The amount of research he puts into his videos is why I’m so addicted to the channel, he gives us quality and not just shock value.
Thankyou so much :)
I have to second that!!
I agree with u Ms.joshice. very interesting information.
LOVE this Channel ❤😉
My co workers use to laugh at me for watching this whole I did my case notes... now guess what?! They get excited when I put it on and always wants to hear the stories. Lol
So John was from a wealthy family but he spent the peasant girl's money. Trifling low lifer.
He was probably cut off financially due to his gambling habit. Why else would he even need her money?
It was dowry that the bride pays to the man and his family. It's common around the world eg India. Although some cultures it's the other way round, the man pays a bride price to the women's fam. And he was prob financially cut off as well.
I'm glad he was caught. What a SCUMBAG
What a piece of utter trash he was.
I guess even back then those type of assholes were already roaming earth
That guy is messed up. *He* was the one who continuously pursued her and basically forced her to marry him. She wasn’t a crazy stalker and didn’t entrap him with a kid or anything, he wanted her so badly, then when he was bored of her, decided to kill her. What a total jerk.
I know. What a piece if shit.
That’s what makes me sick. He kept chasing after her like she was his prey and he got what he wanted from her then killed her :(
I wonder if his gambling addiction didn’t drive him towards her dowry. The fact that he plowed through it, looks like he didn’t have other funds coming in. His family may have cut him off, knowing he had a problem.
@@Catlady-mw4en hmm, I didn’t think of it that way, good thinking! Just so sad how he used her and threw her away, she didn’t deserve it.
I'm glad that Ellen's heartless, selfish husband wasn't able to use his wealth to get away with this horrible crime, and that Sullivan, the man who carried out his order, also felt remorse for his actions.
Rest in peace, beautiful Ellen..
He felt remorse for his own Neck.He was a Cold Killer,as no recent person would do such a Crime .
So very sad, such a young life gone for no good reason. Glad he could not hide behind his wealth.
Poor little girl. It's always so sad when the one person we should be able to trust is the one person we should never have trusted. RIP Ellen Hanley.
💯
She had no chance. Every maiden from a humble farmer family would have been enchanted to wed somebody with status. But Ellen had no way to tell the demon of gamble and bottle was on that "gentleman".
Suddenly Hello Fresh sounds so mysterious.
I had it for one box...I suck at cooking. I cancelled it after the first box lol.
The food is really good if you don't hate/suck horribly at cooking.
Hello Fresh is definitely guilty... of making me hungry
I almost spit out my coffee when I read what you said! Ha! 😂
@@thundernegro "However afterward no trace of my loved ones' hunger could be found *POW*"

Sixteen years old. What a shame, the perpetrators thought because they were high born they would get away with it. But the townspeople made sure they didn't. Great job as always Casey !
Looked up the case as well. It says in numerous reports that Ellen wasn't quite sixteen while others say that she was. Tragic regardless of whether she was fifteen or sixteen years of age. Seems like this monster of a husband only wanted Ellen for her dowry. Once that money disappeared, he had no more use for her and probably planned to wed a more suitable bride that came from a wealthy family.
What a sad story! His estate should have been liable for repayment of Ellen’s dowry to her family after his hanging. Rest In Peace, Ellen.
Not the way a dowry works-no guarantees.
Not sure if dowry's were repaid unless the promise of marriage wasn't fulfilled for some reason? Don't know too much about it, to be honest...
The only consolation here is that her murderers were brought to justice.
Poor girl. First she gets shunted off by her father in favor of his new wife, then her husband has her killed.
The poor girl, she never even had a chance at life. What a tragedy... Another great Brief Case
He may have been rich, but no gentleman.
Poor girl!
Horses are so wise.
Sad to think had she been born less beautiful, just as kind and sweet, she might have gone unnoticed and lived a long happy life. It goes to show that we really don't understand our own trials and tribulations, let alone our neighbors.
Damn this really is a sad & tragic story. She was so young. It's just terrible. Thank you Brief Case 4 bringing such an interesting case this morning. I really enjoy watching. 😊😊
Its evening though

Poor Ellen and her uncle too. I cant imagine what it was like to raise a girl, work your ass off to get a dowry for her, then have her ripped away in the most horrible way.
I mourn the loss of this young woman. A deplorable crime, once again well presented.
Thankyou
😦Man, imagine being a 15 year old kid, foolishly in love with an older lout & using her & ending up like that💔
Why does everything sound so much more important with an English/Australian accent, even Hello Fresh?
Isn't is amazing?!
I'm going to rewatch this! Congratulations on your Sponsor!
Thank you!
@@BriefCaseOfficial you're welcome, Mr. Brief Case!💚🌞💯🤗🤗🤗👻🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟
@@BriefCaseOfficial i already know about hello fresh. It's really yum and also doesn't make my tummy upset ( I'm gluten intolerance and also my stomach gets upset if I eat meat)
I used to hate Mondays, but I'm loving it and it ALL thanks to Brief Case!!!!!
It's a definite help
A bit of a surprise, the wealthy culprit failed to escape justice! Also nice knife work by Brief Case!
I believe by the 1800s the aristocracy have fallen out of favor in profit of the bourgeoisie, holding not only wealth but most influence in the state's affairs. Even more so right as the murderer was of minor nobility.
I don't know how it was like in Ireland, but that's how it was like in France after the french revolution. I am sure the culprit would have escaped justice if he was, say, a banker with a lot of people owing him...
I'd say it was a refreshingly pleasant surprise that he couldn't use his money to get away with his crimes.
Ah, yes. The convince someone-to-marry-you-then-murder-her-the-second-you-tire-of-being-married shtick. Classic.
It kind of sounds like he only married her for sex or her dowry in the first place. He murdered her immediately. I wonder if he planned on killing her from the beginning.
@@Catlady-mw4en I hadn't even considered that, but that certainly could have been the case.
But it wasn't arsenic for once.
I guess getting a divorce wasn't a option back then.
Do we know if they married or if this man wanted her dowry and once he got it tossed the bride? Some sources state that she was waiting to be wed before she was killed. Others say that she eloped with the man that became her executioner... the reports aren't very clear on this.
Well, that was totally outrageous! That just goes to prove that even if someone is born into wealth and privilege and are taught all the social graces it doesn’t necessarily make them a gentleman. He was actually as far from a gentleman as a person can get. It’s fitting that Ellen is remembered. I bet John’s name is mostly forgotten.
hello.. 2 years ago I know but just had to say, It's doesn't need to be proved that money can make a person good. In fact "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of god"(the source of everything good etc)
This sounds like ",A place on the Sun" with Elizabeth Taylor * Shelly Winter * Montgomery Cliff..
Tragic end for all
I love when they’re from 1800’s!! I like to imagine how people lived and thought back then and this channel is perfect!!
Thankyou
The wagon horses that were taking Scanlon to his execution were like "No. He can walk and get heckled like he deserves."
P.S. I was in fear for BC's fingers when he was using the cheese grater to make the lime zest😧.
The horses: "The rotten bastard can walk"
*Horses pulling the carriage* "Nope. Not gonna pull this carriage. The dirty mother- "
*carriage interrupts, admonishing* "Don't say that."
*Horses* "We're gonna let him walk to his hanging."
I think the horses were just loyal to the local nobility and refused to take one of them to the gallows. Even the horses.
...The horses said, "nay".
I can actually sympathize with Ellen's position. In a previous incarnation I was Vlad the Impaler's first wife. However my dowry was too small so he shoved me out of a window to my death and used his Ottoman Empire connections to frame it as an invasion-induced suicide. In this lifetime I was born into an even lower status which invited even more trouble. But right or wrong, those horses sided with their nobleman. Like clockwork. Trust and believe.
I love the sound after he says he couldn't get a divorce
i jumped when i heard it - went back to it after reading your post and jumped again 😁
Kind of reminded me of the "boom- bom" in "Law & Order"!!!
this is like if Jane Austen wrote a murder mystery novel
I thought immediately of Willoughby.
I’m saddened by this tragic story. Unnecessary loss of life. 😢. May God rest her soul.

This is a great way to start off my busy week that I've been dreading. Work will be crazy but at least I've started it right. This case is truly sad and tragic. What an evil man he was. As least he didn't get away with it.

The artwork is outstanding on this episode. Ellen’s eyes were the eyes of youthful optimism and romance, even though she had no idea of what was to come.
Great narration as always.

What a heartbreaking story :(. Congrats on your sponsor, Brief Case; and thank you for the amount of hard work you put into your research for the sake of our entertainment.

Poor lass! What a scoundrel. This happened far too much back then, not always ending in murder but definitely ending with a broken hearted young woman. So pleased to see not only a paid promotion but adverts as well!! Great work, BC!!! You’ve earned it.

The part that making it so hard to accept she had many admirers and potential suitors. Why on the earth she married the wrong one. Poor girl
Sad how Ellen's mom death started the chain reaction of what would be a horrible death to this young girl. A father's top priority should be their children why would he have sent the little girl away to begin with? I blame the father, she would have lived a wonderful life at home I am sure but then...BC would not have a story to tell. RIP Ellen Hanley
Wow, that is a stretch!! Maybe if she had stayed at home something even more horrible would have happened to her! There is nothing whatsoever harmful or unfortunate that she went to be raised by an uncle and his wife. It certainly did nothing to precipitate this murder.
I know of 3 dead separate occasions when if my actions in the previous week had been slightly different, they would not have died when they did. That fact does not in the slightest make me responsible.
Possibly if i hadnt stubbed my toe on a curb in Humptulips WA, on June13, 1982 i would be a billionaire by now -- who really knows??
