    Your quilts are beautiful. I do believe that often designers overstate the yardage in case there are cutting issues. I would prefer to have more fabric then just enough.

    Your quilts are great! I used scraps and yardage from my Laundry Basket stash. The only extra fabric I bought was an accent fabric which was a grunge. I agree with you about the binding and backing....I used a solid for the back. The quilting was free motion on my home sewing machine, and I did each block separately (kinda Angela Walters style) but coordinated throughout, using same thread top and bobbin. The binding is the accent fabric. After washing, it looks exactly the way I hoped. The entire experience was a challenge, and when the quilt was finished I was very happy!

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  2 года назад

      I've used the Angela Walters style on a quilt a couple years ago. I quilted each quadrant of the quilt and then sewed them together afterwards. It's such a helpful technique because I have such a narrow space on my sewing machine! Your quilt sounds lovely! I love the visual texture that grunge fabric adds to a quilt.
      I enjoyed the challenge of this quilt too! I'm already looking forward to next year's mystery quilt!

    Beautiful quilt tops!! You should be proud. I am really glad that you were able to piece the blocks together so quickly with the method I shared with you. I use this method ALL the time. I keep the thread between each block tight like chain piecing. You are right it can get heavy and bulky but I have a table or ironing board next to me to hold the weight. 😃

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  2 года назад

      The piecing method was great! I'll continue to use it for this type of complicated quilt top. I didn't end up needing that extra thread, so next time I'm not going to bother leaving space between the rows. 😊 Thanks again for the recommendation! I really appreciate it. ❤️

    Both of your quilts turned out beautifully. Thanks for your videos that helped to keep me on task as I tackled this rather difficult, but very rewarding, project. I'm just getting ready to sew my blocks together, finally, after having figured out how to keep my cats off of the layout. I've learned that I actually LIKE working with pieces this small, and loved the sewing practice in making so many different block patterns. I may make the quilt again in different colors, for the practice, so thanks for figuring out the actual yardage needed for the patchwork. The less I have to figure out on my own, the better. Keep up the good work!

      Thank you! I'm really pleased with how they came out. 😊 Edyta is such an amazing designer! I really appreciate how she explored strip piecing and it's versatility in this quilt. If you enjoy small blocks you might enjoy last year's mystery quilt. The blocks were even smaller! 4 1/2 inches, I think.

    Your quilts look wonderful. I have not gotten mine all together yet. I agree about making scrappy backing. I only do that if I have a lot of one fabric and need to just add enough to make the backing large enough. Not sure yet what I will do for the binding on this quilt. I had a lot of fabric left over too. But I am happy the way the mystery quilt turned out.

      I'm very happy with the way this mystery quilt came out too! I like that we got to explore the versatility of strip piecing and I really appreciate the slower pace she set this year. I also think the name Arizona fits the quilt really well!

    Both quilt tops are beautiful but I think my favorite is the blue with a pop of orange. I am surprised that you have so much fabric left. I dont think I am going to do this quilt since I am on a budget and cant justify buying so much and then have that much left overs. This has been really fun watching you make this quilt. Looking forward for more videos from you.

    I didn't know that chain piecing the top that way actually had a specific name to it - "webbing". MSCQ and FQS demonstrate it all of the time with quilt blocks. I myself prefer to piece my tops in quadrants because of the weight like you indicated gets to be a little much. Beautiful quilts by the way.

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  2 года назад +1

      I've also heard it called "net piecing" in the context of a block and not a whole quilt top. It never occurred to me to use the technique for the top before. I usually just assemble my tops row by row. I love that as quilters we aren't stuck with just one way of doing something. There is so much room for personal preference!

    WOW! Both quilts are indeed stunning! You did a terrific job! 🙂 Thanks for sharing your finished pics. I still haven't started mine...sigh...but I will. I'll be back to re-watch your videos when I get started with my quilt because I like how you explain your thoughts and your process of making each of the blocks. AND your pictures and videography are both great.
    Also thanks for sharing how you sewed your top together. It's a good strategy from Bonnie Hunter but I don't like to sew the long rows together so I sew my tops together in clusters (Pat Sloan idea). For example, since this top is 9 blocks x 9 blocks, I would sew together in hunks of 3's to make big 9 patches. In case that doesn't make sense: I'd sew blocks 1-2-3 in Row 1 together, then 1-2-3 in Row 2, then 1-2-3 in Row 3, and make a 9-patch out of them. Then continue until I have 9 big 9-patches. Eventually I'd only have to sew 3 long rows together.
    I'm amazed how much fabric you had left over! I appreciate you sharing how much fabric you actually used. That's very interesting and good to know. I guess Edyta was planning on us making a pieced backing for sure. I'm not sure if I will or not, but I do hope I have enough left over of one piece for the binding.

    • @ThimbleStorm
      @ThimbleStorm  2 года назад +1

      I've never heard or that piecing method. I'm intrigued! I'll have to try it out. If you connect the blocks in clusters you could spin your seams and have a flatter quilt top.
      Thanks for your kind compliments! They have brightened up my morning. ❤️
      I use the camera on my phone to film and photograph everything. I know it's not as good as a fancy $$$ camera, but I try to make it work. 😊

      @@ThimbleStorm I just watched Edyta's new video and someone asked about the pieced backing for the 2022 Summer Mystery Quilt. I wanted to let you know that Edyta said she is still working on it and will be posting a video about how to do it on Sept. 16th.

    • @cathybarnes8303
      @cathybarnes8303 2 года назад

      I like your idea of big 9 patches. I am wrestling 81 blocks together right now and am on the last row finally. I have used Bonnie Hunter's method of webbing for years and it really keeps the quilt together. I only chain a few stitches between blocks though instead of wasting thread like this gal does. Chunk webbing like Pat Sloan's method works fine too. In your case I suggest sewing in columns instead of rows, then turn 1/ 4 and sew columns again to get 9 patches using the webbing idea. Keeps all 9 blocks together--less chance of flipping rows.

    The quilts are just stunning. Kudos for the honest assessment of the fabric requirements vs fabric used. I share your sentiment regarding our quilting budgets. Also, last video you asked if we know of other mystery quilt alongs; I follow Jessica Dayton and she has QAL on her blog - not sure they are mystery but I love her style and tutorials. Looking foward to seeing your next project.

    They both came out beautiful! I have notice before that Edyta tends to suggest much more fabric than needed. Instead of giving specific amounts she'll just say buy a yard bundle or half yard bundle. Maybe she is just trying to sell more of her own fabric, but it's not fair to those who sew on a budget.

    • @maureentaphouse5206

      That's a very good comment and really most patterns give more accurate numbers. Hopefully when she releases the pattern Edyta will do likewise. My favourite mystery is still the one from several years ago now sold as California. Mine is finally in my quilting queue so might be finished this year.
