- It’s boyfriend against girlfriend and BMW M3 vs Nissan Z on this episode of Driver Battles: Track Edition. Just in case the classic battle of Japanese vs. German performance wasn’t intriguing enough, we brought out Michael Hillo and Allison Leung to duke it out for ultimate relationship bragging rights. Both Allison’s E46 M3 and Michael’s Nissan 370Z have a whole host of upgrades, and both drivers are extremely quick, so this battle should come down to the wire at Willow Springs.

When it comes to Allison’s 2001 BMW E46 M3 track car, her upgrades place it squarely in the race car world, even though she was still able to drive it to the track. To help her 3.25L BMW S54 engine put out 285hp, she’s added an Eventuri intake system and a Buildjournal tune. As far as the suspension and aero goes, she has added two-way Moton coilovers, a Hotchkis front sway bar and a Voltex Type 5 wing. She’s also added Sparco circuit seats, Volk Racing TE37 OG wheels and 275/35R18 Nitto NT01 tires.
Michael Hillo is actually a prior winner on Driver Battles, that time in his 350Z. This time, he’s upgraded to the newer 370Z model, and it’s very closely matched to his girlfriend’s track car. The engine is stock at 280hp, with a Tomei catback exhaust. For suspension and aero, he’s added Godspeed coilovers, Gktech camber arms and the NISMO aero package. The NISMO love continues with NISMO Akebono calipers, while a Recaro Sportster CS seat is the cabin. For wheels and tires, he has Volk TE37SL wheels and 275/35R18 Nitto NT01 tires.
Both of these cars put out similar horsepower, have upgraded aero and suspension, and have the same tires underneath them. This battle couldn’t be more closely matched, and when you throw in the element of dating bragging rights, we were at the edge of our seats to see who won.

She was basically lapping Willow Springs in the same time as Randy Pobst in an F80 M3, and they were both faster than Steve Millen in a 997 GT3RS and an Audi R8 V8. Someone correct me if I am wrong but even with the mods, those are some Amazing Willow Springs lap times.
That's the NT01 gap
Tire makes world of difference. Randy's F80 was on PSS.
@@chanhyung88 @I R, that's still a big gap to overcome considering the torque, the power, and the modern diffs. Weight is also a slight factor. I'd still say it's a great achievement and it shows how great her driving is to allow her to use the tire advantage, hard.
Shows that all the mods that matter the most are tires, suspension setup, and Seat time at the track.
And the Z is pretty much all stock.
Well she is experienced with that car, and the mod list is very ‘quality’. You’d see massive improvements with this setup. Not surprised at all actually
This couple are literally professional grade race car drivers. Those times are up in the top .5% for the cars they are driving, even with mods...especially that 370z which is basically stock other than upgrades for driving dynamics. INCREDIBLE, and also adorable that they are in love.
The Z did very well considering it was going up against a full-blown track car in the m3.
Also considering how much higher-end a lot of the parts are on the m3 too. Like the moton coilover + eventuri intake alone probably cost as much as all the parts on the 370z
Bro, her build is very far from a “full blown track car” lol. People with E46 M3 as daily’s have better setups than her lol
@@JacesOwnWorld e46 daily’s running $5-10k dampers and full aero? Interesting
Considering it’s running Godspeed coilovers
@@n9athan Some even use lighter carbon panels on their daily on top of that... E46 M3 Folks are normally either close to stock or using near track builds on their daily E46s...
Your hat, the track, the weather
I second this comment
Impressive for basically a stock Z with suspension
The Z is no slouch, but adding more than an ECU remap and an exhaust dramatically changes the nature of the car. Everyone I see on RUclips with turbo'd or blown Z's is more or less building them for drag or red light races, which is fine, but on a race track I would not want any kind of extra power or weight that could upset the natural balance of the car.
This is why a small turbo or supercharger setup with modest linear boost wouldn’t be perfecto!
This has became my favorite car channel to watch on RUclips.
That M needs some love in the braking department.
This is sick. Battle of the significant others. My money is on Stubz in the Z. But his girl is really fast to so it'll be a good match.
Great Video guys! keep them coming.
Motons vs Godspeed… lol who do you think is gonna win.
Actual aero vs plastic doing virtually nothing...
LSD vs open diff...
Pretty dumb to at least not drop the crappy viscous LSD in the Z.
Congrats on the PB's! I understand why the comments are asking why they didn't switch cars but they both built their own cars. Allison built her car to her liking and drove it faster than Michael in his car that he built. That's why we build cars, so we can drive them, not someone else. lol
She's already winning, that M3 in Laguna Seca Blue is absolutely gorgeous. "God's chariot" is a proper name for that beast; the E46 is the perfect coupe.
Please show more inside/dashboard shots during the race.
I just installed a set of Godspeed coilovers in my Z so happy to see them perform so well 😬
Great show, great host
thank you!
Two epic cars with similar power engines, next time to an exhaust battle as both engines sound mint.
Respect from england
I'm cookin up a Vk56 swapped Z32. Cali is a journey to make from the east coast but one day I'm definitely gonna make the trip. Always wanted to run around Big Willow.
That's a beast of motor in stock form. I have a vk56 in my Datsun 620 as a daily driver in CA. Traction is the biggest problem
E46 looks amazing
Would have preferred to see onboard cams for both cars shown after each other. Perhaps overlaid with some commentary about how the car felt.
Still have my mint 2004 350 Z Roadster and cant I get rid of it and can afford more expensive Roadsters .Just a blast to drive!
We need more scenes of the cars on track
i love this idea!!!
Anyone know what width wheels they are running on the z?
Great times!
I'd like to do your Driver Battle. I drive a previous Hertz rental Z06. My pb at Big Willow is 1:30.6 with street tires.
Dam makes me wish I didnt sell my e46, the body is still super nice by todays standards, it wasn't an m3 but was still fun af to drive with a 6 speed.
just started building my 330i lmao. something about e46s are just so beautiful
So it was a stock 370z and not a Nismo (exhaust)? VS an M3? Lets talk about price for performance?
Dude id love to be apart of this
Y’all need to make these guys chase each other
That was a base model 370z without the lsd and auto rev match. Plus he put on some cheap coil overs. At least he put the big brakes on it but come on the Z did great considering the disadvantages it had
Z’s are trash
@@Tree_Seventy Love the sarcasm 🤣
that blue bmw is 🔥🔥🔥
Definitely didnt think a car on te37s would start his car description with godspeed coilovers, I was thinking maybe fortune autos or even BC lmao. That open diff has to be hurting him though
He did mention it was a last minute prep so there definitely more thought that can go into it for the future
just judging from mods and driver, 6/10th between the 2 is pretty much identical times.
To bad the Z was on cheap coilovers(Godspeeds). I'm sure it would have been much more competitive on a better quality set.
The monomaxes have seen several sub 2:00 times at Buttonwillow. Kind of crazy.
My other Z (also featured on this show) went 1:30.9 on godspeeds.....
@@iStubz still doesn’t mean change the fact that a better quality set will improve your times significantly
I could be wrong, but it looks like the m3 has more neg camber going on; all in all, it's a drivers race/good matchup
Its your typical Z owner mods though so it literally is fair.
Well done to the Z. Odd comparison to have a modded track car against a road spec car with just an exhaust. Seems like the z would win it with a simple mod like better suspension
old M3s still perform against new tech power trains too :) love old boxy M3s tearing up the new generation
That was a close battle. maybe one day my 9th gen civic can appear on this and battle it out
I nominate my E36 and myself for the next battle!
Yo whats up with the hat, track, and weather
The drivers' legs are fuzzy in the wide shot with the three of them. Is this just a bad lens that's not sharp on the edges or what?
This couple wins 🏆
10:01 the need for speed emote hahaha XD
As others have pointed out, not the best comparison since the cars are about a generation apart. A better comparison would have been an E46 M3 to a 350z.
I have actually owned both these cars, a 2001 Laguna Seca Blue E46 M3 and a 2013 Midnight Blue Metallic 370z, both cars are great in their own right...but to me the M3 was objectively more fun to drive. Sound wise the 370z could not compete with the ITB of the M3. In the M3 you hear more induction sound than exhaust and it's a beautiful thing on a high reving (for the time) engine. Additionally the gearing on the M3 provided better acceleration and overall felt more fun to drive. Suspension wise they both felt pretty comparable but the 370z definitely felt heavier than the M3 under hard cornering. I loved both cars; my 370z was my daily and my M3 garaged. Anytime I had to drive the M3 however, I realized how much more fun it felt. Ultimately I sold the Z, it was a no brainer; Z's don't hold their value. A LSB E46 M3 would always be more desirable. I currently own the same E46 M3 and an F82 M4, currently looking for a gem E92 M3 but have often considered getting another 370z.
Either car you can't go wrong.
Well to be fair the 370z is almost stock lol
Michael is a way more aggressive driver, im sure he could get a faster time in the M3.
Aggressive diving does not automatically equal lower laptimes. More often than not it can make you slower. Smoothness and consistency wins races.
@L W 😤😂
New Driver Battle? yeah buddy!
Don't have high hopes for the Z with those Godspeed coilovers.
My previous 350z was also on godspeeds, and I don’t think anyone’s gone faster in a Z around most socal tracks than that car, they’re not as bad as people think!
spoiler alert!!
@@DrivingLine My bad, fingers faster than brain. Edited.
whats the weight on the z
Is that wheel horsepower? A tuned E46 should at least make anywhere to 310whp to 330whp
lol! a dyno showing those numbers for an E46 would have a VQ37 at that too then.
285 is around stock horsepower at the wheels. With the build journal tune she's probably closer to 300 whp. With headers, exhaust, no cats she could be 320 whp range.
The M3 only claimed at 285bhp? That's either a typo or she has not looked after it at all, 343 here in Europe.
Middle of the desert in the summer and you're wearing a hoodie lol!! Weirdo buwhahahah
Not bad time split for that Z. Only .59 slower for a close to stock 370z compared to a mildly modded e46M.
To close to call. It would have been cool to swap drivers and see the results.
the 370z is a nice car but the extra price tag it commands over a 350z kind of reduces its beauty as a cheap work horse track car. the e46 m3 is definitely more expensive and to me a much more addicting driving experience with the itbs and gnarly exhaust rasp as you run through the gear. i think it'd be interesting but pretty similar test to do a 350z vs 330ci zhp/e36 m3 comparison which are at similar price points.
370 definitely worth the price gap over the 350.
pretty sure the 0-60 time in the first year the 370 was made was reduced by over half a second.
What? The 350z in Socal are going for anywhere between $6.5k to $11k depending on how beat up it is or if it is high mileage. And since we're in Cali, most of them are fucked up to begin with. The 370z in my area of socal, I've seen go for $9.5k to $16.5k, some even higher than that since it could be a 2020+ Nismo edition, but if we're talking purely on the used secondhand market, nothing over $16k even for a used nismo.
@@baysick6738 nismo will always be overpriced compared to the performance u get from the package, it’s just the badge people want
@@baysick6738 the suspension engine and transmission in the 370 far outweigh the price gap anyway, no point in buying a 350 unless ur tearing it aparts
Who’s win?
I take it they are talking about power at the wheels on the Z since the factory output at the fly is much higher
i missed the #'s but 370 with exhaust puts down in the the high 280hp wheel most of the time
@@joshfullbright7678 So stock numbers then pretty much, which makes sense no tune and only axel-back.
@@joshfullbright7678 yea, if he had intakes as well with a tune hed be making over 300 whp.
Now I need a big wing
Nice save in the m3
Another thing when come to behind the wheel it don’t matter Guy or girl.
Just signed up! 2012 Subaru STI Hatchback! Hopefully will get contacted!
Why is her M3 down on power from factory numbers? 285 is a pretty big drop from 333
285whp. Factory standard E46 M3s hover around 270whp.
I love my charriot! :D:)
Stubbs is the kind of guy willing to lose some fingers for weight reduction and still lose the race jk jk fun video guys 😂
I would love to ride my bicycle on that mountains.
The 370 held up good for being a cheap budget build on crappy tires (I have ran various tires, Nittos incl NT555, Bridgestone Potenzas, Michelins, my favorite is now Pilot Sport 4S) and with an open diff. If he had gotten better coilovers, mechanical LSD, oil cooling and a rear wing I think he would have won.
Z driver is amazing for almost practically a stock car.
Looks like she’s out digging him in the corners…🤔
Getting on the power sooner, and holding the more stable line…🤷🏾♂️
I own a e46 myself things are fun
Simply just driver
Nissan Z vs BMW Z please!
I mean Z wins… dude can go get groceries, drive in traffic with the ac and music blasting, then go put down a PB.
She’s driving a car with no airbags, roll bar, and hardness. After owning the same setup for 4 years as my weekend car that became miserable on public roads… trust me the guy is winning.
Cool stuff but this little unfair. Race car vs stock? Not to mention 370z stock won’t stand a chance M3 stock. 🙁
E46 is 100KG lighter stock, significantly lighter gutted as it is.
Imagine the canyon (touge) edition hahahah
M3 FULLY GUTTED full aero way better suspension vs a stock looking 370Z thats not even a ture NISMO lol okay
Why u crying lol 😂
S54 > VQ always. Not to be a BMW fan, but really, the S54 was something else. And yes, bearing issues, yep, nothing is perfect.
Mike where TF is your strut tower bar?!
Weight reduction bro!
this is probably the fairest battle I've seen coming from this channel
Imagine if the 370z had the same mods, it may not have been as close. Great race guys.
The m3 is also a couple generations behind the 370z. An F80 would’ve been more suitable.
@@user-zb6ez4jl3u the z hasn’t changed since 09
@@saint4105 Not entirely true, the suspension and dampers were re-worked in 2012, the brake pads were changed as was the manual clutch and some other bits in later years. But broadly speaking yes not much has changed since 09.
That said an intake/exhaust and tune would probably all the Z needed to squeeze out a win,
but half a second with different cars and drivers? Close enough that it makes no difference I'd say
both cars did great. IMO
hmmm the i thought the M3 would have crushed the Z more.. but the Z held up... the times over all...are race car times whaaaaaat
Dang she is fast, actually both are fast. I can only manage around mid 1:40's maybe 1:43
2001 BMW M3 has 285HP??? I thought it was 333HP
So a track tuned m3 (barley) barley beat out a pretty much stock 370 cool episode
it IS called driver battles, lol
285 BHP M3?
I like the M3, I'm impressed by the Z.
For thr dame price you can double the whp, chassis, and braking on the Z
Godspeed coilovers slowed him down hahahah,
Definitely think the open diff and cheap coils held the Z back.
It's a nismo it has LSD not open diff
@@ScatMode323 sorry when they were showing the parts list they listed open diff
@@ScatMode323 Only thing is, it's not a Nismo. It just has Nismo aero parts and brakes that he added on. *Derp*
It a complete nismo even the suspension plus don’t get me started
No rev match either
Only stock to stock matters ~ apples to apples - what you buy off the showroom floor.
wait wot ... street setup as fast as a track car
Rad.
Not fair
E46 m3
that girl can drive... i spend a shit tone of time on the race track and that girl can driver better than a lot of the commentors on here.. shes smooth shes fast and her gear shifts are supreme!!
bimmer baby!!
Sup y’all do motorcycles?
Still a Datsun…
I know having a girlfriend with the same hobby as you would make "Necessary" purchases easier to explain. The problem is... You're probably spending 2x for everything. Tires last maybe 2 track sessions, 1/mo you're down 1.7k/mo. They better be both in software/network/computer engineering. O.o
Since when do BMW E46 M3 "only" have 285 hp? Did they de-tune the car? LOL
That's whp not bhp. E46 M3s usually dyno at 270whp. This isn't much, but it's slightly above average, albeit has more left in it since it has an Eventuri intake. Should be 300whp+ with Headers and a Good Tune.
Not a fair battle at all. Less then street tuned Z vs that heavily modded M.
Just great, so this guy with the Z went ahead and spent all that money on aero kits and suspension when he could've upgraded his intakes, throttle bodies, and differential (from open to LSD, and from 3.35 to 3.69 final drive ratio) with a tune. Not a good way to represent the VQ family IMO.
Way more lap time to be found in Aero and suspension vs intake and diff/lsd on a high speed track...
My Honda swap miata would without a doubt humiliate that m3 and z. Hit me up if you guys want me there
the Z should have 332 HP
Its wheel horsepower not crank
The m3 handles so much better than the Z
