Have had my Rexton Ultimate for 15 months of trouble free motoring! Watched all other major manufacturers issue recalls, Ranger, Toyota, Mitsy and the Ssangyong has given me good feeling inside just going about its business in total confidence. Rides well, tows brilliantly (I did get ironman suspension fitted) quieter than most of its competitors and 7.9l/100 on the highway with standard 6x 4 trailer loaded to 500kg max. Was initially hesitant because of Ssangyong financial woes but new owners KG have sorted this out once and for all. Tech is first class and seats are bigger than both Hilux/Fortuner and Triton. Best value 4WD on the market without a shadow of a doubt. Is it a Landcruiser-No it isnt, but I could almost get 3 for the price one pays these days for a LC300 and the 300 is barely one and half times the car in respect of capability and ride. Missus loves the car and I m now thinking of getting the Musso our experience has been so good! Sutherland Ssangyong in Sydney brilliant to work with, courtesy car when I drop off for service and always focused on my experience as a customer!
Ive got a 2020 Rhino SWB. The ride is bumpy, but when there weight in the tray its alot smoother. We absolutely love it and will always upgrade to ssangyong, looking forward to buying a newer model someday. Had zero issues with it in 4 years. Love the interior, the black lining on the celiling stood out to us so we went and tinted it, so its nice and dark in the cab. I find it great on diesel and has great pick up for overtaking. We also took an LDV ute for a test drive and it felt like it took about 10minutes to get upto 100ks. No power at all. Jumped in the rhino and knew straight away, this is what i want! 🙂
I have a 2021 and its only broken down a few times with an electricam problem. The car is actually really good its the customer service that lets it down.
Good review and great reviewer, awesome in fact. Now subscribed 👏 Ssangyong have done a great job with the musso. This update needed to be better though. The creek should of been sized like the ranger. The wheels look too small on these cars especially the lwb. Maybe being black rims doesn’t help but they need to be at least 19’s or better designed/coloured? The elf rims are woeful and look aged already. $375 servicing is not cheap to undo a nut and change a simple filter and I would be doing an oil change every 8000 to 10000 kms rather than 15000. Wish they imported them with the Khan badge on and wish Merv Hughes wasn’t doing their advertising. Don’t dumb your brand down Ssangyong, not everyone, in fact not that many Aussies are sport/cricket drongo’s in Australia. You could of not used him and spent his fee on that centre seat belt upgrade 😊
We need a new ute as our 2015 Colorado LTZ is falling to peices after 250k. Been in the shop 3 times with engine issues , time for a new one. Going to get the Mussi Ultimate XLV as we have horses. The 7 year warrenty is a winner and 3.5t break tow is what we need. Looked at the base level Amorak Core its plain and lacks features and costs 55k in WA. To get the same festures the Musso has, your paying at least 70k way outside our price range. Hilux and Ranger all simila price for same features. We are not cashed up mining people so cannot afford to spend 70 - 80k on a ute,
Currently tossing up between this and a GWM. They both have good points. GWM service centres seem to be horror stories, but the local dealer also sells Ssangyongs too, so I’m having to discount that haha. I like both - though I do admit coming from a 2008 car I don’t mind not having all the nanny features. And it’s so nice having a green paint job again - I’m quite partial to that!
Good thoughts mate. It really comes down to whether you want the tech and safety kit, as to whether you should choose the GWM. I personally would, because I value those features like blind spot and rear cross traffic alert.
@@therightcar Matt something interesting: lately I've been driving my 2001 Falcon (while I wait to get the X-Trail repaired due to a stupid L plater rear ending it) which basically has only ABS and 2 air bags as the safety nannies and I have not missed having ESP/TC, blind spot, and other active safety nannies at all, if anything it forces the driver to you know actually drive the car in a more responsible manner and yes going back to RWD after years and years of FWD biased AWD its amazing just how smother it is plus HYDRULIC power steering WOW I can feel the road again which inspires conference. about the only thing I miss is DAB+ and Google Maps through a big screen (currently using my Pixel 7 pro running through a Bluetooth to FM transmitter for infotainment) but irony I found all my old cassettes & CD-R's and who knew all those FM stereo recordings from the 80's / 90's & making compilation CD's (when CD Burners first were released in 1999/2000) still sound pretty good today ... being LPG its not economical, but hey paying $50 and getting 50Litres makes up for that and being able to do around 350km (roughly 14.5L per 100km combined)
I was tossing up between the two, ended up with a cannon, I love having auto cruise, and all cannons even the base has it with stop and go and also subjective but it's a very nice looking ute, musso is a bit polarising
I think this is the nicest looking ute on the market by a long way. The touch controls are spot on and if anything they are leading the way with what's to come (apart from a hilux they are still stuck in the 80s with design and features.
They were good value a few years ago. And I suppose they still are compared to the competition, but it's lost it's competitive edge. I wouldn't pay this much for one especially since we get the old engine.
Great review! Excellent vehicle for the money that ticks a lot of boxes for the majority of buyers. I do find it odd that we didn't get DAB+ radio in Aus, but have seen it standard on overseas models.
I think you can either get AM or DAB+, not both. And given these can sell to rural buyers that mightn't have DAB+, and might need AM access in emergency situations, it could be a godsend.
I’ve driven both extensively. I like both for different reasons. Cannon X is unbelievable value. Ssangyong has a more liveable drive and better towing, plus the choice of standard or XLV….
I had a Ssangyong Kyron for many years. Did 440,000 Km and still drove well when I sold it recently. Keep it maintained, warm it up before flogging it and it will last ages. The whole car was well put together.
@@therightcar Not very much and it just needed to do one job. The old clunker will probably still run for a while. If it stops it will be a simultaneous failure of everything.
The auto g/box is an aisine g/box. The same as in the Mitsi,Isuzu, toyota and Mahindra. The engine is a mercedes designed diesel that the Koreans bought the patent and manufacture. Drive train has alot of American gear. Its a solid package. Only fault is that some Musso's have a violent shake at 80 and 100 k per hour. Unfortunately Musso haven't recognised this and deny the problem.
@@therightcaradaptive cruise is the best thing ever added to a car. Improves safety more than anything else as you can pay attention to the road instead of worrying about looking at your Speedo.
Hi Matt, great review, I like many others are in a quandry on whether to buy or not to buy. I also am considering the 2014 Rexton. I appreciate your in-depth reviews keep up the good work. A new Rexton review would be great for me.
Triton and Navara are shockers , the Musso is better than both of them. But everything else is better than it. Agree though that i'd buy this well before any Chinese ute.
In Korea, SsangYong refers to this model as the Rexton Pickup. In other words, in Korea, the successor to the Musso is the Rexton, and this vehicle is the pickup version of the Rexton. If you visit Korea and want to purchase this vehicle, you should buy a Rexton Pickup rather than a Musso. In Korea, the Musso was sold from 1993 to 2005, and it is the predecessor of the Rexton.
Before you use the word "CHEAP" the purchase price is only one element that makes up the cost. More importantly cost of ownership and re-sale value are just as important. The Hilux for example has the best re-sale value of the utes, cars that have done 60,000 to 70,000kms are selling for near new with the Ranger not far behind.
@@therightcaryeah and they’re good utes, but I’ll be buggered if I’m paying that sort of money for something with 200,000km on it! I’d rather roll the dice on a $40k new Ute. I keep cars until they’re done, so resale doesn’t matter to me ( my current 2008 i30 diesel is up to 463,000km, hence why I’m looking for a new car)
I've owned two Ssangyong Mussos in twenty four years sadly I am amazed that in all that time they have not taken on board the issue with the rear central seat belt my old MK2 had this even though it was a five door estate in the twenty four years between my old MK2 and the new Mk6 they have not changed this. Yet Ssangyong did listen to the owners club and dealer's in regards to the placement of the handbrake which for some unknown reason they stuck on the left hand side of the centre console in the MK4 which on a right hand drive vehicle was ridiculous I had a test drive of a MK4 and at six foot one even I found awkward to use this put me off but from the Mk5 they changed this . It is noticeable that there are differences in the specs between countries, my new one is the Saracen short wheelbase below the long wheelbase called the Rhino (from the Mk7 called Saracen+) there is only one model in the long wheelbase.
I bought 2 cars same time. MUSSOO XLV and KORANDO 4WD. I would not recommended anyone to buy this brand as when come to service SsangYong Australia and dealer does not want to fix it the Ute fault{ suspension and steering wheel fault} they turn around and says its normal noises after they kept my Ute for over 6 months in 3 different dealers {SSANGYONG HOMEBUSH, GREENACRE AND BRYAN HILTON} and cant fix it. I have no other choice then take them to fair trading and ask for money back on car almost 2 years old car. PLEASE DONT BUY THIS BRAND IF YOU GUYS DONT WANT THE HEADACHE FOR LONG TERM.
Well they offer 7 years of warranty and build a brand on the back of offering a quality experience for owners. Hopefully it is good. Ssangyong owners tend to buy them again!
Only reason I'm looking at upgrading is for Adaptive cruise, AEB and lane assist. Sitting in peak hour each day and experiencing this combo has made me want to get a new vehicle, sadly without adpative crusie this ones now off the list :-(
So tempted by the Musso but for me, it just doesnt look like a 4x4. In standard guise, it has as much tyre-to-wheel arch gap as a medium SUV. Even with the optional ironman lift kit it only adds 40mm of lift. I know you can get a body lift for them as well but not really something I want to have to do. Great car but a bit more of an SUV than a 4x4 ute.
The reason I brought one was for throwing tents in the back and abit of camping. So far been over terrain i would have never attempted in my skoda superb sportline. 😂
It just looks wacky compared to the other dual cabs on the market. The SWB with some chunky tyres and the ironman kit looks passable. But I will never get used to the LWB, the proportions are all off. This ute has the potential to be great, but Ssang Yong are getting greedy with their pricing without listening to feedback and improving it, and that will cost them sales. I don't consider it very good value anymore and would instead look to a second hand Ranger, Amarok, BT50 or D-Max instead.
I have just replaced my poverty pack Hilux workmate single cab for a poverty pack Hilux workmate dual cab. I’m sure my new grandson won’t mind riding around in it. $41437 bargain.
The lap only rear belt is a dealbreaker for me. My 17 year old dual cab has one, so why risk centre passenger facial injuries by updating to one of these? Otherwise, these would be a real contender for me.
I took one for a test ride last year and really liked it, however it was a very sunny day and when we turned around the sun hit the dash so bad that i could not read the instrument cluster at all due to the very bright glare , the leathery flap on top of the steering column made the glare even worse and i honestly could not read how fast i was going, etc. It was the only reason i did not buy it (yet). Has anyone else encountered this?
Everyone goes on about rear centre seatbelt. Nobody mensions it has 4 whee disc brakes alot off utes have rear drums.the seatbelt was not a problem I was more interested in stopping.
I'm in the market for a new ute and looking at the Musso. However, I'm concerned when reading the Owners Facebook about vibration issues at higher speeds, poor dealership support with long waiting times for spare parts and Ssangyong Australia not supporting their warranty and dropping a shoulder when things go wrong plus simple things like not communicating with customers who are having issues. Does anyone have experience or comments??
That’s a bit concerning, for sure. But also, the type of person who rants online about bad service might not have been the sort of person who deserved great service!
@@therightcar I would agree with you, but this wasn't one individual, in fact the points I highlighted appear to be common themes (and there are others)... hence my post on your vlog.
21Musso ultimate and would never purchase another one. The worst riding Ute, jittery and bad shudder at certain speeds, exceleration lag around 2 to 3seconds, auto constantly hunting gears because the ecu adapts to your driving style and trying to get good support from Ssangyong is very difficult, but if you get a good one then they are not to bad
@@therightcar I think they are a great car when you get a good one with no problems, like any car , but the company is not listening to the current customers. The jittery ride has been brought up on many forums and they not not correct it, I believe this shows a lack of consumer support. I do like mine, like the look and the overall build, but ride and customer support is the downfall.
for $34k they aren't bad. There are others that are very competitive if its over that. These days its all about how cheap it is coz China is always knocking on the door with $20k cars..
When you said you had problems with cables to connect your phone you could have said that the cable must be able to transfer data as well as charge and you should have known that.
The Wife has owned a Rexon for the past 2 years and she loves it. We did have an on going problem with it and took it back to the dealership 3 times to try and get it fixed but to no avail. After almost 2 months of being stuffed around I contacted SsangYong directly. The next day the dealership called and got the car back in and it was fixed. So if you are in QLD just be careful of the dealership that rhymes with dicks and you should be good. My MK Triton just dropped it's gearbox plus it has other things slowly going wrong at 360k she is old. I think I am going to get the Musso as a replacement. Does anyone know if you can get a tray to replace the side style on the XLV?
Longs it dose the job your asking of it. If your in town you wouldn't be asking much. If your a country person I suppose you want it for towing gds doing firewood you want it to do the job and do it well
If they make a right hand drive - then they can put the blinker stalk on the right hand side too = they lost how many sales due to this= many ! I don't buy due to this one stupidity.

This is all great commentary for potential new customers mate. Good to hear.
Another great review! Keep up the brilliant work.
Thanks mate!
No complaints about my Musso !
Been driving my '22 ultimate lux for a month now, couldnt sell the thing more if i tried, such an under rated ute! Try one and youll buy one
Good review and great reviewer, awesome in fact. Now subscribed 👏
Ssangyong have done a great job with the musso.
Thanks for that mate. Glad you’re enjoying the channel and cheers for sharing your thoughts!
We are not cashed up mining people so cannot afford to spend 70 - 80k on a ute,
Do it, you won't regret it! My husband has a ranger (newer model) and it's crap to drive. Both of us prefer diving my Rhino
I guess it’s not too bad for the money, but I could never get over the look from the side, it’s just a big slab of flat metal . Nice review
When your driving it ! You cant see the sides, so why worry about the looks...
It's a ute who cares what it looks like.
I didn't like the back of it, but as soon as I test drove it I didn't care! Loved it
Fascinating to note the vehicles having high view counts across the cars Matt reviews. Some major players with very low views.
Yep - channel is growing but it’s the challenger brands that are having cut through with my approach.
Go the musso. Much better quality car.
@@SirBigzalot Yes, and it's not Chinese.
You made it!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Welcome back, Matt
Thanks mate. Managed to get this edit done, should have another vid for the weekend too 👍
I’d take it over any of the other utes any day
Fair enough!
LDV has a very low customer rating on product review. Scores around 3.
Okay. Where does Ssangyong rank?
musso ranks 4.3 higher than the hilux matt@@therightcar
Good honest review, great to see you mentioned the ride quality as it is not the best 👍
Thanks mate.
I have a brand new 73plate + I've not seen anyone else in London with it yet so I'm feeling very unique 😊
Nice one!
Looks pretty good and particularly in that green taint.
Yep the green is a great colour. Just wish they'd added arch-flares and different wheels and tyres to suit the Adventure name.
Yep the prices have crept up quite a bit. Success can breed greed.
The lap sash in the rear a NON issue
Not unless you carry 5 people regularly. I’ve got one and it’s not an issue for me, but it could be for some people.
Why buy a dual-cab then?
We've all got that one kid that ......
Finhers crossed finance goes ahead, then ill be in a musso. Had an actyon few years back was nice ride. Shall update you hopefully soon
These utes are awesome! Coupled with some stiffer body mounts - its a game changer!
Would love to sample that.
Mahindra Pik Up owners enjoyed this video
Could you possibly do a comparison between the Musso Xlv and the Cannon X .??
I’ve driven both extensively.
I like both for different reasons. Cannon X is unbelievable value. Ssangyong has a more liveable drive and better towing, plus the choice of standard or XLV….
I had a Ssangyong Kyron for many years. Did 440,000 Km and still drove well when I sold it recently. Keep it maintained, warm it up before flogging it and it will last ages. The whole car was well put together.
Wow! Someone paid money for a Kyron with 440k on the clock?!
I have 2023 pre face lift xlv musso. And tbh I wouldn't have purchased it if it had autonomous cruise control.
What? Why?
agree, prefer minimum intrusions by the car that encourage sleeping at the wheel. At least the choice of non "Conga line" control should be available.
You’re in luck, Brian… Rexton review is coming very soon!
If I were in this market space then I would look the Musso well before the China brigade, that said Triton and Navara are better options.
Triton and Navara are shockers , the Musso is better than both of them. But everything else is better than it. Agree though that i'd buy this well before any Chinese ute.
Yeah Navara is a shitbox. Whenever I see one I question why someone bought it in the first place. I’d go a GWM Ute over a Navara honestly.
Thanks for your thoughts mate.
The rear door edge looks quite sharp to me, and would be quite sharp do you think??
Correct, it isn’t overly enjoyable when you smack into it.
@@therightcar OUCH!!!
Fair point. There are plenty of five year old “big name” utes with 200,000km selling for similar money to this.
Thanks for your comment. Glad I’m not the only one incensed by it!
PERFECT CAR
Sorry, bud. Not having physical buttons and switches for the infotainment IS indeed a deal-breaker. Make cars makes sense again.
Thanks for the comment. It’s just a thing that so many brands are getting wrong!
shame they still don't have adaptive cruise control.
Do these have a limited slip diff?
Il'l be buying one when i get tired of my xc90. Ill get the longer deck and do a 2 inch lift.
Is the steering telescopic?
I like your honesty
That’s what this channel is all about.
Yep I was definitely thinking of trading my ranger in on one but that centre lap seat belt is a deal breaker for me .
I hear ya!
What is the company like with service support and warranty?
Well they offer 7 years of warranty and build a brand on the back of offering a quality experience for owners. Hopefully it is good. Ssangyong owners tend to buy them again!
Only reason I'm looking at upgrading is for Adaptive cruise, AEB and lane assist. Sitting in peak hour each day and experiencing this combo has made me want to get a new vehicle, sadly without adpative crusie this ones now off the list :-(
when's the xsr review coming out ?
When I get a chance to edit it! Hahaha
Is it just me or is that a left-hand drive shifter gate pattern?
It could well be. The Rexton doesn’t have it - it gets an e-shifter with a straight sequence.
My 98 hilux died , can’t afford a new one ( over priced ) musso or triton ?
Work or play?
So tempted by the Musso but for me, it just doesnt look like a 4x4. In standard guise, it has as much tyre-to-wheel arch gap as a medium SUV. Even with the optional ironman lift kit it only adds 40mm of lift. I know you can get a body lift for them as well but not really something I want to have to do. Great car but a bit more of an SUV than a 4x4 ute.
It does have some quirky dimensions. A set of fender flares and a lift kit with 35s would fix it, to a degree!
@@therightcarbut 35s on a Prius would look awesome too! 😂
The reason I brought one was for throwing tents in the back and abit of camping. So far been over terrain i would have never attempted in my skoda superb sportline. 😂
It's the only ute that is based on a suv not the other way around✌️
It just looks wacky compared to the other dual cabs on the market. The SWB with some chunky tyres and the ironman kit looks passable. But I will never get used to the LWB, the proportions are all off. This ute has the potential to be great, but Ssang Yong are getting greedy with their pricing without listening to feedback and improving it, and that will cost them sales. I don't consider it very good value anymore and would instead look to a second hand Ranger, Amarok, BT50 or D-Max instead.
Great job, can you do a review for the updated version of rexton ? Thank alot 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I have just replaced my poverty pack Hilux workmate single cab for a poverty pack Hilux workmate dual cab. I’m sure my new grandson won’t mind riding around in it. $41437 bargain.
That’s not a bad deal!
Yep the last version had a bad glare issue on the screen. It’s better now!
good point - i noticed that too, all i could see was PU leather grain.
@@brewstamacbeth981I fitted mine with dash mat and problem solved.
Who are the makers of the gear box
It’s an Aisin auto.
Aisin is owned by Toyota and I believe is the same as the 6-speed auto in the Hilux and a number of other brands
I wonder how much it’ll be if there’s an electrical fault
That’s a peculiar concern. It would be covered by the seven-year warranty, one would imagine.
I hear electrical problems most often occur after fitting of aftermarket goodies ...apparently the computer doesn't appreciate fiddlers.
A fine ute BUT for those of us in the high country looking for something besides a subaru that has FULL TIME 4wd this thing is only part time.
I’ve got 2014 v200 greatwall Ute the cheapest Ute ever made and Evan it hasn’t got a rear seat lap belt buckle.
Sounds like every other manufacturer atm
Its coming from stirrers who don't even own a Musso.....just disgruntled morons
I found Ssangyong Australia actioned my issue really quickly. it was the dealership that was the problem
A GWM if you want engine problems and built in rust on the LDV , the musso is the best cheap ute
i had a 2005 Musso and the only gripe i had with it was that it was criminally under powered!
Barra swap? 🤣
@@therightcar if i had the skills to do that i would have lol
I still have mine and I agree, but it never gives up...not a problem with it
21Musso ultimate and would never purchase another one. The worst riding Ute, jittery and bad shudder at certain speeds, exceleration lag around 2 to 3seconds, auto constantly hunting gears because the ecu adapts to your driving style and trying to get good support from Ssangyong is very difficult, but if you get a good one then they are not to bad
I’m confused. You say you’d never purchase another one. But then say it’s not too bad!
I think the rear 6 lap is a bit crap but realistically, the utes aren't made for 5 passengers.
I disagree with the statement. Ssangyong should do better.
I bought my Dmax dual cab 4x4 in 2013 for $36,500 drive away new.
Times have changed...
They sure have! #blamecovid
for $34k they aren't bad. There are others that are very competitive if its over that. These days its all about how cheap it is coz China is always knocking on the door with $20k cars..
When you said you had problems with cables to connect your phone you could have said that the cable must be able to transfer data as well as charge and you should have known that.
I did know that. Derrrrrr. It was a data cable, and it failed.
I had to change cable works fine now
Why no android auto?
I got the swb and im getting an 1800 tray put on mine with a canopy
As good as these cheaper dual cabs are they need some dramatic cosmetic updates, especially the grills. ie: bloody ugly.😊
That they are but I still thank whoever it’s not a Lexus 😂😂😂
Love Musso's but no way would i put 3.5 on the back, hell i'd be concerned with 3.
That seems sensible. So many utes have 3.5t but feel way out of their depth with 2800
Mahindra over gwm or the world champion of rust ldv any day
Longs it dose the job your asking of it. If your in town you wouldn't be asking much. If your a country person I suppose you want it for towing gds doing firewood you want it to do the job and do it well
no mention of the mahindra?
I mean, if you just need a vehicle that is basic as and will handle punishment, it could be a great choice!
i would choose the musso over a chinese ute.
I get it!
What this hang up with the lap only belt? Second Aussie review I’ve watched crying about it. 🤷🏻♂️
Who sells Single Cabs.

Never ever buy Chinese!
It's not Chinese
Its Korean, like Hyundai and kia....
Right but you know this is South Korean, right?
@@therightcar , yes I'm considering buying a ssangyong. But I was referring to the statement about buying a Greatwall!
yeah because they buy x3 as much from us, as we do from them. clown.

Wow. You’re very cranky about this!
