Good morning Erica, I really enjoy making these, have made several for gifts and it is always one of those things that you give and the receiver has loved them always saying how useful it is. A little tip, I use walnut shells in alot of my crafting and to avoid the shells from possibly getting under the needle...eek..I put a small strip of batting or small piece of stuffing to close them in then sew. Outcome is no frustrating shells in the throat plate.

Thank you for sharing. Like the stiffener you used to hold it open. Made one similar and used bird grit (pet supplies) for the filler. Added a plastic food container to hold threads and such. Makes it much easier to empty. Depending on size needed to fit inside the bag, insert a Solo plastic party cup style plastic container. Maybe a cut down fruit juice container. Mine fit a quart sized round container that originally held brunswick stew from a church fundraiser.
I had so much fun making this thread catcher bag, just one thing in pattern supplies, just make sure to add one lining fusible and one fabric for fusible fleece. Very cute when completed. Thank you

Thanks Erica for a fun project ... made one for my sewing table and made a 2nd one that I swapped out glass gems instead of walnut shells for added weight to hold my rotary cutter and scissors at my cutting table.

Hi Erica, I know this video is 5 years old, so you may not read this comment , but, I just made this thread catcher/pin cushion, and mine keeps slipping off my table. I have a suggestion where you sew a piece of rubber shelf liner to the bottom of the pin cushion so it doesn’t slip. Otherwise, it’s perfect and I love it. You are a very good teacher.
Outside fabric I changed it to 3.5x10 not 6.....turned out really good, ty for video, I have also followed your sewing machine mat, thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
When I've made these I only sew each long side of the strap. This way I don't have to worry about pointy corners that nobody is going to see. Love your videos.

Erica , you have got to expand out on how to fold the end of the bag with the turning opening in it with a few more shots of how you are able to get the fabric placed to form the diamond. It took me 2 hours of flipping and twisting before I finally got that end in the position you need to make the corners!!!!! and I am mechanically inclined too !!!!!! if there were just a few more shots showing slowly how to shape that end of the bag tube , it would have been very helpful. The other end I had no trouble shaping into a box for the outer fabric.
Hi, I'm sorry that was confusing. It's called boxing the bottoms and I do it on all of my bag projects, so I may have done it faster on this one. Sorry!
I love that this is one of those projects that has a big "reveal" at the end, but no clue on how you did the boxing as the video did not show how you achieved the flat diamond shape (PDF doesn't have that process either). I went old school and boxed my corners by cutting out ac square. I really enjoyed making it, thank you

Amalia Lopes My quilting store made a bunch of these and put a piece of plastic inside to keep the pins from going through and possibly scratching your furniture. They also put something rubbery on the outside bottom to make it so it didn’t move. I think stripes of hot glue would work. They used boning for the top of the bag. I’ve saved some of the flat strapping from boxes that I will use. I can’t wait to make one of these with a matching sewing machine mat.

But it’s longer in your video than the pillow is wide. And your instructions would make that 3 inches. And width of pillow is 4.5. I think your measurement is incorrect.
I am making this thread catcher and the dimension for the strap in the description seems to be wrong. When I look at yours compared to the pillow, they look to be the same length. I’ve recut mine to 3.5” x 9.5”. I adjusted the fusible fleece too.
Hi Erica, lovely project but noticed from your video that the size of your strap was bigger. I have ended up with a small square 3inches by 3 and half inches. I stared with a piece of fabric 3 .5 x 6 inches as your instructions next to your video. please could you say if I have made a mistake. many thanks

Hi Erica. Thank you for a great video. I have been sewing along with you, having previously downloaded the pattern and cut out all the pieces. Unfortunately, your measurements in the pattern don't seem to match your video - the strap is much shorter in the downloaded pattern. I will continue with what I have cut out but wondered if you were aware of this?
Love it! Have a question on the length of the strap...I’m watching the video as I’m assembling it. My strap is WAY shorter than what yours looks like. At 2:09 I paused the video to notice the length of your strap is the same length as the length of your pillow. So just double checking because my strap has turned out a little ‘stumpy’ - is this correct?
Linda Holder nothin yet - but I remade the strap same length as the pillow and honestly the size she’s listed in the instructions works as well. The longer strap that I credited hangs the ‘bag’ a little longer off the table than I’d like. But either way, I still love the outcome. Will definitely make more with some of my own modifications. It’s inspired me 👍🏼
So now I’ve made two, one with the strap cut at 10” (or at least what it looks like on the video) & a second with the strap as written in the instructions at 6”...either way you can’t go wrong! Just depends on your personal preference on how far you want it to hang. The only thing I’ve done differently is sewn most of the pillow’s final seam, filled with shells, then finish that last edge. I must fill it too full because I just can’t get the shells to move around enough to finish the last two sides...just not enough room. So I’ve made it how it works for me - just love the end result! Thanks again for the pattern and instructions!!
The strap is correct on the pattern, I made mine a little too long, so I adjusted it on the pattern. When you fold it in half it should only be 3" long.

That’s what I’m saying...it’s walnut shells....ground...in kitty litter. I didn’t realize that....but they’re the same thing.....crushed walnut shells ARE what kitty litter is made of.....ask in a pet store. They sharpen pins/needles
Love this video except I think you accidentally wrote the strap measurements in the pattern incorrect. Mine can out so small then I saw in your video when you laid the strap by the pillow it was the same length so I remade it. Thanks!
Ok, thanks! Mine came out great! The only thing I did differently was I added a small square of rubbery shelf liner to the back of the pin cushion so it wouldn’t slide on the table top. Thanks for the tutorial!
My cut pieces do not come out the size you show. Is 3.5" cut as 3 1/2? I don't know how to read 3.5. I'm just a beginner and these instructions are so frustrating I give up.

Great video! Clear fusible vinyl on the lining piece will keep threads from "sticking" and make it much easier to empty.

I like to use ripstop nylon as the lining fabric because threads fall right out and it is cheaper than PUL. Great video👍

What I did, I did a top stitch on the inside to catch the webbing before I sewed it closed. No need for pins then.

A friend suggested going to the pet supply store for walnut shells. Much cheaper. They use them for reptile cages
YES! That's a great place to get them!
You can use extra fine steel wool or emery sand and it will keep you pins sharp.

I LOVE my Juki TL2000Qi, it's been the best workhorse! Brother has some decent quilting machines and so does Bernina and BabyLock.

I agree. The strap in the video appears to be 9” long not 6. I froze the frame and looked at the mat measurement

Hi, Yes I altered the pattern after the video because I felt the strap was too long. I suggest going by what is in the written PDF download :)

Yes, it is similar but a bit pointier! I used my bone folder before I got this one!

Does the weight of the walnut shells stop it from slipping off the table?
Yes, the walnut shells are nice and weighty! Pillow stuffing doesn't hold the weight as well so I would not use that for this project.

The instructions say the material size for the strap is 3 1/2 x 6. But it looks like it’s at least 10 inches long in the video according to your mat
Follow the PDF instructions, I updated the strap to be a better length.
My cut pieces do not come out the size you show. Is 3.5" cut as 3 1/2? I don't know how to read 3.5. I'm just a beginner and these instructions are so frustrating I give up.
