You and me both Chris! If I had this info back in the day, well...maybe I would have succumb to the perils of rock and roll instead of having gotten a real job :D
I did almost exactly 3 decades of "strum strum, ho hum" before learning theory. Now I'm a guitar god compared to my 30th anniversary of playing. It's never too late "get your mind together", as Jimi says it. Every day is like a miracle now.
Absolutely brilliant as always! The great thing for me was that I recognized the triad shapes from the work you gave me in our lessons ( yes I've been working on them) thanks for all you do
Triads, one of the biggest keys to the kingdom….. They change EVERYTHING !! You will never look at the guitar in the same way again ! Best guitar teacher….. ever!
"Having triadic knowledge turns you from a guitar player, into a musician,.. who plays the guitar". That one line is so powerful! This is what every aspiring guitar player should be told right out of the gate. And all of us old hats as well.
@@basicforge Maybe a stretch, but I just felt in that moment that it was a solid statement. I wish someone had told me this when I was younger. Growing up playing metal guitar with lots of power chords, this type of playing came to me later. A few years back I started playing with a guy who was same age and background as me. I started sharing info about triads and modes which he was playing, but he had no idea what I was talking about. I was only a few steps ahead of him and we both wished we had leaned theory better when we were young. I'm 55 now and still learning. When I was young, for me, playing guitar was a release of aggression. All about being loud and having a presence on stage and off. Lots of piss and vinegar. When I was 35ish a friend gave me a guitar player magazine with lots of sheet music of George Benson. Lights when on for me then. Later I started playing Mandolin and this opened up new phrasing and picking style. I play sooo different now from when I was in my teens and 20s. (sorry for the long wind. Hope this resonates with someone). Peace.
Yes .. love this episode.. and tomo is a gentle monster.. he is a Dr Jekyll n Mr Hyde .of guitar playing.. he's humble.. but will devour ur skills..haa
Love the Explorer !!! Les Paul once said... "there are many ways to play the guitar" This!..., certainly is one of them. Excellent!!! I Love Triads!! What a brilliant way to easily Master those chords on the fretboard!
Thanks Tone! I'm glad you enjoyed this, it's great to see/hear/learn a musical example of how these ideas can be deployed. Thanks so much for your support.
Hey Chris, been awhile since I commented. Thanks for making this video! I was wondering. Do you track these Triads according to the key or according to the root of the chord? For example, locating 1 and 4 chords in C maj, Finding the C major and F major. I see C and typically would see my 4th interval and would build my triad off of the 4. But for such a long progression like this especially when it doesn't stick to a key, I could see that being much more challenging. Any advice as I progress with trying to be able to visualize these chords? I also like to embellish chords and I feel it's more challenging when I think of each chord individually as it tends to take me out of the key of the song. Thanks again so much for the video!
Great question! I use both, sometimes I'm thinking in chord "functions" like "I IV V" but a lot of the time I'm also thinking in "local roots" like "Aminor, now F, Now C then G" type of thing. get both skills, they are both valuable!
These chords are correct but they our all open chords play this song in bar minor chords and triads and youll have the song thanks for the knowledge great refresh

Do you like the Explorer? I've been mulling over buying an Explorer 70s in Ebony. My 2 favorite guitars I have now is my Gibson LP R9 and the McCarty 594 Core. How does the Explorer compare in feel in your opinion?
The explorer is the most well-balanced guitar I've ever played standing up. And it's still lighter than my Les Paul. But if I could only have one, it would be the LP R7
Listen to Chris, kids. I was a student of his long ago in Santa Fe, NM and he promised me that triads would really open up my playing ... and boy did it ever! Thanks, Chris. Good to see you haven't lost your chops, like you did your hair! 😉BTW, what happened to "Dale?" I see it's no longer on the back wall.
Hey John! I have to rotate the guitars in and out due to space. But I just moved the studio into a larger room, so subsequent videos should have all of them in there! Hope all is well!
It’s not meant as a performance per say, but really designed as a demonstration of how flexible and useful triads can be. It really has much less to do with the song and much more to do with that idea. I hope you enjoyed the video, Matthew.
All that Jazz from one chord. I had a great band teacher in Jr. high. Any chance that you have Honk-Tonk tabbed out also? Thanks for the lesson. Awesome cover!
Very cool . I reckon triads are also even more handy for allowing you to AVOID traveling all over the neck . One guitar instructor on RUclips pointed out how melody notes get lost with all the traveling and staying in one place was the ticket to pulling out melody notes within chords since your only shuffling a few notes around per chord. With all the traveling, the sound is not as beautiful apparently? I personally like traveling all over the neck . It gives me more energy as a player but to me a better triad illustration would be playing Hey Joe in literally one spot on the neck , say the 3rd fret , where you do zero traveling but still play the entire song using triads versus illustrations via traveling. Circle of 5ths is the only reason I chose hey joe but you could play any song apparently in one spot which is indeed a cooler illustration in my opinion? (Maybe because I already knew all the triads you illustrated but would possibly struggle playing that tune in one spot , say the 5th fret )
@@curiousguitarist Give me a shout out if you do ! It will make my year which needs something bright :) I play and practice all the time so you would be adding more energy to me :)

Thanks to Chris and Tomo. I tried this out out the same chord on the different three neighbour strings on the song I had been working on since the lockdown. The triads added variety to keep my musical brain interested. This lesson is very important to add spice to your guitar playing.
Yes Chris the triads area opening up the fretboard for me. Triads, especially on different sets of 3 strings, makes for more variety and musical expression. Well worth the effort of learning triads from your lessons. I learn so much from your lessons.
