  • Metal riff that uses sliding power chords, plus a variation with some sixteenth note picking. Video includes on-screen tab.
Video starts with the main riff, which is all eighth notes and is based around palm-muted open E and some power chords, then moves to a variation of the riff that has some sixteenth note picking. Then there are some examples of the riffs with different kinds of drum tracks to give an idea of how they might sound with drums. The drum tracks were created in GarageBand and are just some fairly basic grooves; I’m sure a good metal drummer could come up with something much better, but I’ll have to settle for GarageBand ‘drummer’ for now! Finally, there is tab at the end of the video.
I’m not sure exactly which sub-genre this riff would be, it’d probably depend on what the rest of the band would be doing. But I’d see it a thrash metal riff that’d work in a more down-tempo song or part of a song, or maybe a groove metal riff. I’ve been a big thrash metal fan over the years, more so when I was younger, listening heavily to the likes of Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Exodus, Anthrax, Slayer, Sepultura, etc. Also, groove metal bands like Pantera. This riff has a good groove to it at 145bpm, which I think would be lost if dialling the tempo up to 160-180+.
