  • Today marked 50 years since the event which started the Troubles in Northern Ireland as British troops were deployed on the streets to quell violence between the Catholic community and the Royal Ulster Constabulary.(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    No-one here needs reminding about the years that followed.
    Many thought those days had long gone after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, but Brexit - and specifically talk of a hard border - has brought murmurs of division back into conversations.
    And there are many who fear a return to violence.

      Nick Musselle because the DUP were against the GFA in the first place. The DUP would like nothing more than a hard border with the Republic because then the possibility of Irish reunification can’t happen. It means Unionists have won and Republicans have lost because there will be a hard border between NI and the ROI, which is what unionists have always wanted.

      @Jack The Film Fanatic
      Complete and utter nonsense, from beginning to end.
      I really do not have the time to fillet every ignorant sentence.
      However, your claim that "E.U. Forced huge Bank debt on Ireland and they gave up their laws and way of life to them" is egregious tosh.
      The Irish bailout was required to deal with a comprehensive failure by successive Irish governments to regulate the Irish housing market and the Irish financial sector.
      No, the Irish people did NOT give "...up their laws and way of life to them." The Constitution remains, the legal system functions, the Dáil still sits, and Irish life and culture goes on, with a population which enjoys an increasingly better standard of living than the UK can offer its subjects.
      By the way, the RoI has been out of the bailout since the 15th of December 2013. Since then, Ireland has been able to borrow money at lower rates than the UK.

    • @arthurgoodness7865
      @arthurgoodness7865 4 года назад +10

      @Jack The Film Fanatic The UK have one land border with the EU and that is on the island of Ireland. UK Brexit policy will make it necessary for Ireland to put up border controls because NI will no longer be in the EU. One way to avoid this border is the current WA and the backstop but the UK are refusing to accept this approach.
      So SF are going to push for a border poll - which they will probably get. The unionist/loyalist paramilitaries will oppose this strongly with whatever means necessary. So the threat of violence is a real one. This could easily lead to bloodshed on both sides of the border.
      So the UK voted for Brexit. The UK government knew about the necessity of a border between north and south Ireland but yet they never built an approach into their negotiations that would resolve this very obvious issue. So the backstop became the only show in town. The UK knew the EU regulations in relation to land borders with non-EU countries - they have been in the EU long enough. This issue isn't new, the EU hasn't just made it up to annoy the UK. The UK government have acted disgracefully and instead of finding a solution they are defending their stance by saying we are not going to put up a border it is the EU. It would be funny if it wasn't so serious. If unionist/loyalist paramilitaries cross the border and bomb irish towns because of a border poll, then the blame will lay at the UK's door. But they don't care so long as they get their Brexit. Any fallout and they will just blame the EU - what a mature and sensible government you have in the UK.

    As an outsider, all I can think when I see this is that a united Ireland would be a lot better than this mess. I know that people have different views on what would be the ideal case for Northern Ireland, but if you look at it in a practical way, it does seem better to have a border in the sea than on land. Why go through this mess every other decade because the British PM happens to be an idiot? Borders are human inventions and the land itself in the UK won't go away just because you leave it politically.

    The fact that so many people in power in Westminster seemed to have no knowledge, no interest, no historical perspective of Ireland and the troubles in Northern Ireland, just shows how arrogant they are. During the Brexit referendum Ireland and the border was never mentioned, except maybe as a brief afterthought... and now we have people in Government like Priti Patel, who things it's a strategy to starve Irish into submission so they leave the EU, and Boris Johnson who basically only cares about the DUP. Well if they thought they'd be protecting the union... think again, Scotland is as good as independent and a united Ireland will follow.

      @Fhjthnl Lol Iuyo It's not immigrants or the EU that threatens your identity or country, it's your own self. Neither immigrants nor the EU, nor Ireland have the power over England that it's own ruling elite have.... can we help it that those who are in the driving seat are suicidal.
      UK's international power is now based on it's economic clout, not on overseas territorial colonies, the weaker the economy gets, the less power the UK will have, the less independence it will have. Even hard brexiteers have admitted to me there will be economic damage.
      All you will end up with a hard Brexit is a damaged UK, damaged economy, damaged society, damaged international relationships, and a vassal statelet of Trump's white house, who's motto is America first... congratulations!
      I'm not dismissing working class people who voted Brexit had concerns and issues they were unhappy about... but Brexit will solve none of them, and those liars at the top who misguide them, will be very oppressive indeed on anyone lower than their own ruling elite..... out of the frying pan, into the fire.

      May make it worse. Nationalists can be every bit as narrow minded and arrogant as their loyalist counterparts, and Sinn Fein triumphalism and arrogance could well reignite a loyalist movement. Even now that bald dude couldnt hide his contempt for Britain. And most people down south couldnt give a damn one way or the other. Both factions of the north are fighting to be part of two separate entities who dont really care about them. Why not an independent state without shitty divisive flags and stupid marching bands and songs. Thats the best way forward imo.

    There will probably be a porous border, a border in name only. But as for the rest of the EU.. who knows. Northern Ireland should really be allowed to have a finger in each pie and negotiate for themselves, however this is probably going to result in the independence question once more.
    I don't think there will be widespread violence, there's always nasty little scumbags that just want to cause upset but they can be discounted for what they are. The majority do not want the return to violence and that tends to be the deciding factor in matters like this.

    • @MissFoxification
      @MissFoxification 4 года назад

      @DML1888 By scumbags I mean the kind of people that always throw rocks and set fire to cars in protests. I mean the kind of people who deliberately destroy everything they can. They want trouble, they will be the ones to cause it.
      Not "local people", if you want to engage with me don't twist my words and attribute your own narratives in an attempt to make me look bad.
      I understand what is going on and I would not be happy with it either.
      How am I supposed to know what is going to happen with certainty? If everyone got what they wanted all of Ireland would be permitted to trade with the EU as an EU member, trade across Ireland would be without restricton and negotiate trade with the rest of the UK. That would be nice but... it's never so simple.

    The British military and security forces were not a neutral force trying to quell the violence between IRA and unionist paramilitary organizations. Among the things that they did was that they extracted information from IRA suspects by torture, and passed the names of Catholics to be murdered to unionist terrorists, so that the latter would eliminate them. Sometimes British security forces themselves murdered Catholics, because they were absolutely above the law. If the police tried to investigate, they were told not to. No wonder the Catholic population saw the IRA as their defenders, and the British as their enemy.

      You present me with all the evidence I need to corroborate my point: the EU STARTED with 'their red lines' before negotiations even began, and the EU KNEW those 'red lines' would NOT be acceptable to the British Parliament!
      Take a look at the Vote Tallies for ALL 3 Rejections of the EU's 'red lines'!
      Labor rejected the EU red lines. Libs rejected EU red lines. Tories rejected EU red lines.
      The rejection was NOT just simply, as Channel 4 and other Remainers wish to present, solely a Tory responsibility!
      The numbers tell the tale: the EU wanted Great Britain on its KNEES, kowtowing to Brussels, and that is the stance they took from the very beginning.
      When two parties come to the table to negotiate 'in good faith', they do NOT bring 'red lines' and certainly do NOT shout those red lines loudly and repeatedly in the media, which is what Barnier, Juncker, et al, exactly did!
      The EU has NEVER negotiated 'in good faith', and you've proven it for me, as does the public record of EU speeches, interviews, etc.
      World Trade Organization Terms are NOT 'crashing out', and the very same people who lamented from the roof tops, promising dire consequences and the sky falling IF Great Britain did NOT abandon the pound in favor of the Euro, are the SAME voices promising death and destruction, and 'woe unto us' calamity, should GB leave on WTO Terms.

      Sadly, I see you are letting severe personal biases enter the fray in this matter.
      You clearly do NOT believe in allowing empirical evidence and facts to lead the way in finding solutions to any given problem, certainly not in the matter of economics.
      You sound as if you might believe in that worst of all political evils, socialism. Socialism, empirically speaking, leads in every case, to the utter demise of the individual's conscious understanding of 'self worth', and of understanding that a day's labour provides the impetus which leads to a positive view of self worth.
      NOTHING except the Love of God in this life, is 'free': everything must be earned outside that Love, everything outside that Love, has a cost thereto attached.
      The Cradle of Socialism, Russia/Soviet Union, proved beyond any doubt, that socialism cannot work, because the foundational doctrines of socialism deny and reject human nature as it exists in reality.
      Socialism, whatever the form and format, is a religion based on personally subjective biases, which can never be fulfilled, thus precipitating horrific violence against those it purports to support, once those individuals conclude that they will NEVER be the beneficiaries of socialist 'programs'.
      Russia, Red China, North Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, all are prime examples of socialism at its worst.
      Labour under Corbyn has proven just how quickly, and how ugly, socialism leads people into denigrating others, based upon 'category' and that regardless of 'how it looks', the people in certain categories will be pursued, demonized, denigrated, and attacked, first verbally and soon physically, because they belong to an 'undesirable' group.'
      Corbyn's hatred of Jews and of Israel is the most recent example of just how far a Western Party can fall, when it is based on the relativism of socialism. Corbyn's Purge of pro-Jewish MP's, bureaucrats, and affiliates within Labour, prove my point, and it shall only get WORSE!
      You however, will no doubt reject these verifiable facts and empiricism, because they do NOT fit your world view and certainly not the premises upon which you predicate your world view.
      Great Britain could very well find itself in the middle of first a political civil war, and then, with a Sharia Jihadist push at just the right moment, a blood in the streets fighting civil war.
      Historically speaking, you'd be surprised just how thin is the veneer of 'civilization' when innocents are demeaned, then violence is used against them without good reason; which the non-Muslim populations (many non-white) of Great Britain are now feeling from Labour, and the Govt. bureaucrats who support Labour.
