It's funny you mentioned opera. There is a video of Britney Slays singing a metal version of the opera song Brindisi with the lead singer of Lords of the Trident (the video is on the Lords of the Trident page). IMMORTAL IS MORE THAN A NAME!
    TONIGHT WE RIDE
Hold on to this moment for all time, this is the night we ride
I hear them calling our name
Raising the flag and fuelling the flame
I'll find my destination; don't tell me where to go
I won't give in this time, feel the power
Not this time, scream it louder
Voyage o'er the mountains and wastelands
Far beyond the sea lies fortune
No regrets, just live for the fight
Renounce your precious lives and ride
Take hold of your steel chariot; though ours is gone, lives on
Rise to the challenge or fall
Nothing will hinder our rise to the call
We'll find our destination, can't tell us where to go
We won't give in this time, feed the hunger
    Not this time, growing stronger
Voyage o'er the mountains and wastelands
Far beyond the sea lies fortune
We'll find our destination; let's go!
Voyage o'er the mountains and wastelands
Far beyond the sea lies fortune
    Fly, redeem tonight
Destroy, renounce your precious lives and ride
    Ride

One of my favorite parts of the guitar solos in this one, particularly the second solo (or second half) is that it mirrored the chorus melody and built on it. It's an INSTANT way to make a good guitar solo that fits SO well in the context of a song.

Brittney is classically trained and her first band was a brief affair as they wanted to be a Nightwish clone, for which she had no interest. Brittney wanted to sing in a more aggressive fashion and to leave the classical stuff behind. She sang alto with a Juno award winning choir, despite actually being a mezzo. For a laugh she sang "Brindisi" with one of the Lord of the Trident guys and did a pretty decent job of it. There's a YT video of it. There's also a phone video on YT of her singing "Queen of the Reich" at a karaoke bar after a concert.
Unleash the Archers won a Juno award last year so she has won the award in both metal and classical categories. The Junos are Canada's equivalent of the Grammies.
Fun fact: she played rugby throughout high school and university. Her university studies were in creative writing, history and music, which shows in their latest two concept albums, "Apex" and "Abyss". The song you reviewed "Awakening" is the opening track in the story where the evil Matriarch summons the Immortal from his mountain so that he can round up her sons. She intends to kill them in a blood ritual so that she can become immortal as well. Not exactly mom of the year material.
Brittney is the band manager, composes the storylines, writes the lyrics and vocal melody lines. She and the drummer, Scott Buchanan, are the only original members left, plus they're also a couple. The band is actually composed of those two plus the guitarists Grant and Andrew. They go with a "rent-a-bassist" approach rather than have a permanent one. Career opportunity perhaps?

Damn I wish you did the album version to this song(not your fault), as this is the "video cut", so the arrangement in this video is bit different and has a section cut out. There is a nice bass interlude, nothing crazy, but a nice repeating bass riff with some melodic chanting vocals overtop. Maybe go back and listen to it on your own time(if you have have any, judging by the amount of content you push out haha). If you do, let me know what you think.

Enjoyed the reaction! Haven't commented in a while, but felt compelled. Yes, Brittany's vocal style is more alined to theatrical belting than operatic. As a guitar player myself, I couldn't agree more concerning guitar solos. Loved the Vinnie vs Ace comparison. But what came to my mind is Kanami of Band Maid. Can she shred on the same level as Midori and Miyako of Lovebites? I totally believe she can. But she rarely does. She composes the music for Band Maid (Miku writes the lyrics), so she writes her solos expressly to compliment the song. Not saying Midori and Miyako don't do the same. It's obvious they put a lot of work into their solos. But it comes down to Heavy Metal vs Hard Rock. Looking forward to the next one!

Your ears.... Tonight We Ride your ears.
    The Pinch:
to the general audience it adds that feeling like a javelin has been launched... in Brittney's case, add an atlatl to that.
to the vocally educated (formally or not), she choses when to carry the vocal distortion up, and when to not... and the fact that she can do that, and then instantly switch to high cleans shows that it is intentional an not pathological.
the solo: as far as the Archers go, this solo is like NW's Emppu playing one of his single-finger "melodic" solos... you caught that too.... some people think "Is that all you got?" but this one is like a melodic pointilist painting WITHIN THE BORDERS.... none of the Bob Ross Happy Accidents BS ... but you already know all this.
The fact that Grant can play guitar the way he does AND do the upper-register growls is just an wanton concentration of meta l talent.
The fact that Andrew (the other guitar player) has learned the lower growls that the bass player used to add AND now sings some clean leads (I think it's on Abyss, the Album)
And live, Grant and Andrew will add in backing vocals... tho NEVER trying to fill in the Brittney Choir that you hear on the recordings... that'd be insane.
Real last name is "Hayes"... not too much of a stretch to go to Slayes.
Hey great reaction by you. Ya picked off the low hanging fruit ;)
The internet-rumor is that they went down to Nevada after Burning Man and hired some of the vehicle-drivers for this video... it's the only place I could think of where you'd find more than one of those rickety sand-jalopies in running condition, so good on them for taking advantage of a collection of guardrails and windchimes in the form of transport. Lookeed appropriate.
btw, another internet rumor is that the song is about Poncho Villa, and his philosophy/justification for his actions while out on his raids.
I think Britt degree is in History, so she digs up interesting topics for songs.

It's not surprising David you like Awakening more. That is to UTA what Ghost Love Score is to Nightwish with Floor. Tonight we Ride is from an album UTA was defining themselves. They got different songwriters and went from their early death metal to heavy metal/ power metal, so still experimental. Awakening fits the name of the album, their apex (till this day).

    Hi David.
[edit : sorry this is a very long comment 😅]
This is the first video I watch from you. I like it when reactors actually give an analysis and thoughts like you did, as well on a musical point of view as sharing your personal opinion.
I mostly don't like when people pause in a middle of a word or of a note, but each time you do, you go back so it works for me.
16:10 Indeed most people do pay more attention to vocalists, I try to always listen to each instrument and sometimes have to listen to a song like 10 times to fully enjoy it. And in UTA I have to say each band member is extremely talented. They all are awesomley skilled.
27:29 The drummer didn't leave the band, Scott Buchanan and Brittney are actually a couple. Grant, the guitarist who does most of the growls is also still in. The other guitarist in this video is not part of the band anymore, don't know his name. Andrew (Andy) Kingsley is now in his place, and does also some bassy growls (Grant still does most of the growls). He is the one in the video of "Awakening". About the bass they've had many different bassists, now they recently announced Nick Miller became permanent member on the bass after touring with them for a while.
You're right about the guitar solo's. It has to fit the song. Like Mark Knopfler (I know he's not a metal guitarist but he is a fucking great guitar player), when he plays e.g. "Expresso Love", he keeps it simple and since I think 1985 (or 1983 I'm not sure) he lets the saxophone also take a part of the solo. But in "Sultans of Swing" or "Tunnel Of Love", in the studio version the song ends (or actually fades) during the guitar solo, so when he plays them live then he shows his skills.
About not really watching the video, same for me I barely pay attention to what happens on the screen, to me it's the music that's important. I saw in the thumbnails you reacted to a Nanowar of Steel song. I assume on that one you've watched the video, because with those guys you have to 😂. It's probably the next one of your vids I'll check. Don't know if you've already did a Sumo Cyco video, on their clips there is also much happening on the screen so it's also interesting to watch, at least knowing the context.
I didn't know before the end you're actually a bass player (in the beginning you grabbed what I thought was a guitar, didn't really looked in detail at that point). But I wanted to tell you anyway without knowing, you should know in the not video-edited version of this song, after the guitar solo there is also a sort of bass solo or at least a bassy bridge. They also play it when they perform live. It could have been too much but in this case I think it fits the song very well. (Btw, they do sound that good live! It's not the case of all bands but they really do)
Also, I've read the description so I'm not making a reaction suggestion here, but if you want to hear Brittney hitting high notes without that pinch, you should definitely check their song "Faster than Light". So as I said I'm not asking you to react to it, only for yourself 😉. Also, I'm not subscribing yet because it's the first vid I've watched from you, but I'm going to check a few more because I like the way you analyse the songs, and then I should subscribe 😉.

Hi, David. I have to say I’m in complete agreement with you in regards to guitarists going ham. I had misfortunate of seeing Kiss in concert with V.V. He absolutely ruined their songs. So glad they got rid of him. As a bassist, one of the first things I learned was that more often than not, what you don’t play is as important as what you do play. I hate when guitarists forget they are musicians playing a song, and instead try to be gold medalists in the Olympic Shredfest Games. I’m so glad the guitarists of this band get it, and play well within the context of the song. At one point during the solo they even brought in the vocal melody line and it sounded great. As for Brittany singing operatic, she can sing opera. Here’s a link you might enjoy on your own time. It’s totally fun and shows off her talents even more.
