I started the Mediterranean diet in the middle of September 2023. I had check up with my physician approximately 6 weeks later in the first week in October. My cholesterol drop from 351 to 317 and my A1C went from 7.1 to 5.4. I also lost 11 lbs.

I feel so lucky to live in Melbourne, Australia, where we are said to have more Greeks than Athens! Post WW2, we had significant migration from Greece, Italy, Malta and other Mediterranean countries. And our climate turned out to be very suitable for growing plants of the Mediterranean - including olives and most fruit and vegetables. So we can confidently purchase extra virgin olive oil grown and packed locally and serve it with abundant vegetables, purchased with minimal packaging or naked. We can grow lemon trees in our back gardens, so paired with the olive oil and fresh herbs from the garden or purchased. However, not everyone has the capacity to eat well, due to lifestyle barriers. The rapid intrusion of the American "western" diet since WW2 has led to the same lifestyle diseases, albeit at lower rates. But increasing rates. I am lucky I can order fresh fruit and vegetables delivered to my door as well as work to a small supermarket with an abundance of options. Keep up the good work! I have lived with multiple sclerosis for nearly 30 years and while I do not always make good choices around eating, mostly I have followed the Mediterranean diet and I live with minimal disability. ❤ and I recently received a score of zero for my risk of dying from heart disease in the next ten years!!!

What perfect timing. I'm recommitting to the Mediterranean Way of Eating. I've strayed due to stress and being busy and haven't felt as good as a result, so it's back to The MD for me. Today I've had smashed avocado on whole grain toast drizzled with EVOO for breakfast, garlic and parmesan white beans with tomatoes for lunch and I'm making pork tenderloin with sauerkraut and roasted potatoes for dinner (it's NY Day and we always eat pork and kraut). Thank you for this lovely video. Please post more videos more often.

Dimitra's Dishes website and RUclips channel is a good place for Greek recipes. I particularly enjoy her meatless Potato and Spinach stew recipe. Also Bill, is there a chance of you coming up with an IBS version of the Mediterranean diet please? Thank you.

Thanks! I was recommended this type of diet to help with my major depressive disorder.
Curious about this diet versus Japanese (Okinawa) diet. I've heard traditional japanese diets are very healthy as well.
Would love to hear your opinion. Thanks!

Thank you for a very informative session! I LOVE your website! It has been my main source when my husband and I started the Mediterranean "lifestyle" in Jan/Feb (2023) - felt great, lost weight & improved medical condition! We dropped off in the summer (cookouts) & the holidays so I'm trying to get back into it. One thing I have noticed is that it can be quite time consuming for cooking. Do you have any recommendations for recipes/cookbooks/websites that would be faster & easier, with ingredients that are readily available at a typical grocery store? I live in a small midwest town without a lot of options like WholeFoods or natural/specialty food availability. Thanks so much for your help!

  • @shetaz905

Perhaps this will help people with Type 2 diabetes: My fasting glucose can run high if I eat a lot of carbs...even complex carbs. I just reduce the whole grains by quite a bit on the Mediterranean diet. Beans are all good. Also, I eat fruit (mostly berries) only once or twice a day.

    • @michealfriedman7084

For diabetes, you should try the keto diet and do some fasting for at least 17 hours.
I'm not diabetic but do eat high fat/low carb.
Check out Dr. Fung, he's from Canada (youtube).
Remember eating fruit will cause the fructose to be stored in the liver. Too much fruit will cause a fatty liver.

Main oil used is Extra Virgin Olive Oil and that is one of the healthiest oils there is..high cholesterol can be due to using the unhealthy fats and oils. The cheese used is generally a soft, mild cheese such as feta, ricotta and it is not over used ..

Unfortunately I found that the published prepared foods recommended for Mediterranean eating don't look very appetizing, cut vegetables into tiny slivers, and a plate of them looks like an overgrown patch of land. Despite that, I tried several dishes, but decoded that I can do much better.
