What's up guys, welcome back to my channel!
In today's video, you'll see Phil Wheddon (former USMNT & USWNT Goalkeeper coach), break down the 3 different block shape techniques used during 1 v 1 situations; short block, long block & short/long block using the opposite hand.
What I loved most about this clip was how patient Phil was with the young goalkeepers he was working with. He really made sure that each of them not only understood what he was teaching but that they could actually perform the technique while grasping the WHY behind each movement. His coaching style not only made it easy for the goalkeepers to follow, but it made it easy for any coach to follow as well!
Visit Phil's website GkOne.com for more information about his career as well as different programs he offers! He is the Director of the IGCC (International Goalkeeper Coaches Conference), which is held at the IMG Academy facilities in Bradenton, Florida. A great resource for goalkeepers as well as for goalkeeper coaches of all ages. Make sure to check his website for more information!

@@progkacademy Well thank you for your interest and good luck
Can the next video be about how to go in when catching a rebound ball from a freekick or 1v1 so how should i face the ball or attack it in that situation
Super 💕
So its either The futsal Block save or split save (but a different version due to bad flexibility). I personally use the neuer one (from ur instagram, not mentioned in the vid) a lot in "normal" 11-a-side football, idk why just feels natural, while in futsal ill always use the block/split save.
Interesting topic
I suppose the best way to do it in my imo, is probably what ter stegen does tbh.
great coach there. i have the same gloves lol
Hey just subscribed !
I’ve been introducing the “K-stop” or what they call the short block in the video to my goalkeeper . I understand this is for close in on a 1 v 1 opportunity . I’m having a hard time understanding when the “long block” would come into play . Can you make a video with you showing these two techniques in a practice session that you have ? Thank you !
Watch ter Stegen and yan sommer in 1v1s the long block or the spread save is their main way to go, mainly ter Stegen kind of sits on his heel and covers all the space between his legs and has the advantage that other keepers like de gea or neuer where they basically sit on the grass which takes some seconds to get up which could lead to a goal but since ter stegen is more on a standing up position he theoretically can get faster than the latter
What were the keepers doing when they were waiting for the blocking drill?
if here like me asking some one to take a shot on me
So Phil planned the session in a way that all 6 goalkeepers were working & no one was just sitting around. So after the block activation, you moved to the next station where you'd serve 2 low balls at the goalkeeper, forcing them to make the decision: do they drop their knee to make the save OR scoop it up the without the knee dropping.
In my opinion, his goal was to force them into a decision so that nothing was scripted, just like how you'd approach a 1 v 1 situation!
I think the block save is effective, but the long block save?
Injuries and how about safety with the technique? I am a traditional keeper and we came out certain techniques because of safety purposes. Like the top hand creates a window to protect your face.
I just wonder how your knees and your body reacts over time with training this method. Block save yes, but long block?
Yes, if you can do a video of breaking down the body mechanics of the long block how and when.
Also, a break down of the spin recovery. I see a lot of male keeper coming off their back leg I feel female gk struggle with their strength and come over their front leg.
But how would u use it in a in game senario bc ur not just gunna stop and a do that so my question is how do i get in thta postition
1v1
These are drills to Improve your technique and shape in 1v1 scenarios. Better shape increases your chance of saving the shot

I cant see any situations that this should be good to use. IF the ball hits u straight on, yes ofcourse. But u are totaly immobilsed to react or act on a ball on the ground beside u and u are not able to follow with the striker to throw your self to save the ball infront of the feet.
If u stand in a traditionell low stand u are able to react to either side to make the save. Now u are lucky if the ball hits u straight on
When I watch this I feel like I'm doing online school
AlienAtedElf haha is that good or bad?
