Mitchum was starting a movie with Loretta Young. After he swore, she approached him with a can. "What's this for?" he asked. She said it was her swearing can. She disapproved of bad language and any time anyone on the set swore, they had to put a quarter in the can (the money going to charity). Mitchum pulled out a $5 bill and put it in the can and said, "That should cover it for today."

Mitchum never lost his cool or his humble ways. His understated acting was unbelievable. His "Cape Fear" role was one of the most menacing I've ever seen...and the movie Night of the Hunter is breathtaking. His sons had said a number of times that their dad was the actors, actor and cared nothing for the spotlight he was a serious actor. And then went home at the end of his filming.

He was ill with emphysema & lung cancer...it usually goes also to the brain. He’d lost a lot of weight & that’s why his glasses look too big. He probably figured, “why bother fixing them.”
I suppose you might say that those are the awkward kind of glasses that older folks sometimes adopt when they honestly don't care whether they look fashionable or not, I guess because the larger lenses give them a wider field of vision, maybe? Not sure. But Bob, under the glasses, was a man among men, a fine actor, & was still quite handsome here near the end of his life.

I adore him. He had a look. A charisma. A certain way he carried himself that was so unique. I saw a pic of him when he was young. Like late teenager. On the beach in a bathing suit. Holy smokes he was gorgeous. So handsome and the biggest shoulders I've ever seen. Barrel chested with a tiny waist. He looked better then a Greek god.
That’s a great photo! I know the one you mean! Hot stuff, he was! 🔥
Mitchum's tailor did a better fitting job than his optician did.
He looks like the emphysema & lung cancer had taken its toll on him here...he’s lost a lot of weight, his glasses no longer fit & by this time, as usually happens, he may have developed brain cancer, like my dad...so..that’s perhaps why they finally decided they better give him this award! High time! He looks like he’s having a lot of trouble finding his words...also like the dementia my mother had. I’m so glad they finally decided...”we’ll..,it’s about time we honor this man!”
Best male movie star ever.
Very true Robert Mitchum only married once in his life and didn't cheat on her. That is especially a remarkable quality in him working in Hollywood and being faithful to his wife. You don't find that very often especially in Hollywood or in the business of entertainment.
Why?! He was one of the RARE straight male Hollywood actors. Just did it for money.
He cheated endlessly…he’d be the first to admit it.
The first movie I ever saw was "White Witch Doctor," followed by "Track of the Cat". He was my Dads fav movie star. I was 5yrs at the time. But I became a big fan myself as I grew up. He should of received more awards, But I'm sure it didn't bother him, that he didn't. A real star, unlike todays overpaid , got it all but know nothing, but think their opinion is worth hearing!
The first movie of Robert Mitchums
I remember seeing was Thunder Road. I was 12 years old. And he was my fathers favorite actor,
And he became my favorite as well,
I loved your comment.
Thank you,
Angie Hicks
Humility...... A lost art these days
Yes one the best
so handsome when he was young
Mr FILM NOIR .. they were his best
Mr Caine must have loved hearing that.
Where are the Robert Mitchums? The real men. The amazing men.
I just don't think Bob ever gave a fuck - you can tell just by his improvised, laconic speech.
No, no! I’m so glad they finally decided...”well, it’s about time we honor this fine actor!”
Monsieur Mitchum vous avez enchanté des millions de gens de part le monde par votre talent et les nombreux classiques ou vous avez joué.
I’d take a sloshed Robert Mitchum over most all of today’s actors.
He looks like the emphysema & lung cancer had taken its toll on him here...he’s lost a lot of weight, his glasses no longer fit & by this time, as usually happens, he may have developed brain cancer, like my dad...so..that’s perhaps why they finally decided they better give him this award! As fine as they come in the acting world.
michael caine was curiously apt to present the award to mitch.both men had identical builds as did victor mature.the odd fact came to light when michael was making 40s private eye thriller peeper a.k.a deadfall.his suit was the one worn by mitchum in farewell my lovely.michael recalled it was still warm! they were shooting the last scenes of it on the queen mary while we were waiting to shoot scenes on the same boat for our movie!mitch took it off and i put it on! they got their moneys worth out of the suit as mitch famously complained when fitted with it as he found a label in it.it had last been worn by victor mature in 1949 in kiss of death.mitch said they are so cheap theyve got me wearing vic matures secondhand suit!
😮😂 I can surely see him saying that!
Humphrey Bogart, Cary Grant, Robert Mitchum, in that league
thunder road was his baby. he made the movie.
a drunkard...love the fella...he loved his life...how could he not...a promiscuous drunkard...how fucking sweeeet....literally.
A film noire icon....and a fine man....
Never knew he played snooker.
He was the Real Deal, a mensch.
Obviously he was sincere and gracious, but it was just a little painful to watch.
Was not healthy, but right here, he is boxed!
No! He looks like the emphysema & lung cancer had taken its toll on him here...he’s lost a lot of weight, his glasses no longer fit & by this time, as usually happens, he may have developed brain cancer, like my dad...so..that’s perhaps why they finally decided they better give him this award! He deserved it sooner!!”
".....I am truly, honestly, sincerely....drunk!....truly!"
A SHAME HE NEVER GOT AN OSCAR AS WELL AS GLENN FORD AND RICHARD WIDMARK !!!!!
In 1998 when Jack Nicholson won the Oscar, he said it was for...and he named a bunch of greats that died the year before, without recognition & one of these named was Bob Mitchum! 😊 I thought Nicholson had a lot of class to remember them & saying it was for them!
He was a fine actor. Cape Fear, Out of The Past, The Night of The Hunter, The Sundowners, Farewell My Lovely, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, no poor actor could have pulled off those roles.
He was too old and fat to play Philip Marlowe.
The sexiest, most handsome, alpha male to ever walk the Earth....
Even on stage here he's totally baked on POT (starting from age 13). BUT boy what an actors actor. Just finished reading his bio..what a great read.
jay Munton Watch Home from the Hills! Excellent movie!
Reading that bio now. You're right: it's great.
You're an idiot....he's not high. He's 75 and chill.
Highly unlikely! I’m so glad they finally decided...”we’ll..,it’s about time we honor this man!”
love him......wasn't that his son James that helped in to the stage....still looks image of his dad
It looked like Christopher to me.
❤️
His glasses make up half his face.
Mitchum crapped his pants and they took back the award.
i think robert was a 'bit' inebriated..., &, as much as i've always loved his acting, i think he would never have been the star that he was if he'd worn those glasses in the movies! LOL. i loved his singing, as well.
I highly doubt that! I’m so glad they finally decided...”well, it’s about time we honor this man!” He should’ve gotten it sooner!
Tellement triste de voir cet homme merveilleux si diminué . RIP
He couldn't sing.
He's clearly bagged - but who cares, he's Robert Mitchum and there was a guy who lived life on his own terms. Back when actors of his type were "men".
@Stone Wallace Agreed. At least he seems a nice drunk, plenty that aren’t!
@@EmilyHartley25989 no he’s not! Geez! He was dying of emphysema & lung cancer, for Heaven’s sakes! 🤦🏻♀️
Robert Mithum what an actor.John Wayne fuck of he walked through movies sorry but he did.Mitchum was great.
Mitchum walked through some of his movies too, when he didn't respect the script or the director, but when fully engaged he could (and did) steal scenes from a John Wayne that was giving his best. And that wasn't easy.
he's loaded
Or high. Always. And the first to admit it. 😉
@@jennymacallan9071 or both. 😎
Nice.
same outfit he wore on night of the hunter.
😅😅😅😅😅😅
He was better than all them
They had no patience for him
What a room of fakes
Why didn’t Michael Caine learn and practice his introduction first?
You can tell he is reading it for the first time from a teleprompter
How disrespectful
Again, Robert is above the men in the room
I will pray for America. Please pray for me. God Bless you.
A lovely speech. Was he drunk here, or ill?
He looks like the emphysema & lung cancer had taken its toll on him here...he’s lost a lot of weight, his glasses no longer fit & by this time, as usually happens, he may have developed brain cancer, like my dad...so..that’s perhaps why they finally decided they better give him this award! High time! He looks like he’s having a lot of trouble finding his words...also like the dementia my mother had. I’m so glad they finally decided...”well, it’s about time we honor this great actor & man!”
@@cynthiaennis3107 Thank you,
I think he sounds like Alan Rickman
a bit sloshed here, i'd say, bob...magnificent in one of his least known roles- as the husband in david lean's ryan's daughter...
John Wayne couldn't shine this man's shoes.
Yes, he was rubbish at shining shoes. Lucky he took up acting!
Mitchum did have more range, as an actor.
@@waynej2608 Robert mitchum could have been any of John Wayne's Roles quiet Man the searchers Fighting Seabees Rio bravo which it would have done those parts way better than John Wayne thunder road enemy below cape fear thunder road John Wayne could have never done those parts mitchum way better John Wayne overrated
@@seanfitzpatrick4730 Yes, I totally agree. Mitchum was the better actor, more versatile. This is not to suggest that Wayne was bad, as he had some impressive moments. But, as I said, his range wasn't as broad as Mitchum's.
Why are those glasses wearing Robert Mitchum?
Bob was a Cynic, he never really looked at acting as a "respectable" craft...Brando was the same way
He described himself as a journeyman which means he accepted his craft and recognised acting was a job like any other. That doesn't make him a cynic in the modern idiom.
/Yes, he was great. But I also believe that when you get down to it, he was just glad to get out of wages and be an actor because it was easy for him. And I do think here he was pissed as a pillow. He just didn't care. I wish I was more than Mitch. Praise for you, my dear friend. You didn't care but you were wonderful!
Max Cady. Harry Powell.💪
Notice Michael Caine deftly pull him forward on the stage with the handshake, nice move, Mitchum half lost it on that last step up. That, unfortunately, is the end stage of a life of chain smoking and drinking.
The "v" in your name should stand for "vagina".
Worst acceptance speech I’ve ever heard, but what a great actor; handsome, bad boy image which we gals find appealing, sexy, smart - RIP
He doesn't put 2 words together that make any sense.... What was his problem....Age, drugs, alcohol...
I love him and all of his film work, but he should have passed on the wine until after his speech.
He was only a one-note actor.
Those glasses should be weighting some serious pounds.
