I couldn't believe this mad man that scared me when I saw him playing football when I was a kid, was later selling flowers. Stunning to see him with flowers in his hand and a smile.
Jay Company I seen him play, also seen him introduce Jack Youngblood in Canton with my Son ... Youngblood signed the left horn Dryer the right on my Sons helmet... priceless!
As a boy I read Jerry Kramers book Instant Replay several times. Very good book which was a diary of their 1967 championship season. I was born in 1967 and played right guard.
I met him and his wife on vacation in La Paz Mexico in 1982. I was fresh out of college and they were staying in the room next to the one occupied by my girlfriend and myself. They were some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in my entire life. We had a great time together and he left a lasting impression on me

When we were kids in the 60-70’s Olson was our football idol, later when I stated working for the film industry I met him on “ Little House on the Prairie” @ MGM…a bit intimidating the man is huge, but a nice, gentle giant.
Mr Olsen was one of a kind. There was no one before him like him, and no one since. A once in a lifetime mixture of thoughtful intellectual, kindly gentleman, and fierce competitor. Lovely man, lovely legacy.
His statue and mission statement plague, at USU in Logan, is one of the most inspiring things I've seen on my College Football Quest. Merlin the Magnificent indeed!
This man was truly an inspiration to me. My High School Football coach once compared me to him. Not that I was anywhere near his talent but he played whistle to whistle like I always tried. What I mean was he played the game till the whistle blew then he got up and back to the huddle. No after whistle garbage. What a great and inspiring man. i played the same way.
Loved him as a player, but also for his philosophy on football and life. He had a great mind...one of the most cerebral players ever. He had pretty much everything you'd want in a DT. Big, strong, quick, and consistent. One of my idols along with Deacon Jones.
Never missed a game in a tough position to play. If you're on either side of the line, you're gonna get hit every single play. So for him to not miss one game in 15 years is legendary
I had a door sized huge poster of Merlin Olsen on My Door and head butted on every game day in High School where I played left side Defensive End and learned ALOT from watching Merlin... My definite football Hero .... Amazing Man !
Merlin Olsen a dominant Defensive Tackle of the 60's & 70's that played on one of the 5 top Defensive Lines of that era maybe No#1? But the Fearsome Foursome, The Purple People Eaters, The Packers ,The Bears & Detroit front four! The Rams & Cardinals games were a must watch game on Sunday afternoons! Merlin Olsen vs Conrad Dobler were battle royals! I heard a rumor that one game in Cali were Dobler was leg whipping Merlin so much that Merlin's father sought out Conrads father in the stands to confront him about his son's style of play! The argument got so heated they got into a fight! Now that's football! Merlin Olsen and the Rams were a great team to watch! Because of their Defensive Dominance! Merlin was a Beast! on the field and a Great Man off the field! I have never heard him beat his chest or run his mouth! Like my father has taught me be careful around a man that is quiet or looks sleepy! Still waters run deep and let sleeping Dog's lie! As an old man now? I can now say I've seen some of the Greatest Football Players of any Era! And it's true they just don't make'em like they used too!
First of all, I'm glad that Jerry Kramer finally made the Hall of Fame. I always wondered who he must've offended to have been kept waiting so long. So congratulations to Mr. Kramer the newly-minted Hall of Famer!! (Yes, I know, official induction takes place next month) I hate that it took massive lobbying by three HOF running backs (Brown, Mitchell, Kelly) he blocked for before Gene Hickerson, Kramer's teammate on the NFL All-Decade team for the 1960s, was inducted. If I remember correctly, he couldn't even give a speech because he was in serious physical decline. I'm pretty sure he died shortly afterward. It's great to hear Kramer speak about Merlin Olsen. When he talks about the Olsen head slap he visibly winces like he's reliving a nightmarish experience. Must've been overpowering. And odd for me to hear about because the Deacon Jones head slap was legendary. He's explained the now outlawed technique in NFL Films. But to hear that off-the-field gentle giant Merlin used that method as well was surprising. But it does go along with Olsen saying he could separate what he did on the field from his every day life. And what Merlin Olsen did on the field was first-rate, phenomenal, and Hall of Fame worthy!!
That's some start but you're missing one more defensive end. How about Deacon Jones or Bruce Smith? I would be temped to swap out Page for mean Joe Greene but hard choice.
Your right it took a long time for him to enter the HOF . There might have bee jealiousicy because of his Book and the naming of the deodorant Right Guard . I actually got a free Paper back of his book Right Guard when buying the deodorant Right Guard . I also remember him doing commercials for the deodorant .
Jerry Kramer admitting that he prepared more for Merlin than anyone is amazing in of itself. Jerry Kramer was known as "the preparer" in his day and was either practicing of preparing for a player. There are so many players to prepare for and Jerry Kramer's wife always was frustrated that he never prepared for her. She had to imagine he was someone else
Great player of astounding physical strength and intelligence. His football IQ exceeded his actual Intelligence Quotient. That is impressive. In terms of power, this video shows three men trying to block him. Olsen is never displaced or off his feet. Astounding!!! Fourteen Pro Bowls in 15 seasons. Quality and longevity. The real star of The Fearsime Foursome. No matter how much ink was etched over Deacon Jones.
In my opinion the Fearsome Foursome is the greatest defensive line ever assembled. The steel curtain gets more notoriety for obvious reasons but they weren't as good. There were three hall of famers on that line compared to one in Pittsburgh.
for my money the best defensive tackle ever to play football. if I could build the ultimate defensive line, Merlin Olsen is on that list. no one was better. some close but not at his level.
Bob Lilly was the best. Olsen himself said it was fun to play beside Lilly in the NFC-AFC pro bowl games because Lilly always drew the double teams and allowed him one on one blocking.
Merlin, what a great guy, loved him as a football player, an announcer, and an actor. My whole family loved "Little House on the Prairie". I was just doing a personal Merlin Olson tribute today. GOD Bless you all... looking forward in seeing Merlin in Heaven. Amen...
I played Merlin’s son in his final series on NBC called “Aaron’s Way”. To his fans, just know he was as solid a man as he was a football player. He was gentle, kind, and a terrific father figure. He is missed!
Simply Great, Coming from a Seahawks fan (We supposed to hate the rams 24/7) But Merlin.....Jesus was this dude consistent. Should have made the pro bowl his last year and have a Super Bowl Ring, but he decided to stay in L.A and not chase rings.
if you look at deacon jones at no. 15 they show him sacking the qb but notice the middle of the line it took three guys blocking merlin and deacon one on one with the tackle just check it out. jones was a beast but merlin was a big part of his success.
Great player and definitely deserves to be #26 but I’ll take Reggie Kinlaw who is the most underrated NT in NFL history. Merlin had an offensive lineman’s mentality. Kinlaw was an undersized unblockable NT who could rush the passer and make plays sideline to sideline
The fearsome foursome, the purple people eaters, the steel curtain, the monsters of the midway and the doomsday defense such cool names nowadays it the legion of boom how pathetic.
High school line coach's would benefit by study these players. How the kept they their feet under them and moving. "Balanced". Kept their eyes open. How they react to what they see and feel.
Nothing against Merlin Olsen but there's no way he's rated higher than Alan Page ( #43 greatest player). Alan Page was league MVP as a defensive tackle. still to this day one of the greatest achievements in NFL history. Before there was ESPN and highlight hour on TV and etc, a defensive tackle was MVP. Page has to be ahead of Olsen.
