  • The Aston Martin DBX 707 is the world's best performance SUV - here's Steve Sutcliffe to explain why.

New 2022 Aston Martin DBX review: aex.ae/3EbT7El
New Aston Martin DBX full details: aex.ae/3gihsxc
The world almost certainly doesn’t need a new 697bhp, £190,000 version of the already exclusive Aston Martin DBX. But as uber-fast, money-no-object SUVs go - the popularity of which is growing in 2022, hence the reason we’ve seen rivals announced recently from both Ferrari and Lotus, to name but two - Aston Martin has elevated the DBX right to the top of a very tall tree with this ‘707’ model (its power output in PS).
In simple terms, it is the fastest production SUV money can buy right now with a top speed of 193mph. So given that it also weighs a fair bit less than its competition from Porsche (Cayenne GT Turbo), Lamborghini (Urus) and Audi (RS Q8), it’s hardly surprising that Aston Martin claims such monumental performance for the 707.
Thanks to the combined effects of a full-blown launch control system, a revised nine-speed automatic gearbox and 900Nm of torque, the 0-62mph time has dropped to a vaguely surreal 3.3 seconds. Crazier still, arguably, is the fact it takes just 7.4 seconds for the 2,245kg DBX707 to hit 100mph from rest, because this makes it one of the most accelerative Aston Martins in history. But is it better than its rivals from behind the wheel? Steve Sutcliffe is at the helm to find out in this review.

Yay! More Steve 🙂 even if it is in a hyper fast bus. The sad thing is, in watching Mr Sutcliffe's superb reviews, it does feel like a final lap of honour as manufacturers fire out their apex combustion engined finery. A simply unimaginable hole will be left soon, when we stop talking about engine characteristics and transmission quality and are left with the metrics of performance, times around a track etc to light our fires. These are videos to savour and cherish.

The answer is no. It closely resembles the attractive DBX. It does not really change everything. Turn up the boost, tighten the suspension, different final drive ratio, more wheel and tire and what? 707, isn't that an old airplane? We've had Vantage S V12, Vanquish S V12, DB11 V12, DBS V12, Vulcan V12s, Valkyrie V12, etc. so the latest and baddest Aston SUV is a Mercedes V-8 with a bunch of boost? And this is supposed to be extraordinary? You have not hit the mark. Not in design or cache. Every other car on the road has a 4.0 litre MB v-8 in it. Pease tell me that there is a special S version about to be introduced which is a Thank you God Aston V12. Then you have something to go up against the new Ferrari V12 suv and can will have everyone listening to the music.

The engineering was never the problem with the DBX, but I do question why they needed to do a massively powerful version so soon after launch? Have sales been so bad that Merc Man Tobias Moers can only think stick more power in? Just as he did back at Merc to ugly cars? And that's really the problem with Aston - their designer Reichman can't design a beautiful car. His designs are all over the place, a mess. Even the seats in this look like off-cuts from a cheap tracksuit. To save Aston Martin you need to sack Reichman.
