I ask them to test them before I leave the store. They have a rig to spin and test alternators. Saves on the do overs and gas for the trip back. I appreciate your content.
I worked at a truck shop years ago and we rebuilt starters and alternators in-house. Each unit was run-in on a test bench prior to installation and we were able to mitigate any component failures. Starters were tested for locked and running current draw and alternators were tested for full output, ripple and regulated voltage if applicable.
Did you do any tests at that shop to show if all the bushings were installed? As a meer teen I worked on my uncles Chevy and upon opening the starter that barely worked I discovered the remanufacturing shop did not put any bushing in one end. Oops Armature was dragging all over
A freind of mine picked up a rebuilt alternator to put on his son's car. He got it at one of the Big Box Auto Parts stores had them check it before he left. They ended up checking four of them before they finally found one that was good.
Fix your old jack. I had the 3 ton version of your jack and got it about the same time you got yours (as a Christmas gift from dad I think). It stopped working like you describe yours as doing about 5 years ago. I love that jack so I kept it, thinking I would have it repaired. I finally got around to googling for repair parts and found them. I think the seal kit was about $30. It was super easy to install the seals and now It works like new again.
Kenny, you really hit on something when you said that your music "influenced" you. How true that is and that is why people should realize the music of today and how it may influence their children. We have to part ways on our music preference, though, Kenny. Country all the way here. lol Now back to being a mechanic, I hate having to do a job twice because of a bad part and the parts house pays nothing for the labor. GRRRRR!
Pine Hollow Diagnostics had a Hyundai vehicle that had repeated failures of alternators and it turned out to be high resistance in the negative cable where it meets the frame. He cleaned up all connections of the negative cable and it corrected the problem. Keep this in mind if you have repeated failures of the Alternator.
That's right! I remember watching Ivan work on that car. He is a master at figuring out hard to solve problems. Especially electrical ones. Always uses the scope!
Some auto parts chain stores have a quality control and passed inspection tag on the part but your experience calls that into question. You have a lot of patience for a situation like that. I check standing voltage on a battery before buying one and the.newest one on the rack. Always great videos!!
Old punk rocker / indy shop owner, and second you 100%! The music, to this day, is always saying the same to me! Thanks for helping the world with their car troubles! I do my best too!
A couple years ago my daughter had a KIA RIO, the alternator went out. I started trying to remove it from the top, ended up removing from the bottom. I got it out the bottom after removing a few things and loosening and moving the Rack and pinion steering. When I got it out and the Autoparts store said it was a good alternator, I told my daughter if she doesn't want to get a new one she will have to take it to a shop. What testing I did told me it was bad. I put the new alternator in, she didn't have any more problems with it. I did the work on a hot day, on the ground in my front yard and it took about 3 hours to get it out and 45 minutes to put it in. She got another car about 2 years later and sold the RIO, I was kind of happy about that, I worked on the RIO several times. It ran well but seemed to keep having problems.
Rebuilt means they replaced the broken part and nothing more. Remanufactured means they go through the entire starter or alternator replacing all wear parts like brushes, bendix drives and internal regulators. Thats why you have 1yr, 2yr and 5 yr warranties. Often a Remanufactured dealer part is your best bet. 40 years ago I sold auto parts and the failure rate was 4 bad out of 5 units on the shelf. Crazy then crazy now.
From Leo: Something has changed, we never had troubles like this in the past. It used to be a straight forward job. I never buy the cheap rebuilds, I get the best they have. Even spending a ton of extra money, I have been burned by alternators more and more. Now they are a 50/50 chance that you will lose money when you do it the 2nd time for free. Of course most customers think it is the mechanics fault, especially if they pay a tow charge.
I knew there was more than just your wrenching that I liked. Not surprisingly since we are the same age and from the North East we have the same taste in Music. Don't forget Agnostic Front, Fear, and Dead Kennedy's on the punk side and Iron Maiden, Dio, Motorhead (RIP Lemmy), and Megadeth in the Metal lane.. Also love: The Cult, Killing Joke, Bad Brains, Love & Rockets, New Order, Front 242 in the Alternative genre. Intellifix tends to have better information on specific repairs than Alldata in my experience. Alternators are notorious for DOA and I always have them test the 'new' alt in the store if I'm not having it delivered.. It's actually amazing how high the failure rate is of parts from any of these parts chains. I'd say in the 30-40% range. South Main Auto? Eric O. is no they unless you are including Mrs. O - Vanessa - Queen of the front of the house! Eric O. is the reigning King of RUclips mechanical channels. Many have come and gone and some newer channels (Rainman Ray) are hitting it out of the park. But nobody can touch SMA for quality, quantity , and entertainment value. Although Kenny, you will be there with them (in numbers) very soon I believe! Keep on wrenching!
I wouldn't call it an epic failure if you end up learning from it. Learned a hard lesson yrs ago. Changed the fuel pump on my 89 camaro, did all the work of dropping the tank ect. Made the mistaken of getting the cheaper pump. Got everything together, car ran for 2 days and the new pump failed. Tore it all apart, took it back and got the oem pump. Never had an issue afterwards. By the way, I feel the same way about country music lol.
Way back in the last century (70's) I bought a rebuilt alternator from Checker Auto (don't think they exist any more). I was young and didn't have much money, so the rebuilt alternators fit my budget. Then took a long trip from Missouri to Arizona. On that trip I had to change that alternator 3 times before I got one that would last. It was a real 'pita'. I got where I could change that alternator in about 10 minutes, even in the dark sometimes. Lesson learned, I now tend to shy away from "rebuilt" auto parts. The extra $$ are well worth the time and aggravation from dealing with low cost replacement parts.
I've turned wrench for about 27 years and have given up on Auto Zone products had way to many issues with their alternator and starters they maybe life time warranty but don't last. My mato has always been do it right the first time. I personally only use Napa alternator and starters may pay a little more but your getting what you pay for quality.
Agree, I'd never buy anything from AutoZone, O'Reilly's, etc beyond pads and rotors. Been burned by junk too many times not by them but by similar stores. Napa or the junkyard for important electric or electronic parts.
Ain’t that the life of a mechanic lol, we’re the same way. At the shop we have every tool imaginable (we work on everything from cars to semi’s to excavators) but at home we barely have the tools to change a tire.
Sometimes it's worth waiting and ordering a good brand (ie. Denso, Bosch, Valeo) new unit or reman. I've never had long term luck with parts store brands.
Ya know a good floor jack is those 70s Sears jacks painted green and labelled 1 1/2 ton. Made in Japan and was the first interaction of the common jacks. Very good quality jack.
I had that happen to me with a starter and then a few months later the alternator on my old f-150. Napa replaced both parts . Now I test before replacing . Doing things twice in 30 below is not pleasant .
I bought a remanufactured/rebuilt alternator from a reputable parts supplier and lasted less than a week!! Had to be towed home. They exchanged it no problem but cost me time and a tow bill! Ford focus had to unbolt rear motor mount and take out from under the car!!!
I am 66 and love our old time rock and roll! Good move by the way! We are thinking about leaving Phoenix and moving to NC or Tennessee! Any recommendations in NC towns for retires?
My one battery charger was made by GE around 1950, but still is working, after a few repairs and updates to put charge control in it, to not cook batteries. 3A average charge current. Also go another smaller GE with 1A charge rate, that is fine to keep a battery charged all the time. Modified a welder to make a DC fast charge, up to 50A for 30s, which is enough to bring a battery up to something useful. Issue with the alternator is that the regulator is the wrong type, you have a few different ones that are used, from a plain dumb one that simply acts like an old 1980's alternator, to the more modern ones where the ECU is the thing that provides charge regulation, and varies a PWM signal to control voltage from the alternator, and battery charge. Yes been bitten by this as well, solution was to go to the dealership, and order the exactly right alternator, based on VIN of the vehicle, direct from Korea via the agents. They will give the right part, and i would say your daughter has a failed brush pack on the alternator, worn away. New brushes $1 by me, though for the one I needed a different brush, so bought the cheapest VAG clone, and ripped the brushes out of that.
Hail SMA for the win I too religously watch Mr O & you . Something I always do when I purchase a vehicle is to find a workshop manual either hard copy or digital & that has never failed me.Cheers mate from AUS .(The reason I'm posting just now is the time difference approx 14 hours.)
Quick suggestions on your lighting situation in your garage. They make a screw in bulb replacement that has like 3 adjustable pads ( don't know what else to call them ) every where sells them just pay attention to your brightness. I bought a couple of the Walmart branded ones on clearance and was really impressed with the amount of light they give and also the fact the pads are adjustable to help aim the light....
Kenny, I love you sharing your knowledge and opinion while shopping at harbor freight. It really helps us. Maybe do this again. Thanks for your channel
i had a temperature related error on the disa on my personal car, changed the thing already twice since i have the car, rebuild it the second time i changed it with a kit that changes out all the plastic chunk with metal. Never in that time i thought it could be faulty electronics, since i extra bought the expensive one from vaico but further diagnosis indeed showed the result, that the electronic is faulty when the temperature increases. lot of headache and disappointment just because of the shit quality from the manufacturer where i all along thought it had to be functioning and searched in different ereas for the defect. now i gotta buy a new disa once again, great.
Wow! That light looks like an exact copy of the Astro Pneumatic 70SL light. Last time I was in Harbor Freight, they also had a handful of copycat Knipex pliers. Not sure how they get away with it, seems like the designs would be protected.
Even us lowly DIY driveway mechanics have hit this snag. I had to replace my son's alternator twice because the first one from the part store only lasted about a week before it crapped out. Like you - there is NO ROOM on the pontic G5 - had to remove the usual suspects (air intake) but had to remove the engine mount and jack up the motor too.
When I would make a mistake, I would allow myself a bout 30 seconds to feel absolutely stupid over it, then move on. Never hid it, and I always owned whatever I was responsible for, Period. Not looking over my shoulder today, for all that. Thanks, Kenny. You're one of the Good Guys! 💯👍🦾💪👏
Big fan of your channel and longtime subscribers to SMA! Just this past weekend my wife’s 2014 Acura RDX had same failures? Found the Acura shop manual says same thing just remove generator and replace? But it takes removal of motor mount to pull alternator from top? Make sure to check and clean any ground you can touch? Found two with Green and crusty connections! And the one thing I was amazed to find is that these recent Alternator/Generator, can only be tested in the vehicle? Even when rebuilt on a bench the CanBus system controls the charging system. And for the system to check itself it has to be under load at high idle and headlights and AC on to see system charge! I kept thinking the new alternator was bad? But when under load and lights on system charged normally?
If your town has an alternator and starter repair/ overhaul shop, consider going to them . Yes , it cost a little more but should get a quality alternator and more of your money stays in the community.
When you took the Duralast alternator back to Autozone, did they test the new Alternator and did it for sure test bad? If so, did you just exchange the Alternator for another Duralast or get a refund and go somewhere else to get another new Alternator?
Brand new stuff can still be bad. It makes you mad when you go through all that work just to have to do it again. But your good at what you do so it's a piece of cake right.... right🤣🤣 keep doing what you do Kenny awesome content👏👏👏
A big part of he problem is that a large percentage of customers (including some shops) search around for the cheapest parts they can find. To be competitive the marked has responded with a lot of cheap low quality parts. I worked in the auto parts business for many years and I can tell you that it's gotten a lot worse over the last twenty years or so. You can still buy quality parts in most cases but you really have to look for them. It's easy to find crap.
hey hey, Johnny Cash sang a song called Cry, Cry, Cry. I believe it's written for mechanics when we work on rust belt cars and the damn bolts won't come out!!
Did a chrysler v6 alternator... a little difficult to get to the 1 bolt.... Put it together just enough to start and test. Soon as I started the car I had copper glitter everywhere...... It seized .... Turned by hand fine before install. The only one I ever had like that. Brand new outta the box... Not a reman...
I had to replace my alternator and battery a few weeks ago. I knew my battery needed to be replaced. I guess with the bad battery and the 100° temp decided to fry the controller on the alternator.
I don’t buy rebuilds anymore,I just get the new ones, from o’reilys if I want it cheaper. Otherwise it’s Napa. Been screwed way too many times with AutoZone/advance/Napa etc. rebuilt anything.
Hey Kenny, I love your channel, always good content and great explanations. As a former AZ employee, I can confirm that new or rebuilt parts I do not share your musical tastes. I’ve got a few years on you, but I’m slowly becoming able to tolerate Metallica as my hearing fades!
I've had so much trouble with new alternators and starters being bad out-of-the-box, that I make AutoZone test it before I leave the facility. That has saved me many return trips and best of all redoing the job.
@@AmandaHugenkiss2915 Had good luck with AZ Duralast Gold NEW, not reman. NAPA remans are also BBB Industries garbage. They do sometimes carry Denso or Bosch. I don't remember having a problem with the Denso remans. Also the Bando belts are God's gift to belts.
@@1MiketheMechanic anything electrical or electronic I try the junkyard first unless it's a PITA to get to. OEM quality and far far cheaper. Agree on new vs reman where possible
My tundra alternator wasn’t easy to change after changing found out my oreilly new alternator was bad ! Bought one on amazon finally good. Two days later my starter went! Fme!
I had a Larkin floor jack I bought from AutoZone back in the mid 90's and I had to retire it due to leaks and no repair kits available. I could have taken it somewhere and had it rebuilt but it's not cost effective these days. If I could find a seal kit I'd fix it. I got some LED strip lights from Amazon that used in my garage and those things are bright. They aren't super expensive either.
I always purchase brand new OEM alternators and starters ,yes very expensive but there is a reason they last well over 10 years 100,000 miles as the original installed I am not doing this job twice or 3 times in less than 3 years
Alice in Chains,Godsmack ,Rammstein,Dio,Exodus,Suicidal Tendencies,Megadeth,Anthrax,Metallica,Pantera,it motivates you when your working! I have a couple 200 watts IOS bluetooth speakers from Costco! Nice to know you like good music and thx for the videos!
I had three bad ones in one day for my Acura. Fortunately all I had to do each time was pull the wheel, pop the ball joint, jack the engine, remove the axle, remove the alt and remove the bracket just to get the alt out of its hole and reverse procedure. Each time. As for your music LMAO, I get you. If I'm in the mood for some gospel, the group Lamb of God gets it done.🤣If you know you know. Like you, country is my only hell not unless it's the highly offensive Try That In A Small Town by Jason Aldean. Then we're good to go. Best to you.
It's stuff like this that doesn't make me miss the car business at all. If you are flat rate, it would drive you crazy because you only get paid to do the job once and you have to do it multiple times before being done with it. Parts quality should not be this bad, but as long as we keep Mexico and China happy, all is good right?
And another reason I hate front wheel drive vehicles. Everything is all crammed in there with no realistic method to service. Next the service manual will tell you to place vehicle in service mode before starting. Which will include removing fenders, grill, struts, wheel, drive axle, upper and lower control arms, and finally removing the wheel well with a death wheel on an angle grinder.
We've had pretty good luck with Duralast Gold NEW. All the parts store reman house brands are junk and all are BBB Industries. The Denso remans are good if you can get them. Otherwise the dealer or even used.
As Eric O. would say "just cause its new, doesn't mean its good."
Eric O also said, NEW mean Never Ever Worked.
Dr. O has some great one liners!
My own personal term I coined 50 years ago - ' brand new junk '
Props to you Kenny for giving Eric O credit in this vid. I am a fan of both your channels and really appreciate both channel’s content!

I kept thinking the new alternator was bad? But when under load and lights on system charged normally?
Stick with OEM. I've been burned too many times with aftermarket or parts store electrical parts.
If it helps, I tend to check Mr O out on SMA beforehand, just to see if he's ever tackled the same projects lol.
SMA. Love them.
Love Kenny’s Ballard
Gotta fix that oil leak! Pronto.
all that work for a alternator wow, Kenny I have the same charger since the 80's , still use it today.
Brand new stuff can still be bad. It makes you mad when you go through all that work just to have to do it again. But your good at what you do so it's a piece of cake right.... right🤣🤣 keep doing what you do Kenny awesome content👏👏👏
Thanks for the video Kenny, another example that not everything goes as planned all of the time.
I put same brand Gold on a 2016 GMC 3.6 V6 Arcadia.2.6 hrs. Lasted 4 days. Gotta do it again tomorrow
Kenny you doing a great job with the video put the information out 👌👌👌💯💯💯
I had an alternator have a short in it where it would charge at times that was on a 1976 Dodge van.
We have all been there Kenny.
Fix the Jack!!!
Thanks to you...now we know.
Good morning Mr Kenny hope y'all have a great day,
Hey Kenny, I love your channel, always good content and great explanations. As a former AZ employee, I can confirm that new or rebuilt parts
I do not share your musical tastes. I’ve got a few years on you, but I’m slowly becoming able to tolerate Metallica as my hearing fades!
I got my 2 ton off the side of the road 25 years ago .
It bleeds off very slowly.
I've had so much trouble with new alternators and starters being bad out-of-the-box, that I make AutoZone test it before I leave the facility. That has saved me many return trips and best of all redoing the job.
That's a great practice to get into. Thanks for sharing. Keep wrenching 🔧
Don't buy parts like that from AutoZone or the like, ever. I'd either get Napa's best or go to the junkyard.
Thanks for the video Kenny great job 👍❤️❤❤it. Take care of yourself and family and be Blessed.
hope there is a part 2.
Nothing like doing the job twice. Hope you gave the parts store an earful about their junk alternators.
Got 20,000 miles out of Duralast rebuilt alt. on 93 Toyota pickup.
It looks like a gravy job with biscuit wheels to me
On my Hyundai XG350 I pulled the fans off the radiator and was able to extract my alternator front and up.
I always purchase brand new OEM alternators and starters ,yes very expensive but there is a reason they last well over 10 years 100,000 miles as the original installed I am not doing this job twice or 3 times in less than 3 years
Hmmmm called him mater lol you'll have a mater sandwich for lunch lol, love home grown tomatoes 😅😂
I had the same experience except it was on 07 Mazda3.
Three Duralast Gold before a good one that lasted more than 2 months.
Got a Lexus alternator just a couple days ago from Autozone that was bad right out of the box
Good thing it wasn't a Ford alternator, you probably would have to go thru 5/6 alternators to find a good one !!
Thoughts / opinion on Kingbolen S600 about $140? Better to get the model S800 under $190 or a Launch X431 - CRP919X about $400 ?
?
Oh yeah. Heavy Metal
I replaced alt on 06 charger 5.7 hemi and it wasn't any good out of the box about a month ago
Fix that oil leak.
Harbor freight. I get most of my tool from them. Love it.
I like CCR White snake David Bowie old school stuff
Can’t see you in a mosh pit uncle Kenny 😅
