Great video. Learned a few new things! A note on latency. If you use any sort if plugin that has a "Lookahead" function or similar -- usually compressors, limiters and gates have this -- this will also add latency to your performance regardless of your buffer size. So make sure to turn these OFF if you're doing monitoring through Reaper. FabFilter Pro-Q for instance also has a Zero Latency setting (which is used by default). Always test your plugins for built-in latency -- most of them have ways to mitigate at the cost of a bitnof functionality.
Great video as usual! 👍 I think what I like the most from your videos is that you use real music in your demos. There are so many plugin and DAW demos on RUclips that uses crappy synth driven sample tracks that drives my nuts. 🙃
this video came right in time cuz i was having trouble with the latency lmao thank you!!!

Great Video Professor Kenny!! Please make a video about de Advance Disk I/O Button 🙏🙏 The Low Latency Mode action in reaper also works great for recordings with plugins that add latency to our recordings.
Thank you,. Thank you. Thank you. Apparently, I accidentally hit my Focusrite Scarlet's 2i2 direct monitor button and the random clicks and pops have been driving me nuts for the past three days.
Hi Mr Kenny and thank You for igniting the explorer spirit for audio awesomeness in Reaper. Since like many of us I'm switching often the buffer to meet the power of cpu with different scenarios I'd like to ask you a thing if you don't mind: there is in Reaper a 'buffer scene' a set of buttons on the interface (or keyboard shortcuts) to switch audio buffer to the most used with just one click/shortcut? (In my case the minimum 16, the maximum 1024 and the in‐betweens 128, 256, 512)
Nice stuff Kenny, but I think you should have discussed the connection Types on the interface USB, Fire wire and Thunderbolt. Also the over head on the CPU with the protocols used. Also why the higher the sample rate the lower the latency.
Hey thanks, Mr Gioia 😎 I was on Facebook asking about this not to long ago. Does the number of tracks & plugins being processed have an effect on the performance at lower buffer sizes also> If so, seems like exporting your tracks to one stereo file so that you can sing or add other instruments in a separate project might be ideal?
Wen using more than one interface, I've gotten noise on a playback track. Doesn't happen all the time but when it does, it's permanent and usually have to reset everything and start over with the recording. I'm using an SSL 2 and Zoom R8 as AIs, along with an ASIO4ALL driver and defaulting to a 512 buffer. Problem is always with a channel on the R8. I finally had to discontinue using the R8 but would still like to increase my channels back to 4 if possible.
You mean adjust it in REAPER instead of adjusting in your interfaces's software? Mostly convenience. If you're changing it a bunch, you can stay in REAPER.
There is distortion between 5:00 and 5:30, in this video.. both your audio and the repear project. It's sort of wobbly, underwater sounding, on certain words (complex syllable changes). What is this? And how to remove it? I hear it in my recordings on certain words like 'developed'. Thanks!
I'm using Garritan CFX with M1 Pro (10 cpu, 8 performance and 2 efficiency cores) and Motu M4. However, I cannot ever get the buffer size under 1024 without having popping sounds. My computer can handle buffer size at 128 while using Ableton Live. I don't know what the issue is.
Great video Kenny. I've had an odd problem with latency since upgrading from Windows 10 to 11. I wonder whether the collective wisdom of the Reaper Mania world can help? I use a Behringer UMC404. I have had zero problems with it in 6 years of use. I usually run it with a buffer setting of 64. This gives me an output latency of 3.5ms. The problem is when I first switch the PC on. The latency increases to 17.5ms. If I then simply select another buffer value, then immediately return it back to 64, where it started, the latency then drops back down to 3.5ms. It's not a major issue but annoying when I forget to check it. I've checked that I am using all the latest drivers. Any help very much appreciated. Thanks 😊
Is there a way to manually assign more RAM for use in Reaper. I have a reasonably powerful computer and I want to make sure reaper is making the most of it. Or does it normally just take as much juice as your system has to spare?
Hi Kenny! I'm here desperate to ask you for help with the Reaper settings regarding my midi controller. I have a Novation Launchkey 37 that I'm mapping so that each key corresponds to a specific action. In particular I'm having problems with the two movement arrows on the controller that I would like to map to go from one region to another in the Reaper session (the action is "go to start of next/previous region"): unfortunately the "soft" keys the controller gets "double" input when I press and when I release, causing me to skip 2 regions at once and it drives me crazy. Have you ever had this problem, and if so, how can I fix it? Thanks :)
I swear to god I have my Interface's driver (M-Audio M-Track 2x2m) set to 16 samples. NO PLUGINS TURNED ON, only in the session but disabled. I STILL get Latency enough to throw someone off when they are Singing/Rapping. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO IN ORDER TO GET LOWEST DELAY POSSIBLE? My system is definitely strong enough to Run these, because it's a laptop with really good parts (Asus Tuf Gaming A15 {Ryzen 9,16gbs ram, etc.} ).
I tested performance meter today for the first time. But RT xruns and media xruns just remain as 0 even tho i heard lots of buffer click noises... and yellow flash has never showned.. why it doesnt work on my computer?
"Request Block Size" I don't see that drop down as an option. I have a PC, do you have a video for this issue that comes up on PC's? Thanks. I have a major glitch. My audio files keep spazing out
Kenny eh buddy when I switch my Scarlett to direct monitoring my guitar sound splits I can hear my distorted guitar but can hear the clean signal as well any idea wats going on?
Hello very kind Thank you for this video. I unfortunately broke my PC and now with the new PC I have problems and I can no longer optimize Asio4all with Reaper the problem is that I hear the crashes even if I only have the Reaper program open. If instead I open For example in recording even a Google Chrome page makes very loud noises while before I could do anything, even in recording for example listening to RUclips a melody and recording it directly in reaper singing or playing. Would you be so kind as to help me? I tried to set even more than 1024 for the buffer but still nothing works. windows 11, asio4all, m-audio 2x2m. I thought it was the PC, so I returned it and got one that cost more but it has the same problem. in the previous HP I only installed Asio4all and set it to 1024 and everything worked (even RUclips together with the recording in Reaper). thanks
Yet again....the Oracle delivers. Every video = useful new knowledge. Cheers Kenny...awesome!!

Good point.
I thought I knew pretty much everything about latency, but as usual there are new things to learn. Always a pleasant surprise. Thanks.
Thanks , the performance meter for fine tuning is really nice and I just discovered how to get lower latency . Rock on Kenny !
Thank you. That was really helpful. Finally I can stop worrying about the horrible distorted sounds of my project.
Great video as usual! 👍 I think what I like the most from your videos is that you use real music in your demos. There are so many plugin and DAW demos on RUclips that uses crappy synth driven sample tracks that drives my nuts. 🙃
Thank you. I do take the time to find songs I like and work for the feature I'm showing. Thanks.
That was cool ! I just switched to a new PC and I can leave it at 64 and it's the most amazing feeling ever

I think this is the video I have been waiting for. Thank you.
Needed this lesson for sure! ~ Thank you :)
It's true i like Reaper because of your videos✌
Wow, thanks for this! I didn't know the option of the buffer for high speed discs. I tried and it's amazing 😍
Are you using an SSD as your hard drive? And what did you set it to?
@@REAPERMania I'm using an m.2 ssd that is very fast and I have set it in 400ms. Big difference in the response 👍
Love this video ... Make more videos about settings options.
Love your channel, you the man!
Really useful Kenny. Excellent video. Thank you
Thanks for making this really clear 🤘
you're just awesome!🙏🙏 great videos as usual and this one is short and clear. thanks
That was LONG overdue...Thank you!

i usually run at 64 while recording drums (and everything else). Sometimes if I get up tp 50 tracks I have to bump up to 128. But it's rare.
Excellent!
awesomeness delivered with coolness - thx man :)
Nice! Thanks for the heads up.

32 FX on vocals and track 6 &&? Is that just for the purpose of the video?
yup
Thanks Kenny. Very interesting. A question why would you prefer adjusting the latency in Reaper to having the interface do all the work?
You mean adjust it in REAPER instead of adjusting in your interfaces's software? Mostly convenience. If you're changing it a bunch, you can stay in REAPER.
Thanks very much for your promp reply.
Cool video! If I may ask how do you record reaper on Mac? Greetings from Finland!
Screenflow is the capture and editing software I use.

Hi Kenny. Can you record at one buffer size for low latency then change to a different buffer for mixing, say to run more plugins?

Yes. You're hearing the clean signal thru direct monitoring. Turn that off if you're using plugins to get your guitar sound.
@@REAPERMania I was trying to get rid of some of the latency I guess just lowering my buffer size should work

When I make 128, it sizzles. When it is 256, no sizzling. However, my latency is 6.2 /8.2 , ı guess it is too much for recording sir.
Oh, Scarlett 2!2!!!!!
Thanks Kenny!
