- Fortune's Alyson Shontell sat down with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss winning the historic election earlier this year to become the 10th Prime Minister of the country.
It was not an easy road for Ibrahim to become Prime Minister of Malaysia. His ascent initially seemed as if it would be swift when he was named deputy prime minister in the early 1990s, supporting his onetime mentor, Mahathir Mohamad. But when that relationship soured, Anwar found himself sacked, beaten, and ultimately imprisoned for nearly a decade on bogus charges of corruption and sodomy. It is a criminal offense to be gay in the Muslim-majority country.
Anwar joined forces again with Mahathir in 2018 following the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal, in which over $4 billion was stolen from the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund, aided by a former Goldman Sachs managing director. Although the investment bank paid a settlement for its involvement, Anwar is still fighting to get the rest of the money back from the Wall Street giant. The scandal had brought down then-Prime Minister Najib Razak, and Mahathir returned to power in hopes of getting Malaysia back on track. But the country went through years of political instability afterward, with multiple leaders being elected and ousted in rapid succession while its economy slumped amid weakening exports and a global slowdown.
In November 2022, the Malaysian king named Anwar as the country’s 10th prime minister after a deadlocked vote in a historic election. Yet soon after, Anwar faced another test: A state election on Aug. 12, involving six of Malaysia’s 13 states, which turned out a mixed early verdict. Although the outcome was generally predicted, the opposition made up ground in some key areas.
Now 76, Anwar has much to do to maintain stability and improve Malaysia’s economic world standing. Much of the plan‘s success hinges on persuading large global companies to bring high-paying jobs to Malaysia, which hopes to position itself as an attractive supply-chain solution. Anwar recently struck an impactful deal with Elon Musk to bring Starlink and Tesla opportunities into the country and hopes more deals will follow. But he will need to also convince these leaders that his government is stable enough to stay in power and see his vision through.

I was in Malaysia recently and realized they don't accept cash as payment at frontline counters of government agencies anymore. You need to pay direct to the government account either via bank card or QR code. That's a step in the right direction to prevent illegal money transfer at the frontlines. Thailand, Indonesian, Vietnam and the Philippines could learn from Malaysia on this!

I'm Asian American and we hear good things about Malaysia. It's a kind, warm and soft multicultural society. Like Anwar and his soft audacity. We've been watching him and I think he's a bright spark in a very dynamic region full of promise but also sometimes quite dangerous, opaque and shady. Malaysians should listen and learn from ANWAR to be patient to rebuild the country. Reformation needs time and it can't achieve without sacrifices along the way. Sometimes, it's easy to say than done in many areas esp handling people and changing their mindsets.

As a Malaysian, I truly admire Anwar as our 10th PM. He has a heavy responsible to shoulder a lot of critics esp from the past PM and the opposition political party who never stop to try and over throw Anwar and his government. I believed that Anwar is firm in administering the present unity government. He is doing a great job and has gain trust to foreign investors to invest and steer our economy to greater heights. As a PM it's time to eradicate all the bad apples and spoilers of this harmonious Malaysia. Malaysia is a country with multiracial ethnics and we have been living peacefully for decades until this particular party and our ex PM who is power crazy started playing racial and religions sentiment to put fear to our nation. Comparing with other PMs from the year 2000 onwards, he is the most intellectual PM Malaysia has ever had, although it is a bit unfortunate for him to lead his country with the greater, yet unprecedented corruption and extremism that have been ongoing at the moment eversince the regime of Mahathir's era. We can also say Najib should've also been a bright person but due to his massive wrongdoings, he quickly became unpopular in terms of leading Malaysia to a greater nation. Anwar Ibrahim is the best example of human leadership especially amongst the Malay nusantara that many poor Bruneians like me really appreciate and he could easily lead my country like how Singapore has become today, if given the chance!

He was famously appointed as the Chairman of both World Bank and IMF whilst being awarded as the Finance minister of the year twice, and that says a lot why he is the most intellectual PM of Malaysia. Mahathir's Vision 2020 was a scam for the malaysians, if you ask me about one of many hundreds of lies he made.

Still can't believe he's my 10th PM and he has overcame so many adversities and setbacks with grace, courage, resilience, patience and wisdom. Indeed, a lot of responsibilities on his shoulders to bring my country forward in many ways while in tenure, and I do agree that we should focus on doing our best with well intentions and do what's right for this country now. It took him 25 years to get here, and I do think he's gonna leave a beautiful legacy behind. You have my support, DSAI.
