Cary Grant was 75 years old at this event and he was still very handsome, charming, and classy
Cary Grant looks like the world's greatest grandad
why is this so funny and accurate at the same time
He looks better then any 30 old today
Everybody loves Cary Grant!
@@baboom007 iso agree with you, he was so good looking
The older Cary got, the more gorgeous he got. In spite of all the indignities he was subjected to in his hilarious comedies he never lost his dignity and in the dramas he never lost his sense of humor. I love him, He's my all time favorite actor and nobody in the last fifty some years since he retired from acting has been able to match him for looks, charm, versatility, comic timing, talent and the ability to make people love him.
Cary’s smile at Ingrid’s smile is the demonstration that class, elegance, and grace are things you can only born with
It's hard to believe Cary Grant only lived another seven years. His demeanour and appearance are both so youthful, he looked like a person who'd make the century for sure.
No wonder Hitch loved Cary Grant so much. He was the greatest star of them all !
@helen evans l will always miss Cary. Tears still in my eyes, a lump in my throat.
LOL at 4:38 when Cary Grant looks up at the stage, sees (his very good longtime friend) Ingrid Bergman, and says, "Well, hello." Very cute. Lots of class in that room. Thanks for sharing these!
3:36 Hitchcock: “Who’s that???”
Connery: “‘Who’s that,’ he says! IT’S ME, HITCH!”
Haha! 🤣
Cary Grant. The most handsome man to ever grace the screen.
That Cary Grant was one FINE looking man. 👌🏼 💞
This world didn't deserve stars like Cary Grant, or Ingrid Bergam. Magical screen performers and amazingly kind people.
Cary Grant, who was 75 when this AFI tribute was filmed, looks as though he could have walked onto a sound stage at Paramount or Warner Bros. and started filming a new Hitchcock movie. Shortly after this show, Grant began to tour with his one man show, "A Conversation With Cary Grant" in various cities for the rest of his life.
@Trevor Rogert TY
The stars who assembled in that room that night……never to be repeated, ever.
Sir Sean Connery and Cary Grant pretty much stole the show with their few words. 😄
Cary Grant is one of few men who got better looking as he aged gracefully.....he was all class, thay don't make them like him any more!!😎
I agree, he was like a fine wine, he was so handsome
"Who's that, he says -- it's me Hitch!" LOL. Classic.
Working with Cary Grant and Hitchcock on a film an actress commented that they both had a gentlemanly style and class about their work that made them very much alike in many ways.
Hitchcock basically changed the way suspense movies were made. He didn’t need blood and guts to make an impact, just great actors with great dialogue. He did all the rest. Even the best directors today recognize his genius.
Currently reading Hitch's biography. He hated attention and this clip displays it so well. Nice to see Cary sitting next to the great man. Quite right!
You know Cary is a Legend when you see a video that is supposed to be a tribute to a... Legend, and Cary shines (among a series of... Legends) in a Class on his own.
I thought 007 was looking pretty good lol
What a treat to watch this epic mic toss! And to end with the inimitable Cary Grant, just after the incredible Judith Anderson… 🤩
God ,Even Tippi Hedren was gracious enough to appear.
The greatest assemblage of grace, class and talent you could ever put together.
in the end..the star was Cary Grant...and i like it
I just watched North By Northwest again and found this. A classic!

"It's me H!!!"
Sean Connery is such a boss.
Great Connery! RIP (today).
@@skannadimeana and with all the fear mongering propaganda it was completely overlooked!
The man is almost 80 years old, very tired, and in constant pain. They all know that he loves and appreciates every one of them, and he doesn't need to smile and wave to prove that. Did you see the clip where he accepts the award? He can barely stand up, and Cary Grant has to help him. Hitch is being anything but a jerk here - he's having the time of his life, which he knows very well is almost over.
You are totally right. I did not look at the other comments.
So correct...
Which is why Grant's speech was brief.
All those stars and to see Hitch looking so old and what brings me to tears? to see that Mr. Cary Grant is sitting next to him...What an honour. It looks to me that they were good friends and had a lot of respect to each other. I don't know how to describe it. But it is just... great!
Hitchcock has been quoted saying cary grant was the only actor he truly loved.
Hitchcock movies are the greatest. Incomparable.
Cary Grant- class act. He just looks awesome even as an old man
I've been lucky enough to meet a few celebrities in my life, based on dumb luck and being a journalist (now mostly retired). I got the opportunity to meet a few actors, athletes and a couple of U.S. Presidents. The most memorable is probably Cary Grant around the early 1980s. I called out to him at a trade show. He turned around to answer me and waved. I couldn't speak. He strolled over. I took out my notebook and, with pen in hand, pointed to it. He thought I wanted an interview. He said, "Not now, maybe later!" He shook my hand, gave me that Cary Grant grin and strolled away. I wanted an autograph for my wife! Cary Grant is still her favorite actor. I'm still in trouble. (LOL!)
@@miraclebigevent142 Holy smokes! Terrific story! Cary literally had friends from all walks of life. He was quite a guy.
@@miraclebigevent142 lol! Well, she's married to you and he loved men anyway!

Bullshit
Stop fibbing Pinocchio 🤥
I really like how they speak. Their accents and their dictions. Unlike today.
So many actors an actresses that came into our home or local theatre an now so many have passed .
Cary Grant , was a favorite of mine . The movies I grew up with are no more , it was a era that so MANY will never see again . We miss those days yet we have modern tv An you tube , to bring those times back with us all .
Rip Cary Grant and All of that era ,
Can’t agree anymore
I still love them although I know they passed away many years ago
Especially Cary Grant who I love the most😭
Ingrid Bergman, on being asked to participate in this tribute, said, "Why do they always wait until it's too late."
Cary Grant has an amazing tan!
Cary Grant was the epitome of the Hollywood leading man. Weird that he came from Bristol which is just down the road from me.
ingrid bergman and cary grant were pure class. great to see other actors respecting cary grant. the moment when cary smiled at ingrid 4:39 was so eternally beautiful
'Notorious' is a masterpiece and they are the best, most erotic couple ever on screen, in my view. I'm surprised more people don't mention them as their favourite screen couple or favourite love story. Both great, amazing actors, both individually and together.
@@allegory6393 Ingrid Bergman was a bigger tramp and slept around more than most people in Hollywood.
i loved that too and when ingrid smiled back too. wonderful.
I love how they took turns introducing each other.
They should always do that.
I wonder why they don't do it today,I think people would really love it.
Wow, what a collection of stars from Hollywoods Golden Era gathered under one roof later in life.
When giants walked among us...
Now you have a giant Orange
Can you imagine a Hitchcock film with a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, starring Cary Grant and Sean Connery as gentlemen jewel thieves, with Audrey Hepburn as a co-star and a score by Bernard Hermann. What a picture!
That would have been a great movie!
You can hear a hush come over the room when Sean Connery introduces Dame Judith Anderson -- one of the greatest actresses of all time.
Thank you for saying that, a truly great actress.
That gasp at 3:52. It's totally understandable after all she was fantastic as Danvers.
Hitchcock was obviously not in good health at the time of his AFI Life Achievement award, and he passed away the following year. Sean Connery, the quintessential James Bond, had a favorable experience working with Hitch in Marnie in 1964; there was serious discussion regarding Connery starring in a new Hitchcock film, called The Short Night, at the time of the director's death. Cary Grant, who looked wonderful at age 75, was Hitchcock's favorite male actor, starring in four of the most iconic Hitchcock films, Suspicion, Notorious, To Catch A Thief, and North By Northwest.
Jimmy Stewart didn't do too bad in Hitch's movies either.
Never been so happy to see so many old people together that all are legends gathered together
Cary Grant was actually offered the AFI Lifetime Award, but was very shy about making acceptance speeches etc in public and so declined it. Shame, but true to himself! A genius all the same!
So much class and talent gathered in one room! - it takes your breath away...
How is it that AFI missed Cary Grant when it was handing out life achievement awards in those first years??
He was offered, but declined, it. He was really uncomfortable making speeches in public. Gregory Peck (then head of the American Academy) had to encourage him for weeks apparently before he accepted the Lifetime Oscar. Shame - he really deserved it.
I've heard that even if some awardees refuse to have a televised banquet, they still get awarded by the AFI.
Cris Guia
No, one of the requirements of the AFI award is that you have to be present. That's why Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn ever received it. They refused to attend.
TheTerryE You're probably right, that's why their names aren't on the list of past awardees. That's too bad. These banquets happen to be fundraising efforts, too, to raise money for film preservation and maintaining film archives.
so many hollywood legends in just 5 minutes, amazing!
How I wish I looked like Cary Grant x
che uomo meraviglioso! ed il sorriso che si scambiano con Ingrid Bergman è commovente...
1:14 Norman Lloyd is still alive as of 2020. He's 104 years old!

Considering how unpleasant he reputedly was, this tribute is incredible. So full of love and warmth and, of course, admiration. True mark of a master whose genius outshone his social inadequacies.
Thank you, Dame Judith Anderson. She looked fabulous.
Wow Ingrid Bergman.
WoW! What a way to show and share respect. Lovely.
Wow, Teresa Wright has the same voice than in Shadow of a Doubt. What a lovely lady !
What a Treasure to see all these old film Greats! Amazing to see that in 1979 people still had Class and dressed appropriately. Most of the speakers were well in their 80s and 90s. Amazing to see how attractive they still were.
Watched N x NW last night for the first time ever and I loved every single second ; definitely my favorite Hitchcock film so far.
Sooo many great names in one place...There is no need for word...The respect is in the air...
I love it at 3:37 when Sean Connery is introduced and Hitch turns to Cary Grant and asks, "Who's he?"
in one word, this video was CLASS
Great to see this magical evening preserved on film - and that so many greats were there to honor Mr. Hitchcock!
It was so wonderful seeing all those outstanding stars. Alfred didn't even crack a smile.
by this time in his life, he was in quite pain as he only lived another 11 months after this tribute!
In the end the biggest applause was for Cary Grant who had the honour of sitting next to Hitchcock.
Only Vera Miles and Tippi Hedren still alive now i believe.
All Those Great Actors and the Great Edith head wow was great to watch .THANK YOU FOR POST IT
Incredible all I can say
This was shot on 7 March 1979, just a year before his death.
Wow, what a sequence of stars...
Of all his stars Hitch was the greatest star.
NORMAN LLOYD
OMG YES
Agree Cary Grant was the greatest, most entertaining star of the 20th century - bar none.
Hitch looked so happy to be there
Classy people
So many great film people
I cant believe Tippi Hedren turned up after all the trouble she had with Hitchcock . Not recognising Connery was hilarious , would not be surprised if that was intentional though LOL
This ceremony was held on the 7th of March, 1979.
I frequented the Alfred Hitchcock pub by Epping Forest in London several times during my illustrious drinking career!
Enjoying the show
love the way hitch looks totally unimpressed throughout this!
3:37 "Who is he?" Haha too good!
He is Sean Connery, first James bond, born Scottish, another Scottish beautiful actress Caterina zeta Jones. Fr.incredible india.
Kulavoor Jagadish actually CZJ is a Welsh actress
Marnie is, unregarded all his other beautiful movies, most probably Alfred and his wife's most subtle films that ever hit any screen around the world. Thanks to the Master and his - as I came to know - Muse or wife for this outstanding contribution.
So true ....
Edith Head had one line to say and still had to read it all off a piece of paper
love Hitch
It's delightful that Cary Grant leaned over to advise Hitchcock that Sean Connery, who worked with the director at the height of his James Bond fame, was presenting a tribute to the honoree. Grant was originally considered for the Bond role but wouldn't commit to a series. Tippi Hedren, Connery's Marnie co-star, looks great.
Grant considered himself too old for the part.
Thanks!
@Pippin76 I think it is because of the great casting and the small town flavor. Teresa Wright and Joseph Cotten are amazing in this movie and the supporting cast is wonderful.
Shame legends like Cary Grant or even Katharine Hepburn were never awarded AFI life achievement awards
I think they declined it...few were more deserving...Paul Newman & Marlon Brando should have also been offered also...
Is that fashion designer at 2:24 the inspiration for the fashion designer in The Incredibles? She looks very similar.
Yes indeed.
Once told by an interviewer, "Everybody would like to be Cary Grant," Grant is said to have replied, "So would I."
Sean ever Beauty!
I agree laurieheartsdcx...there was a lot of class in that room.
I truly miss Classic Hollywood.
Damn the old voice, classical glory
Who’s that? LOL Loved Connery’s reaction.
WOW. Mrs Danvers (REBECCA) got such a huge ovation. She almost stole that movie from Joan Fontaine
tunde818 She is probably the greatest villain on screen
tunde818
I was captured by her acting in Rebecca and of course her body-language !
She stole a lot of scenes in Laura as well as The Ten Commandments too
@@billolsen4360 yes Memet (ten commandments)
hitchcock was a genious.
Bristol Englands finest son .
Wasn’t he just, love you Cary❤️🌹
exactly!!! and not to mention her countless p/a with pat hitchcock!
In a room full of beautiful people, the most beautiful was Vera Miles...
Yes
So many talents in the same room. Today, in a Oscar ceremony, we can see perhaps ten.
I am so in love with Vera Miles! Great to see her at 2:48. I ADORED her in those John Ford westerns she made. Nothing against Kim Novak but if only Vera had been in VERTIGO as originally planned! And you jumped into the bay! I'll bet you're a wonderful swimmer! Did he teach you? Did he train you? You were a very apt pupil! I LOVED you so, Vera!
Vera is still with us as of June 2022...
