I remember when the first Highlander Hybrid came out... I looked at the specs online... I looked at the MPG rating, then I looked at the price.... Then I looked at the regular Highlander MPG... Then I looked at its price.... Then it came to me. The same person that thought this was a good idea must be the same person that thought sitting on a cactus was a good idea.
Same exact thought I had when that GM pickup and SUV, what the hell is it, the Yukon or the Denali or Sierra, one of those tanks was made into a hybrid form, don't know if they still make them. Using some quick math in my head, I figured that that extra 1 or 2 MPG you save can buy you 5 free medium lattes from Starbucks every year.

@@OROMl I have just bought a 2008 Highlander Hybrid Limited. 129k miles and now I’m the second owner. Already fell in love with the car. Pay an extra 70 bucks a month for 50k mile warranty. Anything goes wrong in that time I pay a 250 deductible and Toyota dealership will fix it. I think I got myself a good one. I heard a bunch of good reviews and basically looked till I found one that caught my attention. Went to test it out and other than one or two scruff marks on the rear bumper it’s basically perfect. Timing belt and water pump were done at 92k miles so I shouldn’t have to worry about that for awhile. I’m wondering what other things to look for to keep the car running as long as I can.

The dealers refused to deal on hybrids and even with the tax deduction and not counting the battery replacement costs, the hybrid still wasn't worth it. Instead, I would get a 2006 Ford Expedition XLT 4x4 large SUV with the 5.4 L Triton V8 engine, which produces 300 horsepower and the regular four-speed automatic transmission. I have checked out the all-new, 2020 Lincoln Corsair crossover with the 2 L four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which produces 250 horsepower and the eight-speed automatic transmission, replacing the uglier MKC. I don’t think Scotty is right on this one. This 2nd generation Highlander Hybrid is well known for its reliability. I had this same car twice. First time 2012-2014 drove it up to 180k miles without any issue before shipping it overseas(I drive a lot). The 2nd one I still have now has 265k miles and still runs really good. Any car will break down at some point but the Highlander Hybrid is a very solid, reliable car because the gasoline engine doesn’t have a lot of load and last a lot longer.
By the way the one I shipped overseas is still running good eventhough in tougher conditions.

Got four more years and another 100,000 miles out of the car (battery pack was fine when I sold it). I do agree though. Don't bother with a hybrid unless you're driving a ridiculous number of miles.

Scotty, You did an especially excellent job with this video. I don't know much about Highlander's other than they're one of the longest lasting cars you can buy. Your point about the hybrid version not attaining much difference in fuel mileage and only adding about 36 HP is a deal breaker for sure. When you're already working with 270 HP an additional 36 HP isn't needed, nor is the slight bump up in MPG's, or the additional weight and complexity. Your are so right that the hybrid version isn't worth the extra cost. That can be a real money saver for people. You're great!!! I was surprised to hear that there are some hybrid batteries that will last twenty years. I had no idea. I'm presuming these would have been made by or installed factory fresh at the Toyota plant. We bought a brand new Prius C in 2013. We wanted to get ten years out of it. This fall we'll be at year seven and because we've never had one problem with this car we have confidence of reaching the ten year point. Due to it's age now beginning this winter we are using our garage heat set at 60-65F. We feel this will ease things for the battery thus extending its life. But if we could get twenty years out of it that would be a wonderful marvel for sure. Scotty, thank you for the difference you make in the world.

shinkueagle wow what a great joke. This may surprise you since it’s incredibly obvious you’ve never owned a Land Rover product but they do last 4-5 years with little maintenance. Same with BMWs, I only keep mine for 4-5 years and because of that, I have very minimal issues.

Now that my 2008 Highlander Limited is 12 years old and at 125, 000 miles, I'm so glad I passed on getting the AWD or Hybrid Synergy Drive options. Looking for another decade of reliable transportation.

We had this vehicle. In town was 16-17 mpg. Had a bit of trouble with some water getting in through the front vent. It shorted out the side view mirror defrosters. Cost to repair: $ 5000 > traded it in; no more hybrids for us: Thank you.

Buy a Highlander hybrid to save $4,000 in gas, end up spending an extra $12,000 in parts and labor costs, for a net overall LOSS of $8,000 over a regular non-hybrid Highlander SUV. Oh yeah, really smart thinking there Einstein!

The transmission blew up in Our 2008 Highlander Sport 4WD (gas engine) at about 165,000 miles, well beyond the warranty. After a 75 mile tow to the closest Toyota dealer (New Hampshire ski trip), 3 days waiting on a Toyota remanufactured trans and crazy labor charge, the total cost was $5,000. NIGHTMARE. The diagnosis; the main seal of the transmission was slowly leaking fluid, and it must have run dry, causing the gears to seize, and chunks of metal and gear oil were all over the ground at 5 mph in the parking lot. This was after years of "factory service" from the dealer we bought it from, who used to tell us that the "wet spot" under the transaxle was "normal seepage, nothing to worry about". Moral of the story - even fabled bullet proof Toyotas can be a service nightmare. Listen to Uncle Scotty! (P.S. - That was about 8 years ago. THIS year, the front differential blew up. That was $4,000 for a new Toyota unit and all the fkn labor to install it.)
