- Ultimate Muscle was one of those shows that has been stuck in my memories since the day I first laid my eyes on it. From the show to the Ultimate Muscle manga, Ultimate Muscle holds a very interesting and long lasting legacy thanks to it being a part of the Kinnikuman series from Japan as only this sequel series was brought to the states and then fully named Ultimate Muscle. Let's check out the history of this show, why the legacy is so interesting and what the show in general was all about.

Thanks so much for watching! Do you have any memories of watching Ultimate Muscle on the Fox Box?
YES!!! Im so ready for this!! Thank you so much mate!! I cant wait for you to cover more foxbox! This and Kirby was for sure up there on my list!!
As an Ireland kid, I could only watch it on the channel Kix.
No i do not remember because my friends and family never told me about it and i did not watch it

The fact that Samoa Joe (ex WWE current AEW) wrestler got his finisher from this show just shows that it had a legacy in the US.
Oh I gotta see this.
@@AKUNJIG It's just the Muscle Buster, would have been insane seeing an IRL take on the Muscle Millenium though.
@@HenshinFanaticEl Hijo Del Vikingo might be able to pull off the Muscle Millennium

Kodo Fuyuki was the first to do it and he called it the kinniku buster.
Funny note: Ultimate Muscle got Mega Popular in the US 🇺🇸! Whats weird was Japan hated it, only because of Kid Muscle( he was viewed the Gohan during Resurrection F) so we even got episodes released exclusively for states that would later air in japan! The dub was hilarious, having Joey/ Mikey as Jaegar and even Team Rocket James as a referee!❤😂
Have they show cased the old show on Cartoon Network called “Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo” ?
@@Chillcat584 I don't think so yet...nor has he talked about Rave Master, Mon Colle Knights, Fighting Foodoms, Maar, or Monster Rancher.
@@LowellLucasJr. the only one I grew up knowing about on your list is monster rancher. I just started tryna revisit it.
That also quite happend with Sonic X. The Metarex Saga (Season 3) would air in Thailand, France and the U.S before Japan would air it.
they hated it? awe man i love it even the localization all the characters
Honestly, this was one of the only properties where the sillier aspects of 4Kids dubs actually worked with the tone of the show. The Kinnikuman franchise has always been silly and 4Kids might have even improved things. Eric Stewart as one half of the announce team was GOLD.
hell no dude
Dik Dik van Dick is a way better name than Gazelleman
@@Querymonger Even the original creators have said they wished they'd come up with it.
It also had one of the greatest theme songs of all time 😂

This show changed my brain chemistry forever. My sense of humour is permanently locked at this level.
wow
With my rice I like to have some cow, cow, cow
The puns...soo many puns..
I still remember the EPIC theme song. It may be horribly localized for an American audiences, but this insane dub was a core memory of my childhood ❤
I love it as a kid
I was obsessed with this show as a kid; one of my go-to Saturday morning watches. The humor made me laugh, the action kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat, the character drama (which I'm sure wouldn't be considered THAT deep if I saw it today) intrigued me. It was good stuff. I had an action figure from the show of a character that only ever appeared in I wanna say the last couple episodes of the show, and didn't do anything when he showed up, but that was THE toy for me back then. I gave him a different backstory and powerset, and he was the main character of the adventure series I played with all my other action figures that plagiarized every shonen anime that was on TV at the time. It was great lmao
I remember Kit and co hurt BAD in later episodes. It could be REALLY tense when it want it to be. God I miss these shows
Me tooo
This one grew on me over time and honestly that theme song was catchy af. Fighting Foodon had a fun theme too lol.
I mean fighting food on is literally them singing over a classic song so they were halfway there already.
HOLY SHIT I FORGOT ABOUT THIS!
Jordan you've unlocked something deep inside of me again...
i felt the same about a year ago. one of my favorite youtubers and his friend did lets plays all the time. often bringing up jojo or kinnikuman. and like sure jojo is jojo but i was left blank on kinnikuman. for years they brought it up and i was just confused because it sounded so familiar but i couldn't place me finger on it. then one day they brought up Terry Bull and it was like years of my childhood just unlocked in a second.
There also was a chance for the series to continue but many things stopped that idea dead.
The arcs that come after this, the "Demon Seed" and "Ultimate Tag" arc respectively, were *EXTREMELY VIOLENT.* Like I'm talking disturbingly brutal at a lot of points. *Characters straight up die horribly or get horrific injuries.*
Ah, so it keeps to the tradition of it's previous series too, huh? Early lighthearted antics before we get to the surprisingly brutal stuff later.
Who dies?
Then there's what happens with Wally.
@@HenshinFanatic and yudetamago retconned all of it with the nisei remake that introduced choujin divas back to the series.
Now there is both a Anime remake alongside the newly finished manga run.
If anything they will give Suguru to Sugita
@@dranzerjetli5126 In the Demon Seed arc alone there's several deaths: Kevin Mask, Escara, Hanzo, Barrierfreeman and Comrade Turbinski all die, as well as 5 of the 6 Demon Seed.
That being said, it doesn't really matter because they get revived at the end of the arc (except for the bad guys, those remain dead)
I will always remember one fight Kid had with a Traffic Light fighter. That lives rent-free in my head.
Road Rage, ha ha. Don't forget the toilet guy
Yeah and they would cram as many puns as possible into every line.
Kinnikuman is pretty much ingrained into the Japanese culture at this point, similarly to Doraemon, Anpanman and so on.
The last time I visited Japan which was quite recent, I also saw Kinnikuman characters adorned the walls of the train station I got off, as well as character decorated coin lockers here and there, it’s pretty cool.
It’s also often parodied by other manga/anime, mostly for its iconic Kinniku Buster finishing move (in Gintama for example).

I absolutely adored this show! My mom thought the characters looked gross, but I always thought they were all super cool. I don't remember too much about the show, but I remember/loved the fight between Muscle & Maximilian. I think it was the one where the love interest finally fell in love with Muscle
My brother had a bunch of the MUSCLE toys when we were kids. Didn't know there was so much more to it, until the Ultimate Muscle show came along. My brother and used to watch it all the time.

It was and still is the funniest dubbed show I ever watched.
Ghost Stories and Golden Boy are up there too
@@wafflebrozghost stories dubbed has the funniest pop culture references
In addition to what the other replies have mentioned, I would like to add the dub of Bobobo-Bo Bo-Bobo
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and Yu Yu Hakusho are other animes I would like to include in "the dub was better" category.
Crayon Shin Chan and Sgt Frog also had a funny dub with tons of 2000s American pop culture references just like Ghost Stories... But those two shows also have a worse, more literally translated dubbed, so watch out
I swear this guy scratches that 90's nostalgia every week. Keep doing what you're doing dude!!
I'm Irish and I remembered watching Ultimate Muscle on the TV channel Kix when I was a kid, one time I was watching the show in the living room while my mum was forcing an ice pack on my head (because I got a bump on my head during the time lol). Either way, this show was awesome when I was a kid and still awesome to this day. :D
same here
Kix is a throwback

I watched it on that channel as well.
I remember watching this as a kid and thinking it had to be a sequel. Glad to see I was right after all.
Ultimate Muscle was a cherished childhood show for me along with Kirby and Yu-gi-oh. My mom liked the show, because of how child friendly the show was; I eventually moved over to watching WWE and TNA. I wouldn't have gotten into wrestling without this show on Saturday mornings. The videogames were fun and imagining superpower special moves as finishers for wrestling is bad ass. If you are ever interested, I grew up with the Galactic Wrestling Federation Game based on the Ultimate Muscle Franchise on PS2. Great game to play! I'm so happy to see this show get some light!
Awh man, this brings back memories. I found Ultimate Muscle: Legends Vs New Generation on sale for GameCube and bought it despite never having heard of it. Ended up being one of my favorite games.
This was my jam before the wrestling show aired. Isn't it amazing that when you watch the intro, the artist can make a goofy face like Kid Muscle seems so cool when he's serious. They really put effort in the art and it's amazing how they pulled it off.
I was a kid in the '80s and the M.U.S.C.L.E men toys were really popular even without a cartoon or comic in the states. Enough kids had them that you could trade them at school, and there were lots of generic knock-offs that they sold in quarter machines all over the city. I'd garner that it if you counted all the different knockoff types, there have to be at least a thousand different figures.
This was a show I remember watching as a 14-15yr old in high school and loving it. Appreciate this vid on an unsung hero of that era for television.
This was my favorite show!!!! Till this day i hate myself for not watching the final episode!!!!! 😢 they need to bring this back!!!!
I've actually gotten into Kinnikuman in recent years. I'm caught up with the OG manga and am currently reading through Nisei/Ultimate Muscle. Looking forward to the new anime, and I hope it gets a good dub.
Dude, I watched this show with a PASSION! It was among my favorite saturday morning cartoons. Back then, I was hella into WWE, so this sparked my interest automatically damn near every clip that was shown I recognized as well as the characters. I hope that it does make a comeback, and Funimation or Toei doesn't ruin the experience.
Toei cannot make a Kinnikuman anime anymore. It is production IG’s turn to make a Kinnikuman anime because of how good Kinnikuman’s current art style has become.
You unlock to dormant memories for me with this video. One with Ultimate Muscle, because I completely thought it was a fever dream. And number two was fighting foodons! I have tried to remember the name of that show for almost fifteen years
I hope the new anime can help Kinnikuman become popular in the west.
I can already imagine Twitter being full of "out of context" scenes due to how bizarre it can get at times.
Love these classics. When tv really tried to get you entertained for hours.
i recently read both series just out of curiosity and I was happy to do so. it was very different from the anime I watched, there is more blood and the attacks feel more brutal. Also, the original series gave me a big surprise how the series developed into what it eventually became.
This show was so good I remember waking up every Saturday morning just to watch it along with Kirby. My brother even had the GameCube game.
Jordan thank you for this video. Im right of the perfect age to have been a kid during the 90's wrestling boom and thus became one of my guilty pleasure Saturday morning shows. Played the PS2 game a whole lot too
Every so often, I still find myself singing that theme song to myself.
I also remember those old M.U.S.C.L.E. toys I got by the bucket as a kid. I loved those things!
I remember this show so much. It was so enjoyable while being funny at the same time.
This show was my childhood, bro! Thanks for covering it, Jordan and when new season of the OG Kinnikuman comes out to celebrate that show's 40th anniversary, it better take place after Ultimate Muscle and show Kid and Roxanne getting married and having their own kid, possibly, Kid Muscle Jr.? That'd be cool to see and since Discotek Media picked up the license and along with the home video rights to the series, and they've officially released the full English dubbed series to the public finally, fans can relive the glory in all 77 episodes of the series before the new season comes out early next year! And they better bring Marc Thompson and the other 4Kids English voice actors,; 'cause they were what made all of these shows from the early 200s! And it just wouldn't be the same without them! I hope they do that, please!
Discotek has rescued the Ultimate Muscle Show and is introducing it to new generations. Thankfully, its parent franchise is turning 45 and we’ll celebrate like it’s no tomorrow!
As a wrestling fan ultimate muscle brought me joy as a kid. It’s just as hype as ever.
Love this anime show ever since I was a kid. Has great humor, actions everything you can ask for.
What a blast from the past! I loved Ultimate Muscle!
Jordan, I want you to know that this show is constantly on the back of my mind, yet I couldn't remember it's name. Thank you for saving me from this hell. My mind is finally at peace
Damn this video discussion really takes me back to the Saturday mornings during & after my high school years of watching this anime. Loved this anime & still do!
YYYEEEESS! Been hoping you'd cover this show. I loved wrestling as a kid, so seeing a cartoon/anime focused around superhero like wrestlers was the perfect mix for me. I had all the games, a lot of action figures, and recently put a lot of these wrestlers in a wrestling game. Definitely looking forward to watching this when I get home. 😁
My mother and I occasionally still sing the rice song at each other. This was our jam
I also never liked wrestling myself, but damn did I love Mucha Lucha and Ultimate Muscle as a kid.
The Fox Box certainly had an amazing cartoon lineup back in the day. This show was a lot of fun and definitely one of my favorites. Please do Funky cops someday in the future!
Imagine if we get a reboot anime for _Ultimate Muscle/Kinnikuman_ and if it gets an English dub I hope some of the of the English voice actors would return it would be just like the 2021 _Shaman King_ series all over again.
EDIT: I just realized that 6 months ago and in this video we would be getting a new _Kinnikuman_ anime in honor of the 40th anniversary of the manga.
I'm worried crunchyroll (likely to nab it) won't use some old 4kids actors :(
Kyle Hebert says he would like to play Kinnikuman, and I'd honestly really like to see that too.
@@bluebaron6858 not to mention that some of the 4Kids voice actors have retired or have passed away.

I never watched the show, but had an almost complete set of the lil toys. Seemed like a hundred of em.
For years I had flashes about this show that I thought were better attributed to a fever dream. Dunno what finally made me look into it but a couple years back I finally did, and man that theme song brought everything back. Over a decade of not thinking about it and all it took for the memories to come flooding in was hearing "Big bad boys from outer space... ULT-I-MATE MUSC-LE."
"Came to body slam the human race! "Ulti-mate, Musc-le!"
Its true its damn true
As a kid, I had a bootleg NES cartridge with 72 games on it, one of which, titled simply "Wrestle" in the menu, was actually a very early game based on this manga. It was one of the more fun games on the disk, with a bunch of different wrestlers to choose from, each having some kind of "special move". It was very simplistic and extremely weird and goofy with no context, but it was fun and I probably played hours of it never knowing what it was based on. I also remember having one or two of those weird rubber figures as a kid too. Thanks for adding context to a little bit of my childhood :D
I never watched an anime about wrestling, but this was the exception I made and I really got into it in the past, because it had comedy, action and more. Recently I found out that the japanese serie was called Kinnikuman (confirmed and explained by this video) and it had 100+ episodes, movies, spin-offs and so on...even an ecchi version where King (or Kid, I don't remember which one) was a woman!
Kevin Mask was my favourite one, so cool.
It is kinnikuman. And yeah Kevin mask was the roman reigns of this show
Great video, Man! I have lots of fond memories watching Ultimate Muscle with my friends as we waited to watch Kirby Right Back at Ya and Sonic X. It was like FoxBox's version of Yu Yu Hakusho and Dragonball Z to us. On a side note I'd love for you to do a Remember Video of Case Closed (aka Detective Conan in Japan). That show was my favorite show on Adult Swim and I felt like it didn't get the credit it deserved. Just an idea for a future video I'd love to see.
It has over 1000 episodes now
I remember going to toys r us and getting a cardboard "fox box," with a DVD with promotions including this. I kind of wish i was older to commit to the series so this is the perfect call back😅
What i find interesting is that last year i discovered through another youtube video that this was a sequel to another series and during the show they had many references, but without context it went through our heads like thin air
Like watching dragon ball z without knowing it had a story about goku when he was a kid
YES. That show got me to try meat with rice. I loved waking up every Saturday morning to watch this classic. I still vaguely recall Checkmate and how traumatizing his loss was. Or the ridiculous names, moves, and stories of the characters. I dunno if it still holds up to my tastes now, but it will always have a place in heart with other Saturday morning cartoons (like Viewtiful Joe)!
I loved the Viewtiful Joe show. I need to find it to watch it again
@@wafflebrozthat show brings back memories😅
It might hold up better if you are anything like me. I missed a lot of the jokes back when it aired and a lot of them did not hold back. Viewtiful Joe was good too but I preferred the games. I still need to go back and unlock all of the characters. Beating the game as Sexy Sylvia was something I gave up on after a while.
How does it taste so very good? I don't know how how how.
this show deserved a longer video :( it was really fun i love this channel
Kinnikuman was one great Cartoon, very successful in Asia and even in Brazil, Only North American friends not widely heard of that.

I have never heard of the series outside of the original Muscle toys, but as someone who likes anime/manga and is a big fan of both American and Japanese pro wrestling I’m definitely going to check it out!
this brought about a wave of nostalga i did not know was possible as when it came out here it was pretty much just shapes and colors to me
Ultimate Muscle is an English dub version of the sequel series to the original Kinnikuman. But they pretty much make it similar to to how pro wrestling is shown over here in the states and add many elements from the WWE into it it felt like.
Well Kinnikuman nisei is a moody high school alternate universe sequel. Kinnikuman’s 2011-onwards soft reboot is the hotter and sexier canonical sequel, which will get an anime adaptation in 2024.
@@SlapstickGenius23 I only seen Ultimate Muscle and not the original but I have seen the original Kinnikuman just not all the way through but I like what I saw of it here on RUclips.
Ultimate Muscle was awesome! It was a blast to watch! If you enjoyed it as a kid I highly, HIGHLY, recommend you watch 'Tiger Mask W'! Also set in the world of pro-wrestling but without superpowered aliens in the mix.
And with actual professional wrestlers.
And don’t get me started on fighting foodons, I sing the theme under my breathe when I’m cooking at home, not to mention I cannot day forget about it normally anymore. It always comes out as Spaghettaboutit. Whenever I make rice, you guessed it, you hear “fried ricer!” Echoing in my kitchen.
Yes, I absolutely remember Ultimate Muscle. I recently got the Blu-Ray collection and it holds up pretty well. The animation could have used a better budget but it was a fun show with decent action and bizarre humor.
Edit. The opening theme is phenomenal too. It will be stuck in your head forever once you hear it.
8:44 - Fun aside, the Sonic X version of Eggman, the first take on the character Pollock voiced, had a prolonged stint as a lunchador in the pro wrestling scene in the Archie comics. He called himself “El Gran Gordo” thinking it translated to “the great big guy” instead of what it actually meant. He even threw down with Sonic in the ring mostly legit and lasted longer against him than any of his robots… which includes E-100 The Eggsterminator, the giant mecha powered by the Chaos Emeralds that spent a whole episode beating up Sonic uncontested until he got the emeralds for himself and went super.
Hi, I'm from México, this show was one of the most bizarre ones I've watched as a kid, but the OG one... damn it can be R@cist at some times.
I love this series with pasion and I feel really upset that almost nobody knows about it.
I'll probably get some flack for this from some people but I think the context of Kinnikuman shows it isn't racist, at least not in the classic meaning of the word. Racism is defined as viewing other races as inferior or hatred of races other than one's own. Unless I missed something, I don't think the show and manga did anything like that. They just went for goofy, over-the-top character designs for everyone of every ethnicity and nationality. Are they caricatures and stereotypes? Yes, but it is only recently that people have decided that stereotypes and caricatures are inherently bad or racist*. Usually, the very same people with that position love Overwatch despite most of the characters being stereotypes.
*I'll absolutely agree that stereotypes and caricatures can be used in a racist way. I just disagree that they are inherently bad or racist.

I'm just glad kid me never sold the gamecube disc of the Ultimate Muscle game - I played it allot and it's one of the wackiest fun titles I remember growing up with. Like you could create your own ultimate muscles character to mess around with in-game and it was fairly robust if memory served.
in the back of my mind i recall bits of this show mostly the German wrestler who's mentor was let us just say was controversial from the original show i remember most of the arc that involved them wrestling to keep their jobs
I loved Ultimate Muscle when i was a teen and have learnt a few interesting facts in my adulthood when revisiting the series, first off... in the manga Kevin Mask defeats Kid Muscle in the final match of the Choujin Championship while the anime reverses the result, and secondly; the Ultimate Muscle didn't do so well it viewership ratings in Japan but thrived in western audiences; in a sense 4kids and the west saved this particular anime from being cancelled.
Thank you Jordan Fringe! This was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoon shows! Great job!
As goofy as the dub was, it still had a catchy theme song.
Shout out to Dik Dik Van Dik, the only thing about this show that I've consistently been able to remember all these years later 😂
OMFG! I was thinking about this show and I could not for the life of me figure out were this vague donut mouth character was from. Thank you, for helping but my mind at ease.
I loved ultimate muscle as a show i am also a huge wrestling fan really wish it came back
I picked up some of the Ultimate Muscle figures when they came out. I still have a couple of them. But I was enamored with the first generation of figures.
I only ever heard of this series due to the gba game i owned....it was quite a fun game! the special moves felt satisfying to pull off
I always had a faint memory of this anime from a commercial. I just typed "ultimate anime" and there it is.
I vaguely remember this show and it was extraordinarily odd. Wrestling wasn't my cup of tea, but it was my friend's younger brother's thing.
I remember one Saturday (2/1/2003) he was watching it in the living room and Kid Muscle jumped up into the air above the ring for an attack, when the Fox affiliate decided to cut in with footage of the Columbia Space Shuttle burning up on re-entry. My friend's brother was like "I've seen this episode before, what the heck!?" It took a few seconds before the voice over from fox announced what was going on... that's the most memorable thing that I remember from the show.
I’m sure other old ppl like me. Remember first seeing the little rubber guys(like army men, but smaller), then a cartoon in Japan. I remember this as well. Love the channel
Wow, you own the Ultimate Muscle manga too? Those volumes are super out of print and expensive! Good thing I bought all of them when they were brand new and the later volumes when they were still in stock. lol
I felt like Foxbox was a Mandela effect because nobody remembers this
This show has so many innuendos that went over my head as a kid, it's constant too.
I remember the show vividly since I was a huge fan
that later arc about Kid having to come up with his own move rather than being dependant on the backbreaker was kino
“UL..TI…MATE… MUSCLE!!!!”
Loved the intro song for this show when I was a kid 👍🏽
My mom use to go to thrift shopping a lot and our local Salvation Army would give away new toys from this show for awhile with purchases. So this show while I’ve never seen it has been burnt into my mind with a lot of nostalgia
Kid's song about rice and beef lives rent free in my head to this day
Ultimate muscle: Legends VS. New generation was one of my favorite games as a kid.
I rented it all the time from Hollywood video and even try to replicate the moves with a big stuffed Spider-man toy.
I accidentally broke my bed when I did and got in a lot of trouble for it.
This show was golden 🔥
This was locked somewhere in the back of my brain. Seeing the walrus brought joy, those memories flared up.
was convinced I was the only guy in England to watch this til I got to 18 and had a full on conversation in the pub with some random guy about this show
Yeah, I used to watch this show in Spanish, and it was the coolest action shows I loved to watch as a kid.

I watched the show, bought some toys and even played the hell out of the Gamecube game! I really need to start reading the manga.
I've already got the complete Ultimate Muscle Series Blu-ray a few days ago and I am very happy because now I can enjoy watching the episodes on my big TV screen. Even thought that I am happy to get this anime series at last I'm hoping that some of my past anime series like Cardcaptors (Nelvan), Spider Riders and Yo Kai Watch will finally be released onto Blu-Ray in the future just like Beyblade G Revolution, Sonic X and Ultimate Muscle.
I used to watch this when I was in Italy and it was one of my absolute favourites!!! Such a good time and many laughs
Loved the show, but couldn't ignore the fact that aside from Kid Muscle; the other members of the Muscle League got shafted like anyone not named 'Goku' in Dragon Ball GT 🤣
I do remember Checkmate being the first true threat to the Kid. Loved the tournament between Kid's team and Generation X. Mars was a great opponent!
When I got older, I remember finding out about the manga online and learning that Kevin Mask won the final match of the Choujin Crown and NOT Kid Muscle! I LOVED that because Kid had 0 business winning in the anime. I know I know it was the ending of the series blah blah but I just hated how more often than not it was Kid relying on friendship to win as opposed to hard work.
Regardless, I'm waiting for the price of the Blu-Ray set to go down a bit on Amazon before I buy it. Now, if only they'd put Medabots in a complete series format because I remember that show during the Fox Box days as well...
I just rewatch this a year ago, the opening was so hype to a point that after so many years everytime someone mention the word muscle i chant "Ult~ti~mate MUS~CLE"
