Samuel Ketchum Grave & Story

  • This historical Odd Fellows cemetery holds the grave of an old west outlaw named Samuel Ketchum. But it also has many people from the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. There are still families that visit this cemetery but there are many graves that have fallen in disrepair. Trash is everywhere and there is a counter business next door that is dumping their scraps in the cemetery. You can see these scraps in piles and throughout the cemetery. In many cases it looks like they are throwing pieces just to see how far they can get them. It's definitely sad to see and I feel the city of Santa Fe needs to come down hard on that business to clean up their trash.

    Very commendable for you to take a stand here, and I’m glad you didn’t hold back. And mentioned that despicable marble company’s name. Hopefully this episode helps get the word out more. Politicians don’t care unless the public gets outraged.
    On Black Jack’s brother, I didn’t even know he had a partner brother. It was very interesting to see his grave and hear about the backstory of the gang.
    Great production Rhetty!

      You're right about the politicians not caring unless the public gets outraged. I think they are ignoring all of us from out of state and out of country. We really need their constituents to get involved and demand change. That would do it. I tried to step around mentioning that companies name last time but I feel they should be mentioned now since there has been no improvement. It really wouldn't be that difficult if we could just get the city to impose fines for the dumping. Thank you for watching Ron! No telling what other stories are in that cemetery that we don't know about. Some of those people write in another part of Santa Fe and when the city wanted to move them the Odd Fellows welcomed them into their cemetery. That in itself is city history.

      I have been all over the state and filmed many cemeteries and I have to say that I disagree with you on the overall culture of not caring for cemeteries. That being said there are cemeteries in every state that are neglected. The only state that I think could be an exception to that statement is Hawaii as the laws for land ownership and cemeteries are different with a time period slotted on them. I have posted the article to the top of the comments here as well as a new story post. Something still needs to be done on this cemetery regardless of who is at fault. It's history of New Mexico and Santa Fe which I know is rich in this state. It's a beautiful state and I feel preserving the history of these little cemeteries is important.

    This is so sad and really angers me. My great grandparents are buried in an Odd Fellows cemetery that was incorporated into another cemetery and is well kept. I am not even sure if there are any more Odd Fellows in that town. Again you have educated people with history and civic duty. Graves of people, no matter what their history is, should be respected. Thank you again.

      I agree with you 100%. They should all be respected. Many of the people in this cemetery were in another part of Santa Fe and when the city wanted to build they needed to move the graves. The Odd Fellows welcomed them in their cemetery. Now that the members are aging and dwindling its a sad situation for the cemetery. I'm hoping that a new round of emails to those individuals I have pinned in the comments will helps. Many of them are new in office. The story about this cemetery is simply "despicable" how a company like this marble and tile, could dump all of their trash in a cemetery, is beyond words. I think we did. According to the news article it that came out it was not Captain Marble. I have also heard from the Grand Noble of that Odd Fellows lodge confirming the same thing. She said it was a past member of the odd fellows that requested to have the marble company bring the scraps over in a wheelbarrow. That past member was going to use them for a walkway but never really did. Why they are scattered randomly throughout the cemetery I don't know. But that is not what is important. What is important is that this poor little forgotten cemetery is now being cared for. The last trip I was there I saw two families visiting so I know I will be appreciated. My main goal with this was to just get the city to ensure something was done with this. Not expecting it to be prestine or restored but trash pick up is easy and cheap. Thank you got reaching out and keeping us updated on the status.

    The Odd Fellows have to make a plea to the city for help. You are correct, they are shrinking in membership, but they have liability. They sold those lots and sold them on the basis of “perpetual care.” They also have a duty to preform basic maintenance on the property. Now having said that, how sad for the families that are losing the graves of their people. Santa Fe should be ashamed that businesses are dumping in a public cemetery. Saying that I need to go visit out local cemetery, make sure the same thing is not happening here. Thanks for posting this video.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  2 года назад

      Thank you for watching and commenting. The Odd Fellows do need to reach out more to the city. So do the residents of Santa Fe and New Mexico. That could make a huge difference to the elected officials. The sad thing is the Odd Fellows probably accepted 100 to 150 people from another cemetery that was in Santa Fe because the city wanted to build on top of it. I don't think the Odd Fellows accepted any money on it. The biggest thing is to stop that business from dumping. The prairie dog prevention would be costly. No really any need to mow so they are fine on that. It would be great to get the homeless out of it.

She lost her mother in childbirth and she and her siblings had to go to the orphanage. Unfortunately, the stones were never utilized. The owner of Captain Marble is actually organizing a clean-up. No one tried to speak with them before this posting this which is a shame. ** This is an update **
    12/01/2021 - KRQE 13 out of Albuquerque, NM which is about 60 miles away, picked up the story. They spoke to Captain Marble who stated that they did not dump the marble in the cemetery it was donated to the cemetery because they wanted to build a path with it but never did and that was 10 years ago. They also spoke to a person with the Odd Fellows who confirmed the story told by Captain Marble. The news then asked them if they had plans on cleaning up the marble. The Odd Fellows representative stated not any time soon and that They do not have funds to maintain the cemetery. After 10 years it really is time to throw those pieces in the trash. There is really no cost involved with throwing those out and picking up the trash. It's interesting how the marble is scattered throughout the cemetery. I guess homeless, kids and just random strangers have decided to throw pieces all over the cemetery in the last 10 years. There appears to be bo rhyme or reason as to how they are placed in the cemetery. The next step will be to encourage the Odd Fellows to clean this cemetery up. I've been in many Odd Fellows cemeteries across many states over the years and I have never seen one in this condition. I still feel the city needs to step in and just ensure that something is being done to clean this cemetery up. No need to worry about the weeds and broken monuments. The issue is with all of the trash. The link to the news article is below.
