    The 2001 600 xc sp was a game changer the next year. Variable exhaust, etc. I bought one new. It made more than a few bigger sleds look pretty foolish. I traded the next year for a snowcheck Edge X with all the options. Still have it. That Era of sleds was such a fun time.

    Ski doo always had the high quality sleds. I got a new Polaris every year so it didn't matter to me how many years it would go fast just that the ride , in particular how they flew over jumps , was the critical factor for the sled i was on. sure being 1st across the lake was fun , but the woods is where the boys and men seperate. I'm from a small town and that town had a Polaris dealer so that also plays a factor in the buying process.

    Just seeing this almost a year since publication, but really enjoyed it. I’ve been riding sleds since the late 60’s and still own 6 of them ranging in years from 1993 to 2018. When those sleds were new, the SRX would undoubtedly be the fastest in 660 ft - I know because I have a 2002 SRX and I ran against every one of the other sleds and easily mopped them up. I also raced MXZ’s, T-Cats, Storms, and a few other early “hypersleds”, and with no more than a Bender cold air kit in my SRX, I beat every one of them on the lake (to their horror). Maybe my SRX was just one of the exceptional ones, but they all punched well above their weight class if they were well maintained. Thankfully I still own it, and although I haven’t run it since 2013, you’ve given me the itch to do so!
    That said, all the sleds you tested were great - I had friends that rode them and we had many years of great riding on them. With my old bod nearing mid-60, I need electric start, reverse, and modern suspension to run a full day now (like you I run a Sidewinder), but I still keep my older sleds for the occasional blast or guest… and because I can’t bear to sell them! Happy riding!

    The performance of any snowmobile is based on how good the clutching is. Only way to truly test what brand was fastest is to have all four machines clutching completely rebuild. Then all four engines compression tests done to ensure each machine has factory compression specs in each cylinder etc. loved the video as always, cool to see old machines having fun again.

      No. It's close, but the XC win 99% of time. One time in my life I've seen an SRX in front of my XC, it was on really hard packed snow, and for 1 miles lake race, the winner won by a demi lenght of sled. And what did that one sled or the other was winning that day, was the driver weight. The Srx driver was 40 pounds less than me. That day, when this guy was on the XC and me on the SRX, the XC was winning. If he was on the SRX, the SRX was winning. Always by only half of sled. But every other race we did except this day, my XC always won. Theses two sled are really really close. But the weight is a big advantage for the XC.

  • @topgunmotorsports
    @topgunmotorsports 2 года назад +7

    Could hear the MXZ definitely not pulling the rpm it should, could be a number of things there, but most likely RAVE issue or broken primary spring…interested to see how she stacks up all sorted.
    The XC definitely the most surprising, but at the same time not… that 700 big block #4# one of the best motors they ever made and that edge chassis just works for being modern long travel. Get a hold of a 2002 XC7 VES to really see what that motor can do. 2001/2002 was really the pinnacle for all manufacturers IMO.
    The SRX for sure would have the longest legs of all of em and definitely some room to improve there with more setup/rider skills and a longer run, but 660ft is definitely where the real world action’s @
    The ZED! R with the ol Zuk 700 was the laziest of the bunch as expected, but still a super clean sled from the looks, wouldn’t pass that up either.

    Great video! Was bummed my old MXZ 700 didn't deliver today. I had one back in the day and could beat just about anything but a Yamaha SRX 600. Give that SRX more room and its no contest. My buddy had one and I watched him beat the new 700 SRX handily. Thats why they quit selling the 600, plus they could get more for the 7. I will admit, I put UFO's in the slides and ground the slide to the same contour, reshaped my heads, changed the gear ratio, and installed a Goodwin Clutch kit. Setting my TRA to shift out at 7800 if my memory serves me right. So I sorta cheated. I even beat a Yamaha RX1! Was shocked but happy. My buddy was so cocky, Id answer back like I was King Kong with calm confidence (fake) because I really didnt know. You're dreaming if you think you can beat my 700. It all paid off. @Zachary Dinel The Ultra's were cool, but they were no match for a good running SRX 700. Especially one built after 2001. The SRX made 140hp+ vs the Ultra which didn't make much more than 110hp. The single pipe SX700 was a closer match to the Ultra. Of that era, the only triple 700 trading wins with the SRX was the Mach 1. And then a couple of years later, the Arctic Cat F7 came out and put them all on the trailer.

    My old man had the 2000 srx brand new in 99-00. They were the fastest sleds on the lake that year hands down. Not TCats, not ZRTs, not Mach Z, not any Polaris, nothing could touch them on radar right outta the box. 120 mph was what they ran stock.

    • @shperax
      @shperax 2 года назад

      I recently did a full top and bottom end rebuild on a 99 SRX 700. It was 117 on GPS. In more ideal conditions, I could see 120. I feel like sleds over time since the 90's haven't got any faster in the top speed. However, new sleds certainly get to top speed in a much shorter distance, according to my Dragy. I think the higher HP today leads to being able to run more aggressive tracks, making for a faster 0-60.

      @@jeffalleshouse9783 the 98 xc700's were the hot ticket fastest year of the pre power valve 700's, but most people by this time have updated the later 700's to 98 spec so that's why that 01 is so fast. It's been setup to run the way they should. Pretty much any 5,6,7,800 class sled when setup and prepped by dealer properly from the get go will all be very close. Other great thing about old polaris edge and wedge sleds is the p85 clutches worked so well even when neglected with maintenance that years later they still perform, where as that mxz700, guaranteed its all poor clutching performance as to why it did so bad. The compression is plenty fine for now. I would re-hone and re-ring the cyl in question just to prevent further loss down the road but its not effecting performance the way it is now.
