I followed his career from when he first arrived in this country till his untimely death. I saw him many times and person and had the good fortune to meet him personally. To this day no crossover operatic tenor has come close to his voice.
The hair on my arms still stands up every time I hear this. Good God, his performance is shattering. I saw him perform in upstate New York a few years before his death and he was incredible.
Thank you for this great Sergio Franchi performance! Ed Sullivan first heard of Sergio when he heard him sing "Core 'ngrato" on the radio and knew he had to have him on his program. Sergio performed it twice, on a black and white show and a color one. The song was written in 1911 by Salvatore Cardillo and Riccardo Cordiferro. The title translates to "Ungrateful Heart". Enrico Caruso made the song popular and it has the distinction of being the only well-known Neapolitan song written in America. A truly incredible performance by Sergio, and I hope we will also get to see his older performance of the song on the Sullivan show as well, which I think was his first appearance.
The great Sergio Franchi, non better! How I love his voice! I had the great fortune to have met and spent some time with him decades ago (a long story). To this day (2024), I'm still inspired by this great singer and wonderful man.
