  • Hip internal rotation is an essential movement to human function. Many of us are stuck into a hip externally rotated position, putting the pelvic floor muscle in a predisposed position to not optimally contract and relax. We want to allow the hips to oscillate into both internally and external rotation, so that different muscles can shorten and lengthen and switch off from these positions. Focusing on developing control into internal rotation will allow us to use a new range of motion and permit the pelvic floor to move through its full range of motion. Because that is the goal: for muscles to be able to optimally function through their full range of motion. Dysfunction happens when we lose the ability to do this, distributing the on/off reciprocal pattern that we need to create movement.
The first exercise is working on isolated hip internal rotation when the hip is in an extended position. We want the proper muscles to be doing this: that primarily being the anterior fibers of the gluteus medius. Aim for activation in the glute behind the seem line.
The second exercise is in a standing, closed chain position, where we will get co-activation with a concert of muscles working together. Here, the goal is to stabilize the hip with the adductor magnus and anterior glute med to not allow ourselves to be pulled to or fall over to the pull of the cable. The deep core will help us do this as we move the hands away from our center of mass.
