I know I’m a year late but that gown DESERVED a red carpet - any red carpet! Well not the one at the rug store but any other one, preferably with photographers.
Hello from the future, I'm watching this from 2024 and its hilarious to hear you describe a split side skirt without ever having made a split side skirt knowing that you'll make about 20 of them in the next year.
Well, if her hubby gets nominated again, she will have something ready to go. However, I bet you 10 to 1 she’ll make something new. I’m hoping for just something complimentary like a top or over garments though. I’d be great to see an evolution or mix and match layered pieces.
Your Grammys dress is a black version of my mom's wedding dress that my grandmother made for her from simple whte cotton fabric - the giant skirt and a beautiful long handmade lace veil did the trick.
Magnificent! What a gorgeous gown, and the ruffled top (my 1980s heart wants to call it a paper-bag top) is *chef's kiss*. How appropriate that this video (with your little wrap-up encouraging us to take risks with thrifted fabric) drops on the very day that I found a mill end roll of grey wool flannel for $5. Hellooooo 1930s Oxford bag trousers!
Lovely! ... but don;t "apologise" that it's a two piece dress! Victorian dresses all had a separate skirt and bodice, and 18th C posh dresses all had several different bits! I rather like the way this dress allows a number of different options ... it's beautiful, well done. Perhaps the most impressive and creative element is that the construction itself is pretty simple, but the result is so dramatic.
That is a seriously epic dress. The skirt alone was unbelievable. You looked spectacular in it. You would have given anyone on the red carpet a run for their money. Yeah, I liked it so much that I could wax poetic over it.
The dress DESERVED the photoshoot in the mountains! Unless celebrity spotting is of interest to you - and you have binoculars... Awards shows, in person, as a "normal people" or a tech, are only a smidge better than attending the most interesting 5-hour town counsel meeting you'll ever have the luck to attend - but with slicker production values. I say this as a tech who once fell asleep while recording the very mundane town counsel meeting. The person prepping it for broadcast noticed - because they have to watch the tape on fast forward, and keep an eye on the audio levels - before broadcast. Apparently I'd managed a 17 minute nap, and missed a mere 3 changes of speaker. (To my knowledge, not a single person called in an said anything) They tech gently teased me, and requested I please try not to do so again, or at LEAST leave it zoomed wide. Pity I was visible to the people having the meeting, or I could have kept myself awake. Ooops.
Omg yes, i love those moments when someone compliments what u r wearing that u have made and asks where u got it. I told someone once that i got it from a local place called Homemade. They didnt get it...
I SHOULD stop watching your videos, because you give me more confidence in my sewing abilities than I should have. Now you’ve got me thinking about making a ball gown. I would wear it to feed in my barn, since I have no where else to wear it.🤣
Why am I so afraid to even use up thrifted sheets? I have SO. MANY. THRIFTED SHEETS. Fortunately, I think, I have a dear friend who gets too warm when she’s sleeping and she didn’t know how much polyester was in her wardrobe. I have some old-fashioned white cotton sheets and I’m going to make her some bias cut nightgowns and we will see how she likes them.
the blue mock up was more to my taste, but I'm not FANCY. I hope you can still wear it as you waltzed around the garden or Joanne's or the ice cream truck on your block . the black one was lovely and deserving of being seen. perhaps not at the ice cream truck.
Oh My God!! That dress (skirt and top) is amazing! I don't know how you did the top, but it's very inspiring. You could sell that for thousands! I really like the sustainability of it too. Have you thought about offering to display it at Remainders? Or even some photos of you wearing it? Surely they'd be interested!
I hope you wore your dress as you watched the Grammys! The finished item was stunning, but it did make me smile at the try on of the skirt when you said about how even the top you were wearing worked with it, because I was thinking the same thing. Gorgeous and inspiring x
That dress is absolutely stunning and that fabric was the perfect choice. I love the glimpse of the cranberry color when you twirl...and love that the black material really wasn't black it was green and purple and black, amazing❤
10:55 NGL, that fabric looks like it belongs as a kimono. Absolutely stunning. (EDIT: Just finished watching the whole video and that was truly delightful. Your ballgown looks so gorgeous and this is encouraging me to start my own sewing journey!! *nervously eyes the new, unopened sewing machine box sitting in my corner*)
That is a stunning skirt/top combo that's even more Oscar worthy than Grammies. I hope you'll find an occasion to do it justice in the future. I also wish there'd be any kind of thrift stores around here that sell any kind of fabric (not even your tried and true bedsheets and such). All we have here are second hand stores for clothing 😥
I recently found your videos, and just wanted to say I love your designs and your sheer sewing moxie. This dress was definitely awesome on several levels! I also wanted to say that your pup is adorable. I love Aussies and have owned several (and did ASCA rescue for a few years) since 1990. And I also subscribed.
I’ll say it again: this is the ultimate Cruella dress!!! So here for more of this! Loved seeing the process but what I liked even more is how making this type of garment fits your personality so well. Does that sound weird? I don’t know how to explain it but something just felt right and clicked. It’s the same with your big and extravagant embroidery pieces, those projects make you shine!
You are 100% right... there's something about me and a giant project that just meshes! I think once I get down the basics of a new skill or art, I just find myself dreaming up these extravagant plans, and when I finally attempt to make them it sparks all the joy!
Yep I just knew comfy hiking boots r combat boots would be the perfect accessory! I would also consider wearing this dress without a top (totally risque!!) by putting the waist above the bust line. Over the years I have gotten extra use out of 2 piece fancy wear by doing this. Also by hoisting it up you can go bare foot on a beach and not look one bit over dressed.
double-circle skirts are the BEST skirts! i have one in hot pink--and it has the side splits, so i wear it with ginormous 18th century pockets--and it is my FaVoRiTe!! i'd have loved to see more of the two gorgeous bodices!!
I love the mock up!! Me thinks it’s time to invest in a serger. 😂 And now you have inspired me to use some embellished fabric I’ve been “saving”… and I can’t wait to go to Remainders!!!!!!
Absolutely stunningly gorgeous gown and you rocked that slit! Seriously, you’d kill at the glam bot. That dress was made for it. I hope you find the occasion to wear it (or create one). I’m an associate producer of an award show for the live music industry and wish I could wear something so stunning! Usually, I drag myself to the Nordstrom sales racks when I get to LA and pray the dress gods smile upon me. 😉 I just started sewing, so maybe one day I’ll be able to make one as perfect for me as yours is for you. You sure do inspire! Thank you again for sharing the way you do. You normalize making mistakes, doing things the best way for you, and most of all, you embrace your neurospiciness, something I’ve struggled with my whole life and am only now beginning to accept as okay as opposed to proof I’m broken. 💖🌺
Both tops are beautiful with the skirt. However, you may blow away in that skirt during a high wind storm. Women used to hide their small children under their skirts. I can remember hiding under mom's skirts. All four of us did when we were small back in the early 1950's. Mom had a time breaking us of the hiding habit (as it became embarrassing for her as we got older). Sometimes one of us tore the skirt loose from the top.
I know I’m super late for this but I hope you read this. Getting rid of old bedding smell or any lingering odor in fabric is really easy. You need to soak it in hot water with white vinegar. Do the same thing over again but with baking soda. And then water in hot water with detergent. No more smell. The reason you do each 1st & 2nd soaking separately is vinegar & backing soda cancel each other out. If you have a front loader you can do the first 2 soakings in the bath tub. You won’t believe water what the water looks like after each soak. This is called striping laundry.
Spectacular. I love Who Gives a Scrap in Colorado Springs, CO for thrifting fabric, findings, art supplies, vintage goodies of all kinds. I am certain that the fashion gods send extraordinary fortune to those who repurpose and thrift. Love your channel😅
Oh (please!!!!) tell me you wore the gown (while watching the program on television) my mom and i used to wear elaborate formals while watching such (long long ago in another era)
Glad I found your videos. This dress was beautiful and it's amazing the amount of fabric that is needed but well worth it..... Maybe if you get to wear it somewhere you could make a pair of trousers to wear under and remove the skirt to sit in the seats.. 2 in 1 deal lol! Great job!!!😊
I have a piece of thrifted vintage fabric 100% 12 yards that I got for a total of $3 (best find ever). I know exactly what I want to make with it. I just don’t quite know how exactly to make it so I keep putting it off.. really need to whip out the muslin and just got for it.
The gown is stunning! I have recently gotten some good fabric finds in my local thrift shops, not as good as remainders, but not bad either. Anyway I am thinking I will take your advice and just go for it!
With the red side on that black fabric, I would be SUPER tempted to put the seams on the outside and finish them so they stay nice. Imagine a giant black circle skirt with evenly spaced red stripes! I think I need to make more dresses. They're really fun to design and create, even though I don't wear them. I bet I could convince one of my friends that they need a bunch of dresses...
Omg im in love with the red and gold roll but would never have anywhere to wear it. Hmmm could use it to make what im buried in eventually. I get thats kinda morbid but hey why not go out in hella style. 😂
Gorgeous dress! Your choice to pleat the skirt at the waist was inspiring. I plan (hope, really) to make an ankle length circle skirt in this plaid flannel, and my experience with making circle skirts (with elastic waists, no zippers, please) has been to gather the excess fabric at the waist. But with a plaid, pleating would work much better. This was an awesome skirt, and I REALLY hope you can wear it some day to a wonderful event. And I hope your spouse gets his green card very soon.
Please show how you made the matching tops for this ball dress! Some of us don’t have TikTok or instagram.😢 I was sooo bummed when ya glossed over that part of the gown! 😮
Kimonos seem easy. Just one layer is ok with light lining... I hadn't fix that missing piece after over a decade. Happy to hear about your Grammy!!!❤❤❤
My gosh that was gorgeous. I would've been tempted to make the top with the reverse of the fabric, which would tie in with the flashes of the red from the slit of the skirt. But your final result was perfect, I love the ruffle around the top, really accentuates the hourglass shape. Beautiful
I’m a professional harpist and one of the things that I want to learn how to make are ballgowns and other unique dress designs for music videos and this was super inspiring to me ❤❤❤❤
your dress turned out beautiful. I liked the sweetheart neckline the best...BUT, the red top is perfect as well, with a brooch it reminds me of that Bette Grable movie where she said buckle up it's going to be a bumpy ride...the wide skirt with the three quarter sleeves, the top was black, but I like the contrast of the matching red top with the ragland sleeves....a dressing/causal hollywood home party, kind of thing....new to your channel...
Charlie! You are supposed to fold excess off the roll. Then secure with head pins mark out secure with head pins again then cut. You make it look so easy on video. I really enjoyed your sharing! Tqvm 🎉
You are a joy to watch and inspire me to taking up sewing again. You crack me up and bring smiles to my face. So glad I found your channel. The gown is stunning!
This gwon is so gorgeous and dramatic and the location of the photo-shoot just make it pop so much! And I'd love to make a giant crazy gown but a) I barely have storage space for my daily wardrobe as it is and b) i can't seem to make myself sew something I won't wear until it falls appart, no matter how cheap the fabric was.
This video made me so happy. In fact, stumbling into your IG hacks video made me like you and binge a lot of your videos. But this beautiful gown and watching your joy as you made it, really made me happy.
very nice! I really enjoyed watching your video and you looked lovely! loved the dress! Especially your process.- no running for patterns, your went with what you knew and were willing to stretch yourself. Glad you didn't chose the red/gold(my mom called it chinoiserie) It is very heavy and not easy to work with.
Charli how ive never seen this make up gown video just boggled my mind but on watching your OUTSTANDING dress i am so glad ive bindged this evening (uk time) on videos unseen by me. I must watch this back again to find out how you made the corset emperor waistband under bust that is one heck of a look i so want to use it on something somewhere. Congrats on this dress its more than OUTSTANDING xxx🎉
WOWZA, This is my favorite thing I have seen you make. All the top options a viable. You had way more excitement than I have seen in any of the other videos. I think the postive attitude worked. This us beautiful and beautiful on you. This Remainders place, I have to visit. I hope I can get to CA next year. 😊
Right?! The casual, oh, this-is-just-a=mock-up-I-didn't-end-up-doing vibe was hilarious. It was a fun prequel, learning the origin story 😆
😂😂😂😂
Grammys or not, you made a gorgeous gown! I can't wait to see your next one 😊
Aw thanks very much my friend!
I love everything about this gown ❤
Well, if her hubby gets nominated again, she will have something ready to go. However, I bet you 10 to 1 she’ll make something new. I’m hoping for just something complimentary like a top or over garments though. I’d be great to see an evolution or mix and match layered pieces.
i love that you brought your dress up to the mountains, how fitting for a gorgeous gown
Your Grammys dress is a black version of my mom's wedding dress that my grandmother made for her from simple whte cotton fabric - the giant skirt and a beautiful long handmade lace veil did the trick.
"If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all." The skirt and tops were lovely.
Ooo I want to see a kimono style dress with the red and gold fabric! Gorgeous!
That's immediately where my head went too!
@@gettheetothestitchery you could make a whole army of kimono from 40 yards. Wow dang.
Oooooo that is such a good find, and a perfect project for it!!
I love that you HAD to know the yardage, I would have too! It borders on addiction!😸😸😸
Lovely! ... but don;t "apologise" that it's a two piece dress!
That is an excellent point! Dresses don't have to be connected into one piece... I shall no longer quantify them as such!
And thank you so much!!
That is a seriously epic dress. The skirt alone was unbelievable. You looked spectacular in it. You would have given anyone on the red carpet a run for their money.
Yeah, I liked it so much that I could wax poetic over it.

The video at the mountains is amazing. All that was missing was a dragon, and you could totally be a dragon queen.
Love the bonus fabric haul in this 😊 That dress is perfection. It would have been wasted on the Grammys.
Aw thanks! It definitely would not have been easy to wear there... XD
Omg yes, i love those moments when someone compliments what u r wearing that u have made and asks where u got it. I told someone once that i got it from a local place called Homemade. They didnt get it...
I have been sewing for 58yrs and I loved your skirts! They both turned out beautifully.
You do you!😊
Coming from an expert seamstress ❤
I can only imagine hiking up into the mountains with that dress but omg the background with the epic dress was amazing 😍
Luckily this was a spot where you can pull right off the road - no hiking required! (Just creative framing)
I SHOULD stop watching your videos, because you give me more confidence in my sewing abilities than I should have. Now you’ve got me thinking about making a ball gown. I would wear it to feed in my barn, since I have no where else to wear it.🤣

This actually really motivated me, I lived the dress and the video. Looking forward to the crazy ball gowns of your future!
Me too! Glad it motivated you to make some crazy stuff yourself!

Me too. We don't have anything like goodwill. Even remnants in the fabric shops are priced at the original price for however long they are.
WHAT a dress!!! the ruffle top with it is stunnning, but the simple version also lets the skirt shine. Amazing effort!
I recently found your videos, and just wanted to say I love your designs and your sheer sewing moxie. This dress was definitely awesome on several levels!

Amazing "Loboutin" dress! Adore that it's really a skirt, so you get all the mix-and-match options for even more wearability!
Gorgeous and the final video clips help to make it look even more majestic!
Thank you so much!

I love the mock up too!
You better bring a big empty suitcase for Remainders! And yeah... serger is on the list.
This is absolutely over-the-top stunning and I love it so much. It looks SO impressive! Divine.
Its your positive attitude for me. I would be too dissappinted to even make a video out of it.
I love the flash of color inside.
If you soak the test skirt duvet in baking soda and white vinegar that may help to get rid of the odor.
Absolutely stunningly gorgeous gown and you rocked that slit! Seriously, you’d kill at the glam bot. That dress was made for it. I hope you find the occasion to wear it (or create one). Sew more dresses. Because fun. I am making my own custom fabric skirt...for the best reason! I want to! Happy sewing!
You made a gorgeous 'dress' and it looked like you were having a blast wearing it! Hoping you'll get the chance to do that again, very soon!
Cannot wait to see what you do with the 40 yards of red & gold satin...Imperial court kimono anyone?😶
Both tops are beautiful with the skirt. However, you may blow away in that skirt during a high wind storm. Women used to hide their small children under their skirts. 😮❤😮WOOOOOOWWWW!😮❤😮 That turned out absolutely stunning!! The fitted bustier was lovely, but that fluted top literally made me shout YES!!
That's a DRESS. Stunningly gorgeous. I hope you find *an occasion* to wear it.
Wow! What a beautiful gown! It looked so gorgeous on you! I love how the fabric colour shifted in the sunlight! What a breathtaking photo shoot!
That first skirt, the white- blue one : GORGEOUS! On it's own and on you!
Oh (please!!!!) tell me you wore the gown (while watching the program on television) my mom and i used to wear elaborate formals while watching such (long long ago in another era)
Haha unfortunately no, by then I had shed it in favor of comfiness! I'd love to wear it to a watch party or something in the future though!
But what was the Grammy nominated album that Matt worked on??? 😅
Absolutely fantastic gown!! I'm sure you'll get to wear it at an awesome occasion!
Oo I so want to try making an awesome trouser/giant skirt combo - that would be perfect for situations like that!
You Won the Best Dressed; that dress was Absolutely Fantastic! What a fabulous final project; Congratulations!
I need a store like remainders in my area
I have a piece of thrifted vintage fabric 100% 12 yards that I got for a total of $3 (best find ever). I know exactly what I want to make with it. I just don’t quite know how exactly to make it so I keep putting it off.. really need to whip out the muslin and just got for it.
The gown is stunning! I have recently gotten some good fabric finds in my local thrift shops, not as good as remainders, but not bad either. Anyway I am thinking I will take your advice and just go for it!

Gorgeous dress! Your choice to pleat the skirt at the waist was inspiring. Zip ties for boning - genius!
Wow and a half! Completely gorgeous! You are fearless!
Please show how you made the matching tops for this ball dress! Some of us don’t have TikTok or instagram.😢 I was sooo bummed when ya glossed over that part of the gown! 😮
I love full circle skirts. I am so very jealous. There is nowhere in my life to wear that dress, but I love it.
Beautiful
I’m a professional harpist and one of the things that I want to learn how to make are ballgowns and other unique dress designs for music videos and this was super inspiring to me ❤❤❤❤
That dress is gorgeous!
That skirt with the fitted sweetheart neckline is so glamorous and just beautiful!
A bright ray of irreverent sunshine with a reverent dawgie. I feel more confident now to explore self drafted dresses
your dress turned out beautiful.
Tqvm 🎉
That dress is stunning. Fit for a Queen.❤❤
Magnificent dress and lifetime photo shoot.
That skirt with the matching fitted top was AMAZING !
Stop doubting yourself as you do a fantastic job. Well done you
You are a joy to watch and inspire me to taking up sewing again. You crack me up and bring smiles to my face. So glad I found your channel. The gown is stunning!
This gwon is so gorgeous and dramatic and the location of the photo-shoot just make it pop so much!
And I'd love to make a giant crazy gown but a) I barely have storage space for my daily wardrobe as it is and b) i can't seem to make myself sew something I won't wear until it falls appart, no matter how cheap the fabric was.
i love it when you do the yardage , love clarence thrift even yardsale for fabric
OMG, gorgeous!! You looked AMAZING in the photoshoot!
It is a gorgeous gown. You should feel very proud of yourself.
Omg, that skirt is a dream, soooooo FULL AND SWOSHY, you looked amazing in it.
Thank you so much! Swooshing around the house in it was definitely making me feel like a princess!
Freaking fabulous gown. I so enjoyed this journey.
You looked absolutely amazing in it! Even in the part where you were just having a bit of camera fun with just the skirt. Simply amazing!
You look so happy and beautiful twirling around in your fabulous creation!
I love the dress, I love your personality and I love your channel.
It is stunning I didn't like the ruffles on top but without them it's stunning
You are so creative, talented, and entertaining! I love watching your videos. You’re helping me get my creative spark back. Thanks.
A beautiful piece of work. I love the fabric.
I just LOVE your videos! Feeling inspired to get back to sewing 💖
Great job, I’ll use fabrics and sew it! I really appreciate the idea!
I WANT the numbers!!
