This is what hip hop was intended to be. A message being spread through music. Not the garbage you hear on the radio. The Roots will always be in my rotation.
This song will always be relevant because it's timeless. It connects with people on a spiritual level because we've all questioned faith, and evil things have been happening since the dawn of time.

every time i work a double shift at my heavy factory job this song plays in my head "i get off work than right back to work again, im probably gonna need to get my head exam" love it.
"If everything is made in China, are we Chinese?" "Weak world economy, stock market toppling." These bars relate to this Corona Virus pandemic so damn much right now 😳 All the lyrics of this song is timeless, most of Black Thought's lyrics are. I bet he's having deep thoughts on this pandemic, I hope he shares those lyrics with us.
Only 1 million views wtf? The Roots make some of the best music out there, but I guess people would rather listen to 2 chainz and Wiz Khalifa telling them about their gold chains and their bitches, because that is so creative. I'm glad that the roots didn't change to make more money, because they could if they wanted to. I've seen them live 3 times and their live performances are so great I'm really glad I got to see them. I don't get the trend in Hip Hop right now that rappers make their lyrics as stupid and bad as possible, it's really not working for me.

Yes! If you like this, be sure to check out the late Keith Edward Elam a.k.a. GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) Album: Jazzmatazz, Vol. 2: The New Reality. Song: "Looking Through the Darkness"
songs like these are classics people know what is being said in the songs instead of listening to the beat lyrics maters in rap songs we need to keep the movenment alive before mixtape, underground wack music take over credit to the roots.
How has this been out for almost 7 years and I'm just now hearing this beautiful song?? I feel like I've been committing a sin every moment I did not hear this wonderful collaboration.
How can this not be one of Hip Hop's greatest songs? Black Thought, hands down pure dope! Like a black prophet, he keeps his ear close to the heart and mind of the street and speakes to those who are awake.
I was in love with this song when it aired on TV when the album first came out. Dear God was my ring tone for almost two yrs. until my phone broke. I'm just now seeing the video for the first time! Wow ! It puts a whole new twist on how I hear the son now. I love this song ! I love this video !
I've been playing this song in my car on loop practically. It's refreshing. The song is written from the point of view of someone questioning why they should have faith in an impotent God, just shy of shaking off the last remnants of dogma. In the end, notice that the chorus omits "But God, I know you have your reasons." I take this to mean that there aren't any reasons to know. The truth is that God isn't there. Not only can't he mind read, he doesn't exist. The blind are leading the blind.
really appreciated reading that comment. good to see more open minded people out there listening to more than just a catchy beat. But what is being said as well. Cheers!
The Roots album this tune originates from, "How I Got Over", is AMAZING. A must-listen before you die. Your life before listening... &Your altered life after listening. The entire album is this good.
The Roots are one of the best groups ever, their entire catalog is legit. I've seen them live a few times back in the 90's and early 2000's, they were amazing. I've been listening to their albums all weekend.
It's 2023, 4am and I woke up with this song playing on my head, Black thought is the greatest mc to ever touch the Mic, they really do make timeless records
Amen, tired of ppl talking about hip hop being dead when there are still groups making real shit- all we can do is support it as much as possible. Radio is what it is, and u couldn't ever find hip hop there, not in the old school, not in the new.
Nat B. Pain is just a monetary sensation of new neurological connections taking hold. What you are describing is Black Thought literally changing the very making of your brain with his poetic and prophetic words. First time I consciously and fully realized that this was happening, I was listening to Tupac... He said "Plus this alcohol increases the chance to be deceased I'm movin you stupid b****es, vicious telekinesis Am I reachin your brain? N**** how can I explain?" - From, "No more pain - All eyez on me". Hip Hop is more powerful than most realize, look around you. Look at what it has done to reality with just passion, poetry, love, hate, truth... It really is everything that encompasses life. This is not a far fetched exaggeration... Embrace the pain, it's growth. Be blessed. No! More Pain! 😉
Not a coincidence the cross section of people who get in the cab. The ending is tough. Very well done. This is why I've been a fan of these guys since 1994.
+cool89 I'm a atheist but I can still enjoy music with religious content, like DMX - Lord Give me a sign or Yelawolf ft. Eminem - Best Friend etc. I still appreciate a good song even if I don't think God exists. And I don't think this song is just about God it's about society and where we're headed. If you don't believe in God you can still think that things are headed in the wrong direction and try to change them or at least live your life differently.
To my atheist friends, be honest with yourselves and ask why you truly don't believe in God, and if after researching the history of God and why you have been programmed to not believe thru the media, government and catholic church ironically enough ask the good lord to reveal himself to you with an open mind and heart, in the mean time I will pray for you guys because the deception from the truth is real and only by following Yahshua aka God's son can you be saved, God bless you all 💯🙏🏽

I've had trouble believing in God, even though my whole family is Christian. I want to believe there's a God looking out for me, but where's the facts that one exists or could exist?
+Josue De La Torre It depends what you mean by God. If you mean like what is described in the religious texts of the Abrahamic religions - an omnipotent, omniscient, interventionist, anthropomorphic deity separate from the universe itself - I'm afraid there is no evidence whatsoever for this, and no decent reason yet to believe one exists. So if you really 'want to believe' in one, you will need what religious people call 'faith' - maintaining a non-rational belief, in spite of lack of evidence/ evidence to the contrary. On the other hand, if you consider the word 'God' to describe an immanent phenomenon, that encompasses all life and matter in the universe, and is basically a synonym for Life or All That Is, including you yourself, well, look around and look at yourself - your consciousness perceiving this universe is all the evidence needed for this belief. But be aware, this type of 'God' is not 'looking out for you' - that's your job, and the job of your friends and family, who should love you enough not to feed you comforting (for some), but ultimately deluded stories about a God who will. You are responsible for yourself, and also for existing in harmony with the rest of the cosmos, which taken together, can be considered 'God'. Enjoy, God!
God is there he always has been but he won't force his way into your life only people for there beliefs on others about Him. As a Christian we always go through a point when we ask our selves the same questions you are asking. Just try him for yourself. don't listen to what others say. Build a relationship not a religion. Always ask questions and you will find the answers will come to you in the most amazing ways. God Bless
Gotta love the Roots and the timely messages they transcend. I wonder why they film most of their gritty type vids here in NYC and not Philly. It is a shame they are a part of the mainstream by doing that silly Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. I mean they paid their dues and should be on everyone's list; but the childlike, sophomoric humor kinda makes them look bad. They engage in so well that they could loose their street cred. But then again I am on the fence to agree with why they were selected to be the band to lead such a legendary show.

Seriously
I do a bit of emseein myself and I know a good lyricist when I hear one
I also wrote a verse about the big man upstairs
There is no Christ but the one who lives inside you
Gasping for air under the filth that deprives you
Long is the road on the journey to find the one who
Brought into being the very things that define you
Always in space but never in time he can't be defined the father the mother creator of all that is benign
Some have said that to order his holy name is a crime but Elohim comforts his children the sick and the dying
The week and the blind not one of us shall be left behind in his eyes every child is precious and one-of-a-kind
This is a God that many of us have long forgotten
And the son who dared to stand up to the crooked and rotten"
I apologize if there are any typos,I use voice dictation and it tends to fuck up a lot

Black Thought, dare I say, is a modern day Marvin Gaye. So much soul while giving an incredibly and depressingly accurate world. g.o.a.t.
Why does Black Thought's lyrics seem more appropriate to now?
Because there is nothing new under the sun and his lyrics are timeless.

Always ask questions and you will find the answers will come to you in the most amazing ways. God Bless
It's called Apologetics The study of finding reasons to believe in God!
