_Great classic DC10's. The second wide body, UA - N1831U is still in the air, owned by FEDEX, registered as N396FE(appropriately named 'Chiho'). Pretty impressive airframe built in '75! (Forty-five years in service, and still flying strong)!_
Did you ever wonder why the tail engine on the DC-10 is slanted upwards? I asked one of my engineering instructors this. He drew a DC-10 on the chalkboard. Then explained to me the nose of the DC-10 has an upwards tendency. The number two engine in the rear is slanted upwards to push the nose down.
Both of those planes were beauties... so sad they are gone. I wish the DC 10 remained as a passenger plane; i would be more than happy having a flight in a DC 10... so sad
Very kind words and much appreciated! So you're saying in '91, UA brought in two DC-10s for the American Bowl at Wembley? Wow... I'm embarrased to admit it..but I flew for the Bowl the very next August in 1992...on G-BNLP! ..and was so excited about the trip..I never looked to see what the teams came in on!
Thanks, since the merger happened in '67 if you can find prototype photos or videos, you'll see the aircraft carries the company house colors and the titling 'McDonnell Douglas DC-10' on both sides of the aircraft. I do recall all airline timetables listing their equipment as such,
Still exists today as of 2022, but they’re usually now transport cargo planes. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11F looks a lot like the DC-10, but yes it’s sad how it ended it’s commercial flights.
Same here, I once did a AA trip that went PHX-DFW-LAX (DC-10s) -HNL-LAX (AA 747s) -PSA to SFO - AA-ORD-LGA/JFK-SJU-MIA-DFW-PHX (all DC-10s except PSA) in two weeks! It was too cool.
Truely amazing coverage, Thanks for putting this on the internet. The shots from 1:24 - 1:42 is just magnificant and show what the DC-10 was all about. Great comparison with the JBird MD11, and the UA shots are outstanding (the Battleship in the spray!!!!! Wow) LHR never got the UA 10's (in scheduled service) but we got two the same day in July'91 when they brought two American football teams in for a game at Wembley. If I was going to shoot a DC-10 video this is how I would do it.
I believe that the DC-10 has always been called the Douglas DC-10 and still is.. It only changes to a McDonnell Douglas MD-10, after been modified/ upgraded with avionics and systems from the McDonnell Douglas MD-11. Never-the-less, both are amazing and beautiful aircraft! Great video btw, I'm loving these classic tapes :)
Won’t see this around anymore. Even at FedEx they are retiring 3-holers rapidly, with just MD11s remaining now. Very unique shape. Despite never seeing any PAX DC10s myself, they were the largest plane we’d see here up until BA started their 787 service (later to go up to a 747 which I gladly saw for a couple of years). All we see now is a 767. Not bad, but nothing special. Thanks for posting!
Let me add, at least you witnessed the majestic 747! Here's where age has it's advantages, I saw the DC-10 come online and flew every US airline and Mexicana DC-10s...a lot! But the 747 is the one remembered by most, just seeing it in action makes you a witness to the pinnacle of civil aviation history!
@@Starboard76 Yeah used to particularly like the DC10s seeing the third (technically no. 2) engine up on the tail like that. No kidding. The only aircraft at this point that I will have remember seeing enter (more or less) and retire would be the 777. The big twin I call it. About the 747, I had never thought I'd see it regularly before it would be retired given how big it is and how relatively small our city/airport has traditionally been. Was quite a treat knowing that they'd actually be going from a 777 to a 747 just like that. The a350K is certainly big but looks like any other aircraft from a distance, other than its size relative to speed factor. I personally think the 77W seems a bit more impressive at more angles. It's all about proportions.
I think out of all the equipment I've flown in, the DC-10 had the smoothest ride. From strictly comfort wise, it seemed the nose was angled slightly, and the #2 engine stabilised the back (never flew one up front, that was reserved for post 2001 for me) and held the airframe smooth and solid. The only time I ever felt airsick in any aircraft was a Continental DC-10 right out of Denver, but that was due to the storm we flew through, and it only lasted a few minutes. Although a few minutes when airsick seems like days. Thanks for sharing these great images.
Yes the two teams (Buffalo Bills/Philadelphia Eagles) and fans came in on the two UA '10's within the space of an hour of each other. I got some great photos (I'll have to put some of my shots onto RUclips). Both planes left together as well - the teams and fans must have got scheduled flights home ,because as far as I am aware the DC-10's didn't return. This was the ONLY time UA DC-10's ever came to LHR.
Great footage, Continental and JAT Yugoslav airlines DC-10s use to be regulars in Melbourne. Think Thai MD-11 was the last scheduled trijet to grace this part of the world :-(
Excellent video! N132AA had a runway excursion in December, 2000. Substantial damage and nose gear ended up in a lagoon. Repaired and returned to service. Wet runway, late manual extension of spoilers. AC was with Hawaiian airlines at the time. Later with FedEx
Thanks Jones! Yeah man, it has happened to a few buds of mine here with really great stuff and as you know..it's not funny, it's irritating. Keep up the good work man.
Man you have a lot of gems on your channel. I understand the copyright things you put on the screen. I have had videos of my stolen too, luckily all cases ended up in my favor. One video in particular of mine was re-uploaded 4 times! It's called "LOW C-17 LANDING".
If it's as good as this my computer will probably explode!!(and take it from me ,this is better than 'Justplanes' - they are good but this is outstanding)
Nothing really happened to it, just a replaced part of the cowling that is unpainted - very common to see engine cowlings replaced. You can often see it with BA's A319s or 777s. The Olympic Dove livery a319s always seem to have their cowlings replaced often, instead of the special livery it's just the standard blue cowling. With the A 777s (notably G-YMMO) it was flying around with a white replacement cowling for a while :) Airlines have loads of spare parts laying around in case a plane needs them replaced, most of these parts are unpainted or are painted in something else hence why this UA bird had a black one instead of a white one
Ah no, they wouldn't have let it fly without that part of the reversers being there! It can fly with it not working, it can't fly without being there though
Oh gosh no, that would be bad! But seeing that did instantaneously remind me of the UA DC10 that crashed in Sioux City when the #2 engine blew itself up and killed the hydraulics ....
There are about 100of them DC-10's still flying. FedEx got half of them all. The rest is spread out in the world. Biman Bangladesh is the last Airliner still using it for passenger service.
You would have loved Eastern Airlines' 'Unlimited Mileage Fares 499 (USA + PR) or 599 System wide including S.America in 21 and 30 days...as many flights as you could handle.
No..you DO NOT get it! I've had three losers so far clip every video on my channel..my watermark was factor in each case getting youtube to terminate their channels..as the net grows, so will video theft. Hello Starboard....been looking at some of your videos. Excellent work.
Herman
Thanks much Simon!
when were these videos shot? BTW, the videos look great. Wish these DC-10's were still flying today.
My friend...that's impossible, these are all gone! Hopefully, I'm wrong and 1 of each are in a museum somewhere...

Starboard76 hi again, is there any paid or volunteer positions w/the proud and enviable people at Starboard. I would love to be of service
seeing dc-10s in the 80s and 90s were so common, now its less common
excellent shots of grande dames of the air hated LA miss LAX
Great video.
thanks
Re. 1992 - I guess they used scheduled flights or standard equipment of the day 747-1/2 767 etc.. - would ,of course gone unnoticed.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines still used the DC-10 as a passenger plane. As of January 2013, there are 4 left
Agreed, perhaps in time they will go retro with the 'California Sunset' theme and the old Stars & Bars before that.
thanks !
That actually is being assembled...but is probably to be completed by years end.
Love that Battleship scheme.
