    What do you think about this format? Short, one point videos about a very specific topic?

    • @eddierudolph8702

      Some topics it's very good, but don't quit making the longer ones

      On my watchlist videos under 5 minutes get watched fastest. Then under 20 minutes. Over 20 minutes I usually only watch when I'm cooking.

      They are nice mixed with longer format videos. I find most shorts to be a bit too short (although Matt pushes the boundary)

    That’s a better idea than what was depicted in that Far Side comic where the knight complains about having to be on the skins team when they are doing shirts vs skins.

    This strikes me as odd. Usually, you'd use colors of things like shields or tabards. Armors? Next level. But it allows for personal noble's colors to be used on the shield I guess.

    In the Gripsholm Palace in Sweden there is blackened (described as sootened) armour (cuirasses and arm greaves - I forget the appropriate term for plate armour worn on the arms, but full upper body plate armour at any rate, plus helmets) from the 17th Century (yes, they did joust at least into the 17th Century) and used for jousting (i.e., jousting armour).

    Interesting info!
    I like the format of you on one side of the screen, and the thing you are talking about on the other side.
    You've used it before, but this time it seems even better than before.
    Perhaps due to more space between you and the illustration, so it's easier on the eyes?

    Scale on a forged black armour is harder than the steel. So I do wonder if it would add extra protection.

    • @thorwaldjohanson2526
      @thorwaldjohanson2526 2 месяца назад

      Depends on the steel. Martensite is harder than magnetite. But it does not really matter, as the oxide layer is incredibly thin. Oxidation usually has a more negative effect on the steel composition close to the surface. But we are talking about medieval armor, where steel and heat treatment was not super homogeneous and controlled. So in short, probably doesn't really matter.

    • @ArmourArtist
      @ArmourArtist 2 месяца назад

      @@thorwaldjohanson2526 well it would also depend on the hardness of what is trying to get through it. If it is early on and you have an iron breastplate but people are shooting iron arrowheads at you. a planished scale surface should make it harder for an arrow to bite in.

    It even appears that some teams had their sponsor's logo on their armor; obviously the last one might have belonged to a member of a team sponsored by a garden store.

    Speaking of teams, on Matts comment thread a person said, in history, fierce mercenaries of some sort wore black armour to intimidate the foe. Can't remember who - Spanish? German? - but imagine ... Heavy Cavalry Mercenary Shock Troops, in dull mat-black full harness, a tide of Death, smashing through your formation mowing down your comrades, etc, etc.

    • @cmur078
      @cmur078 5 месяцев назад

      German 'Black riders' I'd imagine. Early pistol-armed cavalry. Though to be honest I'm not sure how accurate the idea is, I know them from a Walter Scott novel.
