- This GCI (Great Coasters International) wooden twister coaster might only be 100 feet (30.5m) tall, but reaches a top speed of nearly 58 mph (93 km/h). It features 22 turns and 32 crossovers and was the first coaster to feature a station flyby, which helped it become the best new attraction of 2004.
Dollywood is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

FR, nobody was there so me and my friend went on it 20 times, all the other rides had like 35-60 minutes of a wait with all the people, this one was our absolute favorite and every single time you went up the stairs there was free seats, never had to wait besides at opening time

This roller coaster is so freaking perfect. After the retracking this year, it ROCKETS around its layout. Favorite roller coaster right now.
when i got to dollywood all i was thinking was lightning rod and my first eurofighter mystery mine. then we get in and go to the left and see thunderhead. completely forgot they had a freakin gci. so we did that first thing. top notch. i like it over msytic timbers. pure fun. good drops. good turns. good speed. station fly by was hilarious. top tier wooden coaster very underrated. wish i couldve rode when it was woods behind it and at night.
@@user-xi4ti4qf1zlike that assessment. I live close to kings island and I’ve never thought very highly of mystic timbers either. I really loved The Vortex before it - sad it expired.

Multiple times. Dollywood is my home park! I live about three hours away, so it's an easy trip.
Update: So I live under an hour away now. Moved to Knoxville just over a month ago.

We were just there last weekend. We love Dollywood. Just got season passes even though we are 4 hours away in North Alabama. This ride has some of the best air/laterals combo sideways ejector airtime of any coaster we have ridden!

Smoothest wooden coaster I have ever been on in my life, and one of my favorites of all-time. A fantastic ride! You get some GREAT airtime on this thing.

I’m too much of a wimp for these. If I dislike the drop feeling on a really powerful swinging 80 foot coaster, I SURE AS HECK WOULD NOT BE BRAVE ENOUGH FOR THIS! I hope you guys have fun!
Fair, fair. I’ve had my fair share of woodies after riding the Georgia Cyclone (pre RMC).
You should check out Carowinds in Charlotte NC while your in Pigeon Forge. It's prob 4 hours east of Dollywood but worth the drive.
Of course if everything is opened up.

I took my first visit to Dollywood two days ago, and this was the first coaster we went on.
It set the expectations for everything else so high since it was so fun!! (and every other Dollywood ride met the expectations, they were fun as hell)
This looks like one of GCI's finest. Dollywood is definitely on my list for next season.
I just went to DW for the first time yesterday and Thunderhead is super intense! I highly recommend this park and this ride will not disappoint you.
@@kylesmith5668 Thunderhead is one reason I want to go. I love GCI twisters, and it looks like they used the terrain really well on that one. Like everything in the park really, in that regard.

Dollywood is one of the kings of using the terrain to their advantage. I’m proud to call it my home park.
Just went to Dollywood today for the first time and got 10 rides in. It was me of the best woodies I’ve done and in my top ten for sure.

Scariest part of the whole ride is when you make it up to the platform about to get on the ride and you mostly hear that car going above you and barely see it. It’s kinda like what did I just do to myself

This was my first-ever “adult” roller coaster. Rode it with my dad and loved every minute.

Just rode this for the first time ever today. The absolute best, most intense, traditional wooden coaster I’ve ever ridden in my life, followed closely by the Boardwalk Bullet in Galveston, TX!

I love this ride. The small pops of floater then being brutally slammed to the side really just makes a great, chaotic experience. My favorite ride there (lightning Rod was closed 😒)

Rode this end of last year with my girlfriend on our trip to Dollywood. I have never been to Disney or Dollywood or any major theme parks with legit roller coasters. This was absolutely exhilarating and scared the crap out of me to the point I came close to passing out. No video can truly give you the experience and let me tell you it is MUCH faster when you’re sitting on it and it beats the crap out of you. The only thing that really scared me was in the drops and fast turns I didn’t have the pull bar down as far as I should’ve and it felt like I was going to come out from underneath it. That being said I would 100% recommend riding it if you’re there (just make sure you get that pull bar TIGHT) and I will ride it again next time I go to Dollywood!
Habving the pull bar not far down is good. You won’t fall out and it gives you more room for airtime which is the best feeling on coasters!
The advice of putting it tight is the worst advice ever as that weakens the experience
just left the park, thunderhead was perfect in the front, perfect in the back, perfect during the day and PHENOMENAL once the sun set. airtime is CRAZY. lightning rod is still my number one but wow this woodie is insane

Easily one of my favorites at Dollywood. When I was younger and there wasn’t a lot of people in the thunderhead lines to where we can jump off and jump back on. Me and my neighbor rode this at least 11 times in that same day.
If this thing ever gets RMCed, I want to see that station fly-by converted into some crazy inversion.
I rode this a week ago, and It was SCARY!! (for me) This was like the steepest drop I have ever been on, and oh boy, it was SCARY!! My dad told me that this was just like Big Thunder Mountain, but I was like "REALLY NOW!!??" After the ride, he agreed with me. 😨

This is my favorite coaster. A back row ride is a must when you are at Dollywood. There is so much ejector airtime the entire ride. And the seats are so comfy! My mom literally calls this ride the couch because of the comfy seats. I highly recommend this ride.
Just went on it yesterday for Dollywood's Christmas time at night and Holy Shit, it was the most popular ride. SIT IN THE FRONT it'll throw you up more time than you're sitting down. It makes a world of difference 🥰😊

They upgraded parts of the track for the 2019 season and it’s so much smoother + faster imo

@@coolbean259 I definitely felt like the drop and the first over bank turn were way faster, and we rode it multiple times in both the front and back. Maybe the smoothness made it feel faster? No idea lol

Top 5 woody for me. I kind of liked it better before the Wildwood Grove expansion. The surrounding trees and hills added to its fun.
I just found out about the expansion through this video idk if without being able to look at the vast amount of trees outside of Dollywood (really giving me that “you’re in the wilderness feeling”)while the roller coaster finishes counting down those never ended clicks before I free fall to the ground on a rickety coaster, not knowing if it’ll be the last time I get to do it again would feel the same. The coaster looks like it’s rickety because it’s wooden, very rotten looking, was at the edge of the park (like they were trying to hide it)>>>which the overgrown plants cause, but still maintained enough to not get shut down look is what made that ride fun now it just feels like mystery mine

Took my first trip to Dollywood last week (as of writing this). Unfortunately, I came down with covid after getting back home from the park.
BUT, Thunderhead is the most insane wooden coaster I've ever ridden. Prior to this, Mystic Timbers was my favorite wooden coaster but this......this blows it out of the water. This coaster is MENTAL. I never knew a wooden coaster could feel this crazy to ride. Truly a spiritual experience.
Easily the biggest sleeper coaster I've ever ridden. For half the day I wasn't sure if LR was better 😂

Me and my dad were driving to Nola from CT a few years ago when lightning rod was rarely new. So, I convinced my dad to detour out to Pigeon Forge to Dollywood in hopes of riding LR, but it was closed (a common occurrence we later found), however we didn’t know about this ride. We might have to revisit again soon!
I can't wait to ride this... going to dollywood next week for my class trip. SO excited.

Mystic Timbers was my favorite GCI until I rode this. Now THIS is my favorite GCI and favorite wooden coaster in general lol
I care so much for this ride, and they re-tracked the first drop and first big swooping hill. Now if they could just retract the rest and it will be back to it's former glory!!! In my dreams I wouldn't mind them calling GCI for re-profiling some of the hills for even more airtime and maybe add a new GCI inversion and be the first.

Such a good coaster. Night rides are amazing. Fast, dark & loud. All you can see is the camera flash.
I thought it was called Thunderhead bc of how loud it is. There is a piece of the track that goes over the waiting area, and if a coaster passes by it destroys your ears. It is just that loud on the actual coaster.

This coaster is AMAZING. Its a shame nobody talks about this, currently siting #3 of my 73 coasters ridden, going under velocicoaster and iron gwazi, once lightning rod reopens, depending on how it runs, this may be best in the park..

Just rode this 10 times this week. Love this and mystery mine. Actually like them better than lightning rod. Contract your abs so you don't get knocked around and wear a mouthpiece.
