All good advice. I have done the Caledonian twice both times with a inexperienced but younger fit paddler.I myself getting on in years with experience. My tips, discuss before you get on the the water rescues and reactions. Check the weather forecast because it changes quickly. We paddled Kayaks on the quiet side and were always within swim distance of shore. Those Loch's are cold! . That way your close to nature as you pass . Theres no need to go down the Middle . You can also pull in to get out stretch sooth your bum every few hours and make a brew. Even at my age 60 + i could swim with or without kayak to shore i didnt need to rely on my partner as i was close enough . Make life easy make it safe..
I highly recommend the X rescue when canoeing for deep water rescue. It works like a charm! I have also done the swim to shore in a pinch too. Note that I rarely capsize, but if you canoe for 30+ years it happens, so you will need to self-rescue.
