      How much gas would the maneuver need to slow down the pilot enough so they don't die instantly when they land on a building or the ground. I imagine a lot.

      Its nice that they attempt to make some kind of sense, but it still doesnt change the fact that 3DMG is still ridiculously unsafe and ineffective, ESPECIALLY since their technology is so limited. Nasa pours millions of dollars with modern age tech into their space programs to properly train astronauts to withstand the forces. These guys swing around in a forest with wooden suspensions being their main construction material. Sure a human with tip top training could stay concious enough to travel in a short line to make a cut, but turning corners and blasting forward constantly like they do in the show would knock you out instantly if not snap your goddamn neck and spine. The science of 3DMG doesnt line up at all. Not a single bit. Still awesome though.

    The only issue I have with thisepisode is that mikasa does not need to go ANYWHERE near 45 or even 40 g becauseshe started that attack runfrom close to the ground. In the shot you can see the buildings around her falling away as she races toward the titan. She is also not trying to get close to 30m in the air, because 15m is the tallest titan outside of the colossal. She is realistically moving at about a 20 decree incline through the city, and likely does not need more than 15 g to get a sufficient parabolic arc to reach the neck of a 15m titan. And, given the fact that she is probably wearingcompression clothing and a sport harness, AND had training, AND is a generic superhuman, that would be a cakewalk for her.

      Know this is old but something else to add. The scouts can angle their gas downward by tilting their body to slow their decent. They can't push hard enough to leave the ground with gas alone, but enough to assume you could use downward gas to slow or even temporarily stop a scout's decent while flying forward through the air. Levi is shown doing this a lot but then again he's Levi. Probably why he runs out of gas so fast

    *The "Kyle is Wrong!" FAQ*
    1. Yes, assuming no vertical force from the wire is a simplification and not accurate. The closer she got to the titan, the more the velocity vector would point upwards. However, because I assumed she couldn't fall very far vertically, and that the movement time was under a second, I chose not to factor it in.
    2. I chose the block length based on the how it looked compared to the previous episode I did on OPM. It wasn't arbitrary.
    3. "ODM," "3DMG," doesn't matter. Nerds.
    4. The gas in the 3DMG DOES NOT act as a thruster, it spins the fans that reel in the wire. The amount of gas you'd need to lift a person even a little bit could not fit in those canisters.
    5. "Survivable" is very different from "safe." John Stapp who I mentioned broke nearly every capillary in his eyeballs on that 45g run, and had impaired vision for 24 hours. He also broke wrists and ribs on runs, and received several concussions. I didn't mention this because I was wondering if you'd be straight-up dead from 3DMG use, and I don't think you would be if you were properly trained (the kids are) and supported (the canon makes a big deal of the leather straps they use). Also, there are a lot of "deadlier" moves made in the anime, but I chose one that I felt was more representative of general use.
    This was a very difficult episode to write, so if you disagree with any of my assumptions, I understand. Sorry. In every episode I'm trying to introduce or explain at least one basic topic, not give a definitive analysis or masterclass. Just trying my best. Thanks for watching. -- KH

    • @LewisJohn
      @LewisJohn 7 лет назад +6

      so in a nut shell you are saying it is survivable thats understandable now the next big one you will get is if the 3dmg is even mechanically plausible I won't comment on that since I am not a mechanic nor an engineer but my suspicions point me to believe that mechanically the 3dmg as we see it in the show and manga is mechanically implausible but not impossible

    • @danslesilence

      no, since Spider-Man's movement is based on his swing (much slower than the AoT 3DMG) and add to that his superhuman physique, so I'm willing to bet Spidey can pull his swings off without a problem.

    • @polyjohn3425
      @polyjohn3425 7 лет назад +3

      +Lewis John Technically they're not outright impossible, but with current technology, there's no way they could be that compact.
      The biggest problem with the 3DMG is the power it would require. The compressed gas they use is a bit of a hand wave. In reality, while compressing gasses is a good way to store energy, how quickly you can re-extract the energy from the gas expanding (and therefore the amount of usable power those gas canisters could give) is limited by how much ambient heat the gas is able to absorb, since the pressure and temperature of gasses are interdependent. Thermodynamics is kind of complicated, but for the amount of power the 3DMG uses those cylinders would have to be getting way more heat than they could just absorb from the air around them.
      You could get more power from the gas by adding a compact heat source, but we never see that mentioned. The long and short of it is that the rigs we see are just too small to be able to do what they do in the show.

    *_WARNING, NERD-OUT INCOMING_*
    Mikasa is actually literally stronger than most characters, the manga explains that this bloodline (Ackermans) is basically the perfect soldier for fighting titans.
    Ever notice that the average character uses the gear in low energy, tactical bursts with breaks in between? Ever realize the *_HEAVY_* requirement and emphasis for team work?
    Playing a few Attack on Titan games, I kinda brought it down to this...
    1 squad of Government Issue joes can take down a titan, if nothing goes wrong. A squad is made of 5-6 people in the show, so I delegated roles to the people in the squad, and I broke down a basic tactic for a normal, run of the mill titan.
    *This scenarios are assuming you are fighting in a City, probably the second best fighting area besides the forest. there is literally NO WHERE that you CANNOT go, and most titans are right at eye level or just above eye level if you're standing on the rooftop. This scenario also assumes that the titan is a 10-15 meter titan.*
    Members
    Lead - An elite member (maybe 2) is on standby, staying somewhere BEHIND the titan, waiting to kill it.
    Legs team - A pair of soldiers takes out the legs of the titan by slicing the tendons connecting the foot and leg at the ankle. This is commonly used in the show, and is taught in training.
    Arms team - This team takes out the arms if the legs are inaccessible to the Legs team (Corridor is too narrow with no space to move, etc) Probably the most dangerous job of them all.
    Distraction - Easily the second most dangerous job of the group. The soldier tasked with this job MUST be of the same caliber, or close, to the lead member to offer ease of escape. This job requires literal balls of pure steel.
    The distraction may need to be comprised of a few units, since titans are drawn to the largest group of humans.
    First, the distractions get hold of the Titan's attention, drawing them into a space where the legs team can easily slice out the tendons, forcing the titan to drop to its face for a solid minute. This gives time for the Lead member(s) to kill it.
    Second, the distraction team may try to get it into a more open spot, however maybe due to poor street designs, the legs are totally inaccessible. The arms team would be tasked with at the very least, cutting out the muscles that allow the arms to be raised right that the back of the upper arms. Another idea, but HIGHLY dangerous, is to have the distraction team have the titan try to grab them, while the arms team straight up cuts off the hand at the wrist, basically making it so that the titan cannot grab. Then, the Lead team flies in to slice the nape, killing it.
    Third, is basically a last resort, and is to be reserved for the BEST soldiers. just flying in at rapid speed and overpowering the titan with surprise. this requires INCREDIBLE body strength, nerves, focus, and stamina. you'd easily have to hit Kyle's 45g limits, and would probably take the soldier out of the battle for a while. Basically, you're pushing your body and your gear to the absolute limit.
    These tactics are to be used against a SINGLE titan. groups of titans are INCREDIBLY difficult to pull these maneuvers and tactics on, since you can immobilize one titan quite easily, but the second one could be merely meters behind the first, and surprise you.
    *_NERD OUT OVER_*

    • @loginfirstlast
      @loginfirstlast 7 лет назад +14

      Japanese sword smiths when finished with their blade would test it by slicing through cadavers and convicted prisoners sentenced to death. There are swords that are still intact today with inscriptions saying "5 bodies cut with a hip cut slice." So yes it is possible to cut through several people. As well as the sword that Guts uses is extremely large and I assume is based off of a zanbatō sword, which were extremely large and were designed to for striking horses.

    • @gslinger19
      @gslinger19 7 лет назад +4

      Guts would have to weigh a lot more than the sword to swing it in the first place. But anime physics in place, oh yes, very much so. Armor isn't really something you can cut through easy but the concussive force alone from getting hit with that sword would destroy you even inside a full suit. It'd crush the horse to the ground at the very least I would think. I don't know how hard and he'd have to swing though to cut through ring and plate with a sword like he does pretty regular but would have to be insanely fast. Unarmored, easily I should think. For guts I mean. I would think cutting through a whole horse even with a really big sharp sword in one hit would very difficult at the least. It'd be a great episode topic. How would you swing one of those swords around?

      I mean, it is said in the anime itself, that the blade is less of an actual blade, than a hunk of iron that basically just crushes the enemy. What would concern me more than a horse or a person would be another blade. I would assume that a ~200kg hunk of iron would apply a LOT of pressure when striking another blade, especially considering said hunk probably has a sharp(ish) edge. I'd assume that if Guts were to actually face off with basically any other swordsman, he'd more or less cut through their blade without much problem (and the guy behind the blade as well probably). Honestly, the force of the sword alone should be enough to genuinely throw people around if he strikes them. And I suppose that you can very well cut a horse in half with that blade (severing the spinal chord, not cutting along it), since a horse isn't really that much more robust in build than an entire armoured human - and that blade probably applies a higher force to the horses back (with one strike) than a guillotine would.

    I feel like a lot of theorists take the imagery in the show literally, and completely forget it's anime. Time is screwed with a lot in anime for dramatic scenes, i may look like someone is moving mach one, but it's just the animator's playing with speed, just like how a person can have a full paragraph of thought in a fraction of a second in the show.

    • @remora6748
      @remora6748 3 года назад +3

    • @Lucas61616
      @Lucas61616 3 года назад +3

      To me its a similar effect to jojos ridiculous speeches. "I can stop time for 5 seconds" and then speaks for a minute straight before its over. In the manga they were just speech bubbles, so it didn't create a weird sense of time.
      I think that's exactly what's going on with speed in AOT, people take it way way too literally and they're probably the people who unironically don't understand how dio talks for a minute on end in "5" second timestop.
      The actual thing you'd need to watch out for are the sudden turns and crazy movement that would actually effect you beyond bruising and exhaustion. Flying foward in a line would likely be doable for a well trained actual person, but then if you apply any sudden turns or momentum shifts from the show, that's where you'd see larger damage, more lasting effects, and is often the aspect that makes a lot of the cannon fodder soldiers die to all kinds of titans.

      had suffered a complete red out. "When I got up to the sled I saw his
      eyes... Just horrible," recalls Nichols, his voice cracking with
      emotion. "His eyes …were completely filled with blood." When the Sonic
      Wind had hit the water brake, it had produced 46.2 Gs of force. And for
      an astonishing 1.1 seconds, Stapp'd endured 25 Gs. It was the
      equivalent of a Mach 1.6 ejection at 40,000 feet, a jolt in excess of
      that experienced by a driver who crashes into a red brick wall at over
      120 miles per hour. Only it had lasted perhaps nine times longer. And

    The drop of 1 meter can be mitigated by firing the cables to anchor points above the titan so the user is pulled forward and slightly upward, thereby negating gravity.
    An important point you missed is that the man who withstood 45G was strapped in a seat that supported his back and neck. You frequently see the users being bent backwards when their gear pulls them forwards, at 45G their back and/or neck would snap.

    I think you forgot another factor: you can see in the diagrams between episodes sometimes that there is almost a banded brace system that looks like it's meant to distribute the force from the ODM rig throughout the body. Under significant G force, those bands might also function like compression socks and retain a relative distribution of blood throughout the body. you'd probably need to take a deep breath to oxygenate your blood in anticipation for a big boost but if your blood is being prevented from being forced out of your extremities (or into them) you can tolerate a higher G load

    • @ReblazeGaming

      Stuff like humans shifting into titans is why we have suspension of disbelief. Whenever someone tries to make sense of fiction e.g, calculating something in a superhero show, some people are like "Well the show has people who shoot lasers out of their eyes and you think THAT is unrealistic?". Well that's because for certain things like I said we suspend our disbelief. So using the fact titans can transform as to why we should let everything slide doesn't work. Regardless ODM gear is cool asf

    Just to join in on a two-year-old discussion, one potential issue with the measurement of Mikasa's speed (aside from the fact the show dramatizes movement so it's difficult to get an actual read on how quickly she's going) is the fact that she... may not actually be in freefall. ODM gear has a rear-mounted thruster that orients at roughly sixty degrees facing downwards, in the small of the user's back. It's often used for extra speed but it's more commonly used as a source of extra thrust- and we see it during the final battle in season one capable of lifting Mikasa's full body weight as long as her centre of gravity remains stable. So she might actually be hovering forward, rather than falling. Just my two cents.
