    I just love the way you tell stories after you find the grave. Kid curry was amazing as a common outlaw. Crazy cowboy and indian times in the 1800's. I also agree that shooting a gravestone is not right. Just leave it alone. I wish always that people would just leave people alone too. There is so much violence against people for no reason.

    The ambiance of that area gives you the feeling of the old west. I've always loved that area. And I'm always fascinated with the fencing around the plots. I wonder if it's the family's way of protecting their own or a display of affluence with the more elaborate ones. Great video sir.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  2 года назад +2

      It really does have that old west feel and especially so with the mountains and lack of vegetation. That's a little drier area with not the best soil conditions and then you have a ton of traffic. I imagine the fences are for both of the reasons you mentioned. There are a lot of Elk in the areas as well as pronghorn and rams. They could all do damage to the markers. Thank you for watching Sheila!

    O'Day was a rough looking character.
    Seeing that you are a huge fan of iron fences and gates if you can make a trip down to Natchez, Ms do so.. The old Natchez City cemetery has one of the largest number of fences I've seen in one cemetery plus a cast iron mausoleum!

    Hey Rhett, Kid was on the run most of his life.
    I remember growing up in Utah, that he was a member of the Sundance gang and that he had a very bad reputation.

I bought a book about Butch Cassidy and The Wild Bunch here recently but am currently reading a book on Doc Holliday. I read once where they called Kid Curry The Wildest of The Wild Bunch. So I live outside of St John's Arizona almost into New Mexico about 20 mile dirt road drive, and I can tell you even in this century if you want to get away and melt into the landscape this is the place to do it. It had to be grueling to ride horseback into this area its rugged and even now the roads are terrible and lonely I can only imagine a stagecoach ride,yikes. Concho Arizona is just to the west of us and this area still has many old Adobe houses from that time period standing to this day. This is a tough place now can only imagine then. I haven't read the article either but I do believe the historical marker just simply being stolen is more plausible. At that point no one wants to pay money only to have it happen again. Let me be the first to contradict Pinkerton in his statement on Kid Curry about having no redeeming value. Either he (or one of his co-horts in crime) before blowing up a express car on the train, let a Dog get away so he wouldn't be hurt or killed. There's something to say about that. He may not have meant much to a human after all that he did, but he meant the world to that Dog. Rest in Peace all who are resting there.

    I lived in a group home in the late 70's where there was a cemetery with people in from the 1700's and we all went there at night. Some of the others wanted to do pencil rubbings of the old tombstones. I told them they're not alone and spirits were wandering and they laughed. Well I had the last laugh when the others ran out screaming in terror.

    That McPherson grave the death date of 1899? That's when my paternal grandfather was born. The interesting thing is that dad's dad was born in the last year of the 19th century, and mom's dad was born in 1900. So I've got 19th and early 20th century in me on both sides. And when history is concerned is that we're born in one century and pass in another and the history we see ends up in history books. But we can say we were there when it happened.

  • @lisanidog8178
    @lisanidog8178 2 года назад

    And if you're wondering what the stones are on top of the tombstones, I was told by my parents that the stones keep the spirits from walking around from that grave. You'll find that on Jewish graves like you noted. I guess we like to keep settled and not wander around but why it prevents the spirit from wandering around with rocks on the tombstone it I was never told that history.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  2 года назад +1

      I really don't believe it is the state nor the city's responsibility to take care of cemeteries. However, the Glenwood Springs Historical Society and the City of Glenwood both help to maintain and care for this cemetery. Overall I think they do a pretty good job in doing so. It is a large cemetery with a ton of foot traffic. Every so often they do trim things back but at the same time they have tried to keep it more in q natural state that is good for not eroding the land on the side of the mountain. They also regularly fund the monuments for replacements, provide news signs, flags etc. It's a different area than what you might see somewhere else. We have to keep that in mind. As far as trimming back on some of the monuments that's really up to every day citizens to help pitch in no matter where that cemetery is at. As you can see from the first video it is no easy trek up there. So the challenge is, how do you get the youth involved? Other than an occasional Eagle Scout project or something similar the youth is generally not concerned with cemeteries. That includes my daughters. I hope this helps some. Thank you for watching Donna!

    Does anyone know if they had a set burial depth or laws of buriel back then, because I've seen some very shallow graves in history docs even above ground just covered with a mound of dirt and even rocks probably due to time energy, frozen ground even risk of dying if the survivors wasted time n energy digging a grave when their own lifes were at risk.
