You might consider ribbed socks, they are pretty forgiving for fit. DRK everyday sock pattern is pretty good and the all over rib on the foot doesn't bother me at all. Good luck on your sock journey!

Hi Leslie! I actually have that sock in my library…I am sort of regretting not doing that one, as I figure ribbing by nature gives a snugger fit. But that’s ok! Next time I definitely will. Toe up is slightly intimidating for some reason.

To socks-shy knitters I warmly recommend knitting patterns with the Fleegle heel: this construction feels great on your feet without the actual heel tip landing exactly at a certain part of the knitted sock sack. This is important even if you do your knitting exactly right but then the sock usually stretches with wear and then shrinks a bit after each wash. Or if you knit socks for someone you can not or do not want constantly check the fit while knitting it. Or if you knit a sock for a child that is still growing. Short rows heels and heel flaps assume that your heel fits exactly in the foreseen spot, and it is a pain if the knitted heel scrambles below or above the actual heel....
Of course, it does not need to be Fleegle Fleegle heel, e.g. Bear Paw DK socks by Andrea Mowry are similar in its construction idea and are more suitable for the designer-appreciative chicks ;-)
I also recommend sock yarn with some silk content, especially for warmer temperatures, it are much nicer to knit and to wear.
Regarding your loose tension: work on it! Try knitting DK socks first on ridiculously thin needles. Try 3x3 ribbing instead of 1x1. Try things. Work on it. Slouchy socks are fine, but well fitting socks are superb. Your socks should feel a bit too small, or quite too small. Work on your tension, small needles, work on every stitch. If you have problems with tension only for the ribbing, try garter instead of ribbing, like the free pattern Troll-socks by Maja Karlsson.
    Cheers!

On the same vein as your "Oh how human of me" mantra, this quote from Anne Wilson Schaef I recently read struck me like a thunderbolt: “Perfectionism is self-abuse of the highest order.” I repeat this sentence to myself many times a day, whether it is accepting a tiny, tiny error in my knitting, as I play some wrong notes while attempting to master Bach partitas at the piano, or any other pursuit. I am trying very hard not to expect perfection in any aspect of my life because that is, indeed, self-abuse.

I love this so much. It’s the best part of getting older-realizing you are worthy of compassion and empathy as much as anyone else, and that its your job to protect yourself. There’s so much automatic negative self-talk running through our brains.

Summer Lee has a tighter gauge than other sock designers. I usually have to go down to a 1.5mm/000 or 1.75mm/00 to get gauge. I feel the denseness of the fabric helps them last longer.

You should definitely try it! It doesn’t take much time to redo a sock. 😊 Summer Lee has a few free sock patterns. Her basic sock has a gauge of 40 stitches for 4”. I have skinnier than average calves/ankles and the circumference of her sock is noticeably tighter and doesn’t fall down on me.

    Hi
I agree with you regarding Summer ! She is a joy to watch and see her makes. Some of her patterns are in my cart on ravelry. I have knit quite a few pairs of socks but I still feel like rookie. I have the same gauge & tension problem with a 1x1 rib so I just knit all my socks with 2x2 rib now- problem solved and I love knitting 2x2. Use stitch markers every 10 rows and create your own sock recipe that you like that fits your foot. I think knowing my foot is 56 rows or leg is 20 blah blah makes the knitting go faster somehow. I Love the colors you chose for your socks! Stay cool! Blessings

I freaking LOVED Edgar Sawtelle. I need to decide whether to read the new book on my Kindle or to listen to it. 900 pages is too much for me to carry around. Socks: yes, I too have freaky sized feet. Mine are like TINY. I found success with Andrea Mowry's Everyday Socks pattern- it's been the only pattern that gives me the negative ease that I want. But: a LOT of ribbing, so less than a joyous knitting experience.

Hello, my tiny footed friend! Curious how you find Familiaris and if you chose to read or listen! I definitely will be listening as that’s the only way I can finish such a long book in a reasonable amount of time.
DRK Everyday socks are next on my list! I somehow don’t mind ribbing too much, especially if it gives a better fit.

  • @megm202

I am so late to the game! But I wanted to comment because I have the same sock knitting woes you do, I want to knit them but my gauge is very loose compared to other pattern knitters, and my feet have a less "standard" shape than others. The thing that saved me is Custom Socks by Kate Atherley. You gauge swatch, then she walks you through measuring your foot in a bunch of places, then she gives you the choice between a chart and doing the math yourself to come up with your own custom sock numbers (how many stitches to cast on, gusset stitches, how long to knit the foot etc). This finally cracked the curse for me! And she gives the option to do the socks from toe up or top down, and gives information on how to superimpose pattern details (like colorwork or textured stitches) on your custom sock numbers. Best of luck in your sock knitting adventures!

I would recommend seeking out a means to learn that way, and then if you like a stitch pattern, you can put that together with your knowledge on the best fit formula.

Leena, your James Watts top is going to beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing it. Your socks are super fun. Summer Lee has so many fun patterns and really describes things so well, often with videos to explain. So venture on, I really do believe it does take a few pair of socks before you figure out the correct “recipe” for your particular feet and find what works. My favorite lately is a free pattern called Heel Tab Shorty Socks by Larissa Gregorian. She actually has a video along with the pattern that walks you through it. My husband and I just got back from Boulder and I forget how very beautiful it is there. I am a new knitter, but I needed a tank top that turned out really well fit perfectly and I’m not a very fast but I just accept that, and I am knitting my second pair of socks And yes, it’s the Summerly sock. I signed up for her color sock club and she puts it in your Rary whenever she comes out with a new cuff color cuff you should check into that cause it’s really fun. I think you can still sign up for it because it’s all year long And the first pattern is the basic sock that she uses for all of the colorful cuffs so they’re just saved in your library and you’ll have them for all your long. It’s wonderful and your sock by the way I love all the colors. It’s beautiful yes and I love all of the colors the bright colors with the plain sock, that’s what makes it so gorgeous that’s why I think you would really like her colorful club started in August but I think you could still sign up for it and it would be fun. You said so many things. I am going get the book and read it the first one I have not And I think that’s great and if I were you, I would read the first book over to save her the second book, but it’ll also make the second book a lot more meaningful just because the first book is just so real fresh right there for when you read the second one and I think reading them back to back could be just an awesome thing. I just found your podcast not very long ago like not long ago a couple days ago.

I’m short too, 5ft 2ins. but I’m a UK size 5 which makes for quick socks! However I also knit for family members up to size 12s. I’m so glad you found Summer Lee. She is a breath of fresh air and her socks are delightful. If you need some tutorials I can highly recommend Denise (Earthtonesgirl) She has such a pleasant voice and is a great teacher. I’ve literally knitted hundreds of socks over the years, and I think there is nothing better than a well knitted plain pair of socks. Once you have mastered that, you will have the formula in your head, and you won’t even have to refer to a pattern. I joined SW’s sock KAL last year, and I really didn’t enjoy it. He does come up with some very fancy stitches, but mine came out huge too and I ended up decreasing away a lot of stitches after the heel flap and knitting plain feet. With practice you will find your own preferred needle sizes and your own tailor made formula. It is so worth it! Enjoy the journey. 💚💛💜❤️🧡

I hope you like your sock knitting. The colors you picked are so pretty! I wonder why you decided on a slouch sock since you discussed being concerned that the socks will be too loose? My thought was that slouch socks are loose. I really like the Vanilla Sock pattern by The Crazy Sock Lady. Love your content and hearing your thoughts and seeing your beautiful knits.

Hi again! I am now doubting my choice!! I think I picked it because I figured I’d lean into the looseness as a design feature rather than flaw. Honestly its fitting quite nicely so far! I almost ripped it out, but I’m glad I didn’t. I’m hoping if I need a little more tightness in the cuff, I’ll put a little elastic in. We shall see soon enough!

I always love your book recommendations Lena (or is it Leena?). I have several of the ones you mentioned on reserve now! Have you ever read any books by Curtiss Sittenfeld? I just finished Romantic Comedy and I loved it. It did take me a little bit to get into it at first, but in my opinion, it was worth it.

Hi Beth!! I have LOVED so many of Curtis S’s books. Romantic Comedy might be the only one I haven’t read!! If you recommend, I will try!! I think I tried the sample and didn’t love it but sounds like it takes a second. So good to know! Now I have that to look forward to 😘

I use the Chaiagoo fixed 9” needle. It’s different then the shorties.

If you to avoid ladders with magic loop try using 2 circular needles. Way easier and no ladders 😊👍🏽❤

I am a super loose continental knitter. I knit with double zeros and have found that 3x1 rib gets me the rubbing I like and most often DK. Good luck?

That is very helpful advice Julie. I will try 3 by 1 in my next sock! I actually love playing with ribbing and seeing the different looks it gives!

I knit the last Stephen West sock a long and they were definitely difficult. Definitely not something to start with.

You are Here. Having a terrible time getting thru this book. Very boring. Amazing how we think.

I’m sorry to hear that Karen! It took me a minute to get into it as well. I hope you settle into it and enjoy it. I loved getting to know the very unglamorous but real characters.
