      If you grew up in this era, you might have a better understanding of the topic of racial pride.
      The Native, "Colored" and Chicano and "Oriental" grade school through high school kids had no representation, in our text books nor holidays nor notable calendar days.
      Meanwhile my Caucasian brothers and sisters had a ready made sense of pride, with Washington and Lincoln's Birthdays, Columbus Day, St. Patrick's Day etc.
      And I remember all of my classmates, being of many of races were instructed to craft decorations, wear green, eat pumpkin pie, etc. etc.
      Don't you see how unfair the educational system was?
      And why no one needed to remind "White people" of racial pride?
      Ali had a big mouth, and race baited by saying a lot of caustic stuff, usually in self promoting himself and his bouts.
      I don't like many of the things he said, but I still love him.
      He was sort of a counterbalance.
      By the way;
      I do not believe Jerry Quarry was a racist.

    Quarry discriminated against? He got a title shot vs both Frazier and Ellis. He got 2 big fights with Ali, Frazier, and one with Norton. Quarry was a solid contender with wins over Lyle, Shavers, Spencer, and Mac Foster. As far as Foreman.....one moment he says he ducks Quarry then in the interview after his 5-6 fighter exhibition Foreman said that Quarry was scared and didn't want none (If memory serves me correctly). As far as Ali's political statements, those were met with mixed views in the Black American community. Back to Quarry......he won big fights and lost big fights. That cost him title shots nothing else.

      I agree with this completely. I think George is being magnanimous…but I do think that his team may have thought that the Quarry who had destroyed Shavers and outboxed Lyle was not the best match up for their new Champ at that point…Jerry had title shots and he had fights that were he to win he’d have gotten a title shot….he just didn’t match up against the top heavies of the 70s but did match up uncommonly well against other contenders who DID match up well with the top heavies of the 70s.

    Quarry started crying about so called “reverse racism” after his victories over Lyle and Shavers. He was informed that he wouldn’t get a title shot against then champion George Foreman because Muhammad Ali (who’d stopped Quarry TWICE) would be next in line and Jerry would have to wait. Quarry went on to fight Joe Frazier, who many people thought was a shot fighter at this point. Frazier gave Quarry a savage beating and basically made him QUIT in five rounds..that ended all of Jerry’s “reverse racism” crap!

    True in 1974, true now. George Foreman openly admitted to not wanting to fight Quarry because he felt like Quarry had a style that could beat him if he fought the right fight. Joe Frazier had the balls of a lion and fought and beat Quarry twice without any special circumstances. Ali's second fight with Jerry was literally minutes after Jerry saw his brother stretchered out of the arena after Bob Foster nearly killed him with that left hook. Jerry literally fought Jimmy Ellis with a broken back.

Bonavena who had decnt power Joe trouble. Fraziers handlers didn't match Joe with Lyle Shavers or even a post shooting version of Cleveland Williams, Frazier was a foil for runners like Ali Holmes or Jimmy Young. Like Norton a foil for boxers but chum for sluggers. Joe was a a great guy who kept it real opposite Ali who was a fraud and put on artist.

      Please show me the part where I Hyped Quarry......I was commenting about Joe Frazier and Ali the fraud. I think being part of 5 fixes requires the title of Fraud. The two Liston FIxes The first fight was a fix per the FBI who was watching white guy point shaving and fight fixing gangster Ash Resnik who was Listons handler. They bugged Resniks phones and concluded the fix was in. The second lIston fight which only an Ali fanboy would believe was real. The two Ali Spinks fights based on another FBI investigation that is still sealed. The FBI is most likely waiting for Arum to die so he won't countersue after they say it was fixed. If they found nothing they would have said so. Please leave pathetic loser identity politics out of this. I dont think the greatest heavyweight was Marciano or any other white guy. I think Marciano was a fraud also. Quarry was never going to beat any slick boxers. He did beat Lyle and Shavers and gave Norton all he could handle. He won against Lyle and Shavers because both had endurence issues.

But in the last few years Bernard Hopkins made comments that he'll never lose to a "white boy", prior to his fight with Calzaghe. Ali was a great presenter of these views as he did it with charm and passion without advocating violence. I think to say his statements aren’t racist is denial.
      Jerry Quarry, here, if you listen to him was responding to people criticising him for daring to voice opinions as a white man. The modern way seems to be to shut down and deny any opinion which doesn’t gel with the standard line. Quarry was a good counter puncher and quick but he didnt hit that harder ..even he had a good chin so i think foreman would have won by TKO ..the fight would have been stoped while quarry took a lot of punishment

      Quarry a good solid contender like Scott Ledoux would fight anyone, yet Quarry was hot and cold. Win fights he should lose.....lose fights he should have won. Foreman would have stopped Quarry inside of 7-8 rounds. Foreman is a major bullshitter. I saw how now he was glad he never fought Tyson, yet called him out until Buster Douglas beat him. Same with Quarry. He ducked Quarry,yet said Quarry did not want to fight him.

    He was a fantastic gatekeeper and won all the fights he should have except possibly the one against Norton where he was on the decline. With Quarry you have to understand he started fighting in kindergarten, and besides genetics, fighting this early is a great way to end up with dementia. He probably had some vague symptoms and was a little off by his late twenties/early 30s. Kind of like Ali in the Shavers fight (although he never had dementia but other negative consequences due to boxing). So he could still fight to an extent, but his prime was over quite early. He still was never beating Frazier, Ali, or Foreman except maybe for headcase Foreman after the Ali fight. Anyone else he could have beaten including Norton, he just fought Norton too late in his career. Norton beating Quarry is like giving Marciano credit for beating Lewis or Kevin McBride credit for beating Tyson. That said, overall Norton is a better fighter because of size and speed.

      I respectfully disagree. He lose or drew against fighters he should have beat, like Alongi, Patterson and Chuvalo. Conversely: he won big fights he had no business winning at all. They tried to make him a gatekeeper but the problem was he destroyed the fighters that were trying to get thru his gate; Spencer, Foster, Lyle and Shavers, and maybe Bodell to a lesser extent? His 1973 wins against Shavers and Lyle are amazing and even more so when you see what those fighters went on to do against fighters who destroyed Jerry. In fact watch Shavers and Lyle club each other into oblivion in 1975 and then marvel at how easily Jerry dispatched both?
      How can it be that in 1973 he absorbed the mightiest blows of Shavers and crushed him within a round? The same Shavers who crushed Norton within a round and almost koed Holmes….years later? Orthe first to deal a loss to Lyle and making it look almost breezy? Lyle was six three and 219…Jerry was six feet and 200! I’m not saying Jerry would have beat George. But there is a small window in late 73 or early 74 when maybe he might have? Bottom line imo, whatever that’s worth, Quarry is the most vexing of heavyweights who never won the title…..underperforming at crucial times…..over performing against bigger, taller, stronger, contenders when no one expected it….distracted and lackluster when he needed to shine….and laser focused and relentless when he was written off….

      They did spar i believe but I'm not accurate on the year it was defo either the late 60s or early 70s but when Foreman fought Scott Ledux Quarry was commentator on the fight and he mentiones he sparred Foreman saying physically he was the strongest man he ever worked with and that Foreman was like a big animal... He also described on how to beat Foreman and sounded like he knew what he was talking about and sounded quite confident in what he was talking about.. Now I have no idea how the sparring sessions went by i get the feeling Quarry held his own especially after the Quarry Shavers fight when Gil Clancy jumped in the ring and called out Foreman who sitting ring side - Foreman was the champ at this time and Gil Clancy said why don't he fight Jerry Quarry we have being trying to make the fight for years, I can't remember exactly how it was worded but he basically said Foreman was ducking Quarry and Foreman dident give a response either, bare in mind a few minutes earlier Quarry had knocked out Shavers in one round so he is excused for that lol, i think that fight sent shock waves throughout out the division.. Also after the Norton fight i think it was Shavers called out Foreman in the ring and said his been ducking him for years, stop hiding George we know where ya are he said but everybody was ducking Shavers in 70s Norton, Ali And Holmes Admitted that they only fought him when they had to cause he was mandatory challenger but regarding Foreman it's interesting to think about it, im not saying they would have beat him but who knows.. • @mollkatless
      @mollkatless 8 лет назад +4

      Gary Chapman i don't doubt he said it, the comeback George of the 90's was much more gracious than the bad-ass George of the 70's. He said many self-effacing sounding things (there is evidence much of it was fake) - one example, he said how scared of Joe Frazier he was prior to their fights - did you see the fights? is there one second George looks scared? most of the time he looks contemptuous, and murderous
      He might have been a fan of Quarry, he was not afraid to fight him, and would have destroyed Quarry - George was one of the biggest heavy weight punchers ever, and Quarry had virtually no defense - it would have ended fast

    • @garychapman4294
      @garychapman4294 8 лет назад +1

      Maybe but Quarry schooled Ron lyle, a very similar fighter to foreman, if Quarry counter punched foreman,it could be interesting, George had a history of tiring quite quickly, Jerry would have had to stick to his game plan,which he didn't always do

    • @mollkatless
      @mollkatless 8 лет назад +2

      Gary Chapman the difference between foreman and lyle is that foreman was more aggressive. he would have pressed the issue, shoving quarry into punching range (as he did with frazier) and likely would have hit quarry more frequently with heavy punches. I also think foreman had slightly better boxing skills, than lyle, if only the sharper and more consistent use of the jab.

    Quarry has a point but that doesn't make his black conspiracy claim make any more sense. I mean, he said Ali was part of the conspiracy even though he had already lost to Ali twice at that point in easy fashion. He got two title shots against Frazier and Ellis, which he had both lost. He fought way too cautiously against Ellis, it was baffling and he fought way too aggressively against Frazier both times.
    He took the 0 of Mac Foster, took the 0 of Ron Lyle, beat Shavers, beat Thad Spencer, got a gift draw against Patterson whom most including me felt like he lost but he did win the rematch in a close decision. He also got a win over Buster Mathis.
    So, what black conspiracy is he talking about exactly? I'm confused.
