My mom died suddenly, at home, in her bed. My twin daughters, who were only 11 at the time, were in bed with her, one was holding her hand when she died. They are the ones who found her the next morning. As awful as that was for them, I have told them many times how grateful I am that mom had people who loved her, with her when she died.
Her book is wonderful. A few months after I read it, I got the audio book as well. hearing her read it adds another great dimension to her experiences.
I love Caitlins videos because of the way she talks about death. Matter of fact, and respectfully. I am 55 years old, and I have health issues. Her videos have helped me open up conversation with my daughter about my last wishes. She is awesome.
I hear you! I have health issues and take too many pills and my daughter told me that in the last year I talk to her too much about my death plan wishes. 😥😅
Timothy Blackburn she's not a devil worshiper, in fact she's not religious whatsoever. Those "weird as fuck" people will be preparing your cadaver and that of those you love.
Timothy Blackburn The problem, bud, is that I don't give a single shit about your conservative, trump supporting opinions. The conversation is about a mortician, not whatever the fuck you just tried to convey in that blob of text. I believe you're trying to express "corpse" and "occult". Caitlyn isn't an occultist. She's atheistic and not involved in in the occult. Additionally, she has never mentioned her sexuality. You are enumerating random topics that you are judgmental about in a conversation in which they aren't relevant.
Timothy Blackburn by "showed her true colors" ...you mean, by having a different opinion that you? You're a trump supporter? Great! Go watch and comment on his videos where what you are saying might be relevant. Just to be clear, the vast majority of America would disagree with a trump supporter. You can't just close out everyone for having a different view than you. Well, you can, but what a boring life. And progressives, such as herself, do NOT think that 1a applies to only them. Most feel that everyone has a right to say what they want. It's when it comes to racist or sexist people on the right that speak on hate and discrimination, then no, no the left does not agree that hate speech is protected under 1a, nor is the right to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation or what they do with their own personal sex life as, and with, consenting adults that doesn't affect you at all... other than that, yeah 1a away buddy... the left (generally speaking..as in the vast majority) doesn't give a crap about your opinion...
My Aunt Effie, who died from a fall in 1921 at the age of seven, died in a hospital and, was laid out in the parlor of my grandparent's house. I used to think this was creepy, but now I view it as a comforting way for them to say good-bye to their only daughter.
Due to covid-19 lockdown we've been overseas with family when my MIL passed away. Initially, she was in ICU after a heart attack but she demanded to be taken home. The doctor released her and she was brought home by ambulance. After a long sleep, she walked, talked and was made comfortable by family. In groups of 3, many relatives visited her for the 11 days til she died in her sleep. Her home vigil will last 5 days. After the chaos of her husband's funeral 25 years ago, she pre-planned and paid for her own funeral, cremation, urn, and columbaria. RIP 💐💐
For over the past 10 yrs I have been preoccupied with death in a sense that I wondered why we are so far removed from it in our culture. I have been following Caitlin for about a year now and enjoy her style of bringing death to the surface for me. Her humor overtones in her videos have helped my transition from my own quiet curiosity of death to developing my own philosophy about it. I am enjoying the journey and research more and more about it.
I love how very personable she is and open. I am heading to the bookstore tonight an now i see theres an audio tape , too I will look for that as well. I love all of her videos and enjoy listening to her talking about death and the profession. I wish that Mary Roach did videos like this.
Tisha I did not like MR's book, Gulp or MR's writing style. It's funny people often compare Ms Doughty to her because they both write about "taboo" subjects. I think MR comes off as cold and apathetic whereas CD seems warm and compassionate.
I love that she took this resoundingly negative experience and dove right in to deal with it, and she's taking everybody down with her (undertaking pun).
There are so many correlations between the change in our attitude towards death and the change in our attitude towards birth. These two life events have moved from homes and families to sterile hospitals and 'professionals' in majority of cases. There are so many similarities between the two events when you really get thinking about it.
I have read both of your books, and am trying to get my family to be more open about the death experience. May I also say I love being one of your Deathlings
I know what you mean about seeing someone fall , Caitlin . Back in the early 1980's , We were walking back to a car park , when some Guy decided to leap from the top of our local , Toys R Us . Four storeys up . He landed about twenty feet in front of us . A sound that I will never forget .
I love her and everything she stands for! I've always been interested in death, and I think I was just born that way. I never felt quite like a goth, so I love the expression "Deathling". Finally a label I can identify with!
I'm from Mexico and in there everything is I would say emotionally more easy the death cause when the person died everything turn so quickly like the person died, we call the funeral home but you can have the chance either have the body in actually the funeral home or in your own house I feel the second is better cause is like more intimate with the family, so after 1 night or 2 is mostly 1 we take the body to the cementery and that is all, I feel that in the us is more torturous the way that you relative has to be away from you for the services and actually has to pass several days until the final farewell is just to much psychologically for me! I guess cause you can be to devastated to see your relative to visit just for couple hours go home and turn the next day to the same not be able to be with them they last moments before being cremated or put down on the ground. That is just my opinion
My family is also from Mexico and it seems as if the viewing and the burial are too fast. I like having the option to spend a couple of days saying goodbye to the person and it helps me to accept that the person is dead.
How funny you mention the Chinese having “professional mourners...like the Laker Girls. Just hours ago, the Lakers won the 2020 NBA championship! Woo hoo! Where’s my tiki torch. Let me burn down the city 🙄 Oh God. 🤬 I’d like the city cancel any victory parade (dare they have one in the pandemic). But, I digress. Have you been to a Laker game at the Fabulous Forum in Inglewood? The house announcer announces the Laker Girls when they come on, or finish a dance routine. “The Laker Girrrrrrrrrrrrrls.” In a low baritone voice. I think you would be a great announcer.😉👍✌️🤙
Your deathlings adore you Caitlin.
Shes a weirdo
I'm a simple person, I see "Caitlin Doughty," I click.

i think this is a wonderful way to help your children understand death and not be afraid because of the experience.
Oh my gosh. ANY thing I can read/see/hear about Caitlyn, I'M HERE. #SelfDeclaredDeathling
Her book is wonderful. A few months after I read it, I got the audio book as well. hearing her read it adds another great dimension to her experiences.
I could listen to her for hours.

Fantastic book! She has a great way of giving the reader a glimpse of the curious world of cremation and death. Consider reading it!
the mortuary is my every day. it's refreshing to listen to someone talk about the same career you're in.

Love her! I do not have the book yet but I will be ordering it and I can not wait to read it!
I love her! I bet that book is awesome.

I love that she took this resoundingly negative experience and dove right in to deal with it, and she's taking everybody down with her (undertaking pun).

I love her hair 😍 and HER, of course!

I think Caitlin is doing very important work; I don't think the taboos we have about death are healthy.

I feel you! Want to see open raw grief go to a black funeral.
mzspargo or a korean one lol
3:05 "Natural Morbidity" so much better than the other kind.
Are cremertories the same in the UK?
I love her and everything she stands for! I've always been interested in death, and I think I was just born that way. I never felt quite like a goth, so I love the expression "Deathling". Finally a label I can identify with!
You are NOT weird, you give peace and reality about death

I love your honesty. I am MUCH better thinking of my death now.
What is this fryyyyyyy?
But on another note, lovely interview as always, insightful and death positive.
you can get hired mourners in Greece too, almost exclusively anonymous old women. and also, it works.
Oakland.......damn.
I always try to be around dead bodies.
U so mature xx
Keep your friends close.
I live in FL,where are My Goth peeps?
Just wondering not being sarcastic or anything...have you embalmed and do you know how?
She is a licensed embalmer, so yes she knows how.

Caitlin Daughty is gorgeous
Laker Girls for funerals! Lol.
What ‘s with the low, gravely voice?
I love you, but dang. Vocal fry here.
