    Back in the mid 60s I worked for a rancher in eastern Colorado who took in former racing grayhounds. He had an old 48 Buick Roadmaster that was minus the backseat. We would take off driving across the prairie with 4 dogs in the back. As soon as a coyote was spotted we drove as fast as we could slide to a halt and the chase was on. There is nothing like watching the dogs run in wide open spaces. This video brings back some really good memories.....thanks

    Back when I was young, (I'm approaching 71 now) my Grandpa on my Dad's side had "Walker Hounds" he would hunt with at night. When they got on a scent and started trailing, you could hear them bark and bellow for a mile or two on a calm night. They were gentle and very good natured. Great hounds. My Uncle (same side) had Greyhounds and there were (probably) 15 to 20 other local men who had dogs also. Everyone had CB Radios in their trucks for communication. The guys would go out early on Sat and Sun mornings in the fall and winter and hunt. Trucks would circle a section and (if necessary) someone would walk the half-mile line to spook a Coyote. I remember being out at sunrise on clear, crisp (cold) mornings when the ground was covered with frost or snow and experiencing the thrill of the chase. A Coyote really shined on that sparkling frost or snow. What wonderful memories of better times. (sigh)

Roy used Greyhounds and one Russian Wolfhound to run and kill coyotes and dad told amazing stories about how fast and effective the dogs were. @@WillBravoNotEvil why are the coyotes a nuisance to the dog hunters and why is asking a simple question a problem . finally , what your doing is the definition of a blood sport . you raise animals to kill other animals in a cruel and bloody manor . do you do it for a bounty , for the fur or to protect livestock . i didn't see anything but crop land on the video .

    • @ronniehawthorne7420
      @ronniehawthorne7420 6 месяцев назад +26

      @@oldfart5063. You only see farm land because that’s where the hunting is taking place. Do you really think there aren’t any livestock around and you obviously haven’t had a dog caught out by a pack of coyotes and chewed up badly or killed. Coyotes in most areas don’t have any other predators that will keep them in check because of competition so hunting them is necessary. That involves blood, sorry it doesn’t meet your standards as to how it should be done but freedom is messy, deal with it and mind your own business. Working dogs are great and are only doing what comes natural to them. Keep it up guys, I try to keep coyotes in check where I live with a 6.5 Grendel and a thermal one at a time! I guess that’s a blood sport too. (How terrible)

    I'm sure you get alot of hate, but as a long time bird hunter with GSP's, I love seeing people using dogs for the purpose they were bred for. How fast can a coyote run? I had a GSP that consistently was in the 39 - 40 mph range with the tracking collar, she caught a coyote fairly easily until I stopped her fearing $$$ vet bills. Most people don't realize Fluffy even exists due to breeding by hunters.

      @@Outdoorfever1 Seems like a highly ineffective control method (it might have a very specialised rarely needed niche in very specific situations, far distant from this clip). Also seems to be great ammunition for those (justified or otherwise) who are anti-hunting in general. As far as "control" is concerned, change hands. Like most hunters efforts on pigs, it's inconsequential apart from possibly temporarily removing some individuals & educating and spreading them. If those are problem individuals (e.g. calf killers) and other methods fail, this technique then might have its place with competent operators. Instead it's likely to encourage copying wannabes to give hunting a poorer reputation and educate coyotes even more, and they are apparently doin' jus' fine.

    Having never seen dogs run down coyotes, 1) are you concerned the dogs might latch onto a rabid coyote, 2) how do you get the dogs off a coyote and back into the kennel, 3) are the dogs distracted by another kind of animal, and 4) I had no idea a dog could catch up to a coyote.

      Sighthounds are intelligent and are easily taught from early age, they have the drive to chase anything that moves and if bred correctly certain types of sighthound are the best hunters in the world. The main issue with them is injury due to the need for the chase and the speed they carry, easily 40-45mph and for long enough periods to catch the average Coyote or Deer.

    this reminds me of growing up in the late 70s and 80s in northeastern Kansas. We did plenty of hunting from trucks like this but the best times were when my dad and I would take three dogs and go out on horseback and hunt the Flint Hills of Kansas

    I've never gone coyote hunting but my dogs have been getting into it with them my entire life. One thing I've noticed is that the dogs don't really stand a chance catching one unless they are shaped like a runner. We've always had some combo of standard poodles and giant schnauzers, and while the GS' have all the epic group battle stories it was always at night with the dog basically mugging the coyotes like a silent psycho. On the flip side I've seen poodles chase down coyotes over and over again, even neutering one once, which was a wtf moment for me at like 14. No attempt at stealth or sneakiness on the poodle's part either, which they would do when going after anything else.

    Here in England, we cross long dogs like greyhounds with pitbulls. We call them Bull Greys. Amazing catch dogs. They have the speed of a greyhound. But also the agility and tenacity of a pitbull.

    This is a whole lot better than a Greyhound running around a track chasing a fake rabbit for betting! This is what the dog was bred for, and they obviously love the job, but I fear the early onset of Karens and Kens, and all the tree huggers who do not understand what a nuisance a coyote is until it snatches their little tea cup designer dogs or cats😮

    Oh this brings back memories. My sight hounds were a mix of saluki, irish wolfhound, deerhound and hot blood. My jump box ran 3 to 5 dogs per side usually a mix of trip dog pair of kill dogs and then trainees. Later i started running a hotblood over black mouth cur( lurcher) and a running walker. Anyone who has run sight hounds long enough will realize just how muchntheybrely on their eyes vs nose. Little bit of scent dog crossed on speed makes a world.of difference when that coyote drops in a ditch or takes to a culvert. That last turn out was a LONG one i was actually impressed they caught it. Subbed as.long as ya keep the stag hound content...

    My dad used to tell about how him and his brother used to hunt coyotes back in the late 1920's. On horseback with one Greyhound and one Irish Wolfhound. The Greyhound would catch up to the coyote and knock it down, maybe several times, until the much larger and slower Wolfhound caught up to finish the job. There was a bounty -- a nickel per ear.
