  • Sony A7iii Review for Wedding Photographers. A comprehensive review of the Sony A7iii by wedding photographer Adam Johnson (ARJ Photography www.arj-photo.co.uk) covering all aspects of how he uses the Sony A7iii for wedding photography.
    It's not a technical review, nor is it all encompassing but it is pretty comprehensive in what Adam does cover, including:
    How he uses the EVF, LCD and focus systems
    Why he hardly ever use silent mode
    The miracle of anti-flicker
    Full run-down of his custom button setup
    The menu options you need to change from their default settings
    The six million and two reasons why he thinks this is the best camera for wedding photography (mild exaggeration... maybe)

    What an amazing video! I do weddings from 10 years on 5dmkiii and 2 weeks ago decided to sell everything and switch to a7iii with 17-28 35 85. What an amazing little camera. I really love that it's so light and af is on different level. Your video was really helpful in terms of menus and options. Well done.

    This was an awesome, real world, no nonsense review. Thank you so much for doing it. I foolishly dived in to Sony early with the A7r followed by the addition of an A6000 & then an A7ii. Each purchased in the hope that it would improve on the performance of the last and was thoroughly disappointed by all. I switched to Fuji and found them better in terms of af reliability but still not great for various reasons. Have been using Nikon's now for the last 8 months as I know I can rely on the focus to a certain standard..no inexplicable focus mishaps or refusal to acquire focus. But now after so much talk of the latest Sony's being so good, I have been thinking of returning and it's great to get your perspective as a real world user. Everybody raves about eye af but I had my doubts about it in real world wedding situations. So it's great to hear your thoughts on that and that your satisfaction with other regular modes is as high as peoples claimed delight with eye af. Thanks again, will definitely subscribe. 😊

    ive been using the a73 since March and only now you have taught me about focus hold, its a revelation to me as i am primarily old school af-s focus recompose, i do not feel entirely confident in the af-c focus hold approach when light is low but i am very excited to put this into practice. the upcoming update will be interesting too with eye af on the half press. one thing i am unsure about is your use of touch pad/panel, so many times i have brought the camera up to take a shot and the focus box is elsewhere than where it should be, plus its hard to see, so its a case of in a split sec trying to figure out why the camera isn't focussing, realising the box is off and hitting the joystick. Even when touch is disabled the box still somehow wanders; this goes for the camera in general tbf, the buttons are way to easy to press accidentally, crazy ISO's, lifting up to take and instinctive shot only to be met with a random submenu which knocked my concentration. the ease of miss-pressing is my biggest gripe with the camera, but regardless i still love it even thought ive wanted to kill it. I use a holdfast moneymaker which can definitely be a contributory factor but it never happened with my 5D. thanks for the review/tips, being an af-s guy ive never had the use of eye-af conveniently before.

    The screen does only tilt 45' or so in the down direction but if you need more when doing overhead shots, then you can flip the camera upside down which gives you 90' tilt (and allows you to hold the camera higher & makes it easier to press the shutter button) but the camera knows it's upside down and it takes the pics the right way around. Try it, you'll see what I mean. Also works with A6500.

    For a photographer this review is so much more useful than all the technical bogus out there. It answers questions about usability and that’s what a working photographer worries about. Not small differences in technical abilities 😴 thanks sad that don’t give the views to match. The bogus gets the views 😂

I would have bought to 2 A7III's if I had put propoer thought into it (felt I was doing the right thing, by bringing in variation and additional capacity)

      Michael Maurer sadly the a7iii doesn’t qualify as a pro body for the Sony pro support unless you’ve also got one of their “a” grade bodies like an a9. It sucks and it’s stupid and they need to change it.

    Hi Adam! Really nice review! I can relate to all mentioned things about this camera, especially to Silent Shutter, learned it in a hard way :) Was photographing wedding, putted in Silent mode in Church cause didn't wanted to ruin the quiet moments and ended up with a few banding shots, especially it ruined the first kiss shot :) after that, no Silent mode again. But nevertheless, best camera I have owned so far.

    Thanks SO much for this. Been using this camera for video only and now have sold my 5d iv and gonna shoot with this for weddings. I noticed that you don't have a custom button set to toggle between the viewfinder and the screen. I know you said you use the screen 90percent of the time but how do you switch quickly between the two? Cheers and awesome info for a canon converter.

    • @NineDotsCo
      @NineDotsCo  3 года назад +1

      Hey! Good news! If you put your eye to the viewfinder it auto switches to viewfinder, and if you take your eye away it switches back to LCD... So no button needed. A useful hack if you want to make sure that override doesn't happen, just pop the screen out a tiny bit and it'll stay on LCD even if something goes close to the viewfinder. Can be handy!

  • @danielktype

    great review~ I've been using a7iii about 3month, definitely agree with the cons you've mentioned. I'm not sure others are experiencing, but my eyes get really tired looking at the evf. Also looking for a flash that has af assist working other than sony brand.

    • @NineDotsCo
      @NineDotsCo  5 лет назад +1

      daniel kim yeah I’ve heard of people having a bit of eye strain from the EVF but I’m using the LCD mostly so haven’t noticed that. Not sure about flashes with AF assist as I rarely use flash on camera.

      Haha I know people tell me this. I want to focus on what I want to focus on and as I often shoot wide angle, there can be many faces in frame including bride and groom so even registering their faces wouldn't get around it. I'm just too much of a control freak!

    Thanks Adam. The best overview of the A7iii I have seen yet. Gave me some great tips. I've had an A7Riii (from a Nikon) for a few month nows and have found the autofocus setup complicated and fail for me in most cases making me go back to centre focus as on my old Nikon. I have absolutely failed to get centre lock on to work and had eye focus settle on tables and people in the corner! Seeing all these glowing reviews I wonder if my A7R has a fault or if you read this......are some of the settings lens specific? Thanks Dave. Will try your get out of jail button setup. Am I the only person to be very disappointed with this camera?

    • @daveridge3990
      @daveridge3990 4 года назад

      Further to the above comments I note that many of my settings are similar to yours except the silent shooting which I have no problem with. Didn't understand what banding was until your video and in all the thousands of photo's I've taken I have only one curved snooker cue due to not using the mechanical shutter!

    • @NineDotsCo
      @NineDotsCo  4 года назад

      Hey Dave! That's weird about focus not locking on - maybe get whoever you bought it from to take a look? I did have the a7r3 at first and found focus a bit worse than a73 but not significantly... Worth getting it checked. Never had that with eyeAF either. So yeah, get someone to give it the once over. Can highly recommend Fixation.
      Only one nuance of the AF system and it's more of a mirrorless thing than a Sony thing is that in AF-C mode, the narrower your aperture, the less snappy focus will be, because it's real-time focusing straight from the sensor, the shallower the DOF the easier it is for the camera to determine edges and therefore focus. I've had real issues focusing at f8, f16 etc. The way around this is to use AF-S rather than AF-C because in AF-S mode the camera briefly stops down to wide open to gain focus.

    Excellent !! I am making the change from my 6D. AF and DR are the primary drivers. I considered 5D iv but in all my research ( lots of You Tubes ) I have be more and more convinced. You have really driven this home for me. I have Sigma Primes, 35, 50, 135 an old model sigma 85 which I will replace first with the amazing ( according lots of reviews ) with the Sony 85 f8. With the apc mode my 135 becomes about 230 which would be awesome for the wedding ceremony especially at 2.0 :-) THANKS... Subbed. BTW this came up on my RUclips home page.

      Great news! I think you'll be astounded by the AF compared to the 6D. I was 5Diii before this, and was so underwhelmed by the 5Div when it came out. If you plan to use adapters with your old lenses on the Sony though you won't get the full AF experience like with native lenses as you'll see if you buy the Sony 85. Good luck with the switch!

    Nice review. I have an a7iii and definitely picked up a few tips. I've found it tough to drop my Canons as I'm so used to them and how they perform for me. I'll definitely be trying out some of these settings and your technique for focusing. I'd found the touchscreen annoying as it was moving around by itself, but I guess I'm still too used to how a traditional DSLR works in that area.

    I was told that if you shoot at 1/100 or below that there would be no banding in silent mode. Also, if use SONY or Godox flash for SONY. It turns the live view special effects off automatically.
    For me, the biggest bug is that the focus point is light grey. I wished it was colored.

By the way I have a question if you don't mind : you mentioned that in average you shoot between 7000 to 10.000 during a wedding...and I wonder how you manage to edit such a huge number of shots especially if you shoot RAW? even if it is for the sake of quickly getting through them to pick the ones you like most it's gonna take ages!!!!

    The front curtain shutter also is susceptible to banding, but less than the silent shutter. This mostly will only happen, for example, when there is a projector in the background, or some very flickery led lights (ex: concerts). But 99% of the time it is the best shutter mode.

      Justin Worrall I strongly believe in using two of the same camera. Have you considered leasing for the second body? I can recommend Photolease. I know people rave about the Sony a6500 but I’ve never tried it. Or maybe pick up a second hand a72/a7r2 so you can use the same lenses on both :)

    I went back through the photos you posted. I just don't understand, how did you get those sharp images with 1/30 shutter speed and 6400 ISO F1.8? I shot a wedding with 1/160 shutter and 5000 ISO F1.4, yet my images are a bit blurry and not sharp. Same camera, F1.4. Can you please explain or share more information ?

    • @NineDotsCo
      @NineDotsCo  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Kai! Are your shots blurry from camera shake or subject movement or are they out of focus? There are so many factors which can spoil a shot. If I'm shooting slower shutter speeds then I pin my elbows to my chest and control my breathing to make sure the camera is as still as possible. Shooting fast moving subjects is impossible but if they're still or not moving much then 1/30 should often be ok. If it's just out of focus then it could be the lens you're using or you might have moved a little after composing the shot.

  • @martinbreslow1401
    @martinbreslow1401 5 лет назад +1

    I just want to check what I understand you do for flash and why. With flash you pre-set the aperture and shutter speed manually. In the menus, you want the evf to operate as a night vision scope, so you make that change in the menu which you show?

    • @NineDotsCo
      @NineDotsCo  5 лет назад

      Yes exactly that - but to be clear it's only because I'm using flashes/triggers which DON'T have the correct hotshoe for this camera. If I was using flashes/triggers with the Sony hotshoe, then it would automatically turn setting effect off.
