- Thermopile repair for a water heater service call. Code 2 Low thermopile Voltage. My own water heater 6 months later cost me. Thermopile testing and replacement. Thermopile voltage testing , valve test. Bucket of tricks !
We lived out in the country and a culvert ran past our garage so my step dad constructed a “urinal” out of a five gallon bucket and secured it in a back corner of the garage running the drain out to the culvert.
Well played “step dad” well plated!
Great informative video and nice little gadget to test the thermopile voltage !
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching appreciate the comment!
Bro just get to the point
Thanks for watching!
Naw seriously
Just started watching you I like you I think you're pretty good subscribed
Thanks! Appreciate the subscription! I will make a video on the box , its a battery with a resistor you can use ohm's law to calculate the needed resistor size. But i'll make a video about it
Nice, so you refurbish water heaters. You must be selling a lot because the prices of new ones in the store is so high. I was at the store the other day and nearly passed out at the water heater prices lol😂😂.
Yeah I'm so busy , I have a fulltime day job and work on them after work and weekends and I can't keep up with demand. Its a good problem to have , thanks for commenting and watching ! I have a service call from Hell 3 , coming soon , That water heater is a pain, but interesting to work on never seen all these different fault codes on the same unit before! The tenants are super cool and understanding it runs for about a week then coughs up another issue , my next move is to convert it to a older mechanical valve , those things just work!
@@thewaterheaterfactory yea i am ready to get a Mechanical valve...
Yeah can't keep up! Thanks!!!
No worries I got you!!!
Got a status light indicating a low voltage. The pilot stays lit while holding in the pilot button. I open tested the thermpile connector and got about 740mV after a couple mins of the pilot staying on. Once i release it, the pilot goes out, and 2 flashes red after about 30 secs. Could the thermopile still be bad? Or would it be the controller possibly?
I have seen this before , could be in the wiring of the thermopile or at the connector breaking the electrical link to the circuit board , try replacing the thermopile to confirm.
I see this often on 2014-2015 Rheems.
@thewaterheaterfactory I appreciate your quick response. I replaced the water heater early 2017, so I'm assuming it's one of those 2015 models, perhaps. Going to try replacing the thermopile. 👍🏽
Thermo pile or wiring from it , possibly the circuit board in the controller
@@thewaterheaterfactory wanted to give an update. I swapped out the thermopile and it still wouldn't work. Called rheem and they shipped over a controller. Thankfully it was still under warranty. Damn thing would have been about $400. Drained and swapped it out. Worked like a charm. Still under warranty for another 2 years. Going to call back in a year and say the thermopile went out, just to have a backup haha
So , false code fault 2 ? That's why I always test the thermo pile first ! Good job !
pilot light still light. and urinal still here..... that cracks me up, I like your sense of humor. it's like urinal is gonna go anywhere in couple minutes. hahahahaha.
That was a crazy Service Call I did not expect to see a urinal in the garage. They were actually selling the house and they kept the urinal in the garage. I think it’s pretty awesome I guess if you’re in your garage are working all the time you don’t have to go inside the house you could just take a piss right there.😂
@@thewaterheaterfactorythanks for replying and the video. I bought a house and the furnace showing error 2. Pilot can light up a small flame and when I turn to high. The flame goes very big for a second and I can see the orange color. Then after 5-10 seconds it turns off, then I can never light it up. Then I wait for couple hours I was able to light it up again. Wondering if it’s the thermopile or the Honeywell control panel went out. 😢
@@shangshi4609 what’s the year of the Water Heater?
@@shangshi4609 it kind of sounds like it might be the Trd, if it’s a 2014 or 2015 maybe even a 2016 but if it’s newer to say those are some interesting symptoms, I don’t think they could. It’s the Honeywell control valve. Sounds like somethings going on with the pilot tube, if you’re getting a two flash you need to measure your Thermo Pile voltage and confirm that it’s low 650 mill volts are higher is pretty healthy. Sometimes when the gas valve is bad it’ll throw a code too. I’ve seen that before hope that helps.
Oh, I’m assuming your water heater is a rheem
if it's leaking/dripping water around the manifold opening what does that usually mean? is my unit about to explode on me? lol I noticed it when I took off the manifold to get a look under since my pilot light won't stay on and I got the two blinks on the LED telling me it's a thermopile issue. This will be my first attempt at fixing something like this, thanks for the video.
Reorder the pilot assembly, easier that way , you try cleaning it off sometimes works ! occasionally a 2 flash is the valve hope that's not it!
Dripping water is condensation when it first fires up , should go away after about a half an hour
I just replaced the pilot assembly and got the thermopile voltage low message.. should I try again? I’m scared now lol. Wondering if that’s normal
If you have a new pilot assembly with a new Thermo Pile, it’s probably your valve sometimes you’ll get a false code or two flash one actually the valve itself is bad. I’ve seen that quite a few times best way to verify it is to measure the voltage of the thermal but if it’s brand new, I guarantee it’s probably about 700 mV so looks like you might need a valve.
Huge help thx
No problem!
Would you please make a video how to make that gadget
Thank you in advanced
O.K. I need to visit "the professor" first he helped me my "Walter White" its easy though!
I finally got around to my Anode Rod installation the other day ! Video to follow!
guy is on his way to fix mines now
Sweet
@@thewaterheaterfactory guy replaced the thermopile and the damn thing STILL didnt work.
i got on BACK on the phone with AO SMITH and yelled at them letting them know i paid the guy 250.00 for nothing. she issued me an R code to take to Lowes and they are going to exchange this for another one. thank god i had the audacity to ask
@@larryBurks-qk9oj , it’s probably the Circuit Board
You always want to measure the thermopile voltage first before you just start replacing it because often it’s the Circuit Board but most of the information online says Replace the Thermo Pile I replace more circuit boards and thermal piles that’s for sure
@@thewaterheaterfactory i just left Lowes, they refunded me my money on a lowes credit card and i requested how much to have them come out and swap and he said something to the tune of 457.00
that sounds a little high, i guess although the labor is covered for a year.
ill be glad when this warranty with AO Smith is over with Jan 31s, 2025 and my 5 year plan kicks in with Lowes. although they covered the thermopile, i had to pay for shipping which was 30 bucks. thats ridiculous that should have been free.
oh well
If you can post the parts list for the thermo-pile tester for the battery case and the capacitors, would greatly be appreciated.
Uses a ressitor depending on the battery size we made one with two aaa batery's 3 volts total resisted down to 800mV
Do you have the number of those capacitors for the thermal pile pile tester that you used. Very interested that's pretty neat,
I'll be working on a video for it as soon as I'm not busy. Ha , always busy , use ohms law test the ohm at the valve connector point i believe its 13-14 ohm's I believe you test the ohm of the battery and wire use Ohm's law your looking to reduce the voltage below 1 volt shoot for 500-600 mV. lower is better because the current is unstable. Or if you can find a DC battery less than a volt it will work without a resistor. Maybe there is a European one? You can also count the rings on the resistor and it will tell you the resistance. It took a few resistors for us to get it right it also does not work on every valve because the voltage is unstable, FYI. But it will power the motherboard removed from the valve its crazzy to see a cover/motherboard removed sitting there blinking. Sometimes the old error codes up sometimes they don't..I find it usefull in the filed for testing quickly you can actually run the water heater off it but it drains the battery quickly. Maybe an hour ? fully charged? Probably a way to make one run off of Ac wall current stepped down and converted to dc 12 volt with a lager resistor ,but its dangerous because there is no proof of flame , so if the pilot goes out gas will keep coming nothing to stop it. Because it would be a pilot light bypass essentially = DANGEROUS.
Its a 10 Ohm Resistor, on two aaa batteries or 3 volts, simple but works well on MOST valves
How many ohm's is the redistor.
@@wallywatkins6745 - 10 ohms
What is the color code on the resistor. Its hard to make out the colors from the video. Is that red black black silver?
Hang on , it should be a 10 ohm resistor. Initially, I thought it was 100 ohm but waltz who help me build it says it’s 10 ohm, it looks like a tan and two blue stripes
So I have to change assembly
Or just thermocouple?
Well, you at least need to change the Thermo Pile if that’s your issue that doesn’t require the entire assembly to be replaced but it’s easier. Usually when you buy them you just get an entire pilot assembly. Thanks for watching.

Which end of a hammer to hold. Guess who mom calls ..even when she saw a mouse in the kitchen. She kept her feet off the ground on a foot stool for an entire day till I got there. 😂😂😂😂
Be careful the pilot is actually lit before you test the gas valve with that 750 mv voltage source!
Yeah it blew up ! No explosion but a lot of gas burnt. That’s why they can be dangerous
You get paid by the hour?
No by the job!
The prior owner was probably a plumber
I'm thinking he worked and hung out in his garage a lot!
Thermo couples are 300 mv. Thermo piles are 750 mv
Thermocouples are 30 mV thermopiles are 750-850mV , test one you'll see. Thanks For watching!
I wish you had shown how to get the thermopyle out of the holder! I can't get the bracket to let the old thermopyle loose.
so , you twist while pushing , pryup slightly with small flat screwdriver on the thin metal housing there is a raised edge on the thermopile that catches so wiggle slightly once past that point it should slide out.
Sorry, that was accidental 👎. don't mind the thumb
Bro need a boiler not working
