Thanks for watching, from all of us at Matt's off-road recovery!
I didn't find the video of the Dyno run on Golen's channel....
So it has way less power than an old stock Chevy v8. Longer, and weighs just as much. Should have just grabbed a 10 year old chevy truck. Get a good tranny and transfer case with it.
@@michaelvangundy226 you’d be surprised how down on power a clapped out engine makes. Easy to say when you’re doing exactly 0% of the work
@@michaelvangundy226 Or he can build a recovery vehicle that works for what he does.
@@michaelvangundy226 a stroked 4.0 is direct fit, headache free. no gremlins or bugs to figure out, no conversion bullshit to deal with, no fabrication, no need for aftermarket engine control or having a wiring rats nest under the hood, etc.
@@michaelvangundy226 Jeep 4.0 engines are legendary for endurance and the low rpm performance necessary for rock crawling. Stroking the engine moved the torque curve further down where you need it while increasing fuel efficiency and horsepower at highway speeds. A V-8 is shorter but it's also wider and makes for a cramped engine bay. It's all about which trade offs you want to make.
Matt, when you talked about using the wrecker to pull the engine out, you should have had Ed say "we'll get it out".
Stock footage edit ha ha
LMAO, that would have been gold, I laughed so hard at this.
😆
With a weather report and stating it's over dirt
@@chuckstith838 Slight precipitation and seepage in the past, extra muddy on the road now.
I'm so glad everyone in the comment section knows so much more about what Matt wants/needs than Matt does. And so many comments from people who didn't even watch the video before commenting, or haven't watched previous vids. You would think Matt is on his first day doing off-road recoveries. Just do what you have been doing, Matt!
61 Rampy And if the truth was to be known, most of these arm chair experts spewing advice don't know jack squat about what any of this stuff.
Most of theses phone holder do is change a tire, if they even know what a tire is. Much less then a lug nut.. 🤣
That is everyone at every job...including him
It's called learning
I think this channel is an insperation.
The old engine needs to be put in a place of honor for all the rescues it's performed. When I was a kid we didn't have an engine hoist either. We just used a block and tackle from the branch of an old oak tree.
Exactly what I'm doing with my ZR2 blazer.
This is really a testimony to the quality of these 4.0 engines. That engine has been revved till it floats over and over as a matter of the normal work environment yet it takes it and comes back for more. They are a real work horse.
We used a pecan tree to hold our chain hoist. It worked for a 350
YUP YUP YUP .. 1 inch Manila rope !!!
We used to strip the engine in the car. Then you could just lift the bare block out.
Matt don't sell yourself short you're not cheap and lazy. You're frugal and you like to work smarter not harder 😉 . All you and your teams Fabrication work that I've seen looks and functions perfectly for everything you guys have built. I'm a little bit of a fabricater myself and I'd love to have half your talent! Keep up the good work I learn something new every time I watch 1 of your videos and it's very much appreciated 👍 stay safe
Not only are y’all gettting more comfortable on camera and you’re editing getting vastly better; you’re getting so much better at engagement with the audience. Like how you’re “stringing us along” with the journey with what we have to look forward to.
Agreed! Matt's opening up a little. What I love most about the channel, besides the ingenuity of their mechanical exploits, is the relationships and camaraderie between all the folks. Just lovely to behold!
Matt the natural lol
Seriously, the BEST engine hoist I’ve seen!!! Fully adjustable, way heavy duty, won’t tip over and doesn’t get hung up on pebbles and cracks in the concrete! Great hoist!!!
Looking forward to watching the stroker at work!!! Golen is supposed to be THE best!
AND, his hoist doubles as a wrecker! 😎
But it lacks the adrenaline rush of wondering if that cheap hoist from Harbor Freight will collapse at the worst moment. :-(
@@guardrailbiter right!😆
Is lizzy your gf?
No! Lizzy’s dad and Matt are lifelong friends. Matt is married!
I love the engine hoist especially because it doubles as a wrecker/tow truck!
For a short time I worked at my friend’s shop where he built custom cars. I did not appreciate the style of the cars, in general, but I loved working there. While I hated the idea of a Mitsubishi Montero that would lay its rocker panels on the ground, I LOVED fabricating the air suspension mountsand figure out the shock mounts and cutting and reinforcing the frame. It’s a real exercise in troubleshooting and creativity and seat of the pant engineering. I feel like I’m reliving it watching these build videos. ❤️
I have a '92 Jeep Cherokee 4wd with a 5 speed manual with the 4.0, it has 408,000 miles on it runs great never been rebuilt.
Me too mine is at 200.000 other then that the same
The bananas engine has heavy miles on it from a gazillion rescues
Yea, I've gottdn well over 200k with all 3 Ive had, or still have
@@rediron44 that's awesome! they are solid
Nearing 320k on mine
"It never drips" Well yeah, all that dirt and sand on the engine acts like oil dry and absorbs the oil before it can hit the ground.
I call BS on that.. I'm a Jeep addict (owned over 14 various Jeeps from 1950 to 2018) and my Cherokees ALWAYS had the factory oil leak... That 4.0 is a Golden Child...
@@blacksheep25251 well it does leak, it just doesn't drip... :)
Seepage can't be denied ,just don't mark it's spot on floor.,🤣👍✌️💪🤙🖖😎😁
WTF pulls a non leaking, running 4.0 out of a jeep??? Lol
A lesson in every episode.
This one: "Leaks" become "seeps" in Jeeps when you keep them dirty enough in all the right places. "Trail broken" to be "driveway trained"?
Matt, I'll buy the T-shirt when you fashion my word salad into something terse and marketable. 🤣🤷🏻♂️
“I don’t have an engine hoist.”
No, you don’t. You have the mother of all engine hoists.
Eric P., thank you...LOL I came to make sure someone pointed that out! Wish I had an engine hoist like that!
It definitely probably wont tip too
self propelled diesel engine hoist
DAM the adjustment bar that hooks in the middle of the engine!! He has a hydro cable for front and another for rear best 1 ever the hell with a engine lift !!
No engine hoist, only a fork truck.
That part where Matt explained the whole process of leveling the steering box mount got my mouth agape. Perfect delivery, minimal pauses, sounded so professional. Like listening to an expert trainer/instructor. You're a natural Matt! Try pressure washering(lol) the old engine, I bet it'll be dripping then (of water lol). Like one of the commenters here mentioned, I will also say Thanks for posting! Y'all made my Sunday awesome. :D
This episode was all about Matt doing what he loves doing the most: hands on fabrication.
You always say, "Thanks for watching", well.. thank you for posting. I watch all of them, that's going to be my line now. "Thanks for posting" count on that
That new radiator makes the jeep look more Jeepy. Awesomeness 🤗
thanks for good and nice video. it's been very enjoy watching when im sitting 2 week with hospital to look those video with my father. He died yesterday. Big thanks the whole team to nice moments to watch videos. and warm hug to everyone. Keep the same nice and warm attitude. Sry my bad english Im from Finland.
the wrecker makes a perfect engine hoist.
I'm surprised how well that worked! I didn't know you had such fine control over it, with two different pulling cables.
Should have removed the bananas hood, would have made it easier.
I was just gonna say that’s the coolest automatic engine hoist I’ve ever seen.
Now we know why you never had a hoist. You have a wrecker.
Anyone who has used both a jack hoist, and a wrecker, to remove an engine knows the wrecker is better. It's just infinitely more expensive if that's all you're going to do with it. It's just most people can only afford the $500 Harbour Freight jack style since they're probably doing exactly one swap in one car for their entire lives. Mechanics that do engine swaps a lot usually have an electric winch on a gantry crane.
If you cake on enough dust any 4.0 will not drip :)
Thats how i keep mine from dripping, i call it my "stop leak" 🤣🤣
That was my thought process, but wasn't sure it was common.
The only place my 4.0 "leaked" was from the oil filter adapter. Then I replaced the seals on the adapter, it was fine.
@@lordTowle mine was the rear of the valve cover gasket. Then the next week the oil filter adapter housing lol. Now it just burns it not leaking it 😂😂😂
@@ericnewberry BTW - That was with 250k miles on it. Those motors last.
STT, you’re bringing back high school memories. First motor I pulled was a VW bug, and I dropped it into my lap. Second was a small block Chevy using a borrowed cherry picker and an engine stand. Good times and fun experience. And I’ve never wanted to do it again since 1977!!
You'd surely give our Belgian mandatory car inspection guys a fatal fit , Matt :-D
Keep at it !
I'm calling it months in advance. Off-road Tow Truck is the new project. Lol
But is it a flatbed?
something like trail mater with 8 winches
2:22 That's why they were testing a Deuce - will it be a good platform for an off-road flatbed.
@@imchris5000 Why stop at 8?

You will have to do MORRVAIR vs. Banana Round 2 - the rematch!
Yes, i want to see that as well.
seems likely, but still everyone upvote, we need to see this when its done!
The banana vs the morrvair vs fj at fabrats
Can we take a little time to appreciate that little gem of inline six-engine that has been hummin' in cars like since the mid sixties, and been mounted in cars that todays kids never ever seen or even heard about?
Emmission regulations has had engineers reworking the engine for decades while new owners and conglomerates has brought in t h e i r team to tweak the engine up to the standard of times.
...and the engine just kept getting better, cleaner and more economical for each decade.
A great engine, and I an happy that MORR appreciates it too and drops a fresh one back in the bay.
I thought this was going to be a "toughen it up a bit" project but you're going all in. I'm excited to see the Banana back in action. And all these mods might call for another Banana v MORRvair competition.
After years of rocky trails and slow crawls I’ve never wanted more power in my XJ. However last month I hit sand dunes for the first time out by Pismo, and with 4 people and a dog in the Jeep I was just powering out trying to get up steep hills. Looking forward to seeing how the stroker does for you, might want to upgrade myself.
Matt does that while pulling a trailer now.
Where can you ride dunes in Pismo? I've heard you can drive out on the beach but I didn't know you could ride anywhere else.
@@kazansky22 Go south on the beach until you reach the newly installed Park Ranger fence. Turn left and you are on what we used to call the Sand Highway which takes you into the dunes.
That's how I felt about my 3.7L 5cyl GMC Canyon. Never felt the need for more power, until I took it to the Silver Lake sand dunes. I can't imagine trying to tow a wrecked SxS up dunes with less than 250 HP.
And now the envirofreaks plan to close Pismo down even after definitive evidence the vehicles are NOT the cause for dust. Enjoy it while you can.
"Believe it or not I don't have an engine hoist" . 30s later comes with a crane :D
I have something BETTER , A CRANE!
They have a forklift, too, but the wrecker gives more control with the independent winch lines.
In the south its an old oak tree and a chain hoist in the front yard. Great job improvising ya'll
"Workin' in the dirt like a common criminal" Oh. OH. I guess I know where _I_ stand.
I'll have you know I not only work in the dirt, I work in the mud, snow, highway median, roadside ditch, and the common parking lot. I've been wrenching all my life and haven't had access to so much as a garage in the last 20 years.
You guys are great! keep up the awesome fun and keep chuckin' the videos up on the 'Tube!

I want to thank you once again. Closed caption is not sucky. Thank you so very much.
I pictured Ed saying it's hot, around 100 degrees, but we'll get the engine out! Thanks for sharing.
Planetary axles, sweet! Cant wait to see what your building. Using the wrecker worked out well, even looks like it worked better than an actual engine hoist.
I love the lack of brand loyalty you have, just get what works
Thats matt-gyvering at its finest ! ! !
that jeep 4.0 is such a reliable bullet proof motor, it does not surprise me that motor block has made it into the stroker rebuild class. What a fantastic motor choice for the BANANA good job MATT
I guess your big project is the old army 6x6 truck....hopefully...greetings from Julio your fan from Argentina
This is easily becoming the best channel on RUclips, can’t wait to see the new project
When I saw the axles, my mind went to HeavyDSparks channel :)
Ever since I learned videos come out every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday I look forward to them so much. These build videos are next level. I still love the recoveries but the builds are my fav for sure. I hope they start something after the banana is done. Rudy’s jeep?

If the engine blows in my 94 Cherokee i know where to get a stroker now. Thanks for all the tips!
"I love it when a plan comes together!" or just wing it! - Matt's strategy for rebuilds ;)
I have that Golen in mine. Noticeable power difference, but she runs even hotter than stock. Cooling upgrades definitely in order.
Garden pump sprayer rigged up to spray/mist the radiator when it runs hot. Or a second windshield washer pump for a tank of water.
It’ll work great in that dry air.
it seems to be obvious to do so , more power is more gross power and since roughly half the power goes to heat ... do the maths
Edit: I need to finish watching the video before commenting. 😀
You should tear down the old engine and see how it looks
I'm glad youtube can assist with your success, you have originality. Off-road towing is different, i appreciate your niche!!!
I love watching the welding........... over & over.
Had an 89 cherokee with the 4.0. Original engine and 5 speed were still working fine at 400,000 miles. No rebuilds.
Sure Goober...and you never changed the oil and it has the original tires too.....BULLSHIT
@@chadhaire1711 It is not unheard of in the Jeep community. If it has been maintained properly and hasn't had the snot ran out of it by some idiot, a 4.0 can very well hit 400k without a rebuild. They are one of those engines that were built good from the factory that last.
No rebuilds does not equal no maintenance. You can believe me or not, don't care.
@@maverick29 I’ve seen 15 comments on here where people said they have 400k on their rigs lol coincidence or bullshit ? Lol

I've been driving 4runners for 20 years. They've served me well and mechanically they seem to be well engineered.
5th gen'er here; they may be an 'ancient' design, but they just keep on running like you're saying.
heck prior to that i had a taco that kept on running even at nearly 220k miles with no issues, but i traded it because it was a very bare bones model and felt like getting some of the new bells and whistles that are available lol
I've owned 5 4runners and they've all been great vehicles.
2010 FJ cruiser, 2013 diesel hilux, and I use to have a 4 runner at one point. most of the parts are swappable between the three with no modifications.
Hey there Lizzie, I do believe that that is the best weather report you've ever given it added to the storyline of you pressure washing, we would not have realized the conditions of your job that you were doing without it

Fogged or not, at least Matt wore some safety glasses, lmao! High fives guys, looking good 👍
I once got metal shavings from head porting in my eyes. Trust me, you do NOT want to work without safety glasses. So happy to see these guys being consistent!
Yep, exactly what I was thinking! Safety glasses are good...loosing an eye = bad.
Bushy Bushy Brown hair dew (orange or red in this case) with Neanderthal eyebrows help to seep and keep moisture in. Of course I'm guessing the AC must be pretty good to help with the condensation from a hot worker.
Yep! Got to take care of those baby blues baby browns or whatever. You only get one pair! Safety glasses are great insurance. Not foolproof though!
I've used my wrecker a few times for this, wreckers are really nice for pulling motors out of boats
As a young teenager driving my 46 Willys with a completely worn out steering box and a half a wheel play with a challenge to keep straight driving down the road a friend recommended the Chevy box which has the bump on the side and nothing is flat and replace that got everything hooked up drove it down the driveway and realized that I had put or not put the Pitman arm so you would turn to the left and rotate to the right my brother came home and I let him drive I drove it around the block just once backwards very entertaining time in my life learning about mechanics and what works and doesn’t work I enjoy watching you deal with issues of Offroad it was very difficult and challenging on a vehicle.
I learned a long time ago if you want to race car, bike off-road vehicle you got to work on them to keep them in top condition
677 thousand subscribers outstanding Matt and crew and Lizzy as well your wife and kids too and camera crew too 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Catalytic converter thieves!! Haha! I'm from Washington, so that was really funny to me!
I was driving through Reno NV and saw a scrap yard with a 'We Buy Catalytic Convertors' sign. If the scrap yards would have some integrity, require ID, and make payments electronically, it would likely lessen the amount of thefts.
The straight 6 in those Cherokee's were damn near indestructible!
260k miles, most of them off road in the worst possible conditions you can imagine. Rain, mud, snow, ice, you name it, the Banana has seen it all!
I grew up in the country, a good strong tree makes a good engine hoist.
Also, do you or anyone in the shop have and welding certification, or are you self smarted?
(If you get the self smarted line we can be friends)
Hi Matt, Greetings from the Philippines! You’re channel is a trove of practical knowledge. You’re a nice person and a great dad. To me, you embody the great American worker -honest, driven, always the go-and-get-it-done type.
If I had a wrecker I would not need an engine hoist. 4.0 L Jeep engine and drive line was such a success. I have had a few over the years and they were reliable well beyond the sheet metal in NE. The burble of the 6 is distinctive. Long live Banana.
Trevor's song references get the strangest expressions from the crew. I think we need a compilation.
I love this channel, what a great set of family and friends
I’m really glad you didn’t get rid of the Jeep. I’ve owned Jeep’s my whole life and I’m 60 I also worked for Jeep dealerships for 20 years.

Awesome 👌 The banana is getting an upgrade!
I’m hoping those MRAP axles are for the winch truck, because your gonna make it 4 wheel drive
Eventually, they should make a military humvee apart of the fleet.
Didn't he say in that video with that 6x6 truck he was going to make a 4wd version of the wrecker?
That's gotta be it, making the winch truck 4x4
@@anaikgill2937 I thought I heard them say a bus..........
There was talk of widening one of those corvair pickups to turn it into a wrecker. That’s where I think those axles are going.
Love these garage bits just as much as the recoveries!
To help keep your safety glasses from fogging up I suggest you turn your hat around. I am like you and can't go anywhere with out my hat! I have learned to turn my hat backwards to keep my glasses from fogging up as they brim holds the moisture in.
Look at the arms on Rudy! Has he been working out? In general.... Your channel is so much fun! It is my favorite! I look for a new video every day, and I watch a lot of the old ones over and over too. Can't get enough of you guys!
Everyone here works so hard. Unreal.
Plate the outside of the driver "frame rail" and mount the steering box on studs. Easy on and off, and no through bolt to line up.
Who needs a hoist when a tow truck is around! That's way better than a hoist! That new 4.6 is going to be awesome! Y'alls videos are better than any TV shows.
The "walking after midnight" part at 15:11......hilarious! That's one for the "best of" file.
We ole farts really enjoy your videos Matt and family. To tell the truth we are jealous of your knowledge and skills because we couldn't even fix a flat tyre.
Obviously no "engineering certification" requirements in Utah, any modification to chassis or even engine upgrade have to be "engineered" at some great cost here in Australia. I like it the way you guys do it, if it looks right it is right... Rock on MORR!
Does that include bolt on parts? Fucking Australia man. Its like the best and the worst place in the world to live lol. Canada has a lot of that too.

I suspect a 5 ton big military type truck will be in the future of Matt's Off-Road Recovery?
He's gotta compete with Casey's off road recovery. You say how hard it was to pull out that camper rv.
With a full suspension rebuild
He did have that massive truck a couple months ago with the video called "did we find are next vehicle" or similar. So yeah, hope to see this. I mean what else would he put those massive axles in? A bit big for a rock bouncer, and way to big for another small truck like the jeep.
We did get a preview
2:22 Those are the axels for it!
Matt's shop projects are at least as interesting as the recoveries, though the landscape shots of their trips are pretty good.
Thanks Matt, I am remember my first engine swap, I pulled the engine and transaxel out of my 61 Corvair and put it into a 64 I found in a field in S MN. Did it in a farmers yard using a bucket loader. Great fun for a 16 year old Kid.
The Best videos are Matt and Rudy building a Freakin Awesome Rig together. There’s nothing Better than Father and Son!!! All that’s missing is Rudy’s brothers so they can learn the trade!
i built the stroker in my jeep, cant wait to see this in action!!!
Hopefully it's an off road rollback! That is high on my list of things to build!
Theses Sunday project videos are the best!!

Thank you Matt looks totally explaining the bumpster and which arm should be level. I watch a lot of other channels maybe wasn't paying full attention but you did it slow enough and full vision explaining thank you
That looked so easy pulling the engine with the wrecker!!
Wow, that 4.6 stroker has HEAPS more power than the original 4.0! Here's hoping it's just as reliable!
It's not
@@ironicchannelname6457 The bar is pretty high, but if built correctly, I don't see reliability being an issue. We have a lot better design and manufacturing technology/techniques today than they did when the 4.0 was originally designed and manufactured way back in the 80's. Time will tell, I guess.
@@Kcducttaper1 strokers have increased rod angles and it put more stress on the bearings they require rebuilds more often
@@ironicchannelname6457 That may be true. On the flip side, we can make the tolerances between the bearing/journal tighter and smoother. Modern synthetic oils are also significantly better than the 'dino' fluids. Hard to say for sure either way, but I hope it lasts a long time for them!
