    QI stands for "Quite Interesting" 🙂. The show has been running for 20 years! Each series is themed around a lettter of the alphabet and related questions are asked. Whether the answers are right though doesn't really matter, so long as they are interesting. It's been a long running gag that nobody knows how the scoring system works, with points seemingly being awarded or deducted arbitrarily. Stephen Fry hosted the first 13 series, A to N. Sandi Toksvig has hosted the last 7 series from M to T. At the time of writing, I believe series U has been recorded, but hasn't been broadcast.

    Lol good timing, I'm a pilot and only got home from work. Fact is yes there is an "autoland" function but it's capabilities are limited airport to airport. Also it's not as simple as pushing a button and the plane works out the rest.
    You definitely got food poisoning on the plane by the sounds Nick, not the first! In the film scenario in all likelihood there is company and non company pilots in the cabin either non revenue traveling or commuting for work, it's happened quite a bit where off duty pilots have had to help. To add to Stephens point about supernumerary crew my old airline would operate with four pilots for ultra long haul oh an QI = Quite Interesting.

      Is there a reason there isn't a backup remote control system? There would be some latency but surely it would be better than trying to explain every step to someone over radio?
      One reason I can think is they don't want the additional attack surface in the software

    • @goodshipkaraboudjan
      @goodshipkaraboudjan Год назад +2

      @@polycrystallinecandy Who is operating the remote? I'd rather no one. We get live link between us and ops which includes engine diagnostics with engineers but they have no input. Best keep it that way in my opinion.
      The likelihood of two pilots being incapacitated and a passenger taking over is so low it's not worth a consideration. The FAs have more jumpseat time and would know better. Either way flying is aviate, navigate and communicate. One thing to keep it straight and level if you know how via visual reference, the rest is a bit complex.
      My airliner experience is limited to the A330, A320/21 but if needed I could confidently provide support to a pilot in either seat of a Boeing with radios, checklists etc. Probably could work it out with enough fuel if I had the time.

    Usual host intro:
    "Welcome to QI, the quizz show where the answers are much more exciting than the questions, but the questions are completely impossible. As I don't really expect any of the panel to know the answers, I shall be giving points based on whether I find the answers interesting, regardless of whether they are correct, or even relevant."

    The closest commercial flight to actually have this happen was Helios Airways Flight 522. The plane depressurised knocking everyone out, the plane flew on autopilot for a while before Andreas Prodromou one of the cabin crew, using a portable oxygen supply, made their way into the cockpit but even though they held a pilots license they weren't qualified for 737s and so weren't able to work out the controls before the plane ran out of fuel and crashed. He did however bank the plane away from the city of Athens and likely saved many lives on the ground.

    About space being a vacuum....
    Outer space is not completely empty; it is a near-perfect vacuum containing a low density of particles, predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos, dust, and cosmic rays.
    Also there is the theory of dark energy and dark matter, which if proven, would really show that space isn't empty after all.

      I never understood why light could travel through space, but sound could not. But then, my knowledge of physics is pitiful!

    • @rescyn1190
      @rescyn1190 Год назад

      @@philipr1567 Light is made up of photons which are 'particles' actually moving through space.
      Sound needs a medium to travel through as it's vibrations; the object making a noise vibrates the air which in turn vibrates your eardrum. There is no 'air' in space for the vibrations to transmit.
      There's a bit more to it than that but as a basic concept that's all you need.

    there was that Helios flight 522 where everybody including the pilots where unconscious. not from food but from a pressurisation problem. The F-16's that were send up to check it out saw one person, next o the fallen over pilots. Possibly cabin crew in the cockpit.
    The outcome can easily be googled, it wasn't a happy ending.
