice, the pro MB feel a little bit too flat compared to the SSL
Yes its all subjective but I agree. The ssl sounds more open to me and FF sounds nice but kind of closed up or flat as you say, which might be desirable for a certain type of song.
Why do these companies always put the bypass button on the opposite side of the UI from the output knob? If they are not going to add autogain at least dont make it as hard as possible to AB and then adjust it.
That’s a really good fucking point! How much time and rsi would be shaved off during level matching, if the bypass and output knobs were always a tiny distance for a mouse to travel? Ironically, SSL is THE company that would take that to heart. Their entire existence, long before RUclips existed and mere mortals knew their name, they’ve worked to make mixing more ergonomic by Listening to their users.
@Mansardian I use all the DAWs, but yes. Which is why I didn't think of what he commented. But essentially that's you and I working around a pretty common problem. As a UI best practices default, you Know that every plugin should be level matched. I hear lots of complaints about plugins Not including Auto-Gain in 2023. But I've never heard anyone point out that the two functions should Obviously be right beside each other.
i use most of the ssl plugins and so I am used to there interface. If you press that chain link by all the gain knobs it will link input and output and you can link the makeup gain and threshold
I like the song, but the first thing I noticed is that the bass needs taming. I think you adjusted for it later on. I really enjoyed your review of the plug-in.
For a moment at 1.40 when questioning why its a must have, you did a perfect facial expression of Garth from Wayne's World. Why is analogue multiband hard, that sounds like another interesting video (like the oversampling one last week)
I used it on a song and really like it. The only thing is the Logic Song was on an external SSD, and the "System overload - disk too slow" kept popping up. After moving the entire song to my internal drive it was fine. I don't know if anyone experienced the same thing but this plugin requires a fast SSD. I'm on a M1 Mac Studio Ultra so the computer should be fast enough.
I always have the SSL bus comp in my mix bus while compressing the low end in a different stage so it wouldn´t hurt to have this one ;) and I like the way it looks, thanks.
I'm evaluating this right now, and I think it's an excellent tool, although I am wondering out loud about how other multiband compressor licenses that I own could largely fit the same bill... I would recommend comparison with PSP's Old Timer MB and McDsp's 6034 Ultimate MB. Alternatively, one could load multiple VST3 versions of SSL bus comp into Waves Studio Rack, but the user experience is very cludgy compared to the dedicated interface of this plug... In playing around with it, I'm struck by the excellent sound and workflow. My free trial ends in 2 weeks and it flips to rent to own... I'm leaning towards not interrupting that flip.
You could use the Fabfilter Saturn 2 to add saturation to the Pro MB, a lot more versatile saturation options but also a lot more work to dial it in compared to the SSL, and Fabfilter having it as a separate plugin is their way of making more money! Great vid as always, thanks for posting!
Well shit!...that's really good isn't it!. On top of that "SSL sound", the addition of the drive control is a deal maker!. You can almost remix a track.........but the best thing about it is, SIMPLICITY!. Everything is clear and right in front of you. No hidden menus or duel function "buttons". Anyone can understand this and make it work, from novice beginner to advanced pro. Well done SSL 😏👏👏............Dance Storm never sounded so alive!!
3 things the SSL G3 does in this clip that the Pro MB does not: 1) There's more click to the attack 2) The high band release is less transparent, giving it almost a Dolby B noise reduction sparkle 3) There's some weird pumping/breathing in a few parts of the song that don't happen with Pro MB To me, the Pro MB is very transparent whereas the SSL G3 sounds unavoidably compressed here.
I tried their SSL bus comp 2 some months ago and it was very pleased by its transparency compared to other emulations. Im wondering if its possible to use this plugin as a 1-band compressor like a normal SSL, considering it would offer more posibilities also at a lower price compared to the bus comp 2.
Really sounds there is also going something on with stereo-linking on the compressor, when you A/B the SSL and the Fabfilter MB you can hear the mono channel staying very centered on the MB when the SSL pulls up a lot of activity from the side-channels
Thank you for making the video. I think I like SSL just too much and I am using a lot of their products.... well - I cannot think of not using their products since I like those a lot. Weirdly enough - SSL mix sounds like SSL - warm and nice whereas Fabfilter - Clinically clean but functional. So, I guess Fabfilter is good for mastering since it leaves no traces whereas SSL is good for anything else (in my opinion). Thanks again for making a nice video!!!
Never thought I'd consider something over ProMB. There's something about the interface that is concrete, what you see is what you get, and hearing the results speak for themselves. ProMB is very user friendly and efficient but does give the option to use many bands and overcook quite easily. I'm not sure I'm the greatest fan of ProMB's percentages for attack and release instead of time either, its a bit confusing considering every other plugin displays time.
I will use my Finalizer Plus (hardware) until the day it dies; always put it on the master buss and I love what it does. If it dies, I'll consider this plugin.
I´ll definetely demo this and then - maybe - wait for the sale...in the meanwile doing the multiband saturation/compressor thing with KBlue Cat's MB-7 Mixer might be worth a try. Here on the different bads you can use your favorite plug ins and build your own MB bus
I like compression to be as transparent as possible.. Some hardware compressors can add a sonic dimension that's pleasing and in that case cool.. I don't know if I've heard a software compressor/multiband do that intangible pleasing sonic thang !
I disagree about knobs looking analog. You say this a lot, and as a person ditching hardware "which I did love at one time for over 30 years" I love the 3d analog look. Its familiar to me and makes me feel like I losing nothing by going in the box. I think you dislike for the opposite reason which is it will encourage people to ditch hardware. The one GUI look I could do without is large wasteful edges with screw racks. Manufactures please dont waste screen space with extra edges and graphics.
I like skeuomorphs. I know that pure functional GUIs are very much en vogue, but I find them boring and I like the immediate familiarity you have with interfaces that mimic original designs. Add the UC1 to it and the experience comes close to using a console. At least for SSL’s channel strip, bus compressor and 4K B. And, hey, they didnt add fake wooden panels to the GUI ! 😅
The design language of imitating physical devices is limited, in my opinion. It's not that bad, the knobs do a pretty good job of conveying where the settings are at. I'd replace the faux analog meters with a simple fft analyzer. Really helpful when deciding where to set those crossover points at a glance! Also, for a digital multiband, I kind of have the expectation that I'm going to use as many or as few bands as I'd like, and having it set up for 3 bands is a little limiting. Maybe a better set up would be to have band selector buttons (1, 2, 3, 4, ... etc.) that correspond to presets for however many bands. Also, the ability to split a current band into 2, or split two bands into three, is all you need to put together your uber versatile digital compression where you've got a band for dealing with sub bass, bass, mid, hi, and very hi bands. On second thoughts, maybe more than 5 bands doesn't make much sense.
mby 6 so you can have one dedicated for dessing within the hi-band (that probably would only rarely get used) but other than that .. yeah I doubt more would ever honestly be needed.
I like the sound out of this SSL comp, GUI semi-meh but not a reason why I'd not get it. I think they should have called it the SSL GGC, it seems like it is doing with audio compression what Gorilla Glue does to materials, it's glued together but good. G3... Glued 3 times? PS one of the things I like about your demo videos, you're doing it your way. Upside-down or whatever, no matter, keep doing it.
It's cool, but I'm definitely not paying $199 for that. Your favorite glue compressor (ex. Bx Townhouse) plus DDMF Metaplugin while give you even more control, plus excellent oversampling options. Heck, there's nothing preventing you from throwing ProMB into DDMF, in seperate band splits, combined with your sautrator of choice.....aside from that ProMB wins with its extensive processing ability, such as its sidechain toggle, excellent lookahed, mid/side feature set. Etc
Lindell MBC...is basically the same thing...but API.....I can this and Lindell MBC are probably the best idea on master bus because because You can Compress and Balance out your Highs lows and Mids at the same time
With the Pro-MB, are you usually adding make-up gain so that the signal reaches 0dB at full compression (I know you should use your ears, but is that a good approximation)?
no, try to get your signal the same volume level it was before compression once you dial in your settings, called " gain staging ". vocals in any song are almost never at zero, usually below zero from -10 to -3 area but you know it depends on the track and feel.
@@VeracityTThe is asking about make up gain after multiband compression, not input gain. My answer is yes. The curve should be at 0db after compression
@@benbenzon I usually only use mulitband comps on single sources or on my inner buses. I thought they were asking after using multiband compression and the volume decreases, to use the make up gain for boosting to 0dB but that would depend on if the source was at 0dB before the compression which it wouldn't be starting at 0dB on a single source. Thats why I bought up gain staging to clarify my last comment. But I realize the source in this video is an entire song so the volume would be at zero before compression, thus after multi-band compression then yes use the makeup gain to get back to zero. Or am I still misunderstanding?
Waited and waited to purchase something like this. Bought this a week ago after watching this video, and instantly fell in love with it. So subtle but colorful and gluey. Just what I needed personally
I'm on vacation so I haven't tried the software for myself yet, but on their website it indicates it integrates with the 360 ecosystem, can anyone explain how? I haven't seen any information about it.
it sound almost like with the ssl not only the attack sounds smoother but also the drum (or "things") is/are a little bit delayed. like only a few or less then 1 ms. or its only that (delayed) i played around with delaying (drum) tracks by few ms (like minus 3 ms; like it seems like a magic number; well at least a starting point) in my techno production to get things smoother. this ssl thing feels like it doing something like that aswell. hmmmmm??
Wytse did a video on it a while back, so I put it in my wish list. I got it today for £9.00 on the Plugin Boutique, because I bought BitWig last week for £249.00 and got £10.38 virtual cash plus the free VST, which was Comeback Kid by Baby Audio worth £99.00. So I saved £80.00 on the Bitwig, got Comeback kid for nothing, and got an EQ worth £296.00 for £9.00.
This SSL G3 is on my wishlist. The interface is fine with me, more important there's a nice jar of glue built-in. I'm not a fan of FabFilter, some sound like they're doing a good job, but there's something about them that makes me go meh.
It’s called, You missed a bunch of stuff! Although, this may be one of your best reviews yet. You seem to have gotten the main point: that this is a Glue Compressor, turned into a 3-band Glue Compressor. You also seem to have gotten dangerously close to understanding Why this style of GUI is the most popular and intuitive, and that SSL, who have been the Mercedes Benz of physical consoles, are quickly becoming the Apple of the hybrid audio ecosystem.
The problem is just that RUclips wants the highest “average percentage viewed”, I would love to make my videos as extensive as possible, but I really have to edit some parts out to keep the people watching. Its kinda sad that this stuff works in this way
Okay.... I can be somewhat sympathetic to the fact that This is your business, how you make a living, and your numbers go up or down based on what the Algorithm wants. However, what the Algorithm wants shouldn't trump what You want your relationship with your viewers to be. Nor should the Algorithm's desires be more pressing upon you than your Viewers desires. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you do Review videos of Audio gear, for an Audience that uses and purchase that Audio gear. We watch you Because you review this stuff, Before we go out and buy it. I don't Love your Snake Oil shtick, but the concept of a reviewer warning me/us Away from gear that may be Snake Oil, and explained why, and maybe proposing alternatives, would be Extremely Valuable....to this Community. Placing the Companies/Developers and/or the Platform, RUclips in this case, in Front Of your actual Audience and what they need, is a bit.... Well, I don't need to lecture you about this, but it's not the first time I've seen you try to hide Your decisions behind "the Algorithm made me do it!" Let me also say that, ironically I Really Do think that this is one of your better reviews. And I Hope you realize that many of us in the Pro Audio Community, your audience, are really impressed by what SSL has been doing over the past few years to Reinvent the company once again for a whole new generation and Era. Solid State Logic, IMHO is at the point where Apple Computers became Apple. The world's first Trillion, then 2-Trillion, and now 3-Trillion Dollar company. If you haven't yet delved into SSL360, you should sooner than later. Then imagine what happens if/when, they release 32-channel Interfaces, and launch a SSL DAW.
I don't see how a TRUE auto-balancing would be possible. Compression is not linear as distortion. Threshold doesn't do anything if peak doesn't hit it. Gain reduction happens only when peak hits the threshold, meaning there is time when GR happens and a time it doesn't. The time when GR happens it is not linear either - if a peak just hit over the threshold then GR is pretty much none until attack comes into an action. Same goes for release - it pushes down for a while when peak goes below the threshold then relives the signal and it becomes unity gain. I'd appreciate if someone could point out what I'm missing. All I see possible is to do a fake auto-balancing by different measurements or averaging them.
It’s pretty hard to argue with the ‘sound’ of this plugin. However, in situations where I need multiband compression, 3 bands is never enough. Like I end up with only one band in the middle that actually has the flexibility I need. I find I want at least 7 so I can have distinct compression zones with uncompressed space between. Rarely do I want a band that goes all the way up or all the way down.
For me the SSL sounds more focused/in your face in the midrange, than the Fab. If that is a matter of settings, or the actual plugin, I don't know. But I like it in this example.
track is King Sis- day one
🔥🔥🔥🔥fire track
Ahhh yes King is so dope
hahahaha bruh, i came straight to the comment section in search for that 🤣🤣🤣 the moment he unmuted the rest of the instruments, I was like "WOAHHHH"
Dancestorm by Sadrude
I wonder where he got the multitracks or stems from.
I really appreciate how SSL makes their own plugin interface. You know it's from them because of the look. Also, the plugin sounds great!
that can be said for a bunch of developers though, iZotope, Sonible, Melda, Tone Empire, Fabfilter are just a few. It's visual identity after all.
And I'm sure they appreciate that $300 that you'll be giving them 😂
I like the ssl interface so much that I bought their channel strip even though I had 2. They work very well with my controller, and they just feel so natural and familiar, not to mention stable. Channel and bus comp on every mix for me.
Yeah agreed, and I actually love the analog looking plugins. They are intuitive imo.

It certainly added some magic dust to that track. I'm a big fan of SSL plugins, especially the native channel strip and bus compressor. Intuitive interfaces with just the right amount of visual feedback and they sound really good even without oversampling. I'll definitely be checking this out.
However, the Channel Strip could benefit from a bit more saturation, IMHO. It's a little too clean, and the HQ button provides little to no benefit.
I love the visual representation on the bottom.. I think it will help people just beginning in the multi compression realm

Add the UC1 to it and the experience comes close to using a console. At least for SSL’s channel strip, bus compressor and 4K B.
And, hey, they didnt add fake wooden panels to the GUI ! 😅
Love the vibe in the song. Who are the artists?
darude 🙁
Now that is an intuitive plugin!
Impressive, like the sound !
I love the control layout, some multiband plugins are not clear about what the setting’s actually are.
This thing is it on masterbus....Track Comp, Wiess MKII Full Bus Comp, this one and Lindell MBC....4 best mastering comp vsts out there
It's cool, but I'm definitely not paying $199 for that. Etc
Lindell MBC...is basically the same thing...but API.....I can this and Lindell MBC are probably the best idea on master bus because because You can Compress and Balance out your Highs lows and Mids at the same time
I'd be interested in hearing this up against the Minimal Audio Fuse Compressor that came out yesterday!
Bro was trying so hard to not like the plugin haha, thanks for the review bud ! ❤
Pro MB is clear and/or surgical, and G3 is musical. Both very useful but expensive. Thx White Sea!
@@benbenzon I guess I misunderstood the question, help me out. what do you mean by the " curve " should be at zero?
@@benbenzon I usually only use mulitband comps on single sources or on my inner buses. I thought they were asking after using multiband compression and the volume decreases, to use the make up gain for boosting to 0dB but that would depend on if the source was at 0dB before the compression which it wouldn't be starting at 0dB on a single source. Thats why I bought up gain staging to clarify my last comment. But I realize the source in this video is an entire song so the volume would be at zero before compression, thus after multi-band compression then yes use the makeup gain to get back to zero. Or am I still misunderstanding?
@@VeracityTT Totally get your point, thanks for answering!
This thing sounds great. Love that spongey compression sound. Definitely gonna pick this up
I love the interface personally
I'm completely surprised that you haven't reviewed the Tegeler Audio Schwerkraftmaschine... worried that you'd have to buy it? 😁
I’m surprised about that as well
If you ask me, I'd be worried you'd ask me to spell it.
I can both spell and say it. I live near the German border 😉
@@Whiteseastudio I'm a bit further away. Pennsylvania.
Great day to you out there.
song is great, plugin is great, you are great bro, keep the good work up!!!
Dang!!! I wish they had a controller for this , so I can control on the Master Bus!
ssl nucleus does it all
Mult the signal (via flock?) into 3x Ultraviolet EQs chained into 3x 500 series G-Comp? Or am I missing something?
I love this guy so much
I bought the hardware ssl fusion and it changed my life
Which mic are the vocals recorded in by the way . They sound so good like the industry sound.
Waited and waited to purchase something like this. Bought this a week ago after watching this video, and instantly fell in love with it. So subtle but colorful and gluey. Just what I needed personally
Oxford'da kompressör vardı da biz mi kullanmadık?
I'm on vacation so I haven't tried the software for myself yet, but on their website it indicates it integrates with the 360 ecosystem, can anyone explain how? I haven't seen any information about it.
it sound almost like with the ssl not only the attack sounds smoother but also the drum (or "things") is/are a little bit delayed. like only a few or less then 1 ms. or its only that (delayed)
i played around with delaying (drum) tracks by few ms (like minus 3 ms; like it seems like a magic number; well at least a starting point) in my techno production to get things smoother.
this ssl thing feels like it doing something like that aswell.
hmmmmm??
is that the magic of "glueing", together with the properties of a comp (attack and release)? i wonder.
Nice :) the SSL gives it some kind of 3D + vocal up :) sub si very different with fab
I think I've found my new favorite 2-bus compressor. 😃
PS: I like the design of the interface.
I'm buying the EQ tomorrow while it's on sale.
What EQ?
@@oscillatorstorm
The SSL Native X-EQ 2
1:30 logical fallacy: penicillin didn't exist prior to 1895 but it was a must have since.
Please, can you tell me where you got that awesome hoodie!
So if I have the ssl bus comp and the free waves studio rack I can do the same thing?
i ll use FAB for lows and SSL for mid-High , lows on ssl are a bit choked, highs on fab are too sharp
Artist/song please? Pretty please, with real analog saturation on top?
You should do review of the arx afterburner compressor, you had 4 different bands if you have two of them
Also, de mix is a great sounding one
Song name and artist?
Hi! Did you ever try the Halo Metric multiband? That one is even glueierder! plus it has an audio gain per channel, very handy if used wisely :P
Pro MB sounds muddy in comparison. perhaps its the dynamic phase mode being responsible for that?
You missed the threshold/make up link and the sidechain eq controls.
Its called video editting 🤭
Well, I don't need to lecture you about this, but it's not the first time I've seen you try to hide Your decisions behind "the Algorithm made me do it!"
Let me also say that, ironically I Really Do think that this is one of your better reviews.
Ha!
First one here XD
Thanks for your videos man! Really appreciate them :)
TC Electronic MD4 is on another level for mastering purpose.
The Track is FIRE🔥🔥🔥
sound to me like Xfer OTT .. same bands and possibilities 👍
