Broadway Backwards is the annual celebration where men sing songs originally written for women and vice versa. In doing so, gay and lesbian stories are told through the great songs of musical theatre and sung by our favorite Broadway performers. Broadway Backwards began as a grassroots concert performed at the Center in 2006. The event quickly grew and now is performed every year in a Broadway theatre. Since 2010, the evening has been produced by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and benefits BC/EFA and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York.
The 2021 virtual edition of Broadway Backwards provided an emotional and exuberant evening of musical theater performances as it explored how an isolated New Yorker faced the toll of the COVID-19 pandemic and ultimately found hope.
The unprecedented stream, which included new performances blended with favorite onstage numbers from the past, raised a record $749,555 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center in New York City. The total surpasses the previous record of $704,491, raised in 2019 at the last in-person version of Broadway Backwards.

Hands down best performance of this showstopper I have ever seen. He lived every known human emotion in six and a half minutes, and made us feel all of them too.
All I can say is this: Titus Burgess has superhuman talent.
That was a masterclass! The raw emotions of being pregnant, betrayed, longing, and hopeful poured out. The little things like building up the song, holding his stomach and his hands shaking. Bravo!
The acting choices make this feel SOOO personal. I do miss that final gasp from JH, but getting up from the floor earlier was chef's kiss.

Oh my gosh, I am emotionally shattered every time I watch this video. Titus knocks this out of the park so well. I mean ugly crying, lump in my throat, have to repeatedly blow my nose, think about it the rest of the day.... shattered. Well done, Titus - you cover Jennifer Holliday's signature song as well as I have ever heard or seen.

The song is from the musical 'Dreamgirls'. The protagonist, Effie White (played here by the epic Titus Burgess) is singing to her husband - who is also the manager of the act, if I'm remembering my story correctly. Titus does a remarkable job here.
