Today we look at what I think is one of the best "beginner" hillstream loaches. Beautiful, easy to feed and obviously very breedable- they are an excellent addition to a tank with high oxygen content that is well mature. I have 6 and I love them. I got them from Petco and thought they looked like mini sting rays lol. They some hide a lot and I'm not sure what they're eating I've heard they're hard to take care of but it's been 7 months. I put zucchini in there but my other fish gobble it up. I've seen them spit out the flakes as well so I know they're not eating that. But they're awesome though.
All different sizes everywhere - looks like my tank! Mine are the reticulated variety. I like your spotted ones. And as everyone agrees... sooooooo adorable!
Every since I first seen them on channel. I fell in love with them, I’m working on set up a tank for hill streams now should have done in month. Can’t wait👍👍
They're from what I remember they do it successfully in the Wild (they die@ the end of the spawning run just like salmon) where they migrate from the Mountains to the lower streams before spawning.. only 8 known accidental breedings in captivity but successful breedings since there natural environment has be duplicated down to the letter.
hi im from (mizoram) north east india loved your channel especially hillstream loaches and breeding them thank you for your videos learning lot of things ..😁😘
Ive been waiting on a video like this for months! I have a little group of 7 and so far, no spawning activity. I think I have the setup and food down, but by looking at this, I think my substrate is wrong. It's just very fine sand at the moment. So if they have spawned, the eggs probably didn't make it. I will try and add some different size gravel on top of my sand in different area and perhaps some of those cool looking caves. Thanks for the info Rachel 😊
Hi Rachel, I've got a few in a planted tank but was super curious about what the decoration is they are hiding in that you have. It looks awesome and great for them to play and hide in.
Checking out this video because I just got two with two trios of guppies. They are currently in my 10 gallon quarantine tank until they are moved, and last night I heard rustling in the tank and I look over to see one of them digging a big hole in the substrate. Fast forward to today and I see one of them doing some weird "dance" type of thing over in the hole. Fingers crossed that if they spawn the guppies don't eat the eggs/fry haha
Thanks for another great video your awesome. I have 4 of these guys in a custom tank i made. I have had them for about a month now and have witnessed that playful dance in the water column like you mention hopefully I can see some fry soon. Wish you and your fam all the best.
So adorable and entertaining! Maybe they'll make your next "Who's the WIggliest?" video. I would love to keep and breed these one day, but I don't have an appropriate tank or mates at the moment. Thanks to this and your other sewellia videos, I'll be ready when I do
I purchases 2 panda loaches and they look alot like the babies you have. Am wondering if they are the same. Spendy, but mine are very cute and doing well in a established planted tank with nano fish.
I'm not a fan of small fish species, but those Hillstream loaches are fascinating. If I ever convert one of my tanks to the community style aquariums, I'm definitely going to check these guys out. And that's something I would never have shed prior to finding you on RUclips.
N00b here. Unfortunately my first attempt with these little guys failed :( But this video really wants to make me try again. Thanks for the tips love this channel!
I've got a 20 long with a lot of Amano Shrimp 2 small Panda Garra and 2 Hillstream loaches. About 2 weeks ago I noticed there were about 6-8 babies. Now it's 2 weeks later and I'm having trouble counting them all. I wasn't even trying to breed them but I'm extremely happy they did. Just love those fish, I have some in my 38 gallon upstairs. They range from about a 1/4 inch. to nearly 3/4 of an inch. Does the size difference mean there were multiple hatching's ?? I'm currently running a sponge filter & an air stone. They seem to be doing really well. The one thing that bothers me is that I can only see one of the two parents at any given time. I used to see them both on numerous occasions but now I only see one and I can never tell which one it is.
The Male has shoulders, Females heads are shaped like the letter A. They have 10 babies at a time. Feed live baby brine to induce a spawn. I have been breeding them for 4 years
Would they be a good fish for a large planted tank with lot of large rocks? Looking for something to help keep the huge stones clean other that the go to bristle nose. I like that they are smaller since the tank is stocked with smaller peaceful fish. Harlequin rasbora and Cherry barb and Pygmy corys are its only inhabitants.
I put 1 of these guys in my tank, with a pair Danyo's, a khuli loach and a group of nano tetras, and the Danyos are really scared of it, and the Tetras too, they keep looking at it, and are totally freaked out at it, the poor Hill stream is not aggressive and just minds his own buisness, but they're scared of it, they don't attack it, just freak out completely, like you would if a big spider was on your bed at night, come to think of it, they move like spiders do actually, and are very alien looking, so maybe that is why they're so afraid? Maybe you have an answer?
I just got some I put in a 10 gal high flow breeder I have 4 very large ones in it. The fish seller thinks they might be wile caught because of how large they are. I have 6 others in my community tank not even close to the size of the new ones. Like the biggest one is almost 3 inches long and wide. Question is do you think I can get 4 of them to breed in a 10 gal all to them self’s I have a lot of O2 going for them and a power head with lots of smooth rocks.
I recently obtained 2 hillstreams they hide in my cave decoration, during a water change I noticed fry in the tank do they require any specific care? I did try feeding some egg yolk not sure what to do if anything
I might be wrong but the fish that are being called fry look like Panda Loach(it's another algae eatingb head water Loach however they only get 1/3 the size of Hillstream Loaches& they tend to have white& black stripes or Black& white stripes)
My sewellia are super boisterous fish. They can't harm anyone but they have attitude. Mine live with pea puffers. Peas don't dare even to look at them.
Hey Rachel! I’m so jealous!!! I have only spawned Sewellia lineolata multiple times but never my Sewellia sp. SEW01. I have an adult male (probably a bit over 2.5 inches) and a fairly large female (almost four inches in length). She’s the dominant Sewellia because of her size and I’m assuming that they won’t spawn because she’s too territorial/dominant. The male also flees from her. So by any chance, will you have some for sale in the future? Love your videos btw!
Hi Rachel, I have Discus and Altum Angels, I expect that their temp is too high to keep these little treasures - I keep various plecos but my BBA isnt touched by them. Would you have any recommendations on what I could stock?
What temperature would you say these fish do well up to? Im really wanting some but Want them to thrive. I currently have a 26C Tropical Community tank
Some fish don't always need ideal conditions to breed. Like humans, they can breed in a range of conditions. For example a humans ideal breeding environment is a warm bed inside a warm house. But we can equally still breed successfully outside, down a back ally, up against a dumpster in the freezing cold, less than ideal conditions but we can still do it. The same goes for the majority of fish species.
I'm having difficulty trying to get them to eat prepared foods. They are in a fully planted aquarium with otos but they don't seem interested. I've tried repashy, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetable, etc. I'd be more comfortable if they were eating some prepared foods versus cruising the glass or looking for stuff on the rocks/driftwood. Mean while the otos are getting really fat and lazy.
I'm at a loss and need some help. I have 5 WC Gastromyzon Scitulus which I can't get to take any prepared food yet. Just trying to grow algae on the rocks of the QT tank right now. I've tried algae pellets (2mm), frozen daphnia, and various other omnivore pellets. Any suggestions?
Yesterday I bought a pair of hillstream loaches for my planted tank they were hanging around all good. But today am not find them anywhere in the aquarium. So can you please help my where it can be?

How can I get some from you?
Hi, where did you get these oval caves? Can you please share the link?
It might be the best breeding video available on hillstream loaches I found.
Maybe it's me but I just find myself smiling when I watch them, they are hilarious.
They're cute
They remind me of bumper cars the way they annoy each other and bump constantly
Same. I bought two and they make me smile. I went and bought one more today.
All different sizes everywhere - looks like my tank! Mine are the reticulated variety. I like your spotted ones. And as everyone agrees... sooooooo adorable!

I also like to have a similar setup in near future. I am really fascinated by these hill streams.
I love these guys! I always thought they would be hard to breed. Thanks! I'm working on a few projects right now, trying to breed my CPDs.

Great Video. You are amazing at describing and giving us detailed information and specifics. Very informative. Thank you!
They are so cute. They remind me of cories with their wiggling all over the tank. Looking forward to seeing them in the hillstream tank.
👍💕👍
I’m breeding my red blue eye dwarf rainbow fish right now, thx to your spotlight video

At first, I thought the babies were tiny Yo-Yo Loaches! The pattern seems very similar to me. These are some really fun fish to watch!
I love these fish! So busy and cute.
They are fast little suckers, love your channel.

I can't believe how cute those juveniles are

Whoop whoop! Finally finally found them for sale. Got 7. Half alien, a quarter freshwater stingray and a quarter insect about sums them up.
thank you Rachel, eventually I will just have to do a tank for those little cuties,
I love these ..all are doing wonderful job...u have so many babies of hill stream ...cool vedio
Very cool fish! Congrats! 🎉
Love em! So great. I want a larhe group for a biotope tank.. id love love love to breed them!
I accidentally bred these back in 2007/2008 :) great vid! I do have some photos of the babies and mom and dad as well - had all fake plants then
Those striped baby wigglers are too cute! 😁 ❤️
Great video. Never seen these in a store. They are fascinating. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
What a beautiful fish.
THEY'RE SO CUTE!
5:53 when i hear some fire lyrics on a rap song... sorry had to lol love the video!
Thats awesome!
These are so dope. Thanks for sharing.
I love this so much. It makes me want to breed them.
They are so dang cute.
I would love to have some of these and start breeding them.
You can't in captivity, There natural environment has to be duplicated in the home Aquarium in order to be successful.
Rachel, where did you get the flat pleco caves?
You got the touch!
They are so cute 😙

Hi Rachel, i just purchased 3 Chinese butterfly loaches and was wondering if they are similar?
AWww they are so cute
Love these! Where do you find them? I am having trouble finding some.
Thanks, these guys are great! :-)
so sinking cute!
Great and informative video. Where can I get a few of the flattened caves for breeding? TIA
They are called calvus caves and I get them at plecocaves.com
Can you do a new species spotlight on sparkling gouramis? I can't find a comprehensive spot for information on them.
You mentioned the borneo suckers breed differently, what are the differences? I may be getting some borneo suckers I may want to try breeding.

Aaaahahahha, i love it , spawning in quarantine ..😄👍
Pretty much how most people would of spent 2020 😅😂

I have 6 others in my community tank not even close to the size of the new ones. Like the biggest one is almost 3 inches long and wide. Great video! I have care question: do they live happily with shrimp?
Yes
Cool! Thank you, been on the fence with these guys in a community tank
If i add cherry shrimp as tank mate, can that fish breed? Or cherry shrimp eat the hillstream eggs?
They are cute! So all these fish are the same kind? The small ones look so different.
yes, all the same fish in that tank
@@RachelOLeary thanks for the reply 😃
Love of Pets same fish. The fry/juvies undergo some interesting color pigment changes just like panda loaches. 😃
I might be wrong but the fish that are being called fry look like Panda Loach(it's another algae eatingb head water Loach however they only get 1/3 the size of Hillstream Loaches& they tend to have white& black stripes or Black& white stripes)
They weren't panda loach, they were born in that tank from the sewellia
My sewellia are super boisterous fish. They can't harm anyone but they have attitude. Mine live with pea puffers. Peas don't dare even to look at them.
That’s a lotta babies 😮
Hey Rachel, what do you think about keeping these guys in a small but very long tank like one of those 3ft 12 gallons that's popular?
I think that if there is adequate turnover rate, and the tank is well mature, it should be fine.
Hey Rachel! I’m so jealous!!! I have only spawned Sewellia lineolata multiple times but never my Sewellia sp. SEW01. I have ONE of this type and am looking for more. Can’t find them locally, only from websites that want an arm and a leg for them.😩
Hello Rachel, what are the other fish in that tank?
I'm pretty sure they're Yoyo Loaches.
I don't see these at any pet stores lately like I used too.
They are seasonal
I'm having difficulty trying to get them to eat prepared foods. They are in a fully planted aquarium with otos but they don't seem interested. I've tried repashy, algae wafers, shrimp pellets, blanched vegetable, etc. I'd be more comfortable if they were eating some prepared foods versus cruising the glass or looking for stuff on the rocks/driftwood. Repashy soilent green- it's an aufwuchs replacement
@@RachelOLeary Also have tried that with no luck.
@@RachelOLeary Actually I'm wrong, I tried Super Green. Hopefully I can get it soon enough to try.
Soilent has algae and crustacean, super is just algae. I find all fish to prefer soilent. Good luck. You can also try baby brine
Yesterday I bought a pair of hillstream loaches for my planted tank they were hanging around all good. But today am not find them anywhere in the aquarium. So can you please help my where it can be?
I'm just going to ask because I have been curious (stupid question or not lol) are these in any way related to plecos? They look so much alike to me. Thank you for the video these little guys are awesome.
Nope they are loaches
I love hillstream loaches they are so much gun to watch . But Q . Do you know much about L018 pleco also known as golden nugget pleco . There is not much info on them. I have rescued one from a pet shop . Picked him up for half price as no one wanted him amd he was being deleted from stock
Could you tell us what tank size they where in ? Just curious
Is 30x22x26cm planted tank is enough for 2 pairs of hillstream loach
What’s the optimal beeeding temp??
Are these also called "spotties"? I ordered some of these but they turned out to be beauforti sp. And we're in really bad shape , I lost half of them the first 24 hrs. And was so bummed out even though I got a refund but to top it off they aren't swellia sp.!!! Very cool video Rachel ✌️☮️🌿🐟
I’m new to you channel and would like to purchase the flatter caves can you help with that
I wish I had that many
Hey, good going, is there a waiting list? 6 individuals? South Amboy Nj?
they are ready to go! Feel free to email me (you can find a contact tab on my website, or under my about section on youtube, instagram and facebook). :)
do you think you can breed them together with shrimp??? do they eat baby shrimp??
They eat cyanobacteria?
I have a out break of cyanobacteria bacteria and cant get it to stop. Used hydrogen peroxide, tried api co2 booster and no luck. Would a hillstream loach be a good option to fight this or is there something else you recommend to get this cyanobacteria under control?(really wanna avoid using antibiotics if possible)
I am sure that if they have other options, cyano would not be their first choice by far, but they did clear my tank of it quite quickly
What are those little striped fish are they yo-yo or skunk loaches
im wanting to try hillstream loaches instead of having a pleco, how many would you recommend in a 55g planted community tank?
How well they would do depends on a few factors- temperature, filtration, and how long the tank has been set up. With these guys, they are easier to feed then a lot of the hillstream loaches, but still do best in a tank that has a lot of time to mature so it has a bunch of biofilm developed. As far as stocking density, I would get 1m/2+f. They are fine alone, or in groups, but the males can get a little snarky, so having adequate sort of territories for them is a good idea (i.e. rock formations, driftwood, etc). hope that helps!
So wait they change shape as they age too?
What are those aquarium pieces? Would love to get them for my babies! 💕
Oop! Calvus caves. Got it!
Hello Rachel, what are the squashed pipes called and where do you find them?
Calvus caves, I get them at plecocaves.com
@@RachelOLeary thanks Rachel, I'll have a look
So by your experience Hillstream loaches will eat cyanobacteria? Or did they just scrape it away in search of aufwuchs and algae?
I am sure that if they have other options, cyano would not be their first choice by far, but they did clear my tank of it quite quickly
