It's ok for poor parents to tell their children they can't buy them the flashiest toys or throw the biggest birthday party BUT it should absolutely not be the child's problem beyond that! Do not involve your children in adult problems!

Yeess! Making your children understand financial responsibility is sooo important. Because we can't afford trips to Hawaii or spend hundreds upon hundreds for a birthday party + gifts we try to give her quality time and smaller things.
She is still learning but is starting to understand sacrifice. She wants to continue her cheerleading program well then a brand new iPad, iphone, and brand Nike shoes are not in her future.

Meh it’s not okay for poor parents to work so much they don’t have time for their kids, project their toxic habits into them, and then pass their poor financial literacy onto them. There’re success stories with children who grew up in poor households, but too many end up just like mom (and dad assuming he’s in the picture) if not worse.

I love that she’s talking about her childhood. Obviously I’m not an actress but my mom thought I was “gifted” enough to be her meal ticket. Private school when she could afford it, music lessons, straight A’s or don’t even speak. I did drugs (sometimes with her) to cope which was fine to her bc I lost weight, my hair started falling out in high school from stress and I developed insomnia. Still got into a prestigious college but it was a big betrayal that I couldn’t call her everyday but at least I sent money so I remained an ok daughter.
She’d randomly remind me bc of a hip deformity I would die in child birth so it’s best I never get married… she lied. And when she realized I decided to buy a farm with my then boyfriend now husband she said anything she could to make me doubt him.
After our wedding she attempted to wiggle her way in for us to build a home on our property for her to “retire” (she has no job). He had reservations about it and one crazy text after another we cut ties in 2021. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
I’ve heard some of this actress’s stories now and they remind me of my mom so much. I just wanted her to be proud without me instantly owing her something. My daughter will never experience that.

Don't burden your kids with family finances. I would always be creative about why we couldn't get the extras. At seventeen she got a job and negotiated a split of what I would pay and get what she wanted. At 28 she again asked about "why" I wouldn't buy some trendy item for her as a teen. I finally told her, we were broke hon. I struggled paying the rent, car notes, groceries, her extra curriculums, etc. She has been a little extra caring, supportive, and loving ever since that conversation.

I know my mum didn’t force me into child acting. But I also grew up with my mum screaming at me because I put holes in my tights or in my shoes we got 2 pairs a year out summer school shoes and out winter school shoes. That’s all we had. We shared a bath my sister and me because my mum couldn’t afford to run 2 baths. One time they pawned a necklace to buy food for us. They told me way to much about debt etc when I was little nothing about finances other than “make sure you save” I couldn’t save for shit 1 because I didn’t get any money and any money I did get I had to spend it because I didn’t have anything so any little thing I saw I had to have. When I was 9 I added up on a calculator how much my mum and dad had spent in rent over the 9 years we had lived in that house and I was shocked at how much that was. My mum also drilled into me that if I wanted anything nice in life I had to work for it. And since I was 16 and old enough to work (I’m aware I could have got a paper round, I tired I didn’t get one) I have only been unemployed 2 months since I got my first job at 16 and I’ve had 7 jobs over the years sometimes 2 at the same time. Point in parents who have money issues. Try and hide it as much as you can please. Like I definitely think it’s better not knowing and finding out later on than having the trauma with money that I have today. I can’t spend money properly now. I spend most my money on food because food is a necessity. But when it comes to a dress that’s £30 that’s to expensive. Or shoes that are £40 it’s to much. Last Christmas was crazy me and my partner had a tough year and my partner hadn’t been able to work a lot because his health started declining. He was bringing int he most money so we had been in our savings a lot so when Christmas came we were struggling. We are middle children so we like spoiling people how we wanted to be spoiled. Anyway. I got a new job in November so when I got paid on the 24th me and partner went last minute shopping for everyone. It was horrible but better than nothing and we made it work. But by god it was a lot of trauma it brought up. We don’t struggle with money anymore we both earn really good wages. But I still moan at my kid about how much things cost, i try to not, I don’t make it a guilt trip like what my mum did and I don’t put the blame on him but I don’t want him thinking he can just be careless and not work for what he wants instead of getting handed it. If ur talking money to your kids make sure your teaching them how to be smart with it and not telling them if they don’t clean there room and the landlord comes he will kick us out and have to sleep in a tunnel it’s not right

Is it ok to feel proud for her? Is like she is yelling out loud what many of us haven't been able to do so far. If we think of all of us children with abusive parents and think of us all like a sisterhood/brotherhood, she is the bravest in a long time. I know I haven't found a way to turn all the negative into positive yet. I'm hoping I can do that soon.
How many uncomfortable conversations have many of us had when we were humiliated for saying what an awful mom or dad or sister, etc we have? At least in Latin America is really hard to say something bad about a mother. They're labeled as saints just for having children. And the dads can't be bordered with childs issues... The culture is changing, but very slow.
    I love her book.

They eventually wanted me to travel every weekend, my mom told me and gave me an option. I turned it down. I always regretted it until i heard these stories

The fact that she knew that at 6 is so very sad. That's my littlest guy's age, and I can't even imagine him being THAT age and knowing our financial issues and feeling like he has to "save" us... uh. That's way too much pressure for a small child, and 6 is still a small child.
