    It is a CRIME that Fellini didn't return to the stage later on for Best Director.

      Alfred Hitchcock wasn't even nominated for The Birds unfortunately. Especially, considering that it is his last successful film in his career. Plus, the fact he never won an Oscar for directing is just insane.

      Foreign film directing awards were a tough sell to Americans. We properly wanted to keep the competition 'in house'. They had Cannes and the The Venice Lions. The best foreign film if the film is a Fellini film is a FELLINI prize of course.

    Been waiting decades to see this, as it was the last broadcast I had not been permitted to stay up and watch. Delightful! Jack's intro of Julie was most gracious indeed. One year later, she'd be the winner. At the time of this presentation, she was filming THE SOUND OF MUSIC. By the way, Julie's gown was actually a silvery white; it's what she wore to the world premiere of MARY POPPINS a few months later.

  • @JerseySurvivor
    @JerseySurvivor 11 лет назад +6

    Looking at color photos, Julie's gown looked blue but I believe it was silvery white and appeared blue because of the backstage curtain. At any rate she was gorgeous. This was her first AA appearance and she seems a bit nervous (neither Mary nor Emily had opened yet) compared to the self assurance a few years later (wish they'd upload her giving Best Picture to In Heat of the Night).

    I know I mentioned this on a previous video, but I thought I'd bring it up again. If the person who puts up the videos on this channel is a member of the Academy, I have an idea: How about putting every televised ceremony on this channel as one complete video for each. Start with the announcement of the nominees then go to the ceremony. Just an idea I had.

    And, when she wore the gown with her white mink stole (as she did at the MARY POPPINS world premiere), it took on a slightly grey cast. I have seen color footage of that. What a gorgeous shape she had, and this dress shows it off quite nicely.

    To the Academy or Anyone Out There ~
    Can someone please set me straight: Isn't it the producer(s) who accepts the
    Oscar Award for Best Foreign Language Film? Carlo Ponti and Dino di Laurentis
    produced several of Fellini's movies ~ should they not also have received awards?
    Or, with Foreign Language, is it the Director who takes home the Oscar?
    [Not an earth-shattering question but merely a "curiosity" one! Thank You!]

    • @musicaltheatergeek79
      @musicaltheatergeek79 8 лет назад +5

      You're thinking of Best Picture, which officially goes to (and is accepted by) the winning film's producers. But the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film is not given to a specific individual but is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. However, the rules currently governing the Foreign Language Film category state that "the Academy statuette (Oscar) will be awarded to the picture and accepted by the director on behalf of the film's creative talents." Therefore, the director does not personally win the Award, but simply accepts it during the ceremony. Furthermore, two years ago, they also started engraving the director's name onto the statuette, in addition to the winning country.

    At last!!!! Saw a color picture of Julie that night and her dress was a beautiful blue. And what a choice!! That's Gulietta (Mrs. F) next to him. And look at Roman in front of him on the aisle. He looks like Wayne Newton!!!

    • @jefdarcy
      @jefdarcy 2 года назад

      Polanski writes about the ceremony in his autobiography, how he loved 8 1/2, how he felt slightly disappointed, but had known deep down that Fellini would win and that it was well-deserved, and how Guilietta burst into tears when the winner was announced.
