  • I recently designed a table for a client and liked it so much I wanted to build it again. But this time I wanted to see if I could build it in 2 days! I also wanted to share why I made the decisions I did.

    This guy is a pro so I could be 1000% wrong. But I was always taught to let my lumber sit for a bit between stages of milling because it’s not if but when it’ll shift. I usually joint and plane then let sit over night and see if I need to do I little more before a glue up. Just because I was taught with every cut your exposing moisture and if you glue same day as milling your top can potato chip on you.

    • @CoffeyCustomBuilds
      @CoffeyCustomBuilds  7 месяцев назад +38

      There was a solid 5 days between day 1 and day 2. You absolutely need to let the lumber rest. Also, this wood was sitting in my shop for 3 weeks prior to milling to allow it to acclimate.

    Just found your channel, great work. At about 10:20 or so you are hand planing to clean up the top, why are you hand planing instead of sanding? I've never used a hand plane but it seems like it would be harder to make everything flat when using a hand plane and not doing passes the entire table length. Just curious. Thank you!

    • @CoffeyCustomBuilds
      @CoffeyCustomBuilds  7 месяцев назад +2

      The hand plane puts things on the same plane. So it knocks down any high spits. The material that's being removed it higher than the rest. Therefore making it level. Typically it's only higher at the seams. I would have hand plane finished the whole top but the finish I used (hard wax oil) can't be applied to a hand planes surface. It has to be sanded. So the whole top was sanded after I knocked down the high spots with the hand plane.

    • @noahbriley
      @noahbriley 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@CoffeyCustomBuilds I understand the point of the hand plane. And what it does. Could you not have just sanded down the high spots? I guess that’s what I was getting at. Since I don’t own a hand plane, this is probably what I would have done. But I can see how a hand plane would be more efficient and probably more accurate

    Nice table, great video!
    Since you have mentioned in the title I hope you don't mind if I'm asking about that $6K. Please believe me it comes from pure curiosity.
    While this is a really nice piece it couldn't really be any more simple, very straight forward, no tricky joinery no wild angles... Well you have finished it in two days. I'm no expert of the USA timber prices, here I could buy this amount/quality for $3-500 tops. I don't count the glue and the fittings, however that finish (rubio?) could cost some bucks, still I believe we're way under $1K in material. if you add $1000/day for labor (nice!) we're still at the half of that price you mentioned.
    How could you sell a nice but really simple average sized table that made of some ordinary wood (oak?) for that lot of money?
    Sorry if I was too straight forward, I really just would like to see it.
